“Let’s just remember we’re on a mystery
adventure,” Christina reminded them. “And I don’t
understand what we’re supposed to do next now
that we’re here at the dock.”
Slowly, the kids approached the ship. A man
dressed in authentic costume, as Captain
Christopher Newport might have dressed, stood
high above them on the Susan Constant. With a
finger, he beckoned the kids to come aboard.
The kids looked at one another, then climbed
the gangplank. At the top, a nautical line separated
them from the grim-looking captain. Without a
word, he handed Alex a folded piece of white paper.
In a deep, commanding voice the captain
said, “I think you should read this right away. It was
given to me to deliver to four kids who would appear
here shortly. I’m sure I have no idea what this is
about.” The captain turned, as if he had important
business below and vanished down into the hold of
the ship.
“Well, that was curious, too,” said Christina.
Quickly, the kids scampered back down the
gangplank and stood in the shade of the ship. Alex
looked up at the masts and lines and furled sails and
said a special wish that this clue would be more helpful.
