Dear Reader,
It’s time to talk about the buzz word of the moment, no not COVID,
we’ve certainly had enough of that, but ‘staycations’! Who could have
foreseen that we’d all be frantically Googling for cottage rentals, hotel
offers and camping facilities in the UK? Well, 2020 is the year full of
surprises and I am firmly swapping my usual flight searches for a road
trip across England.
Fortunately, living in East Anglia makes it super easy to book a
staycation without the stress of travelling too far. We’re blessed
with wild coastlines, pretty villages dotted with cute cottages and
chic cities. In this issue you’ll find a guide to the best destinations
in the East complete with hotel and restaurant recommendations.
There’s also plenty of ideas for days out too; King’s Lynn,
Framlingham and Hitchin!
I am thrilled to see the return of outdoor events. Though plans may
change, there’s some exciting things to look forward to such as
drive-in cinema experiences, pumpkin patches and exhibitions.
Remember to check in advance if you plan on visiting and to social
distance at all times.
There’s been a few changes at eastlife during lockdown. We have a
new publisher, new team members and a fantastic newly designed
website! I hope you enjoy!
Stay safe

‘The City of Stories’ film launches
campaign to bring residents safely back
into Norwich
Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) and VisitNorwich
have launched a new film, headlining a campaign aimed at
Norfolk residents. The ‘Norwich, the Next Chapter’ campaign
aims to inspire confidence in city users, encouraging them to
safely return back to Norwich. The film focuses on the human
moments we’ve missed, showing people that life is in the city
again, that safety measures are in place and it’s still an exciting
place to visit.
Taking cues from the city’s brand: ‘Norwich, The City of Stories’,
‘Norwich, The Next Chapter’ is a hopeful and positive campaign.
An invitation to come back to Norwich and support local
businesses.
The campaign launches with a one-minute film featuring on
visitnorwich.co.uk, social media and YouTube. The film is
uplifting and emotive, with the city’s residents and businesses
as the star. Importantly, it acknowledges the changes we are all
making coming out of lockdown, but tells the story of the little,
everyday moments that make life in the city special.

You can’t beat the feeling of autumn; a
chill to the air and a chance to get cosy.
It’s a time for long walks and tucking into
hearty comfort food. Make the most of
what our beautiful region has to offer
with our autumn experience bucket list.
1 Leaf Peeping
Autumn is a time for Mother Nature
to show off. Discover a display of
striking orange, golden yellow and
vibrant red foliage with a walk around
the East Anglian countryside. Enjoy
a colourful walk and crunchy leaves
at locations such as Blickling Estate,
Anglesey Abbey, Sutton Hoo, Fairhaven
Woodland and Water Gardens and
Christchurch Park.
2 Sunsets
Evening skies come alive during
autumn with dazzling pinks, red and
orange. With the change of the clock,
sunset is easier to catch. Wrap up
warm, grab a hot drink and head to the
coast for the best view of the sunset.
Hunstanton and Holme-next-the-Sea are
prime locations.
3 Conkers
What child doesn’t love collecting
conkers? Relive childhood memories
with the family and hunt for shiny brown
conkers. There’s something exciting
about cracking open the spikey green
case to reveal its size. Add string and
host your own conker championship –
hours of guaranteed fun! The region’s
parks are your best bet for finding them.
4 Bird Watching
The East of England is blessed with a
wealth of bird species. In fact, Norfolk
is one of the UK’s most sought after
destinations for twitchers. During
autumn many birds form flocks. Head to
the North Norfolk Coast to catch sight of
the pink-footed geese or visit The Wash
at Snettisham to see waders. Swans
start to arrive at Welney around late
October for the winter; stop by one of
the scheduled swan feeds.
5 Blackberry Picking
Those juicy blackberries are far too
tempting to resist. Take a pot on your
country walk and fill it with the autumn
fruit. They’re great for adding to pies and
smoothies!
6 Empty Beaches
What could be better than a beach to
yourself? Norfolk and Suffolk’s wild
beaches are often deserted during
autumn and winter, apart from the
odd dog walker. Wrap up, take a cosy
blanket, picnic and flask of tea and settle
down to admire the gorgeous seascape.
The sand dunes at Wells, Holkham,
Brancaster and Dunwich make a good
shield from the wind.
7 Wildlife Tours
There’s an abundance of wildlife during
autumn. Woodland animals begin to
stow away food for winter, otters make
an appearance, pheasants flap around in
the undergrowth and deer are frequently
seen. At this time of year stags develop
antlers to fight rivals to attract a mate.
You’ll be able to see deer at Minsmere,
Thetford and Holkham, which also offers
deer and wildlife safaris during October.

LIFESTYLE
8 Coffee Shops
It might seem simple, but a cute
independent coffee shop is even more
special when it’s dark, rainy and cold
outside. Snuggle down in a cosy corner
with a book, coffee and cake and
watch the world go by. Eastlife’s top
picks include Fitzbillies in Cambridge,
Applaud Coffee in Ipswich, Hertford
Coffee Lab and Norwich’s Bicycle Shop
Café.
9 Heritage Sites
Stop by a stately home, castle or
medieval woodland for a glimpse into
East Anglia’s history. The surrounding
grounds will be filled with colour. Opt for
a guided tour or take a leisurely stroll.
10 Pumpkin Patch
Nothing quite says autumn like a
pumpkin patch. In recent years, farms
have gone all out with their pumpkin
displays. Warning, it will be muddy, so
pull on your wellies and head out to
pick your own pumpkins from the vine.
There’s usually additional entertainment
such as seasonal food, Halloween
displays, fairground rides and even
occasionally a corn maze! Visit
www.eastlife.co.uk for our pumpkin
patch guide.
11 Halloween
Join in the ghoulish fun at some of
the East’s most famous attractions.
Zoos, theme parks, farms and stately
homes host a number of Halloween
events for children. From spooky walks
and ghostly railway rides to crafts and
pumpkin carving, there’s plenty of
things to do during October half term.
If you’re feeling extra brave, visit one
of the region’s scare attractions such
as PrimEVIL, Scaresville or The Cursed
which run throughout October.
12 Ghost Tours
East Anglia is home to some of the most
haunted locations in the UK. Cambridge,
Norwich, St Albans, Ely and Ipswich
all offer ghost tours where you’ll walk
cobbled streets with a guide and get to
grips with harrowing tales of death and
murder. Anne Boleyn is Blickling Hall’s
resident ghost, while Oliver Cromwell
reportedly appears in Ely. If you’re
feeling brave check-in for a night at a
supposedly haunted hotel.
13 Bonfire Night
The smell of gunpowder in the air on a
crisp cold night is like the official scent
of autumn. Firework displays take place
across the region, some with huge
bonfires and additional entertainment.
Get ready to “ooooo” and “ahhh” as the
skies light up!
14 Cosy Pubs
Nothing beats a cosy pub with a
crackling fire after a long country walk.
Dotted in villages, countryside and on
the coast are comfy boltholes waiting to
be discovered. Plan your walking route
to tie in with a nice pub lunch and glass
of red in front of the fire – bliss!
15 Seafood
It’s no secret the East Anglian coast
serves up delicious seafood, but during
autumn and winter, shellfish comes into
season. October is great for a steaming
bowl of mussels; some of the best can
be found at Wells-next-the-Sea. Crab,
clams and scallops are also at their
finest during autumn. Don’t forget to try
the oysters at Brancaster, Mersea Island
or Orford.
16 Farmers’ Markets
Make the most of harvest season with
a trip to a farmers’ market or farm shop.
Most towns host a monthly farmer
market, while farm shops are stacked
with apples, pumpkins and squashes.
Try samples and browse the foodie
delights. It’s a great time to pick up fresh
produce for your seasonal homemade
pies and stews!
17 Apple Days
Apples come into season around the
end of September and to celebrate,
selected stately homes, markets and
farms offer a day dedicated to all
things apple. Learn about the different
varieties, try apple bobbing, have a go at
pressing and sip on local cider while you
explore. Check the National Trust and
English Heritage websites for events, or
stop by Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse
on 11 October.
18 City Breaks
Though it may be tempting to head to
the countryside for autumn, the region’s
cities are a nice alternative. You’ll get the
chance to see autumnal colours in the
parks, dine in style at chic restaurants,
try local tipples in traditional pubs and
explore the streets and attractions
before the Christmas crowds descend.
19 Movie Night
On a dark, cold evening or grey, wet day,
snuggle down with a bowl of popcorn,
hot chocolate and watch a film. Autumn
is a time for feeling warm and cosy
so break out the movie classics. This
year, outdoor cinema experiences are
extending into September and October,
check our website for more details.
20 Punting
Take in the autumn colours of
Cambridge with a punting experience
along the River Cam. Most reputable
punting companies offer blankets
to keep you warm and a selection of
different packages.

Shared Ownership
– all you need
to know!
Shared Ownership
gives first time
buyers and
those that do
not currently
own a home the
opportunity to
purchase a share
in a new build or
resales property.
The purchaser pays a
mortgage on the share
they own, and pays rent
to a housing association
on the remaining share.
Because the purchaser
only needs a mortgage
for the share they are
purchasing, the amount
of money required for
a deposit is usually a lot
lower when compared to
the amount that would be
required when purchasing
outright.
The purchaser has the
option to increase their
share during their time in
the property via a process
known as ‘staircasing’, and
in most cases can staircase
all the way to 100%. In this
instance, the shared owner
will no longer pay any rent,
just their mortgage along
with any service charges
and ground rent.
• Shared Ownership
allows you to get on the
property ladder as an
owner-occupier, offering
long-term stability
without overstretching
yourself.
• Deposits are generally
lower than buying on the
open market.
• Shared Ownership
makes mortgages more
accessible, even if you’re
on a lower wage.
• Your monthly repayments
can often work out
cheaper than if you had
an outright mortgage.
The monthly payments
are also generally lower
26
than if you were to rent
privately.
• You have the option
to buy more shares of
your home in the future
via a process known
as ‘staircasing’. In most
cases, purchasers can
staircase all the way to
100%, in which case they
are no longer required
to pay any rent, just their
mortgage along with any
relevant service charges
and ground rent.
• You can sell the shares
you own at any time.
• It is not normally
necessary to pay Stamp
Duty land tax on an initial
purchase.
• Unlike private renting,
you have security of
tenure. As long as the
rent is paid and mortgage
repayments are made,
you can live in the
property for the duration
of your lease – this is
usually 99 or 125 years. At
the end of the lease, the
leaseholder can organise
an extension with their
housing provider; we
would recommend
appointing a solicitor and
surveyor with experience
in this area.

Plan Your
Staycation
Holidays may be looking a little different this year,
but thankfully East Anglia has plenty to offer if you’re
thinking of booking a mini break.
29
After months of lockdown, we’re all eager to get out and explore and where better
to embrace the staycation trend than beautiful East Anglia? Wild beaches, stunning
countryside and chic cities, we’ve selected our favourite destinations complete with
accommodation and dining recommendations.
Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
If you’re looking to escape the crowds on the North Norfolk Coast set up base at Cleynext-the-Sea.
Generally quiet, even during peak times, the sleepy coastal village is lined
with flint cottages. The Cley windmill, which offers accommodation and a restaurant,
stands proud on the marshes. Pick up local produce at the Cley Smokehouse or
Picnic Fayre. It’s a great location for long country and coastal walks, where you could
potentially not see a soul for miles!
Eat: Dun Cow, Salthouse
Stay: Cottage rental via the Blakeney Cottage Company
Holme-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
Neighbouring Brancaster and Hunstanton often steal the limelight of this tiny village
on the North Norfolk Coast. There’s beach for days; run wild and care-free for miles
and miles. In the distance you’ll see the colourful cliffs and lighthouse of Hunstanton.
It’s great for dog-owners as there’s no restrictions and plenty of long walks along
Holme Dunes and the Norfolk Coast Path. There are very few facilities, perfect for social
distancing. Pack a picnic and watch the sunset!
Eat: Old Town Beach Café, Old Hunstanton
Stay: Lavender Barn, available to rent via oceanbreaks.com
Beccles, Suffolk
After months of
lockdown, we’re all
eager to get out and
explore and where
better to embrace the
staycation trend than
beautiful East Anglia
Beccles and neighbouring Bungay, are two gorgeous Georgian towns, nestled in the
Waveney Valley. Suffolk’s coastal towns are the obvious choice for a staycation, but
Beccles offers an enjoyable weekend away. Rent a boat and navigate the southern
Broads, follow the Beccles Marsh Trail along the river, find a hidden treasure in the
antique stores or learn about the local history with the Bungay Town Trail. You can also
sample local tipples at Flint Vineyard and St Peter’s Brewery in Bungay.
Eat: Graze at The White Horse, Beccles
Stay: Waveney House Hotel, Beccles
30
Lavenham, Suffolk
The timber clad buildings, cobbled streets and colourful cottages of Lavenham and
Long Melford will make you feel as though you have been transported back in time.
There’s a photo opportunity around every corner! Spend a slow morning drinking and
eating in one of the many tearooms, shop in the boutiques and art galleries, and wander
around the local countryside. Stop by Kentwell Hall; a Tudor mansion with pretty
gardens and walking routes. There are often seasonal events which bring history to life.
Eat: The Great House Hotel & Restaurant
Stay: The Swan at Lavenham
West Mersea, Essex
There’s no loud amusements or buckets and spades, instead expect rustic shores with
pretty pastel beach huts and seafood shacks. Embrace your active side with paddle
boarding, kayaking and sailing. The jetty is the perfect location for enjoying a spot of
crabbing. Tuck into fresh fish and chips, seafood platters or oysters – a local delicacy.
As the sun sets, take a boat trip or nab an outdoor seat at one of the restaurants and sip
Champagne. West Mersea is also home to a vineyard if want to try local wine. Nearby
Colchester offers excellent shopping opportunities and Constable Country is only 30
minutes away too!
Eat: West Mersea Oyster Bar
Stay: The Victory at Mersea
Spend a slow morning
drinking and eating
in one of the many
tearooms, shop in
the boutiques and art
galleries and wander
around the local
countryside
Saffron Walden, Essex
If you’re looking for a country escape but still want amenities on your doorstep,
then book a weekend break in Saffron Walden. The small market town has plenty of
tearooms and restaurants. Shop at the market, boutique or antique stores. Explore the
17th century Audley End House and Gardens, Bridge End Gardens and Audley End
Park. If you have little ones in tow, hop aboard the Audley End Miniature Railway or visit
nearby Stansted Mountfitchet Castle. Saffron Walden is surrounded by pretty villages
with lovely country walks and cosy pubs.
Eat: The Coach & Horses Pub, Newport
Stay: The Cross Keys Hotel & Restaurant
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Cambridge is a popular city to visit at any time of year, but during autumn the cobbled
streets, colleges, parks and riverbanks are great for wandering. Admire the changing
trees through the parks, cycle along the riverbanks and country trails, hire a punt or
book a college tour. Back street pubs and cosy coffee shops offer the perfect escape
from the cold. Enjoy an evening at a cocktail bar or dine with views of the city, while
tucking into local hearty produce.
Eat: The Pint Shop
Stay: University Arms Hotel

It’s been a while since I recalled Fletcher’s
tales of mischief. Lockdown for us was tough.
Not only because Fletcher was restricted
to one walk a day but for personal reasons,
which were made a hundred times worse
when lockdown boredom got the better of
Fletcher and he munched on some stones in
the garden.
It broke my heart to hand him to the vet in the
car park, petrified that I might never see him
again. However, surgery went well. A stone
was removed from his intestine. Recovery was
tough as he refused to eat at the vets, but back
home he couldn’t resist the chicken trail I left
around the house to tempt him to eat. If you’re
a regularly reader, you’ll remember last year
that Fletcher ate a kebab stick. Two surgeries
in 10 months – I’m a terrible mother! I’m sure
Tesco Pet Insurance are going to be thrilled
with us. I’m not looking forward to the renewal
fee!
Thankfully, Fletcher bounced back quickly and
he was soon up to his usual tricks. Once he
was fully healed, we treated him to a morning
of kayaking at Grantchester. It wasn’t the
peaceful experience I had in mind, as Fletcher
insisted on jumping on and off and swimming
the length of the river. No one else was soaking
wet in their kayak, just us – thanks Fletch!
Tails About
Town:
“Hello, my name is Fletcher, and
I’m a swimming addict!”
It’s no secret Fletcher loves to swim, but his
obsession is creating some awful behaviour.
He screams; a high pitch shrill while in the
car when we approach a familiar place with
water. At Mersea Island, he ran a mile down the
beach so he could get to the incoming tide.
My husband and I ran after him while frantically
apologising to people for the carnage he was
causing to their beach set ups.
He will no longer sit quietly near water either.
No matter how long he has spent swimming,
he will squeal and screech until I let him swim
again. It’s embarrassing and annoying to
everyone around. He spent two solid hours
swimming at Mersea, which involved my
husband and I taking shifts to watch him. At
one point when we tried to leave, Fletcher
protested and plonked himself down in the
sea. He just sat; waves bobbing around his
head. His little black face looked like a seal
popping up from the water.
This isn’t normal doggy behaviour. Swimming
has become an addiction. It’s stopping me
taking him out for day trips to the beach
because the noise is unbearable. Fletcher
needs professional help – I can’t believe I have
just written that sentence, but it’s true! I need a
dog behaviourist to fix the problem. If you have
any recommendations, please get in touch at

Walkies!
We’ve listed our favourite
dog walking routes worth
exploring this autumn
36
Make the most of the colourful trees and crunchy leaves with a
walk around the East Anglian countryside complete with a cosy
pub pitstop.
Woodbridge, Suffolk
This is one of the most dog-friendly towns in the East. Most
cafes, pubs and stores are happy to welcome pooches; the
King’s Head even has a ‘mutts menu’ and doggy wall of fame!
Take a walk along the River Deben and Martlesham Creek
before stopping off for coffee and cake at one of the many
cafes. A short 10-minute drive away is Rendlesham Forest,
famous for its UFO trail and beautiful walks. Nearby, start a
circular walk at The Ramsholt Arms pub. The one-hour walk
from the pub leads through fields and country paths. Starting
and ending at The Ramsholt Arms, it’s a great walk to finish with
a pub lunch.
Audley End Park, Essex
Located in the pretty town of Saffron Walden, Audley End Park
is an extension of the grounds of English Heritage’s Audley
End House. The park is free to enter and runs alongside a
golf course. During autumn the park offers a stunning display
of colourful trees and corn fields. Enter via the Abbey Lane
entrance; here there is limited free parking, alternatively you can
park at the nearby Swan Meadows Car Park. There are varying
lengths of circular walks. Once you’ve worked up an appetite
head into town for a bite to eat at one of the many pubs or tea
rooms. The Eight Bells, Tea Amo and Kim’s Tea Room are all
dog-friendly.
Wells to Holkham, Norfolk
Starting at Wells-next-the-Sea, enjoy an autumnal coastal walk.
If you carry on past the iconic beach huts, eventually you will
reach the sands of Holkham. Visit the beautiful Holkham Estate
or simply return along the Norfolk Coastal Path and through
the pine forest back to Wells. Warm up at Wells Beach Café
which provides water bowls and a tap for washing sandy paws.
Alternatively head to the Quayside and tuck into fresh seafood
or fish and chips!
Grantchester, Cambridgeshire
A firm favourite with dog walkers year-round, this tiny village
offers a beautiful country path along the river – perfect for dogs
who love to swim! Wander around the pretty village where
the ITV drama is filmed, before heading down to the river and
walking along the footpath. Take in beautiful scenery and the
free roaming cows. The river gets muddy so make sure you
have appropriate footwear. The Red Lion is a great option for
lunch – remember to make a reservation as it can get busy!
Letty Green, Hertfordshire
Park at The Cole Green Way and explore the rail trail that runs
from Hertford to the edge of Welwyn Garden City. The old
railway line, with streams and plenty of shade, is popular with
dog walkers and is a great way of working up an appetite before
your trip to the local Cowper Arms pub. The pub offers a biscuit
bar for dogs and a good choice of food for humans too!
TOP TIP! Remember during autumn you’re more likely
to see pheasants and deer, so dogs who like to chase
are best kept on a lead!

How to take great photographs of your dog
Every dog owner loves to share photos
of their pet. But how do you get the
perfect picture? How do you master
an action shot? Nigel Wallace, a local
professional dog photographer,
has shared his top tips to taking
photographs of your dog like a pro.
With pretty autumn country landscapes
and beautiful sunsets, now is the time
to perfect your photography skills. Just
imagine how gorgeous your pooch will
look galloping through golden leaves or
posing with pumpkins!
Nigel Wallace is a professional
dog photographer based in
Suffolk, specialising in ‘on location’
photography. He knows a thing or two
about capturing characters, creating
memories and working with natural light
in beautiful East Anglian surroundings.
Here are his top tips for great outdoor
dog photography:
Nigel Wallace works on location to
create fun and exciting photoshoots
for you and your dog. A set price and
bespoke photoshoot packages are
available to suit individual requirements.
This includes pre-shoot consultation call
to discuss what you would like from the
shoot, possible locations, and to learn
about your dog. For information visit
www.nigelwallacephotography.co.uk
or call 07720 834868.
Get down low
Get to eye level with your dog to really
connect with them in your photos. I
often lay down on the ground to capture
an image.
Focus on the dog’s eyes
It’s important to ensure the eyes are in
focus as this is generally the first thing
people look at when viewing photos.
Avoid blurry photos
Ensure you use a high shutter speed
setting on your camera. This will help
freeze your subject. For example, I use
1/1000th of a second (or faster) shutter
speed for moving dogs.
Consider the background
For formal portraits, use a background
free of unnecessary distractions, such as
branches and twigs, which can take the
impact away from the subject.
Consider the light
Using the available natural light can
really show your dog at its best. Black
dogs tend to photograph the best when
facing the sun as this brings out the
details in the face and eyes. Flash can
be used carefully, if needed, if you feel
that your dog would not be frightened
by this.
Use natural props
Look for additional elements to add
interest to the photograph. For example,
a fallen tree covered in green moss can
make a good posing stand.
Dogs in action
Use your camera to record a series
of photographs. Using a continuous
autofocus tracking setting will help
keep your dog in focus whilst capturing
action shots.
Using rewards
When trying to get the dog’s attention,
have either a good supply of your dog’s
favourite treats or a squeaky toy to
encourage them to look at you.
Be patient
Your dog will not understand what
all the fuss is about but will be a great
model if you take your time and give
positive reinforcement when setting up
your shots.
Have fun
Above all else, just enjoy being out with
your dog as much as they enjoy being
with you. The shot of the day is often the
one you least expect to capture.
A relaxed dog is a happy dog!

The disruption that the Coronavirus pandemic brought to schools and their students
was undeniable. Following school closures, we all had to act fast to ensure that we
could provide a seamless transition to home schooling for the benefit of our students.
The period of lockdown has given schools a great opportunity to adapt and use a
number of new technologies to ensure that everyone is connected and welcomed.
Through the use of collaborative technology tools, like Microsoft Teams, we have been
able to host pre-recorded and live lessons, with both students and parents, undertake
group work and 1-2-1 sessions. Even the most informal functionalities, like the chat
space, have their uses and can be used to mimic the day to day interactions that before
would have happened in the classroom.
For some students either joining a new school or going back to school this September,
they can expect a large part of their induction to take place virtually. As always, it is
our job, as teachers and mentors, to continue to make sure that students feel like they
belong to a community; reminding them that they have support and are cared for
and we will be ensuring that their needs are appropriately met. Our student cohort at
Impington International College is from nearly 20 countries, so unfortunately not all of
them will be able to physically join or re-join us, in person, from next month.
The period of lockdown
has given schools a
great opportunity to
adapt and use a number
of new technologies to
ensure that everyone is
connected and welcomed
But the use of technology to virtually induct should not have negative connotations for
students and parents. Technology gives students the opportunity to start the academic
year with confidence; they can undertake course and staff introductions, meet their
class mates in virtual “coffee rooms” and book in personal slots with experienced
members of staff to run through any queries that they have about the back to school
transition.

Mum’s the
Word;
Autumn’s
Promise
Written by Dolly Osborne
2020 was a year that came with such promise. A new decade,
perhaps the second roaring 20s, the 32nd Olympiad, the 75th
anniversary of V-E Day and, though only relevant to me and
my loved ones, my 40th birthday. Like many people up and
down the country I had planned a smorgasbord of events for
2020; comedy, theatre, music, festivals – a packed timetable
to celebrate my hitting the big 4-0. Now I don’t need to tell any
of you that didn’t happen. Instead as COVID-19 hit our shores
the country had to enter into a kind of reverse hibernation.
Households everywhere made like Moominpappa and stocked
up their fridges, larders and (apparently) toilet paper cupboards,
as we planned to bunk down for spring and summer.
Rather than seeing our children frolic amongst the bluebells
and blossom trees we saw them battling with unreliable maths
websites (if you know, you know), reams of home learning
and having to interact with their friends via Zoom or gaming
platforms. The planned street parties were replaced with
neighbourhoods cheering for NHS workers, and the weekly
shop became a military mission.
But now, finally, we are approaching autumn and hopefully a
return to the great outdoors. The season of mists and mellow
fruitfulness bringing so much more to the average British
household. We have two seasons worth of fun to catch up
on, of woodlands to explore, of family trips out and of autumn
holidays.
Whilst I’m sure life won’t be quite like it was before the
pandemic, we will find a new normal, a normal that I suspect
will involve more exploration of our green and pleasant land.
Happily, I know that our beautiful country is more than up to the
challenge. Perhaps the spring picnics that were missed can be
replaced with pumpkin picking with the family. An abandoned
beach holiday can be replaced with a trip to one of Britain’s
many forests or other areas of natural beauty. And as we venture
out into a post COVID world it will be not only with a new-found
love of the world around us, but perhaps even a whole new
perspective on what is truly important in life. Now that’s an
autumn I’m looking forward to.

Foodie:
Eating
out after
lockdown
Written by Gerla de Boer
www.gerladeboer.com
www.cambridgefoodtour.com
On 26 March, the UK went into lockdown, which had a
devastating effect on many businesses, but there were
successes too. Some business owners decided to change
their business model, and almost overnight, it became a huge
success. Independents started home deliveries, chefs prepped
date night meals, working at home, cycling and al fresco dining
has become the new thing, but nobody knows what the future
will hold.
Positive things are happening as new businesses open their
doors. I am over the moon as I thought I only could share with
you the sad losses on the Cambridge food scene. During
lockdown Mark Poynton, previously Restaurant Alimentum,
and Gemma Whiting, the Linton Kitchen, opened doors to new
ventures.
Mark took over the Ancient Shepherd’s in Fen Ditton, and
Gemma opened Barbarella Cafe in Easter Chesterton, which
is a shared pop-up cafe with the Botanica Alchemist. After the
revamp, The Ancient Shepherd will open from 20 August for
sit down meals. Barbarella Cafe will operate as a deli and cafe
once the storm of the pandemic has calmed down.
A lot is happening on the plant side eateries of Cambridge.
The street food inspired VetoMeato launched their pop-up
restaurant at Tabouche in July, which serves global classics
with far flung flavours that will excite and satisfy.
Thrive has been busy converting the well-know CB1cafe in
Norfolk Street since last year. This beautiful and friendly place
opened in June and aims to connect over plant-based meals,
cakes, coffee and drinks.
Stem and Glory have been busy bees, they’re not only moving
from King Street to a new location, behind We Work in Station
Road, but launching a range of ready meals, recipe kits and
branded products such as drinks and cheese.
Malloy’s Craft Butchery opened last year in August. It soon
became one of the places to buy premium quality meat and
Waygu. The lockdown period has seen its sales soar, and owner
Micky has cooked up some exciting ideas. At the time of writing,
he is hosting his first tasting menu at the Green Dragon Pub in
East Chesterton with head chef Gavin Firth taking care of the
delicious food. On 20 August he will start his residency here on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening.
Before lockdown, Andrew from Dulcedo announced that he
would be moving to Edington. Andrew is the master pâtissier in
Cambridge and one of the favourite stops on my food walking
tours. He is also opening a bakery at 190 Mill Road! The name is
a bit of a giveaway, Eclipse Bakery, is going to be a bit less floaty
as Dulcedo, edgy even. They are hoping to open in September.
On offer will be delicious homemade bread, enriched pastries, a
selection of dessert and deli products from local suppliers.
During the lockdown, I was fortunate to trial some excellent
new products. Prepped food sent me restaurant-inspired meals
and Oreno classic Japanese Kushiyaki. Moz from Oreno took
his inspiration from his travels in Japan and a lifelong love of
cooking. He will be adding more products to his range and will
be out and about in his van serving Cambridge.
Prepped Food Company is the brainchild of Simon and Steve,
who hatched the idea during their travels to Asia. Always on
the run and no time to cook, they decided it was time to create
excellent meals for the London commuters. They launched the
company in January 2020 operating from Audley End Station.
Not long after, they had to adapt their business module due
to COVID-19. The focus shifted to the consumer market, and
their place at Audley End station is temporarily closed. Their
tasty food is prepared by Emma, who has worked for some big
names such as Angela Hartnett and Gordon Ramsey.
Let’s finish with dessert! Our king of the gelato has opened his
second shop. You can find Jack Gelato in All Saints Passage
now too. A new kid on the block is Saintly Foods and is another
plant-based enterprise. They offer a range of delicious deepfrozen
desserts, inspired by the best of British puds containing
no additives, preservatives, soy or palm oil, and using natural
ingredients.
Stay safe and support the independents. They need you now
more than ever!

Written by Zena Leech-Calton
www.lovenorfolkfood.co.uk
As I write this ahead of Eastlife’s next edition, it’s hard to know
what to write about. I’m in the middle of lockdown and there
is only change to come of which we are all uncertain. It’s a
different world and food is in a different place – mainly on my
doorstep as a delivery at the moment.
I’ve been super impressed by how during this pandemic food
businesses have managed to carry on regardless, offering
treats, fine dining hampers, afternoon tea, booze boxes and
more. I’m super proud of Norfolk producers and caterers in
keeping us all fed while staying afloat.
So impressed in fact, that my fellow Norfolk food bloggers and
I will be organising some sort of ‘Norfolk Street Food Awards’ to
celebrate all the amazing food vendors that have knocked and
delivered food all over Norfolk during lockdown.
I’ve been part of The Clear Company for a few years now.
They’ve managed to organise a travelling street food fayre
offering tasty trailer food in certain towns and villages across
Norfolk. We’ve had the appearance of crumpet producers,
Kombucha bottles, bao bun kits and cocktail shaking kits –
inventiveness with food has certainly kept me going.
So, here’s to celebrating and visiting all the amazing restaurants,
cafes and pubs that so need our custom and make Christmas
the tastiest and booziest ever – we can always diet in January!
We have so much fine produce on our doorsteps and so
many amazing suppliers delivering the goods. Plus, you can’t
avoid Norwich Market. You’ll find half of the 200 stalls as food
suppliers offering everything from empanadas to Binham Blue.
And if all fails, there is a stall selling rather large knickers!
Cheers to that climb to the food fest that is Christmas. Don’t
forget to book your Christmas parties early and support local
as much as you can. Visit the Eastlife website for party venue
recommendations.

Autumn
wines to fall
in love with
Written by Matt Dicks
Twitter @vinopatrol
As a former pupil at the village primary school, I have vivid
memories of school assemblies. I used to sit at the back, out of
sight from the teachers so I could chat to my fellow classmates.
We used to sing hymns from a small paperback book consisting
of missing pages, ripped pages or a cover and no pages. One
of those hymns was called ‘Autumn Days’. Remember it? I won’t
attempt to attach a voice recording to this article of me singing
it because cracks in windows can cause an unwanted draught
during this time of year. ‘Silk inside a chestnut shell’, ‘the grass
is jewelled’ and ‘scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling’
were just some of the delightful lyrics used to describe the year’s
most colourful season.
However, it’s not all about verses of hymns, as autumn is all
about action in the world of wine. In the northern hemisphere,
it’s harvest season. Grapes are being plucked from the vines in
the vineyard by dozens of skilled workers, ready to be taken to
the winery, where the magic of fermentation takes place.
Having previously spent a year with a producer in
Gloucestershire, harvest time was certainly the highlight. A
constant stream of grapes arriving, ready to be de-stalked,
crushed and pressed. An all action week followed by misty
weekends wearing that favourite cosy jumper whilst walking
leafy lanes, was the perfect combination.
A colourful season requires some colourful wines, so here’s a
selection to ‘fall’ in love with:

FOOD & DRINK
Rustenberg John X
Merriman
A brilliant Bordeaux blend showing
red berry fruits, chocolate notes and a
certain, spicy earthiness. John Xavier
Merriman, the last prime minister of
the Cape Colony before the formation
of South Africa, bought land in 1892
that became the beautiful Rustenberg
Estate. Try this rich, ripe, elegant red with
roast meats.
Torres Altos Ibéricos
Rioja Crianza
This wine is the first fruit of a venture in
the Rioja region by the famous Torres
winery of Catalonia. As you’d expect, it’s
delicious, with ripe berry flavours and
aromas. A 100% Tempranillo that’s the
very essence of Spain, immersing your
palate in velvety smooth red fruits. Try
it with tapas, roast duck or a sweet redpepper
casserole.
Terre di Faiano Organic
Rosso IGP Puglia 2.25L
Ruby-red in colour, with aromas of rich
dark fruit, a silky texture and big bright
spicy flavours of cherries, vanilla and
chocolate. There is so much to enjoy
about this Primitivo – and we’d suggest
serving it with rich meat dishes.
Cave de Turckheim
Crémant d’Alsace
With its crisp, fresh apple notes and
creamy, smooth finish, this crémant
works as well as an apéritif as it does
with buffet food and puddings.
Kaapzicht Bush Vine
Chenin Blanc
This is from a collaboration between our
buyer and Kaapzicht, a family-owned
estate in Stellenbosch that is committed
to its environment and workers,
providing a crèche and a literacy
programme among other schemes. It
has deliciously rich apple and pineapple
flavours on the palate, which build to a
bright, dry finish.
Waitrose & Partners
No.1 Crusted Port
Produced for us by the renowned
Symington Family Estate, this is a
fine crusted port, a style with many
characteristics of a vintage port but
ready for drinking sooner. Crusted
port gets its name from the sediment
that forms as it ages in the bottle; like
vintage port it needs decanting. With
blackberry and cassis flavours, and
chocolate notes.

The easing
of lockdown
and the
opportunity
to appraise
COVID-19 has made a difference to most people’s lives and
returning to the ‘new normal’ may be difficult for some as we try
to adjust to life after lockdown.
Whilst we adapt, considering our psychological wellbeing
should be paramount. This is a great life opportunity to appraise
and make positive adjustments to our lifestyles.
You might want to consider doing some of the following:
• Reassessing and improving relationships
• Easing anxiety
• Dealing with depression
• Building confidence and self esteem
• Reducing irritation and anger
• Tackling stress
• Striving to better yourself through self-development
Wherever you are and whatever your emotional issues you can
access help.
Emotionalskills are offering online therapy nationwide using
Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp and FaceTime to help those who are
struggling with low mood, worry, anger, irritability, low esteem
and relationship issues.
Talking to a professional listener, a therapist and receiving
counselling or coaching can really help people feel reassured
and less despondent, less uncertain, less stressed and anxious
and move towards a better place psychologically.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Find out how you
can raise money for the cause with events and fundraisers.
This year’s pandemic has taken its toll
on us all. Theatres, restaurants and
hotels may have been at the forefront
of the media, but like those businesses,
charities have also seen a huge
drop in vital funds. The cancellation
of sponsored 5k runs, walks and

support more than ever.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness
month and offers the opportunity to
help raise money for research and
support. Buy and wear your pink ribbon

On 23 October, charity Breast Cancer
Now, will be bringing back its ‘Wear it
pink’ event. Since its launch in 2002, the
event has raised over £35million.
Balwinder, aged 56 from Essex, was
diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015
during a routine work medical review,
she said: “When the consultant said
the dreadful words “you have breast
cancer”, I was devastated. I had so many
emotions running through my head,
from anger to disbelief to denial.”
Balwinder was supported by her
husband and son throughout her
chemotherapy, but also reached out
to Breast Cancer Now. “Breast Cancer
Now were a vital lifeline for me,” she
explained. “When I was diagnosed, I was
bombarded with so much information
and I was struggling to get my head
around what was happening. I was put
in touch with Breast Cancer Now and
they helped me understand everything
and guided me through treatment.
“I was also put in touch with a lady
who had been diagnosed with breast
cancer a few years earlier through
Breast Cancer Now’s Someone Like Me
service. This was wonderful because
we could chat about the silly stuff and
holidays, but if I needed advice about
treatment, I could ask her too.”
Since her recovery Balwinder has taken
part in fundraising events such as
bucket collections at her local Asda, a
fashion show and impressively ran 5k
three weeks after her final treatment.
She has helped raise awareness with
local MPs and this year features in the
‘Wear it pink’ campaign.
“I feel really proud to support ‘Wear it
pink’. Breast Cancer Now has done so
much for me and this is my way of giving
back. By taking part, you’ll be making
a difference, helping to fund research
to help save lives and care for people
like me, who are living proof of the
importance of the support they provide
at a very crucial time,” she said.
She also added her words of wisdom:
“Ask for help. Don’t be shy, just ask. If
you need someone to hold your hand
or lend an ear to listen to your worries,
it helps to keep talking! Be kind to
yourself, self-compassion, self-care and
put your needs first ‘top priority’. You
know the old saying ‘many hands make
light work’!”
It’s never been more important to raise
money for breast cancer research and
care. To take part in ‘Wear it pink’ on 23
October for Breast Cancer Now, register

Is orange
the new
black?
Written by Ruth Essex, stylist and style writer
www.ruthessex.com
Is orange the new black? Autumn is the time of year when orange really
comes in to its own. It doesn’t suit everyone in its fruit colour form, but if
you play around with the tones then you will find a shade that works for
you.
Those with warm colouring will be in their element as the shops offer a
bountiful harvest of orange shades. Even for those with cool skin tones,
who generally look better in pinks, do consider the amazing versatility
of a rich chestnut tan for accessories. These don’t tend to get worn near
the face, so are not going to clash with your pink skin undertones.
Tan leather accessories will never go out of fashion and the colour gets
richer over time like the patina on an ancient wooden bannister. As
darker clothes become more prevalent as the nights draw in, a chestnut
or orange handbag can add a lift of colour and opulence to your outfit.
Wearing head-to-toe orange is a bold move and not many would be
courageous enough to consider this on their ‘would it work at Waitrose?’
barometer. So, if orange makes you nervous, maybe just invest in a
silk scarf, a pair of orange leather gloves or a dash of orange in your
shoes. They will easily blend with your tried and tested neutral bases
like chocolate brown, navy, charcoal and black. There is nothing more
classic for autumn than the black and chestnut brown of a riding boot.
For the more adventurous, why not consider pairing your orange with
burgundy or plum? They make stunning combinations. I have an orange
coat I wear with a burgundy handbag and I have a claret red winter coat
I pair with orange leather gloves and an orange wool scarf. Unusual I
grant you, but certainly interesting.
Orange is basically a happy colour and it evokes a sense of warmth
like the sun, and triggers memories of childhood woodland walks and
kicking up leaves.
It adds a little zest into your wardrobe and on a dull or dreary morning,
know you are bringing your own personal dose of sunshine with you.

Shopping at
Braintree
Village
A shopper’s guide to a bagging a bargain
Written by Emma Kemsley

It’s no secret that I love shopping, but I love it even more when
there’s a discount or offer. I’m a savvy shopper, I know how to
play the high street brand apps; maximising the use of discount
codes and waiting for flash sales, but at Braintree Village there’s
no waiting; every store offers great savings on the RRP, all day,
every day.
Braintree Village is an outlet shopping centre in Essex with
over 75 stores such as Reiss, Barbour, BOSS, Radley London,
Tommy Hilfiger and Kurt Geiger – to name a few. It has that cool
American vibe; an outdoor experience with stores purpose built
to feel like you’re shopping in an exclusive location. At the end of
last year the newly expanded Polo Ralph Lauren opened and in
2020 more big names have arrived including Calvin Klein, Kate
Spade New York and Jack & Jones..
Nike and Adidas offer rails loaded with the latest sportswear and
walls stacked with trainers. Lindt and Thornton’s are a haven for
chocolate lovers, there’s make-up galore at the Beauty Outlet
and Molton Brown and Le Creuset are great for picking up
presents.
I visited on a Friday (pre-COVID) to take advantage of one of
the VIP weekends. Braintree Village host a number of pop-up
events throughout the year, which include additional discounts
and special offers.
The M&S Outlet tend to have great offers on childrenswear,
nightwear and lingerie. I purchased khaki trousers, ideal for
cooler early autumn days for just £6. As I was leaving, I noticed
they had stock of a simple, soft crew neck jumper I had worn
plenty in previous months. I swiftly picked up a cream and black
version for £5 each ready for next winter.
The homeware stores are where you can save big bucks,
particularly on bedding. There are a range of styles available. I
bought a ‘hotel collection’ double duvet and pillow set for £20,
marked down from £100 at Julian Charles Home. However,
my favourite purchase of the day was the Loupe Dune London
sandals. Usually £85, I picked up the tan version for £38.50. I
already own a white pair, so I know from experience that they
are the comfiest summer sandal. In fact, I raved about them so
much while in the store, that I convinced another customer to
buy a pair – do you think I’ll get a commission?
When hunger calls, there are plenty of options to refuel. Bagel
Baby is a newbie and the brainchild from Essex-based food
entrepreneurs Becca and Ali, who founded Roo’s Coffee
back in 2017. It sells delicious deli style bagels – yum! The
Cornish Bakery recently opened, and there’s a choice of chain
restaurants such as Bill’s, Pizza Express and Wildwood.
Since COVID, Braintree Village have put safety measures in
place to keep shopper’s safe. There’s a one-way system, hand
sanitising stations and daily alerts via social media to announce
when the complex is busy or at full capacity.
Happy shopping!

Practical

Practical planning and styling tips if you’re moving your
wedding from spring/summer to autumn/winter
Written by Katrina Otter | www.katrinaotterweddings.co.uk

Weddings
With this in mind, here are 10 practical planning and styling tips:
It’s an incredibly surreal and uncertain
time for us all and from a wedding and
wedding planning perspective the
past few months have been filled with
a roller coaster of emotions, additional
work, loss of money, lack of sleep, an
immense amount of disappointment…
and so much more. If you too are
experiencing some or all of the
above, then I wholeheartedly know
how you feel.
If your wedding has been affected
by Coronavirus then firstly, I really do
hope that you’re ok. And secondly, that
you’ve managed to resolve any issues
and in turn have a positive plan in place
moving forwards.
Over my next few features for EastLife
Magazine, I’ll be offering some
insights and practical planning advice
specifically dealing with the affect and
impact that Coronavirus has had on
weddings and wedding planning. I’ll
also aim to cover a range of different
aspects and stages of the planning
process.
This feature is tailored specifically to
help those of you who’ve unfortunately
had to make the difficult decision to
postpone your wedding from this
spring or summer to later in the year
or early next year, but it might also be
beneficial to anyone already planning
or considering an autumn or winter
wedding.

As the sun will set earlier in the day, you may want to consider bringing timings
forward slightly or tweaking the order of events, especially if you envisage certain
elements of the day in natural daylight. Talk to your venue, caterer and especially
your photographer, as they’ll be able to provide plenty of guidance to help you
make the most of the shorter daylight hours.
If you were planning on having elements of your wedding outdoors such as your
drinks reception or group photos, then you’ll need to talk to your venue about
alternative locations and ‘Plan Bs’, and remember to check licenses and room
capacities too. If you have to double up or re-use rooms then also ensure that
you notify your suppliers so that they can factor this into their plans, costings and
staffing. If on the other hand you’re having a marquee wedding, then you’ll need
to talk to your marquee company to ensure that you have enough space for your
reception and dining.
Consider the possibility of alternative inclement weather. Talk to your venue and
suppliers about any plans that they have in place and ask them how they deal
with inclement weather. Also, think about you and your guests and have back-up
plans in place for all extreme weather eventualities.
If you still plan on going outdoors for part of the day, for example to travel
between locations, for photos, confetti etc, then think about you, your wedding
party and your guests – you may want to purchase or hire blankets, throws,
umbrellas and even hand warmers to ensure that you’re all comfortable and
happy throughout the day.
Don’t assume that your guests will come prepared for the weather so talk to your
venue or marquee company about heating and your caterer and bar staff about
warming food and drinks.
With the extra (warming) attire and umbrellas to hand, you’ll also need to
consider additional facilities like coat rails and umbrella stands. Hire these in if
you need to or talk to your venue about coat and bag checking systems,
staffing etc.
From a décor perspective, lighting will now be one of the most important
elements of your wedding and you may need to increase or tweak your budget
to accommodate this – from practical production lighting to lighting to enhance
and elevate your venue and tablescape.
Check with your venue what additional décor they have in place, especially
around Christmas. If it’s not to your taste, then now’s the time to ask whether
anything can be taken down or replaced.
Talk to your suppliers about seasonality and whether or not this will affect your
wedding – from your colour palette and choice of flowers to what food and drink
you serve your guests. It may be that you need to completely revisit your design
concept as well as attend another food tasting, especially to ensure that your
menu ticks those seasonal and more hearty boxes.
From an attire perspective staying warm is key so you may want to consider a
dress with long sleeves, striking ankle boots, capes (my personal fave), velvet
blazers and statement faux-fur accessories for your maids. And whilst we’re on
the subject of attire, talk to your hair and makeup artist about bridal prep and how
to keep you skin hydrated and hair glossy in the cooler months.

Mercedes-Benz
EQC
By Sue Cooke | Twitter: @cookecars
I’ve been driving in an ethereal Mercedes-Benz world of quiet, luxury and beauty.
When the man came to pick the EQC up, I even felt a little old tug of the heart
strings as I handed the keys over.
I absolutely fell in love with the crossover SUV with its avant garde style unique to
the all-electric range. The EQC is the first Mercedes-Benz model under the new
product and technology brand, the EQ, which pioneers dynamic performance
generated by two electric motors at the front and rear axles.
Power is instant when I press the accelerator and as I ease up, unlike the jerky
reaction and sudden braking of some electric vehicles, the EQC slows down
gradually. The range wasn’t an issue during my week of driving because the
80kWh lithium ion battery has a generous mileage of 259 (WLTP) and will
regenerate when coasting. The output is 408hp and 62mph from standstill can be
reached in 5.1 seconds. Top speed is 111mph.
But it’s always looks that turn my head and as I set out on a journey at dusk, the
automatic multibeam LED headlights soar into life with the most entertaining light
show that I have ever seen. A multitude of lights dance into view, flutter, then rise
to a majestic static encore. I have to admit that when I return home, I ensure that I
back onto the drive and switch the ignition on and off a couple of times, just in case
the people who live over the road didn’t see the show the first-time round!
Facts at a Glance:
Model: Mercedes-Benz EQC AMG Line
4Matic
Price: £67,715otr
Battery: Lithium ion high voltage with
electric motor
Electric range: 232-259 WLTP
Charging Time: Public rapid charging –
40 mins. Wallbox 11 hours.
Performance: 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds and
on to a top speed of 112 mph
CO2 emissions: 0g/km
Transmission: Single speed automatic
When I have my fill of the lighting, the extremely quiet interior continues the
entertainment. The MBUX multimedia system displays the range, the charge status
and energy flow. Me and the innovative ‘Hey Mercedes’ virtual assistant get on
very well. She expertly calculates the fastest route I need to take, with the shortest
charging time and even tells me where the nearest charging points are.
The Active Parking Assist gives a very clear view of the road behind. Other features
I appreciate are blind spot assist, keyless-Go, head up display and heated front
seats. The very large touchscreen media display and instrument cluster stretches
seamlessly across the centre console and behind the steering wheel. Ambient
lighting has a choice of 64 colours. The AMG Line has a startling blue optical line of
carbon fibre trim.
The large boot has a double layer for usefully hiding any items. The tailgate
automatically opens and closes by pressing a button on the key fob. Storage in
the interior is also huge with a wide area inside each door and there is a very deep
large covered storage area between the front seats.
The combination of beauty, luxury and extreme quiet in the new Mercedes-Benz
EQC will be very difficult to forget.
Sue Cooke reviewed the EQC prior to the lockdown restrictions.

Three top, totally
safe, savings!
Millions of people, across the nation have money
sitting in high street savings accounts earning
diddly-squat, often at 0.1% or less. Many of you are
scared to move your money as you want safety. Yet
there’s currently a way you can earn over ten times
that amount and it’s 100% safe.
This is the worst time for savers I can remember. UK interest
rates are 0.1% – the lowest in the Bank of England’s 325-year
history. The only way to get a half-decent return, is to become
an active, disloyal, aggressive saver, shifting from best rate to
best rate.
So, everyone CHECK NOW WHAT YOUR SAVINGS PAY, owt less
than 1% likely needs sorting. Below are the top ways to save, at
the time of writing, but for more detail, and daily updated best
buys see www.moneysavingexpert.com/topsavings.
The three top easy access savings
accounts are all totally safe
If you want an easy-access account where you can put
money in and withdraw when you like, then currently and
unprecedentedly, the top-paying easy-access savings all
come from by far the safest place – www.nsandi.com, the
Government-backed savings institution. So, there’s really no
excuses to be earning anything less than these…
1. NS&I Income Bonds: 1.16% AER (min £500). It’s the
highest payer and can be operated online. Deposits and
withdrawals must be in chunks of at least £500, and interest
is paid monthly into a separate account (so you don’t earn
compounded interest – unless you then put it back in).
2. NS&I Direct Saver: 1% AER (min £1). It’s simple and can be
operated online. You have full flexibility on withdrawals and
deposits, and interest is paid into the account annually and
compounds.
3. NS&I Investment Account: 0.8% AER (min £20). This is similar
to the Direct Saver, but is postal only.
An added boon with NS&I is that it’s 100% safe. While all
UK-regulated savings accounts are protected up to £85,000
per person per institution under the UK safe savings scheme,
but for those with more, as NS&I is Government-backed it’s all
protected – even if you’re lucky enough to have millions – which
many of these accounts allow you to put in.
These accounts also smash the pants of the next top rates.
www.ybs.co.uk is 0.8% AER, but minimum deposit is £10,000,
for less www.saga.co.uk is 0.75%.
And while fixed rates normally smash easy-access, as you have
to lock your money away, right now NS&I beats the top 1 year
and 2 year fixes.
Rates are variable, but I’d be surprised
if they dropped
NS&I’s rules say it must give you two months’ notice. Yet
crucially the government’s just told NS&I to increase its
fundraising from £6bn in March to £35bn now (when you save
you’re lending the govt your cash – and it needs it), so its rates
are likely to stay strong to ensure that happens. I suspect it will
very much fight to be the best buy and possibly even launch
new products.
Have debts? For most it’s better to pay
these off first
If you’re paying interest on credit cards or overdrafts and loans
(barring student loans), it’s usually far better to pay those off with
any savings, just double check for early repayment penalties
on loans. As the interest they charge is much higher than the
amount you earn in savings.

Business tips to stay visible in a remote world
There’s no doubt that businesses were forced to rapidly adapt how they operate
when the COVID lockdown slammed into our world of work. The shift from working
practices that were built upon the face-to-face interactions to digital-powered remote
environments was fast and is likely to leave a longer legacy of remote working adoption
in the future.
Although many are embracing the home working and teams are finding new ways to be
efficient, one of the most crucial areas of doing business is still finding its feet – the task
of finding new business. Sales teams have had many of their typical lead-generation
and business-winning activities whisked away due to the inability to connect in person,
and so they are having to find a new normal that helps to drive interest from new
customers or clients.
In a remote new business setting, visibility is key. People are spending, work is being
won and pounds are still being spent. But unless you are only hoping to win work from
your own network or existing clients, ways need to be found that ensure you are top of
the pile when your customers start searching.
Written by Kirsty Jarvis,
Founder & CEO at Luminous PR
www.luminouspr.com
The good news is that being visible in a remote environment is doable, but you will
need to put a sharp focus on working out how to get noticed, and where your potential
new clients hang out in an online environment. Online media consumption went
through the roof during lockdown and has shown no sign of tailing off, so it’s important
to be able to line yourself up to be able to take advantage of an appetite that is growing
and here to stay.
Firstly, if you haven’t fully embraced social media yet, now is the time. Businesses
should be looking open and busy to the outside world, so make sure that you are
sharing case studies, company news and things you are doing from a CSR perspective
that might make you relevant to any business looking for your services. This will force
you to think cleverly about your content and blog strategy too. Putting the insight and
clever thinking into words that can be shared and might catch the attention of a target
client should be at the heart of your plans. What matters to them? Can you show that
you understand the challenges they are facing? How can you show them that you are
the experts and the only ones to call?
Social media and Google also offer you lots of options to advertise your thoughts and
services in clever ways, giving additional opportunities to put your brand and your
thinking in front of the people that are not only relevant, but who are also searching for
you. The audience targeting is sophisticated and with the right plan, your leads will be
delivered to your door without the need for face to face networking or prospect calls to
empty offices.
Finally, if new potential clients don’t know you yet, be aware of how much research they
will do about you before they make a decision to hire you, or even pick up the phone.
Think about how you present to the world in an online environment. How can you find
ways to show your credibility and validate your expertise? Think about ways where
other parties can help you be relevant and expand visibility of what you have to say. PR,
virtual speaking engagements, webinars and contributing thought-leadership articles to
publications that are respected by your target clients are all things that help you to stay
forefront of people’s minds.

At Home with Eilidh
Whether you are exploring locally or further afield, with a little pre-planning you can
leave only your footprints behind and it will save you money too.
Backpack
You will need a decent sized bag to be
able to carry water bottles, snacks and
everything else with you. Don’t try and
cram it all into an oversized handbag as
it will weigh you down. If you have kids,
as they get older, they can carry their
items in their own backpack!
Don’t forget your
reusable water bottle
This saves us so much money, and with
more places joining schemes like Refill
Bedford, it is now easier than ever to fill
your water bottle up when you are out
and about. If you like your water cold,
opt for an insulated bottle.
Hand gel
At the moment hand gel is a must. Check
out Proverb, who offer a refillable plant
powered hand sanitizer or Evolve, whose
organic liquid hand sanitizer comes in a
glass bottle. Both companies give one for
everyone you buy to charities, those on
the front line and people most in need.
Mini first aid kit
Put together a little first aid kit with as
many natural and plastic free items as
you can. Aloe Vera is good for stings and
rashes, whilst bamboo plasters are not
only eco-friendly but great for anyone
with sensitive skin.
Pack snacks
It’s not a fun day out with hangry people
so make sure you pack snacks and
lunch if you are planning on staying
out for longer. Try to opt for making
your own sandwiches than buying
pre-packaged ones, and any packaging
you do end up with, take home to be
recycled. If you do stop for a coffee and
cake, try out independent places rather
than large chains.
Wipes
If you’re taking wipes with you, then the
best option is either using a pre-made
wet set or taking a couple of dry flannels,
old cut up squares of material or bamboo
rounds. You can wet with water as
needed either with some water from
your bottle, a tap or a spray bottle. Pack
a mini waterproof bag to store any used
wipes in to take home and wash. If you
really can’t give up on wet wipes, try to
get genuinely biodegradable ones and
never flush them!

A real fire is one of the great joys of the cooler nights. Here are our five tips to ensure you get the best from yours:
1
Make sure that you have your chimney regularly
swept by a reliable and competent chimney sweep.
Chimney sweeps get very busy in the autumn and winter
3
once people start to use their fires so you may need
to book well in advance. If your fire is in regular use it
should be swept at least once a year to reduce the risk of
chimney fires or blocked flues causing fumes and smoke
to re-enter the room. Even if you do not use your fire that
often it is still worth having it swept annually as birds often
nest in unused chimneys in spring and summer.
4
2
Choose the right fuel for your fire. Log burners
need well-seasoned logs. Hard wood logs will usually
burn for longer than soft wood, but they may need
more seasoning after cutting before you can use them.
A Victorian and Edwardian style grate will need a
smokeless coal.
A multi-fuel stove is often the best choice as you can burn
wood or smokeless coal products. Free or cheap fuel for
your log burner or fire can be readily sourced by scouring
industrial estates and asking businesses if they have any
wood scraps. Window companies often have offcuts they
may be looking to dispose of. This sort of wood is great
for getting your fire going as it is usually very dry and
burns quickly.
5
Kindling is required to get your fire going.
Try scrunched up newspaper and some light twigs.
Offcuts of pine work really well. Starting at the base with
paper, then kindling, then wood, build your fire in layers.
Once the fire is going you may add larger pieces of wood
or coal-based products to the fire depending on the type
of fireplace it is.
If you have an open fire it is wise to have a fire guard
and large stone or tiled hearth. This is to reduce the
risk of sparks jumping out of fire and setting fire to the
house and also to prevent children or animals touching
fire or inadvertently falling on to it.
Clean your fireplace out regularly. Ash will
accumulate under your fire and this needs to be removed
when it is cold, or it will eventually cause a blockage. A lot
of modern log burners have an easily removable ash tray
that can be taken outside and emptied. If not, it is back to
a metal bucket and a small metal shovel. The ash can be
added to your compost heap.

Lovell
Homes
offers its
top tips for
homebuyers
Written by Adrian Garrood,
regional sales manager at Lovell
Moving home can be very confusing, with masses of
information available which can often make the process feel
overwhelming.
Top tips for ensuring purchasers can make the most out of their
home moving experience include:
1. Research the area and developer
Before committing to a new-build property, do thorough
research into the area you want to live in and into the
housebuilder. Find out what developments they’ve built in the
past, as this will provide a good insight into the quality of their
homes.
2. Get the most out of your first
appointment at the development
Exploring the development and showhomes available is
hugely beneficial, and is an ideal opportunity to talk with sales
executives to find out more about if the development suits your
requirements.
3. Ask what is included in your new
build
Finding out exactly what your new home includes before
signing a contract is hugely important and will avoid any future
problems. By querying with the developer about white goods,
gardens, parking arrangements and more, you can ensure that
your home will perfectly suit your needs before moving in.
4. Take advantage of the Governmentbacked
Help to Buy: Equity Loan
scheme
For first and second-time buyers, the Help to Buy scheme can
massively help financially. Brand-new properties can be bought
with just a 5% deposit, and the remaining amount is made up of
a 75% mortgage and a 20% equity loan, which is interest free for
the first five years.
5. Use the Part Exchange scheme
The Part Exchange scheme guarantees a genuine cash buyer,
meaning purchasers can have a stress and hassle-free buying
experience, and eliminates the need to pay estate agent fees.
6. Research the reservation process
Once you’ve selected a property, keep on top of the reservation
process. This is a great time to discuss the above-mentioned
financial schemes, or contact an Independent Financial Adviser
if you need extra support.

Gardens
by Ade
Written by Ade Sellars
There’s no getting away from the fact there’s a change in the air. With days
getting shorter and nights getting longer, it’s time to say farewell to the warm
embrace of summer, as there’s a new season waiting in the wings; hello autumn!
perennials can be lifted, divided and
re-planted, increasing your flower
stock next year. For protection against
dropping temperatures, ensure you
mulch around the plant. Don’t cover
them over, as this will encourage rot.
Despite fading flowers and falling
temperatures, autumn can be a glorious
time. Its palette is awash with rich golds,
fiery reds and burnt oranges. Fruits
and vegetables are ripe for the picking,
ready to be stored and turned into hot
soups and warm treats for the colder
months ahead.
On gardens and allotments, we need
to make ready for winter, but also keep
one eye ahead to spring. Clean the
greenhouse, clear away the used veg
beds and plant those spring bulbs,
making the most of the mild weather
before first frosts arrive.
After a very dry summer, and with
constant use, lawns will need your
attention. Re-lay any bare patches with
new turf or re-sow seeds directly into the
soil. Scarify, aerate and apply a dressing
to the lawn. Keep edging in check and
remove any fallen foliage. Any leaf buildup
can harbour pests, stop light getting
to your lawn and create a ‘browning
off’ effect.
Your perennials will have seen better
days, but these plants can still offer
benefits for wildlife searching for food
throughout the colder months, so I’d
always encourage you to keep them
if you can. Otherwise, cut the plants
back to the base. Summer flowering
Dahlia bulbs can be lifted, and their
foliage cut back to several centimetres
above the tuber. Turned upside down,
they should be left a day or two to
drain. Once dried, they can be stored
somewhere cool, dark and frost free.
Speaking of bulbs, spring bulbs can
now be planted either straight into the
ground or into pots and containers.
Ensure they’re planted three times the
height of the bulb, and don’t let them sit
in water throughout winter. If drainage is
a problem for your soil, add horticultural
grit to the base of the hole, as this will
help the water to seep away. Bulbs
worth considering are tulips, daffodils
and alliums.
Now’s the time to clean the greenhouse.
Dispose of old plants and remove all
empty pots and containers, as these
maybe harbouring pests. If you’re
planning to grow anything in the next
few months, such as winter salad or
hardy spinach, then your greenhouse
will need as much light and warmth as
possible. Seeds such as sweet peas,
centaurea and poppies can be sown
into trays or modules. Don’t let them dryout
and as temperatures slowly start to
drop, ensure preparations are made to
see them through the colder months.
If you’ve been harvesting apples and
pears and are planning to store them,
ensure none are spoilt and place them
apart on dry sand in a paper-lined box.
Store them somewhere dark and cool,
such as a pantry or cellar, and check
every so often to make sure none have
gone off.
Garlic needs a good cold period to help
develop its cloves, so plant them now
and leave over winter. In well-drained,
fertile soil, place the individual cloves at
20cm apart, in rows 30cms apart. You
should only see the tips of the cloves.
You may want to cover over with either
a fleece or netting, just to stop birds from
pulling them up.
If you’re leaving vegetable beds empty
over winter, turn the soil to aerate it and
to expose hiding pests.
Finally, your squashes and pumpkins
should be looking their best, and with
their vines cracked and withered, this is
the time to cut them away. Place them
somewhere dry and bright for a few days
so the skins can harden off.
If it’s a Halloween pumpkin you’re hoping
to carve, this is a great opportunity to get
children involved with the allotment or
growing patch. Not only will they have
seen the pumpkin grown from seed, but
they’ll get to harvest and enjoy it. Make
sure you don’t waste the flesh though;
pumpkins make tasty autumn soups,
curries and risottos! In fact, why not try
our recipe for pumpkin and chilli soup:

The Arts

‘Step by Step III’ by Magdelena Morey
at The Darryl Nantais Gallery
Galleries have long promoted professional and aspiring artists. It is an amazing and
wonderful, yet sometimes very difficult vocation. Choosing individuals that you trust
and utterly believe in is a soul-searching task, for both the gallery and the artist. So why
do they feel that they need each other?
Many involved in the creative sector reject the theory that art is simply a matter of
taste. For them it is essential that created works meet particular criteria such as depth,
meaning, creativity, skill and occasionally beauty. Whether a piece meets these criteria
can be open to opinion, but most agree that it should.
Both galleries and artists have always had very strong opinions on what art is and
whether it is good. Rarely do they all agree on every aspect but there is, unsurprisingly,
a substantial area of common ground. Artists like to be represented by galleries that
share the same beliefs as themselves. They are thrilled to be exhibited with the peers
that they admire.
Similarly, curators can find themselves regularly drawn to the same new talents as their
competitors. For example, Andrew Farmer ROI and Magdalena Morey are constantly
approached by talent spotters and are able to choose the representation that suits
them best.
Once a relationship is forged between artist and gallery, expectations will be
established. If the importance of the art is to be more than surface deep, then it must
be nurtured and understood. The gallery will invest huge amounts of time and capital
in exhibiting the works, both physically and online. In return for their investment, they
will keep a share of the proceeds once the work is sold. The artist will strive to create
honest pieces that genuinely reflect their feelings and engage the potential appreciator.
It is a hard line for both to follow and the balance between integrity and finance is often
challenged. Both parties must understand and acknowledge what they provide for
each other.
‘Woodland Sunset’ by Andrew Farmer
at Norton Way Gallery
It is imperative that the mutual respect and hard work of the artist and gallery combine
through a genuinely shared artistic ethic. Once this is found and developed, they are
then able to find each precious piece of work a new and loving home.

Norfolk Art Collective
A Norfolk art collective is set to take part in a collaboration with The Munnings Art
Museum from 9-13 September.
Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle was established in 1885 following Crome & Cotman’s
famous Norwich Society of Artists and boasts Sir Alfred Munnings as one of its founding
members. Now, the group is teaming up with the museum dedicated to Munnings and
his work to mark their strong links with the artist.
The group, which boasts more than 200 professional and amateur members, will
display a range of artworks in various mediums – including painting, 3D and sculpture –
and on various subjects.
The exhibition will take place at The Munnings Art Museum in Colchester and will be
staged in a marquee in the grounds of the museum. On Sunday 13 September it will be
complemented by a live demonstration by artists Sue Williams and John Shave in the
garden. Entry is free. www.nnartcircle.com
New East End Gallery Display at The Sainsbury Centre
The Sainsbury Centre has announced a new East End gallery display of two alabaster
stone sculptures by Anish Kapoor: ‘Involute, 2017’ and ‘Untitled, 2010’.
This is presented as part of a major exhibition on show across the grounds and historic
interiors of Houghton Hall.
Anish Kapoor is considered one of the most important sculptors working today. Born in
1954, Kapoor started exhibiting his seminal pigment works in the early 80s and rose to
prominence as part of the New British Sculpture movement.
The two alabaster works that Kapoor has selected to show at the Sainsbury Centre
have been created through the carving process of negative space into positive form;
they demonstrate Kapoor’s interest in the void of deep dark space and the interior state
of the object.
The works are free to view. www.sainsburycentre.ac.uk

A Day in
Saffron
Walden
Saffron Walden combines the best of both worlds. It’s where
old meets new. You can often feel as though you’ve been
transported to a time gone by while doing your grocery
shopping. A wander around the cobbled streets, while
popping into independent boutiques and admiring the historic
architecture is a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Things to do
The Market
Stop by on market day. Tuesday’s is more traditional mainly
aimed at locals but on Saturday the buzzing market has a
cosmopolitan edge, selling local produce, antiques, flowers,
crafts and more. Buy a bottle of wine and a tasty loaf and sit
down at a barrel at the fishmonger stand where you can share
seafood platters! www.saffronwalden.gov.uk/markets
The Common
Visit the manicured lawns of The Common. Great for picnics,
balls games and dog walks. There’s also a newly refurbished
playground and turf maze! It’s home to pop up events and
markets throughout the year.

Bridge End Garden
Hidden in the back streets of the town, the grade II listed space
consists of seven interlinked gardens and popular hedge maze.
The Turf Labyrinth, another maze which twists and turns, is sure
to be a hit with children.

Audley End Miniature Railway
A massive hit with families, the railway trails through the forest
where children can spot teddies that live in the woods. There’s
also an Enchanted Fairy and Elf Walk and picnic and play area –
great for when the warmer weather arrives! There are seasonal
events too! www.audley-end-railway.co.uk
Saffron Screen
The town features an independent community cinema, which
has a full programme of films, screenings and concerts.

Shopping
If you have a love of all things fashion, then you’ll adore Saffron
Walden’s independent boutique scene. Dotted throughout
the town are stylish stores housing high end designers and
relatively unknown brands. Stop by Ruby Rooms for the
latest fashions or Blue for timeless classic style staples and
accessories.
If it’s home décor or a special present you need visit Talents;
a small store filled with quirky items and gift ideas, while the
Corner Cupboard is great for fine jewellery and stylish home
furnishings. For a home overhaul visit Lottie Mutton, which
offers interior design services and home accessories.
Eat and drink
Saffron Walden’s crooked timber clad buildings are home to
a number of pubs. The Eight Bells is a stylish gastro pub; sink
into one of the buttery leather armchairs with a drink or book a
table in the oak beamed restaurant. The Market Place is a great
option for cocktails and tapas.

Cambridge’s University Arms
is the place to go for a safe and
stylish staycation
As more of us opt for a staycation following the pandemic, it’s
natural to feel nervous about planning a getaway. I’ll admit I felt
the same when I decided to enjoy a night in Cambridge post
lockdown, however upon check-in at the University Arms, that
anxiety slipped away.
My husband and I were greeted by friendly reception staff
who wore either a visor or mask, and there were gold hand
sanitisation stations at all entrances, perfectly in-keeping with
the hotel’s luxurious décor. Though valet parking is currently
suspended, a member of the concierge team, who wore a mask
and gloves, showed us to the car park and escorted us back to
reception.
Polite notices are present at the elevators, explaining a policy
of ‘only one person per lift unless you are from the same
household’. The sanitising package in our room was a nice
touch too.
Armed with our masks and gloves, we wandered around the
city. Alternatively, you could borrow the hotel’s complimentary
bicycles, all of which are disinfected after each use. There is a
one-way system in place in the city’s streets and most visitors
were abiding by the rules. It was refreshing to see people al
fresco dining, socially distanced of course, and punts up and
down the river. It offered a sense of normality; a sign life is
returning to normal in a safe manner.
We chose to dine at the hotel’s restaurant, Parker’s Tavern. The
restaurant is a must try. Think hearty meat dishes, British classics
and tasty Norfolk fish. Open to guests and non-residents, half
the tables have been removed to allow more space for social
distanced dining and the restaurant staff wear masks. There’s
also a newly launched al fresco dining space on Parker’s Piece
featuring bright coloured deckchairs and tables dressed in
pristine white tablecloths.
University Arm’s décor and grand stature is impressive.
Immaculately designed with shiny brass, historic fireplaces
and buttery tan leather. If you’d prefer not to venture out into
the city, the hotel alone provides a blissful hideaway. The
rooms are spacious, beautifully designed and in-keeping with
Cambridge’s rich history. The terrace rooms offer spectacular
views over Parker’s Piece and a free-standing bathtub – simply
divine!
At present only rooms with natural ventilation are being used.
The stationary has been removed and each room is left for 24
hours between guest departures.
General manager, Ian James, gave an insight into the extra
safety measures in place, all of which happen without
disturbing the guests. This includes hourly bathroom and
luggage cart cleansing, and a nightly disinfectant spraying of all
the surfaces.
If you’re currently undecided on your staycation destination,
then look no further than the charming city of Cambridge. The
University Arms have you covered for a safe and blissful night’s
sleep and the independent businesses will welcome you with
open arms…from a safe two-metre distance of course!

Secret Norfolk:
A Great Adventure
The best outdoor experiences in Norfolk
Sure, there are big beaches and miles of stunning countryside,
but have you ever seen Norfolk up close? Close enough to
feel the sea salt whip your face or hear the pitter patter of deer
hooves? There are plenty of opportunities to get back to nature
in Norfolk. Make sure you add these activities to your next trip.
North Norfolk Safaris
There’s no need to travel to Africa for a thrilling safari, this is a
real back to nature experience. Hop into the classic Land Rover,
and let the excitement build as you bump across meadows and
splash through water to find close encounters with Norfolk’s
wildlife. Experiences are available for one or two people at a
time, in order not to disturb the habitat or wildlife. Your guide will
take you to remote marshes and hidden hideaways where you’ll
catch a glimpse of owls, hares and more. From autumn to early
spring opt for the ‘Wild Goose Chase’ where you’ll track down
and watch the pink footed geese. Don’t forget your camera!
Price from £80 pp.

North Norfolk Paddle Boards
Let’s set the scene; the water is gently lapping at your board,
the sky is on fire and there’s only quietness as you watch the
sun dip below the horizon. It’s easy to see why paddleboarding
or SUP as it is also known, has become hugely popular. It’s a
great way to explore the water, and you don’t need to be an
expert. It’s surprisingly easy to stand up and softly paddle along
the marshes. Hire and tours are available at Brancaster Staithe,
Burnham Overy Staithe and Wells-next-the-Sea.

A Trip to
King’s Lynn
Full of history, King’s Lynn is a great
destination offering a superb mix of
heritage, shopping and entertainment.
With its historic waterfront, cobbled
lanes flanked by medieval merchant’s
houses and two magnificent
marketplaces, the town is a treat to
discover and explore.
At the heart of the medieval old town,
King’s Lynn Minster dominates the
Saturday Market Place, also home to
some fine architecture including the
distinctive Trinity Guildhall and historic
Town Hall complex.
Take a short walk past the grand
buildings and merchants houses of
King Street and Queen Street, towards
the magnificent Tuesday Market
Place, probably one of England’s
grandest squares and home to the Corn
Exchange, now a thriving concert hall.
Walks & Tours
A great way to explore the town is to follow the King’s Lynn Maritime Trail. Discover the
town’s history as a premier English seaport, the stories of its merchants, ship builders,
sailors, fishermen, press gangs, porters and pubs which have played key roles in its
history.
Join one of the regular guided walks with the King’s Lynn Town Guides. Walks run
regularly on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons from May through to October.
History
Visit the Tourist Information Centre and maritime displays at the Custom House to find
out more about the host of places such as True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum and nearby St
Nicholas’ Chapel, Lynn Museum, King’s Lynn Minster, Marriott’s Warehouse, Greyfriars
Tower and Gardens or the classic 18th century town park known as ‘The Walks’. Here
you can indulge in discovering more of King’s Lynn’s rich history and heritage. A great
place to start your visit is the iconic Custom House with its elegant rooms, views of the
river and displays that tell of the famous mariners of Lynn – including Vancouver and
Nelson – as well as its merchants, customs men and smugglers.
Shopping
As you stroll through the cobbled streets, you’ll find large brand names at every turn.
The Vancouver Quarter is the main hub for national retailers and has established itself
as the town’s destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. Throughout the year
it holds regular promotions, events and fun days for visitors.
Entertainment
Stay active and visit Alive West Norfolk for sporting facilities and activities. For theatre,
comedy, dance and musicals, check out the programme of performances at King’s
Lynn Corn Exchange.

Hitchin
Herts
innovative
town adapts
to succeed
Hitchin is a beautiful historic market town in North Hertfordshire,
renowned for its independent shops, cafés and restaurants,
vibrant music scene and bustling markets.
With popular attractions such as Hitchin Lavender’s stunning
summer displays, the British Schools Museum and the cobbled
Market Place with its buildings dating back to the 15th century,
it’s easy to see why Hitchin has become a favourite tourist
destination.
Throughout lockdown and beyond, The Hitchin Business
Improvement District (BID) team has been working hard with
local businesses readying the town to welcome back both
locals and visitors.
Visitor safety
By providing subsidised PPE, external floor stickers and signage,
the BID team has eased the financial pressures on local
businesses of reopening post lockdown. To help customers
shop safely, outdoor hand sanitiser stations have been installed
throughout the town along with social distancing signage.
Hitchin BID is also working with the Council on reducing traffic
by increasing pedestrianisation of the narrower areas of the
town.
Launch of hitchinbasket.com
The BID’s new website hitchinbasket.com highlights what
the town centre has to offer by allowing customers to search
for specific products and services available. All town centre
businesses are featured with a profile, opening times and
up-to-date information which customers can easily access.
Eat Alfresco
The BID’s ‘Eat Alfresco’ initiative has been a fantastic success,
transforming Hitchin’s Market Place into an outdoor eating area
with live music for local cafés and restaurants. It runs for seven
days a week 10am-7.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am-
9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays until the end of September.
Tom Hardy, Town Centre Manager, said: “Although this is an
incredibly challenging time for Hitchin, I have been impressed
by businesses’ ability to adapt and come up with ways to
continue trading. This situation has highlighted the importance
of our town centre businesses and community. When this crisis
has passed, I’m confident that Hitchin will be stronger and more
resilient to future challenges.”
Hitchin’s innovation has secured its status as a jewel in
Hertfordshire’s crown. It’s a small town with a big heart and is
well worth a visit.

Bright
Future for
Bedford
Undeterred by the exceptional challenges of 2020, Bedford is
forging ahead with its plans for the future.
Town Centre Improvements
Works to improve Bedford’s town centre are continuing,
including changes to encourage pedestrians and cyclists and
provide a more pleasant shopping experience. Mayor Dave
Hodgson said: “We are looking to the future to ensure our town
centre continues to thrive in these difficult times.”
Higgins Bedford
The art gallery and museum, located in the 19th century
buildings of Castle Brewery, has reopened. Home to a world
renowned art collection, visitors will once again be able to enjoy
displays telling the story of the local area, alongside nationally
significant collections of art and design.
Shopping
Bedford offers a wealth of choice for shoppers with the modern
Harpur Centre housing national brands alongside independent
stores. Explore the historic arcades and back streets and you’ll
discover even more stores. Samantha Laycock, Harpur Centre
manager, commented: “It has been wonderful to welcome
customers back and I know our town has a bright future ahead.”
Outdoor spaces
Bedford’s beautiful parks and open spaces have provided a
lifeline in recent months. The Embankment is a glorious sight
with over 20,000 flowers planted by the Council, bringing a
swathe of colour along this stretch of the River Great Ouse.
Festivals
New dates have been announced for Bedford’s biggest festivals
which were due to take place this year. The incredibly popular
River Festival will now go ahead on 17 and 18 July 2021 while
the Bedford Kite and Motoring Festival will return to Russell Park
and the Embankment on 12 and 13 June.
A Place to Stay
Following a multi-million pound investment, The Bedford Swan
Hotel now boasts 113 stunning bedrooms, including a palatial
honeymoon suite, an enlarged dining space at the Pen & Cob
brasserie, extended Terrace overlooking the river, a new lounge,
transformed function rooms and Anna’s, a perfect place for
