THE HISTORY OF ULLA POPKEN

1880 Johann Popken founded the Popken textile house in Hameln,

Germany

1968 Friedrich Popken and his wife Ursula (Ulla) opened the first

maternity specialty shop „Mami & Baby“ in Oldenburg, Germany

1977-1984 Establishment of a nationwide branch chain and mail

order business and start as a franchisor

01.03.1987 Entry of „Ulla Popken, Junge Mode ab Größe 42“ in

the commercial register;

Opening of the first 10 Ulla Popken branches

1998 Start of Ulla Popken‘s online shops

2008 Change of history: Astrid Popken, daughter of Ulla and Friedrich

Popken, and her husband Thomas Schneider become owners

2011 Opening of the first branches of the new men‘s label JP1880

2012 Acquisition of GINA LAURA GmbH & Co. KG

2012 Foundation of the Popken Fashion Group

THE IDEA

Friedrich Popken saw an employee packing more than 15 maternity

items for a customer shipment. This prompted him to ask the

staff member why a pregnant woman had ordered so many items.

The answer was unexpected: “This customer is not pregnant. She

regularly orders from us and has told us that she cannot find fashion

that is both youthful and her size, 54. That‘s why she ordered

from us because our maternity wear is not only young, but also

comfortable.

A niche was discovered in the „young fashion for large sizes“ market

and detailed studies were carried out in 1986. Customers were

carefully surveyed. The results exceeded all expectations and on

March 1st, 1987 the company „Ulla Popken, Young Fashion from

size 48“ was registered.

In the same year, 10 new Ulla Popken retail stores opened, paving

the way for unprecedented success and expansion.

On March 11, 2008, the business was taken over by the new generation.

Friederich Popken transferred his majority stake to daughter

Astrid and son-in-law Thomas Schneider.

Schneider takes over the management on July 1, 2008

the company.

Johann Popken, who founded the Popken clothing company in Hameln in 1880 and thus
