Mega-volumising, kind-to-hair styling doesn’t happen naturally! It’s thanks to ghd’s SMART ultra-zone

styling, predicting hair's needs and adapting accordingly to maintain a constant, even heat from root to tip.

ghd's advanced infinity sensors monitor heat an incredible 250 times per second, guaranteeing you an optimal

THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY

GOVERNMENT

EXTENDS GRANT

SCHEME FOR

SOLE TRADERS

THE GOVERNMENT has opened up the

Enterprise Support Grant scheme for new

applications. The social protection minister,

Heather Humphreys TD, said the grant was

designed to help the self-employed to cover

the costs of returning to work following

Covid-19 shutdowns.

She added it would “be of interest” to

freelance and self-employed workers, which

includes hairdressers.

The Enterprise Support Grant was

originally designed to support new

entrepreneurs setting up their businesses, but

it has now been remodelled to help support

freelancers and the self-employed who were

forced to stop trading during lockdown as a

result of Covid-19.

It is designed to fill a support gap for very

small firms ineligible for other types of grants.

Funding of up to a maximum of €1,000 is

available for those who are eligible. To qualify

for the Enterprise Support Grant, sole traders

must employ less than 10 people and have an

annual turnover of less than €1 million.

Heather Humphries said: “Whether it’s

paying wages, fuel costs, purchasing PPE or

signage, this is an important grant to assist the

self-employed to reopen their businesses and

get back doing what they do best: providing

essential services in their communities.”

More details and application forms are

available on the gov.ie website.

PRESENTERS

REVEALED

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND is delighted to reveal the speakers taking to the

stage at Salon Smart Dublin on 2 November. Hosted in association with L’Oréal

Professionnel, the business networking event for salon owners and managers

will be a unique chance to come together to explore, discuss and share ideas.

The line-up includes Andrew Cannon, founder and chief executive of Ruffians

barber shops; Gina Conway, owner of Gina Conway Salons and Spas; Michelle

Grimes, owner and founder of Maven Hair; Gareth Bromell, founder of

HENSHIN by Gareth Bromell; David Campbell, chief executive of House of

Colour; Danielle Kennedy, managing director of The Collective by Lloyds;

and many more industry experts. Following the success of the first ever Salon

Smart Dublin last year, the event is returning to the Radisson Blu hotel to

provide unparalleled value and insight after a year of unprecedented events –

so there’s never been a better time to invest in your salon’s future.

For the itinerary and full speaker list, visit creativeheadmag.com/salonsmart

Face masks now mandatory

in all salons and barber shops

FACE COVERINGS ARE now to be worn in Ireland

in all retail settings, which includes hair salons.

The regulation came after an increase in confirmed

cases of Covid-19, and the government hopes that

this will help to prevent further spread of the virus.

Wearing face coverings in these settings is now

mandatory by law, meaning that all clients in your

salon or shop should be wearing masks as soon as

they enter the premises. This includes whether they

are waiting for their appointment to start, or during

services. As clients should be aware of this change in requirements, they can

arrive wearing their own face coverings.

Where possible, hairdressers should do as much work as possible with

clients wearing face coverings. However, if necessary they can be removed

temporarily to enable certain elements of hair services to be carried out.

THE BUSINESS EDIT

HOW CAN SALONS

SWERVE POST-

LOCKDOWN BURNOUT?

LIFE

LESSONS

WHEN IRISH SALONS were finally given

the green light to re-open in June, they were

given only a matter of days to plan for a new

way of working. Considerations included

social distancing measures, protective

equipment and rigorous cleaning schedules

to ensure visitors felt safe and comfortable.

A few months down the line and

hairdressers have worked harder than ever

before to provide great services under these

new conditions – but are they trying to do too

much? Keeping your team healthy and happy

is more important than ever to avoid the

dreaded post-lockdown burnout.

“We are now embracing a new environment

in our industry and working in what we are

learning is the ‘new normal’,” says Sarah

Mason, owner of Sarah Mason Professional in

Galway. “Although it’s a challenge it has been

highly rewarding greeting our clients back

while striving to keep on top of our game, and

I am really enjoying the positive side.”

Wearing face masks is currently mandatory

in retail settings in Ireland which, although

necessary for safety, is hot and uncomfortable

to wear during long hours in the salon.

However, Sarah says that the rule has

given her team a motivation to get outside

and switch off. “Wearing PPE has been a

challenge, however it is encouraging me

to get a little fresh air from time to time

during my day,” she explains. “We are now

embracing the outdoors more and the team

now swim in the sea after work in a place

called Blackrock in Salthill, Galway. Team

building is very important to me and this

is a super way to do a quick team-building

exercise that has brought us all a sense of

freedom and relaxation while washing away

our daily worries after a long day at work.”

Louisa Murphy, owner of Saints Colour

Specialist & Beauty in Ferns, Co. Wexford,

agrees that taking time out and getting fresh

air is essential to avoiding burnout. “I used to

expect the team to work as hard and as late

as I do, but spacing out client visits, having

fresh air and regular breaks from the PPE has

made everyone a lot happier,” she says. “We

put a seating area outside so clients can sit

there while waiting for their appointment, but

staff can also use it to have five minutes of air

and sunshine when they need. Staff also have

an extra 15 minutes on their lunch break to

be able to have time to go for a walk.”

Sarah has found that the time in lockdown

also allowed her to re-imagine her business,

so her staff could be both productive and

content on return. “I created a full team

induction, new salon policies and procedures

to strive for a successful new beginning,”

she explains. “I ensure my team has

optimal awareness covering health and safety

and the new running order of the salon to

minimise any anxiety they may have. With

health and safety at the top of my agenda

each day it has been vital for me, my team

and our client base to feel safe – so all of my

team have passed the Wella Professionals

Hygiene Course.”

She has also taken the opportunity to slow

down a little. “I have wanted to pare my own

column back to be able to focus more on each

client, so since lockdown I have put my plan

into action. Not only am I spending more

time with my clients I am now extending

their average spend, and my clients are

loving the extra attention to detail.”

And even little things can make all the

difference and keep staff feeling happy

and healthy. “We have a little hydration

competition to see who can drink the most

water in the day, and I bought a SodaStream

machine to make sparkling water,” says

Louisa. “On the whole, having more breaks

and more water and the extra time between

clients has made us all more motivated and

happy in work. We aren’t making quite as

much money per day as we used to, but

because we are extremely busy all of our time

slots are filled, so that outweighs the losses.”

ANDREW DUNNE

HAIR BY MANE

Be authentic. Success based on

other people’s interpretation of

you and your work is really an

empty experience. It will not lift

you up. In fact it will most likely

do the opposite.

What you focus on is what

grows. Make sure you

concentrate on what you want in

your life and not what you don’t.

It sounds simple, but it isn’t.

Experience wins every single

time. You can spend your whole

life analysing and learning

about how something is done,

but until you start to actually

do it you are just a spectator.

Behind the chair is where you

need to be!

Community is everything. Be

part of something bigger than

yourself, it allows you to pay

it forward and, most of all,

be connected to like-minded

people around you. It’s so

beneficial to you as a person

and also to your career.

Invest in yourself. Move quickly

and learn. By investing in

yourself you are betting on the

only person who really matters,

and when you bet on yourself

you tend to win. So go for it!

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER?

Funny enough I never actually wanted to be a hairdresser. I

started off modelling for Vanilla Hair Design and from there

I fell in love with the industry. From seeing such amazing

competition work on the IHF Championships floor to

watching how much power you have every day in the salon

by being able to make someone feel a million dollars when

they walk out the door, I knew I had to be a part of it.

WHAT ARE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR?

I really do have the trainee life! Back in

January I got to go to London and I

worked alongside Hooker & Young at a

photoshoot. It was an experience I never

thought I would get this early on in my

career. Not everyone gets to meet their

idols, but to say I was starstruck would

be an understatement! Meeting Olive

Tucker Lee, Katrina Kelly and Dylan

Bradshaw was also definitely next-level

emotion too.

LEAH CARROLL BYRNE

AGE: 18

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME?

I hope to have shared some of my hair skills with other cultures –

travelling with my trade is something I have wanted to do ever since

I started. I would like my name to be well-known in the competition

side of hairdressing and have my own trophies so I can show future

trainees that anything is possible if you have a dream and put the

work in.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG?

I am obsessed with products and haircare, so my dream would be to

get into educating with products – and from there to actually launch

my own range. I would love to be able to share my knowledge with

the youth of the hairdressing industry, while seeing my haircare

range on shelves all over the world.

All rise for the new tool from ghd that will

revolutionise how you style! If you love to

curl with ghd wands and tongs, you’ll love

this. If you simply adore the ghd glide for

its incredible smooth finish, then you’ll

really love this. The ghd rise takes all of

the best parts of its existing roster of tools

and refines them for 3D volume and an

incredibly shiny, soft-touch finish.

The 32mm barrel is studded with 5mm

nylon bristles that use the same SMART

technology as the ghd platinum+ to keep

the temperature at a constant 185˚C. It’s

these bristles that are the secret weapon

of the rise, according to ghd UK brand

ambassador Zoë Irwin. “The length is so

important – they’re not long enough to

tangle, but they are long enough to give

hold,” she explains. Just as with the glide,

Zoë considers the rise as a brush rather

than a tong, thanks to how easy it is to

use and its supreme versatility. It’s her

new favourite go-to on set, whether she’s

building body in the roots or using to curl

and smooth hair through the length. For

any clients who struggle to put a curl in

using straighteners or wands, give them

THE COLOUR CLINIC IS OPEN…

EVERY MONTH A WELLA PROFESSIONALS COLOUR EXPERT EXAMINES AN ISSUE WHICH AFFECTS THE WIDER INDUSTRY. WELLA PASSIONISTA

NELLA PASTORE RE-EXAMINES THE IDEA OF CHANGE AND WHY WE SHOULD BE EXCITED FOR WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT

“We all need to embrace change – both clients and as stylists. A lot of colourists think of

change as a big thing, that it means a client needs to have a total new look, but even the

smallest adjustment can make a huge difference for them. After lockdown I was expecting

clients to just have one long appointment as a one-off and then things go ‘back to normal’

again. But that hasn’t been the case. After just a couple of weeks I have clients asking for

something different, something interesting, because they don’t want their old ‘normal’.

“I try to introduce something small but different every time. Before lockdown I’d sort of

slipped out of the habit, it was easier to just run through everyone’s usual look. It was quicker,

it was easier – and the client was always happy. But since lockdown, I’ve been doing virtual consultations to

gauge what clients are dealing with, how their needs have changed, and I’m taking that extra time between

consultation and appointment to really think about what would suit them. Instead of seeing seven or eight

clients a day I’m now seeing only two or three, and really dedicating that time to clients.

“People are looking for change, you should embrace it. They’re not rushing as much as they used to, they

have the time to spend now so I’m doing longer, more dedicated services. I’m not going back down that road

of rushing through clients. When you work out your average spend with the amazing Wella Profit Calculator,

even with prices going up with PPE, I’m making so much more money and not breaking my back. And the hair

really shows – when you really take the time to use multiple techniques and products, they will really notice

the difference and they won’t mind the extra cost because it absolutely feels worth the money.”

Moving

on up

From new businesses

to established salons,

Treatwell’s innovative and

adaptable services form

the building blocks that can

make every hair venture

shine, no matter where you

are on your journey

A HELPING HAND is always appreciated. No matter what size your business is – whether

you’re a solo stylist or running a multi-salon empire – a solid foundation of business

know-how and support structures can help to keep your salon or business standing strong.

Treatwell knows that one size doesn’t fit all, that each and every client needs something

different. And that’s the beauty of its offering; you can customise your Treatwell support

experience, one building block at a time. We spoke to three different salons to discover

just how Treatwell has helped them to step up to the next level.

CREATIVE HEAD ADVERTORIAL

Four years ago, I realised

that if I didn’t go digital I

wouldn’t have a business

in four years’ time. The

year we made the move to

Treatwell our service sales

went up more than 30 per

cent. It was affordable for

me and moved us from

paper to online with ease.

Treatwell saves me time

which is invaluable because,

as a business owner, I don’t

have a lot of it!

Growth spurt

With fewer people out and about on the street, your online visibility is more important than ever. Your own website is an essential tool in this day

and age, but creating a digital shopfront on Treatwell, a site with more than seven million visitors every month, offers you next-level exposure.

Treatwell connects one of its partners to a client every 1.5 seconds.

Don’t know where to start with your own website? Treatwell has you covered there too, with a free website builder for clients to tailor to their

brand identity. Easy to use widgets and ‘book now’ buttons can also be added to existing sites as well as your business’ Facebook and Instagram.

Market yourself to the best of your ability and enjoy a wider network.

And let’s not forget the extra outreach that Treatwell does on your behalf to steer people to your salon. With smart email marketing initiatives,

based on tonnes of collected data and research as well as shareable, pre-designed images for you to use on social media, meeting your next new

client is just a click away.

@salon.rouge

Sliding doors

When demand is high, the last thing you want to deal with is the phone

ringing off the hook and constant interruptions. Maximise your online

availability and ensure potential clients can book an appointment

24/7. Manage all of your booking online through Treatwell’s clever

software for a smooth, hassle-free experience – for both you and the

client! Treatwell’s dedicated, easy-to-use booking software allows for

real-time availability display, to avoid any awkward double bookings.

You can also create simple ‘book now’ buttons on your Facebook

and Instagram pages, creating a community where likes become

bookings, which become happy clients. Take advantage of quiet days

and turn them into full columns with smart pricing options, including

off-peak and last-minute discounts which can be quickly and easily

adjusted with the touch of a button. Rather than moulding yourself to

fit the parameters of other booking systems, mould Treatwell’s many

options around you and your team.

Keep ‘em coming

Sure, your salon may be full now, but we all know that building lasting relationships is

crucial to a successful business. Walk-ins are discouraged due to Covid-19 guidelines,

so you need to do everything you can to lock-in secure client connections. The right

salon software means you’re able to spend the time where it matters: with your clients.

Treatwell can help you store all of your client notes, building up a GDPR-safe client

database that means you can offer next-level service. Every service, every concern,

every idea for future appointments can be noted down and take you one step closer

to the dream client experience. Automate all of your admin and cut-out no-shows for

a smoother way to run a salon. Treatwell offers you unlimited reminders for clients via

email and SMS without you having to lift a finger. Set automatic rebook reminders for

clients if you didn’t manage to book them in immediately after their service, to keep

everything on track and columns full.

The Treatwell client app means you can stay right there in your client’s pocket, with an

easy-to-book system and up-to-date availability for a seamless experience, whether it’s

their first visit or their fortieth. Want to offer a more personal touch? With professionally

designed marketing email templates, you can send messages to different groups of

clients with ease to encourage them to take advantage of specific deals or just to give

them a bit of a nudge.

I wasn’t very tech-savvy

when I opened my salons,

but being bookable online

has made sure my salons

are visible and my team

is trusted. Partnering with

Treatwell transformed my

business into something

far more interesting and

effective – particularly

when it came to adding my

second salon. It’s helped

me grow my business.

MAKE IT

personal

WHO WANTS TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE ANYWAY? THE NEW

FIBRE CLINIX RANGE FROM SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL

ALLOWS YOU TO BUILD A FULLY CUSTOMISABLE ROUTINE FOR

CLIENTS FOR A PERFECT FINISH, NO MATTER THE CONCERN

Demand for personalised services has grown exponentially, and the idea of

‘making do’ or ‘one size fits all’ feels a little redundant with all of the opportunities

now available at clients’ fingertips. Which is exactly why professional advice and

bespoke hair consultations are a crucial point of difference to offer clients with

restless fingers hovering over ‘buy now’ buttons on their phones.

Thankfully, Schwarzkopf Professional’s most advanced and powerful repair

technology offers the ability to tailor haircare to address multiple issues. The

breakthrough Fibre Clinix range takes a service-led approach to provide

customisable treatments and transformative results from first use. Hair is

both dry and damaged? No problem. Fine strands unable to cope with heavy

formulas for the colour treatments it’s gone under? Don’t sweat.

Ten years’ worth of hair bonding innovation and research has gone into the

Triple Bonding Technology that is at the core of the Fibre Clinix range. Combined

with C21 Technology, which works to repair the 21 lipid chains present in

hair and bring the cuticle closer to natural perfection, the results are instantly

noticeable. When used as a regime with the Tribond Shampoo and Treatments,

the technology restores the inner and outer hair structure for up to 60 days,* with

complete sealing of hair porosity.**

*When used with Fibre Clinix home care regime. **Wet combing test versus untreated hair.

Pleased to

meet you…

Nothing is quite the same after lockdown, and that includes the clients coming

through your doors. After months of isolation, they’ve had time to reflect on what they

want from their hairdressing services – so make sure you can spot The Connoisseur,

The Environmentalist, and The Experimentalist, and know what to offer them

Crown Hair and Beauty

The Connoisseur

Having been unable to get a proper haircut for more than

three months, clients have a new-found appreciation for

their hairdresser. Now that they are back in the chair, many

are happy to spend a little extra on a salon visit to be truly

pampered. “Hair has become one of the most appreciated

services after lockdown,” says Catherine Healy, owner of

Crown Hair and Beauty in Kilkenny. “Our clients love the

high end, luxurious feel of our salon and definitely want to

treat themselves.”

The Connoisseur wants a tailor-made experience and

they’re often happy to pay for bonding services and masks

to keep their premium colour healthy. “A truly luxurious

salon will offer one-on-one services and a spa-like feeling,

beautiful surroundings, premium products and no sense of

being rushed,” she explains. The little extras make all the

difference – a pampering head massage at the backwash

will take their experience to the next level, and a beautiful

bouncy blow-dry will make them feel like a million dollars.

The Connoisseur is also willing to pay for top-of-therange

retail products to take good care of the hair they have

invested heavily in – so make sure you’re ready to advise on

a package of goodies to take home. “During lockdown we

were available online to answer any questions clients had,

and we have continued to offer a convenient click and collect

service as well as our online shop,” adds Catherine. “People

really spent money on keeping their hair in good condition

during lockdown and want to continue doing so now.”

40

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

The Environmentalist

More than ever, clients are considering the impact that their

choices have on both them and the world around them. They

are aware that every euro they spend has a ripple effect, and

they want to know that they are investing their money in the

right places – and that includes the salon. “When we opened

in 2008, we did not plan to have an environmental ethos,”

explains John Hickey, operations director at The Greene

Room salons in Co. Clare and Co. Tipperary. “However we

became more environmentally focused – it has been a

learning curve for us as we navigate how to provide services

clients want while trading sustainably to make a profit.”

For The Environmentalist client, the right products are

highly important, as interest in ethical beauty services

is increasing. “In our experience, clients appear to have

been spending more mindfully since coming back after

lockdown. That interest begins with the expectation that, at

a minimum, product packaging is recyclable,” says John.

“Different people want different information. Take colour

services for example, clients need to understand that some

colour ranges may be natural but not necessarily vegan.”

To entice The Enivronmentalist, create unfussy spaces

that use upcycled materials and energy-saving alternatives –

such as biodegradable towels and eco-friendly shower

heads. Add some plants for a splash of greenery, and create a

feeling of sanctuary your clients will be happy to linger in.

The Greene Room

The Experimentalist

PREEN

After a dull few months stuck at home, The Experimentalist

has realised that they don’t want the same old hair again.

This client is open to trying something new, and wants

to take a beauty risk with a new look. They might now be

working from home rather than the office, so the style rules

have changed and there’s never been a better time to take

the plunge and go for that look they’ve always wanted.

“Coming out of lockdown has made some clients more

experimental – especially if they have more length to play

with – they are keen to try a new style,” says Katherine

Sweeney, owner of PREEN in Dublin. “One or two others

are now also taking the plunge to stop colouring their greys

and embracing their natural colour. Each of these clients

is unique, with their own set of challenges and individual

needs regarding their cut, colour and style.”

The Experimentalist wants something that is bespoke to

them, and has their mood brightened by coming into the

salon to try something new. “The majority of our clients have

really missed us and are just so happy to be back in the salon

again – it has given them a boost and cheered them up,”

adds Katherine. Keep on top of the latest trends from social

media and the runway to elevate The Experimentalist’s

style. Quick, temporary solutions such as clip-in hair

extensions and colour masks will fly off the shelves.

WE NEED TO TALK

ABOUT TEXTURE

CELEBRATING AND UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT HAIR TYPES IS CRUCIAL

FOR OUR INDUSTRY – SO START THE CONVERSATION TODAY

42

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

ghd

The Curly Look

Aidan Darcy

THE CONVERSATION ABOUT diversity has

never been more urgent, and every industry

has a part to play in the fi ght for equality –

including hairdressing, which for too long has

forgotten textured hair. Learn how to work with

all hair types and you’ll sharpen your skills,

open up new creative avenues and cement

your business as a place of expertise that can

welcome everybody.

“To understand how big this problem is we

need to have a deeper look at the historical

context of colonialism and its legacy on natural

hair,” says Sáulo O’Deoraín, founder of The

Curly Look in Dublin, a salon dedicated to

diff erent hair types. “The Eurocentric concept

of beauty has suppressed the chance of

natural hair being celebrated in all its forms.

We owe it to natural and curly women that they

be given the chance to love their hair texture

and, ultimately, understand and care for it in a

sustainable way.”

Cathy McNulty, owner of The Curl Artist in

Dublin, agrees that historically, hairdressing

education has forgotten these hair types,

and as a result many salons are unsure of

how to work with them. “I don’t think salons

make a decision not to work with curly and

textured hair so I don’t believe it is necessarily

deliberate discrimination – rather it comes down

to the down to a serious lack of education.

Training with natural hair takes dedication

and is a craft that is developed over time.”

According to research by Mintel in 2018,

black women in the US are now more likely

to wear their hair naturally than use chemical

relaxers, while 51 per cent of women

surveyed said that their natural hair made

them feel beautiful. Curls and coils are now

being embraced more than ever before, and

hairdressers should celebrate all hair textures,

for the sake of their clients and their community.

“Curly hair isn’t a trend. It’s about being authentic

and being true to an integral part of identity – the

movement is here to stay,” says Cathy.

Learning to work with curly hair will enable

you to welcome these clients into your

salon and help your business become an

inclusive destination – but it takes dedication.

“Understanding the culture of curly hair and its

complexity is needed,” says Sáulo. “Through

education, stylists should learn how to respond

to the natural landscape of texture present in

each head of curls. To improve their skills, I

would recommend that stylists practice The

Curly Girl Method designed by Lorraine Massey,

and we are soon releasing education for stylists

wanting to cater for natural and curly hair.”

Cathy agrees that having the right

knowledge is crucial to bringing out the best

in each unique texture. “When working with

curly and textured hair it is about the approach

and respecting the hair in its natural form,” she

explains. “Consider the movement, texture,

shape and sculpting of each individual curl

so it sits in harmony with the rest. Achieving a

particular style in one salon visit may not

be possible, so it is more about working

toward a goal to release the curls’ potential.

The hair may have been subjected to years

of heat damage of suppressing curls into a

specifi c style and to reverse that takes time

and commitment.”

And these skills are also crucial if you have

ambitions of working in the fast-moving world

of session styling, at fashion shows and on

shoots. “It’s very important to be able to work

with different hair textures because backstage

at fashion week we get such an international

mix of models with all different hair textures,”

says freelance session stylist Aidan Darcy, who

has worked at fashion weeks across the globe

for brands including Valentino, Dior and Celine.

“My own skills working with textured hair is

still growing,” he continues. “It’s not something

that I was familiar with before doing shows at

fashion weeks but through a lot of learning

from both the hairstylist that I am assisting and

friends that I have made, I now have a good

bit of knowledge. If you think you are above

education, or that you already know everything

then you are wrong, because we can never

know everything in our industry – it’s so

important to keep upskilling.”
