“You know, I forget,” said Courtney.
Suddenly, Grant inched the puppy near a
man who was smoking a pipe. The dog took a
couple of sniffs. “Track that smell,” Grant bent
low and whispered to the dog.
Christina laughed. “Grant, tobacco plants
don’t smell like the tobacco used in something like
a pipe.”
Grant frowned. “This dog is smart!” he
insisted. “Look! He’s tugging on the leash hard
now. Let’s follow him and see where he takes us.”
And the kids had to, because suddenly, the
puppy tore off, pulling Grant along behind him.
They followed, racing up and down paths, saying,
“Excuse me!” “Sorry!” “Pardon me, please!” as
they almost knocked down tourists, young and old.
Soon, they found themselves on the edge of
the settlement, and sure enough, right in front of
the plot of tobacco plants.
“Told you!” said Grant, although even he was
surprised and wondered if the dog was just lucky.
It was then that Christina’s cell phone rang
in her pocket. Uh, oh, she thought. Was this an
emergency? The other kids stared at her as she
answered and nodded and gravely shook her head,
then said, “Ok, I understand.”
