Huffing and puffing, they barely squeaked into the Archaearium with the last tour of the day. “No getting locked in this time, ok?” said Grant. “Oh, I don’t know,” whispered Christina. “Frankly, I’d like to have a look around this place by ourselves with no one else around.” Suddenly, one of the archaeologists turned Grant right around. “You can’t bring a dog in here!” he said. “Not unless it’s a seeing eye dog.” “You guys go ahead,” said Grant. He was not turning Clue loose. “We’ll look around out here.” The other kids nodded and went inside. Grant headed back outside and let Clue nose around the building. “Hey, kid,” a man called to Grant. “Would you take this over to the mail station for me?” 123

Grant spun around to see a man in dirty overalls who wore a slouch hat so far down over his face that Grant couldn’t see him well. However, he did notice that the man wore the dirtiest work boots he had ever seen. Dried mud was caked in all the laces. When Grant answered, “Sure,” and reached out for the package, he was shocked to hear Clue begin to growl. When Grant took the package, Clue barked and snapped at the muddy laces. “Whoa, Clue,” said Grant. “It’s ok; those are just some dirty shoes.” “Thanks, kid,” the man said and skulked away. “Sure,” said Grant, but suddenly he did not feel so sure of himself. Hadn’t they started this mystery by going to the mail station? It just seemed too suspicious. Grant looked hard for the other kids to come out of the Archaearium, but they did not. Finally, he got impatient, and besides, Clue was tugging on his leash. “We’ll just go deliver this package and come right back,” he said to the puppy. “Our good deed for the day.” Quickly, Grant and Clue started down the path toward the mail station. The faster Clue pulled, the faster Grant had to walk, then run. As 124
