4 Jamestown, unsettled It was not a good time for a mystery. It was summer and Jamestown, Virginia was in the middle of its celebration of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in what would later become the new nation of America. Tourists were everywhere! There was lots of celebration going on, but not among the archaeologists who were very angry that some of their most important findings had been stolen from the new Archaearium exhibit. When they got there, Joe had to run off and tend to important business. He left Mimi, Papa, Grant, and Christina with a very pretty and nice young woman in charge of publicity named Amy. “I’ll give you a special tour!” she promised them. But Mimi and Papa didn’t like crowds. They asked if they could just go to the café and enjoy some iced tea for awhile. Amy nodded. She looked 31
at Grant and Christina. “I’m also giving a tour to two VIP kids. Is it ok if we all go together?” The girl seemed very pressed for time. “The boy’s name is Alex; he’s one of the archaeologist’s kids. And the girl’s name is Courtney. She’s part Indian. They’re about your age.” Christina and Grant exchanged glances. “Sure!” they eagerly agreed. They’d much rather go on the VIP tour with a couple of other kids than with their grandparents, who were always asking boring questions with long answers. Amy looked relieved. “Then stay right here,” she said. “I’ll go and get them and be right back!” As Grant and Christina waited, they wandered around the museum and gift shop area. “Four hundred years ago is a long time,” Grant said. “It sure is,” Christina agreed. “Just think, back then there were castles and queens in England.” She pointed to a large portrait of Queen Elizabeth I on the wall. The woman wore an elaborate brocade dress with a butterfly-like collar rising up around her head and fancy hairdo. “And knights and pirates, too!” Grant added.
