“Well, maybe he can help us!” said Alex. “Read<br />
this clue and you’ll see what I mean!” He unfolded the<br />
note and the other kids—and the dog—gathered around<br />
as he read aloud:<br />
“YOUR DAD IS FREE, BUT NOT FOR LONG.<br />
HERE’S ANOTHER CLUE FOR YOU:<br />
IF FINDING THE BONES IS WHAT YOU HOPE,<br />
HEAD FOR THE PLACE WHERE WE GROW SMOKE!”<br />
“Grow smoke?” said Grant. “What does that<br />
mean? You can’t grow smoke.”<br />
Courtney snapped her fingers. “Sure you<br />
can,” she said. “One of the first successful<br />
commercial crops the English settlers learned to<br />
grow was tobacco.”<br />
“And you smoke tobacco!” said Christina.<br />
“Not if you’re smart,” said Grant. He<br />
squinched up his nose, just imagining the stinky<br />
smell of a cigarette or cigar.<br />
“Well, they didn’t know 400 years ago that<br />
tobacco was so bad for you,” said Alex. “And they<br />
were desperate to find something to export back<br />
