Grant spun around to see a man in dirty<br />

overalls who wore a slouch hat so far down over his<br />

face that Grant couldn’t see him well. However, he did<br />

notice that the man wore the dirtiest work boots he<br />

had ever seen. Dried mud was caked in all the laces.<br />

When Grant answered, “Sure,” and reached<br />

out for the package, he was shocked to hear Clue<br />

begin to growl. When Grant took the package, Clue<br />

barked and snapped at the muddy laces.<br />

“Whoa, Clue,” said Grant. “It’s ok; those are<br />

just some dirty shoes.”<br />

“Thanks, kid,” the man said and skulked away.<br />

“Sure,” said Grant, but suddenly he did not<br />

feel so sure of himself. Hadn’t they started this<br />

mystery by going to the mail station? It just seemed<br />

too suspicious.<br />

Grant looked hard for the other kids to come<br />

out of the Archaearium, but they did not. Finally, he<br />

got impatient, and besides, Clue was tugging on his<br />

leash. “We’ll just go deliver this package and come<br />

right back,” he said to the puppy. “Our good deed<br />

for the day.”<br />

Quickly, Grant and Clue started down the<br />

path toward the mail station. The faster Clue<br />

pulled, the faster Grant had to walk, then run. As<br />
