doubloons and silver pieces of eight. Mimi wore a real-life “piece of eight” around her neck and had showed them how, back then, people snipped little pie-shaped wedges from the coins to pay for goods they bought. Before they could explore the museum any further, two kids rushed up behind them and surprised them by tapping them on the shoulders. Grant and Christina spun around. “Are you Grant?” asked a red-headed, frecklefaced boy. “I’m Alex!” He and Grant shook hands. “I’ll bet you’re Christina?” a girl with long, blond hair asked. “I am Courtney.” “You don’t look like an Indian,” blurted Grant. “Grant!” Christina cried. “Don’t be so rude!” Courtney laughed. “It’s ok, Christina. Lots of people think that just because you have ancestors who were Native Americans, you will be dark-skinned and have dark hair in braids. As you can see, however, that’s just not true.” “When the colonists first came to Jamestown, they even thought the Indians dyed their skin,” Alex shared. “They thought you could rub the stuff off.” “That’s silly!” said Grant with a giggle. 33
“Yeah, but when things are new to you, you often draw the wrong conclusions,” Courtney reminded them. Christina sighed. “Well, what conclusions do you two draw about all this mysterious skeleton stealing, right here at Jamestown under the archaeologists’ noses, and right in the middle of this special celebration, when I’m sure everyone wants everything to be just perfect?” Alex and Courtney shook their heads. “We don’t know what to make of it. Everyone’s real upset, but they’re trying to keep it all hush-hush, even while they investigate the thefts,” said Courtney. “We’re supposed to stay out of the way,” Alex added. “But we like to solve mysteries!” “You, too?!” cried Grant and Christina together. “Then we should get along fine,” Christina added. “We know your grandmother’s a mystery book writer,” said Courtney. “We’ve read some of her books in school. She should write one about this!” “Hush your mouth!” said Christina with a frown. “Why?” Alex asked. “Because,” said Christina. “If Mimi gets too interested in what’s going on at Jamestown, we’ll never get to go ride rollercoasters and stuff. Our entire vacation will be spent right here.” 34
