Tips & Techniques – “Round Pen”
Tighten Your Girth in Three Stages
While there’s no golden rule for how tight you should cinch your horse, remember that you should tighten it in stages. The first time I cinch
the horse snugly, but I don’t cut him in half. I want to give him a chance to warm up and get comfortable before I really cinch him up. I’ll do
groundwork for about 5 minutes, and then I’ll check the girth and tighten it a little more. I’ll do groundwork again for 5 to 10 minutes and
then I’ll tighten my girth for the third time.
The third time I do the cinch up, I really do it up tight. You may have heard me tell a joke about this on tour. I often say that when I tighten
a girth up, I tighten it so tight the horse’s eyes roll back in his head. Even though that’s obviously a joke, I really do make it a point to do
girths up snugly.
When the horse is warmed up and mentally ready, I’m not afraid to cinch him up tight. The reality is most people don’t tighten the cinch up
nearly enough. This isn’t just careless - it’s dangerous. When a saddle slips under a horse’s belly, whoever’s riding him is going to end up
in a massive wreck. If you’ve warmed your horse up and given him time to get used to the saddle before really cinching him up tight, you
should be able to cinch him up quite snugly without making him feel uncomfortable.
Thank you Scandia Riders Saddle Club for a wonderful year end banquet. If you
missed it, here is a quick re-cap:
All of the tables were decorated by SRSC members. The Erickson family table
caught the eye of the majority and one a “Best Table” prize! We enjoyed a
bountiful potluck meal followed by a year in review slide show.
Everyone bid on great silent auction items and the club raised over $1,200. We
beat last year’s total! Thanks to Sonia Borg for chairing the silent auction as well
as the many generous businesses and individuals who donated.
Year end awards were presented by Pam and Linda. SRSC 2012 royalty (listed
on pg. 2) held a personal items/soap drive. We received over 50lbs of personal
items that were donated to the Alexander House in Blaine. Laura Kemmis, being
our greatest donor, won a prize.
The end of the night left Gayle, Hannah, and Bridget locking up. Someone
(Bridget) dropped the key in the mail slot thinking the doors would lock behind
us. We also realized should anyone drop a key in the slot you can get it back out
with a hanger and double stick mounting tape.
Thank you all for a great banquet!
Bridget
The Erickson family took home the prize for “Best
Table” with an Old West theme.
Kayla Erickson, and Katie Crum.
