5 A vip tour Amy began their tour right away by saying, “In the year 1607, the Powhatan Indians were busy with their daily chores, when they were surprised to see three ships come sailing up the James River! The three ships were named the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. They had been sent from England by a group called the Virginia Company. “The Virginia Company was a group of men, who had a royal charter from King James I of England. The men put up the money to send 104 men and boys to try to establish a permanent English colony here. “They had many urgent reasons to do this. First, they wanted to claim land for England before the countries of France, Spain, and Portugal beat them to it. Second, they hoped to find riches here to send back to England. Third, they thought they could find the so-called Northwest Passage that would take them on to the Orient. Finally, some 37

English missionaries were eager to convert the Indians to their religion,” Amy finished. “And they did all that?” Christina asked. Amy laughed. “Not quite! First, they had to try to make friends with the Indians and keep from starving to death!” Just as the kids started to ask more questions, Amy’s walkie-talkie squawked. She pressed the LISTEN button with a worried frown. Quickly, she listened, frowned, and nodded. She pressed the TALK button and said, “I’ll be right there!” She turned to the kids and said, “Sorry, but I’ve got to interrupt our tour for a little while. You kids stay right here and I’ll be back shortly.” She ran off in a great hurry. “Did you hear that guy on the walkie-talkie?” Alex said. “Yeah,” said Grant. “He said it was an EMERGENCY. That more of the STUFF was gone. That they had a LEAD.” “Well, I guess we know what he was talking about, don’t you think?” said Alex. “You mean more skeletons have gone missing?” asked Christina. “Oh, it’s not just skeletal remains that are of priceless value here at Jamestown,” Courtney 38
