Alex and Courtney raised their hands; Christina and Grant did not. Then, amazingly, Clue “rufffff’d” and stuck up one paw. “I guess that breaks the tie,” Alex insisted and began to tear into the package. Sure enough, when he got it open, it contained bones—dog bones! Clue was the only one who was happy. “Now why would anyone mail dog bones through the mail?” asked Christina. “Could this be another red herring?” “It makes no sense at all,” said Courtney. Suddenly, the man who had given Grant the package came storming out of the woods behind them. “Hey, kid!” he screamed. “I thought I told you to mail that package!” He grabbed the box away and the bones clattered to the ground. Clue growled loudly. The man kicked at the dog. “No!” said Grant. “Don’t kick our dog!” “You kids are in big trouble!” the man snarled. Suddenly, Christina grabbed up one of the bones. “No,” she said. “I think YOU are in big trouble, buddy.” The other kids didn’t understand. Then they looked closely at the bone and realized that it was not a dog bone at all, but a different kind of bone. 131

The man grabbed for the bone with one hand and for any kid he could reach with the other. As he tried to fight them, Grant tugged the man’s slouch hat down over his face. While the man could not see, Alex reached down and tied the man’s muddy shoelaces together. The next time he tried to kick Clue, he fell back onto the ground and could not get up. As the kids scrambled to get out of his way, they heard a loud whistle behind them. It was the police! “Stop! Freeze!” the policeman cried. The kids weren’t sure who he meant, so they did indeed stop in their tracks: Alex on the ground on his stomach; Courtney with a rock in her hand; Grant holding the opened mail parcel; and Christina, holding a human bone in her hand! And then, to make things worse, Mimi and Papa made an appearance. Even Clue got down on his belly and whimpered. They were indeed all in BIG TROUBLE! 132
