Pretty in PinkOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Find out how youcan raise money for the cause with events and fundraisers.This year’s pandemic has taken its tollon us all. Theatres, restaurants andhotels may have been at the forefrontof the media, but like those businesses,charities have also seen a hugedrop in vital funds. The cancellationof sponsored 5k runs, walks andchallenges means charities need oursupport more than ever.October is Breast Cancer Awarenessmonth and offers the opportunity tohelp raise money for research andsupport. Buy and wear your pink ribbonproudly or organise a socially distancedfundraiser at home.On 23 October, charity Breast CancerNow, will be bringing back its ‘Wear itpink’ event. Since its launch in 2002, theevent has raised over £35million.Balwinder, aged 56 from Essex, wasdiagnosed with breast cancer in 2015during a routine work medical review,she said: “When the consultant saidthe dreadful words “you have breastcancer”, I was devastated. I had so manyemotions running through my head,from anger to disbelief to denial.”Balwinder was supported by herhusband and son throughout herchemotherapy, but also reached outto Breast Cancer Now. “Breast CancerNow were a vital lifeline for me,” sheexplained. “When I was diagnosed, I wasbombarded with so much informationand I was struggling to get my headaround what was happening. I was putin touch with Breast Cancer Now andthey helped me understand everythingand guided me through treatment.“I was also put in touch with a ladywho had been diagnosed with breastcancer a few years earlier throughBreast Cancer Now’s Someone Like Meservice. This was wonderful becausewe could chat about the silly stuff andholidays, but if I needed advice abouttreatment, I could ask her too.”Since her recovery Balwinder has takenpart in fundraising events such asbucket collections at her local Asda, afashion show and impressively ran 5kthree weeks after her final treatment.She has helped raise awareness withlocal MPs and this year features in the‘Wear it pink’ campaign.“I feel really proud to support ‘Wear itpink’. Breast Cancer Now has done somuch for me and this is my way of givingback. By taking part, you’ll be makinga difference, helping to fund researchto help save lives and care for peoplelike me, who are living proof of theimportance of the support they provideat a very crucial time,” she said.She also added her words of wisdom:“Ask for help. Don’t be shy, just ask. Ifyou need someone to hold your handor lend an ear to listen to your worries,it helps to keep talking! Be kind toyourself, self-compassion, self-care andput your needs first ‘top priority’. Youknow the old saying ‘many hands makelight work’!”It’s never been more important to raisemoney for breast cancer research andcare.
