“I can sure understand that,” said Christina.
“But what about all those clues? Did you guys do
any follow-up while we were gone?”
Courtney shook her head. “We tried, but
everything came up as a dead end.”
“Don’t say dead,” Grant said.
“Grant! What do you have?” squealed
Courtney, as the bloodhound pup bounced out from
behind Grant and began to lick Courtney’s knees.
“Our new puppy!” Grant said excitedly.
“Grant!” said Christina. “You know that’s not
true—we found him,” she told Courtney, “and we
have to wait to see if anyone claims him first. Even
then, that doesn’t mean that Mimi and Papa will let
us keep him.”
Courtney scratched the adorable pup behind
his ears. “He sure is cute,” she said. “What kind of
dog is he?”
“A bloodhound!” said Grant. “The kind of
dog that tracks scents and finds criminals or lost
people or things.”
Courtney flushed. “You don’t think he could
find lost bones, do you?”
Christina frowned. “Maybe if they were
lost,” she said. “But if they were stolen bones, well,
they’re probably long gone from here.”
