Surprisingly, all the lights were out. “Are you closed?” Courtney called out. “I think it’s too early for them to be closed,” she said to the others. Suddenly from the dark shadows behind a counter, a deep voice yelled at them. “Yes, we’re closed! But give me that package and I’ll get it out of here today.” A hand reached out and grabbed the package of bones right out of Grant’s hand. “And if you know what’s good for you, you’ll take this clue and see if you can find the real bone thief, kids!” The hand thrust a piece of white paper at them. Christina grabbed it. Now the voice yelled, “I said get OUTTA HERE!” The kids turned and ran for their lives. Back outside, the kids ran as far away from the mail station as they could. Out of breath, they stopped and sat on a wooden bench, breathing hard. “Well, that was curious!” Christina said. “It sure was,” Courtney agreed. “What was that all about?” “I guess we might be able to tell from the note that mean guy gave us?” Grant suggested. 53

Maybe this note is a clue that might help prove his innocence.” Reluctantly, Christina handed over the folded piece of white paper. The others hung over Alex’s shoulders eagerly as he unfolded the paper and read: “MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT… IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE FACTS, GO SEE SUSAN!” “Are you sure this note is meant for us?” Christina asked. “I don’t know a Susan. Maybe the guy at the mail station has us mixed up with someone else.” “I don’t think so,” said Courtney. “News of the missing skeleton is all the buzz behind the scenes here. I imagine whoever that guy is, he saw that the package was from Joe.
