Bright

Future for

Bedford

Undeterred by the exceptional challenges of 2020, Bedford is

forging ahead with its plans for the future.

Town Centre Improvements

Works to improve Bedford’s town centre are continuing,

including changes to encourage pedestrians and cyclists and

provide a more pleasant shopping experience. Mayor Dave

Hodgson said: “We are looking to the future to ensure our town

centre continues to thrive in these difficult times.”

Higgins Bedford

The art gallery and museum, located in the 19th century

buildings of Castle Brewery, has reopened. Home to a world

renowned art collection, visitors will once again be able to enjoy

displays telling the story of the local area, alongside nationally

significant collections of art and design.

Shopping

Bedford offers a wealth of choice for shoppers with the modern

Harpur Centre housing national brands alongside independent

stores. Explore the historic arcades and back streets and you’ll

discover even more stores. Samantha Laycock, Harpur Centre

manager, commented: “It has been wonderful to welcome

customers back and I know our town has a bright future ahead.”

Outdoor spaces

Bedford’s beautiful parks and open spaces have provided a

lifeline in recent months. The Embankment is a glorious sight

with over 20,000 flowers planted by the Council, bringing a

swathe of colour along this stretch of the River Great Ouse.

Festivals

New dates have been announced for Bedford’s biggest festivals

which were due to take place this year. The incredibly popular

River Festival will now go ahead on 17 and 18 July 2021 while

the Bedford Kite and Motoring Festival will return to Russell Park

and the Embankment on 12 and 13 June.

A Place to Stay

Following a multi-million pound investment, The Bedford Swan

Hotel now boasts 113 stunning bedrooms, including a palatial

honeymoon suite, an enlarged dining space at the Pen & Cob

brasserie, extended Terrace overlooking the river, a new lounge,

transformed function rooms and Anna’s, a perfect place for

afternoon tea.

New in Town

CarRumBar, which opened its doors in Howard Street in August,

promises the full Caribbean experience of great food and good

vibes while the new family-owned Bridges Espresso Bar serves

breakfast, brunch and lunch with locally roasted coffee and

cocktails in Riverside Square.
