The Radio Universe: Perspectives in Instrumentation and Data Science was a scientific
meeting that brought together researchers and students working with radio
astronomy as a whole (http://www.inpe.br/radiouniverse/2019/). The main
motivation was to bring together scientists to celebrate, in a research and technology
environment, the 80th birthday of Professor Hanumant S. Sawant, one of the
pioneers of solar radio astronomy in India and Latin America. The meeting, which
brought together about seventy participants, took place in August 2019, at the LIT-
INPE facilities in S.J. dos Campos, SP, Brazil.

Foreword
Valuing a person, a career and a life that reaches and exceeds its
eighty years of existence should be a more frequent practice in
our society. In the scientific community we have this
commitment almost always fulfilled.
As it could not be otherwise, when reaching the age of eighty,
the researcher Hanumant Sawant, who was our dear advisor,
deserves this tribute from us.
On this occasion, there is nothing more appropriate than
bringing together close persons as students, teachers and
researchers to celebrate doing one of the things we most
appreciate: discussing and presenting scientific results. In this
special opportunity, related to radio astronomy.
Therefore, this workshop's main objective is instrumental radio
astronomy and data analysis, which permeated the career of this
honored researcher. Obviously, it is worthy to tell a little of his
biography and for that reason some speeches are dedicated to
remember and review topics of solar and instrumental radio
astronomy carried out in India, USA and Brazil. The meeting
also inaugurates an award: the Govind Swarup medal, whose first
award is divided between two great drivers of Brazilian radio
astronomy: Hanumant Sawant and Pierre Kauffman.
With these initiatives, we are sure that we have held a precise
and necessary event that appreciates, in an appropriate way,
much more than science, but first of all, the people who carried
it out.
