Highlights Julie Blyfield Mentorship JamFactory’s Medici Program supported a 5-month mentorship for JamFactory’s Jewellery and Metal Studio Associates with renowned South Australian Jeweller, Julie Blyfield. The workshops held once a month allowed each Associate the ability to expand their creative practice through drawing and mixed media model making activities using materials other than metal, before finally looking at how these works can be interpreted by the body. Blyfield provided an indispensable wealth of knowledge and creative feedback, as well as professional development advice for grant writing and residency submissions. Photo courtesy of JamFactory. Myriam Mechita Residency Internationally acclaimed French contemporary artist Myriam Mechita undertook a residence in JamFactory’s Ceramics and Glass Studios to develop new work. Mechita lives and works in Berlin and Paris and works across painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and embroidery. Her exhibition, Roses don’t have hearts, but my eyes will find yours was shown at GAG Projects, Adelaide in September. Miriam’s residency was supported through the French Embassy in Australia. Think Like A Creative Director With Lou Weis JamFactory’s Associates were fortunate to spend 3 days in the company of Lou Weis, the creative force behind design studio, Broached Commissions. Lou conducted a comprehensive hands on workshop that pushed each Associate to think like a creative director, with a focus on building a business, articulating and defining a brand identity and how to affectively project and market their craft. Matt Potter Wins Vivid Award First year Furniture Studio Associate Matt Potter was the recent winner of the 2017 VIVID Design Colour Award with his ceramic pendant, Habere Light. Habere draws inspiration in equal parts from both organic form and the digitally engineered. Matt started with the exploration of a conceptual theme and employed process-driven research to create Habere. Photographer: Zen Pang. JamFactory Lifetime Honouree Dick Richards At an exclusive Members’ preview event of JamFactory Icon 2017 Catherine Truman: no surface holds, Dick Richards was recognised as JamFactory’s first ever Lifetime Honouree. Dick was instrumental in JamFactory’s early years undertaking a fact-finding mission, initiated by Don Dunstan, across Europe to build the case for its establishment. He then served on JamFactory’s Board for the first decade. Dick was also an avid advocator for the arts in South Australia with an outstanding 35-year career at the Art Gallery of South Australia, until his retirement in 2000. Photo courtesy of JamFactory. Festival Fit It’s been all hands on deck after a substantial grant was received from Arts South Australia for JamFactory’s Furniture Studio to design and produce the furniture for the foyer of the Adelaide Festival Centre redevelopment. Under the artistic leadership of the Creative Director of JamFactory’s Furniture Studio Jon Goulder, JamFactory’s Associates have been commissioned to produce 33 bench seats, 10 bespoke armchairs (designed by Jon Goulder, pictured left), and a series of bar, side and coffee tables amongst other pieces.
