7 a trip to the mail room Alex was absolutely speechless. “Dad,” he finally squeaked out. “You’re no thief!” The other kids wondered if Alex really, really believed that, or if he was actually asking his father to confirm that he had not stolen the valuable skeletal remains. “Of course, I didn’t steal anything!” Joe said angrily. “But someone is sure making it look like I did. And if the police get enough evidence, then they may arrest me.” Now Alex looked like he could cry. This made Joe try to be a little more cheerful. “Hey, kids,” he said. “I didn’t mean to burden you with my problems. It will all turn out all right. “Ok!” the kids said eagerly. They were happy to help and they wanted to get out of there so they could talk about this terrible situation. Grant took the package and shook it a little. It rattled just slightly. “Hey, be careful with that!” Joe warned. “Ok,” Grant promised. “What’s in here?” Without thinking, Joe said, “Bones.” When he saw how the kids looked at him—especially his son, Alex—he just shook his head. “I’m sending them to a lab for tests. Go on and get out of here,” he said. “I have work to do.” The kids headed for the mail station. They walked glumly down the path, now paying little attention to the tourists or the beautiful late afternoon sunshine and shadows. “I’m sure your dad didn’t do anything bad,” Christina said to Alex. “Don’t worry, we’ll help get to the bottom of this.” Courtney and Grant nodded in agreement, but Alex just kicked his feet in the dirt and stared at the ground as they walked. Christina figured he was trying to make sense of this new bad news. “Look,” Christina said, still trying to cheer everyone up. “Papa gave me twenty dollars. Let’s get this mail delivered and I’ll treat everyone to ice cream.” 52
