A Message from the MES President

Being President of the mikvah in the midst of a pandemic was never on

my bingo card of 2020 – but then again so many things were not on

that card! Right after Purim, when Covid-19 was still new to our vocabulary,

I called MES Vice President Naomi Baum and asked what are we

going to do about this new virus and the mikvah? And thus, began an

ever-changing process for the Mikvah Emunah Society and the Wallerstein

Mikvah. While schools and shuls were forced to close and find

new ways to connect, MES made it its mission to find the safest way

to stay open so that the women of the community could fulfill a sacred

mitzvah.

As so little was known about Covid at the start, we tried to develop best

practices based on science, halacha and common sense. We continued

to change and update our procedures as our understanding of the virus

changed. Not everyone agreed with us, not everyone was happy. My

favorite catch phrase to come from this pandemic is “everyone has their

own shulchan orach” – everyone has their own idea of what the rules

should be during this time. But we had an obligation to protect our staff

and our users to the highest standards of our ability. Thank G-d we have

done just that and truthfully, we’ve heard from many grateful women in

the community who truly appreciate our efforts.

And that is what our evening tonight is about—feeling joy, laughter, hodah’ah

and bracha. Being grateful is a central theme of Judaism, especially on Rosh

Hashanah when we take inventory of all the blessings in our lives. We turn to

HaShem and offer thanks for our abundance, even during the darkest times.

Gratitude is central to affirming all that we have and all that others do for us;

in fact, it is central to a feeling of well-being. When feeling grateful, we are

conscious of the manifold blessings in our lives.

So, I’m grateful that I have this opportunity on behalf of MES to express

our hakarat hatov to so many who have helped on our behalf.

I’ll start with our fabulous Rabbinic advisors Rabbi Dovid Rosenbaum and

Rabbi Brahm Weinberg. With countless emails, late night zoom meetings

and phone calls, Rabbis Rosenbaum and Weinberg have been generous

with their time, thoughts, understanding and advice – halachic or otherwise.

They understand the important work of MES and have championed

our cause. For that and so much more we are grateful for your continued

support and we are blessed to have you in our community.

I can think of no one more dedicated and more caring about the mikvah

than our Mivkah Manager, Chayie Chinn. When Covid hit, she jumped

right in as only Chayie can! She spent time talking to mikvah managers

around the country, helped to produce our protocols, helped the staff

to understand those protocols, helped procure masks and wipes, and

so much more. But most importantly, she spent tireless hours talking to

women in our community to allay their fears and make them understand

that they could use the mikvah safely during a lock-down. When Chayie

took on the important role of mikvah manager, after the untimely passing

of our beloved, Robin Naiman, ‏,ע״ה I know Chayie was worried about filling

Robin’s shoes and I’m sure that running the mikvah during a pandemic

didn’t help! But I think Robin would have been proud of Chayie, as are we,

as Chayie has more than risen to the occasion as she tackles each task with

detail, thoughtfulness and heart! Thank you Chayie!

Naomi Baum is the stalwart backbone of the Mikvah Emunah Society. One

of her many responsibilities is to oversee the smooth running of all things

in the Wallerstein building – a tremendous undertaking – that she does so

well. I am grateful for her calm way, her breadth of knowledge, her spot-on

advise and her commitment to MES.

We extend our hakarat hatov to Ronna Eisenberg, our facilities manager. I’ve

learned more about filtration systems and bromide than one can imagine!

Ronna takes such excellent care of our building and knows the intricate ins

and outs of each of our many, complex systems. She is meticulous about her

work and it shows throughout our building. Thank you Ronna!

Thank you to our medical advisor, who started by answering a few

questions at the beginning and has ended up being a crucial part of our

team. The time and guidance you have given is immeasurable and truly

appreciated.

Thank you to Wendy Guberman – our volunteer webmaster who has been

keeping our website up to date, sometimes hourly as things have evolved.

In the pre-Covid days, the mikvah had greeters at our front desk and

attendants working in the back – all of whom played an important role in

enhancing mikvah experience. Now in this Covid world, we have screeners,

schedulers and attendants. The screeners have spent a tremendous

number of hours patiently talking to the women in the community to

ensure the well-being of the users and the attendants. The schedulers have

worked diligently to find time in our precious limited number of spots per

night so that any woman who needed the mikvah could use it. We extend

our thanks to: Chani Feldman, Shlomit Edinger, Sheila Frankel, Laurie

Cohen, Judy Marwick and Debi Rudmann.

And our attendants, unsung heroes in our community, put themselves on

the front line every night with charm, grace and humility. Their quiet acts of

kindness bring comfort and calm at a time when it’s anything but. We ask

a lot from our attendants and they never fail to deliver. We extend sincere

hakarat hatov to Sarah Dollman, Yocheved Mizel, Chana Wiggins, Chayie

Chinn, Estie Katz, Estee Silver, Sharon Shimoff, Rachel Burnham, Fran

Broder and others who wish to remain anonymous.

In Brachot (58A) Ben Zoma, asks, “How much effort did Adam the first man

exert before he found bread to eat: He plowed, sowed, reaped, sheaved,

threshed, winnowed, separated the grain from the chaff, ground the grain

into flour, sifted, kneaded, and baked, and only thereafter he ate. Yet I,” Ben

Zoma remarked, “I wake up and find all of these prepared for me!” As Ben

Zoma’s statement reminds us, we all depend on many other people’s efforts

to live our daily lives. And others certainly depend on us in turn. But it is

easy in the hustle and bustle of life to lose sight of this fundamental reality.

Gratitude is about increasing our awareness of other people’s contributions

and expressing that awareness in tangible ways. So, on behalf of the

Mikvah Emunah Society I’ll end by expressing our gratitude to you, our

many supporters. We are blessed that you care. Without you, we have no

mikvah and without a mikvah we couldn’t have the wonderful community

we enjoy living in so much.

Thank you and best wishes to all for Shanah Tova U’metukah – A sweet

new year – filled with joy, laughter, hodah’ah and bracha...and no more

Covid-19.

To the wonderful Mikvah staff, volunteers and others,

Every morning when it’s time to start all over again for the day’s

appointments, I pause and think how much awe and admiration

I have for all those who are doing anything and everything needed

to keep the Mikvah open and safe, day in, day out.

To each of you in different ways...

To our attendants: despite the long and late hours, you manage to keep going

with renewed vigor, flexibility, and a consistent can-do attitude. Under those

masks, you maintain cheerful faces and make women feel comfortable and

safe during these unprecedented times.

joy Laughter

Hoda’ah

AND

To our screeners and schedulers: you are the crucial behind-the-scenes part of

this process. The women using the Mikvah are so appreciative of the way you

gently screen them, and how you diligently and calmly explain the procedures

and answer questions. You are the reason the women of our community fully

trust us.

To our medical consultant: we are so grateful for the countless hours you

have given us - always available to answer our questions with compassion

and sensibility.

To the wonderful Rabbonim of our city: how fortunate we are to live in a

Bracha

community blessed with Rabbonim of your stature, who are also wise, kind,

caring, and sensitive.

To the attendants and greeters not working right now: we all miss you so

much and can’t wait for the time when things will be back to normal.

To our web editor: thank you for the endless website edits. I appreciate your

willingness to keep changing things.

To Lori and Naomi: thank you for your constant guidance and assistance.

I know you are there when you’re needed.

And of course, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my husband. I could not do

this without his total cooperation, support and encouragement.

You are all 100% partners in this complex, intense, sometimes challenging,

but hopefully satisfying operation, and in all sincerity I could not do this

without every single one of you.
