THE NATIONAL Party
candidate gunning for the
Christchurch East seat says the
approach needs to change if
shovel-ready projects in New
Brighton are to be completed on
time.
Central
government
has approved
$7 million to
help complete
nine projects
across New
Brighton.
Lincoln Platt
says if he’s
voted in, he will push for these
projects to be done with the least
bureaucracy possible.
But incumbent Christchurch
East Labour MP Poto
Williams says the current
approach to these projects is
effective and some of them are
already under way. She hopes
they are on track for completion
next year.
Platt said these projects will
benefi the community but
projects in New Brighton have
taken longer than anticipated in
the past.
Lincoln Platt
He said he would ensure these
community groups have direct
communication with central
government so these projects
are completed as quickly as
possible.
Houdini the turtle
• By Bea Gooding
HOUDINI IS one turtle who
is living up to his name.
The six-year-old is a natural-born
escape artist, so his
latest disappearing act came
as no surprise to his owners
when he vanished from
home for several months.
But the 10-month mystery
finally came to an end last
week when photos of the
missing turtle surfaced on
the Bishopdale Community
Group.
Owner Christina Gane
was shocked to come across
the Facebook post as she was
not expecting to reunite with
him again, especially since
she posted about his escape
last November.
Houdini’s sunbathing
privileges were now revoked,
she said, after he flipped over
the paddling pool he was
in shortly before his daring
escape last year.
“I was quite shocked, I
couldn’t believe it. We’d given
up hope after 10 months,”
said Gane.
“Turtles are a lot faster
than you think.”
A small scar on the back of
his leg and his unique turtle
shell prints confirmed his
identity, she said.
Gane presumed Houdini
had spent the last few
months in hibernation
before he “decided to come
out again,” and was spotted
walking across the road just
metres from her neighbour’s
house.
The “cheeky” red-eared
slider was a known escape
artist with a mind of his
own and was “smarter” than
initially perceived.
Her children’s grandmother
adopted him when
he was a hatchling six years
ago, escaping the pond for
weeks at a time or would
find comfort hiding under
the bed.
The Bower in North New
Mauger, the Burwood Ward
Coastal Ward councillor Daniels
Mauger’s actions.
The city council is investigating,
Parking warden earns
city more than $200k
• By Matt Slaughter
NEW MUFTI police vehicles will
be used to catch unsuspecting
speeding drivers in Canterbury.
It comes as police have announced
a nationwide zero tolerance
to speeding.
All motorists exceeding the
speed limit even slightly may now
be stopped and fined.
Canterbury police have added
three unmarked Holden Equinoxes
to their fleet of vehicles in a
nationwide crackdown on motorists
going too fast.
The district’s road policing manager
Inspector Greg Cottam said
these vehicles will be on Canterbury
roads from next week.
It is part of a month-long focus
on catching speeding drivers, said
Cottam.
As well as the unmarked cars,
the number of police using radar
and laser speed detection devices
in all parts of Canterbury will
increase.
Cottam said making sure
people are obeying speed limits
around roadworks will be a key
priority.
The clampdown is happening
in spring because better weather
often sees increased numbers
SLOW DOWN: Police
will be using unmarked
Holden Equinoxes and an
increased number of laser
speed detection devices
in a month-long focus on
catching speeding drivers.
of motorists on roads and more
crashes, particularly involving
motor-cyclists.
“I can tell you that the likes
Dyers Pass Rd, the Port Hills
[and] the Christchurch to Akaroa
highway do see an increase in
the number of crashes, including
motorcycles.
“With motor-cycles, unfortunately,
they’re parked up in the
garage because it’s cold and wet.
“They come out, their riding
skills have got a little bit dusty
over the winter, so they just need
to get used to them again and
wear the hi-vis gear and make
sure they’re seen,” he said.
CHRISTCHURCH’S most
prolific parking warden has
dished out more than $200,000 in
tickets over the past three years.
Referred to only as Officer C
by the city council, his A-plus
performance
has seen him
issue 17,777
tickets from
2017 to the
start of this
year, raking
Steffan
Thomas
in a total of
$206,096 in
revenue for the
city council.
Last year he issued 3.1 tickets
an hour on average. He has been
a parking warden for seven years.
While Officer C may be a high
flyer among parking wardens in
Christchurch, he pales compared
to Auckland’s most prolific
warden.
In spite of being in the role
for just over a year, he managed
to earn the Auckland Council
$744,644 in the 13 months
leading up to April, issuing
14,250 tickets.
Auckland Council issued
an average of about 30,000 tickets
a month, about 330,000 across
the entire 13 month period.
The Auckland officer handed
out 5000 more tickets than his
closest competitor in the super
city.
Statistics released to The Star
show the city council issued
78,811 in 2019, 82,118 in 2018 and
71,268 in 2017.
This resulted in the city
council collecting $4,310,637
last year, $4,774,817 in 2018 and
$4,365,445 in 2017.
TICKETED: The city council
collected $4,310,637 in
parking fines last year.
A city council spokeswoman
said it was important to note that
revenue gathering was not the
goal for the parking enforcement
team.
“The key reasons for parking
control is to ensure that vehicles
have safe access to the places where
the occupants need to go, and that
the availability of parking is equitable
for all drivers,” she said.
City council manager of transport
operations Steffan Thomas
added the council did not offer
any bonuses or incentivise officers
to write a higher number of
infringement notices.
“Officer performance is based on
beat coverage, responding to high
priority complaints and quality of
evidence to support infringement
notices,” he said.
efforts staff have made to ensure
football can be played this year,”
the Facebook post read.
Mainland Football chief executive
Julian Bowden reinforced
that message when justifying
why supporters were barred
despite level two restrictions allowing
crowds of up to 100.
“English Park is an interesting
facility. We have four changing
rooms and we often have backto-back
games here. Once you’ve
got four teams in there with 20
people each that’s about 80 so
letting supporters in is highly
challenging,” Bowden said.
“We made a call quite early on
that we would continue to run
games here but people would
need to stay outside the perimeter
of the ground.
“That was communicated extensively
through the clubs and social
media but you still get people that
don’t pick that up, and turn up
and they’re disappointed.
“I get they’re disappointed but
I think people need to be reasonable.
Screaming at staff doesn’t do
a whole lot for me,” Bowden said.
Mosque victim reopens business
• By Louis Day
AFTER SPEAKING his mind to
the March 15 terrorist, survivor
Wasseim Alsati is turning to a
new chapter in his life.
He has reopened his mobile
barbershop, Wass’ Barbers on
Victoria St, for the first time since
the shootings.
Alsati and his 4-year-old
daughter both suffered multiple
gunshot wounds during the attacks.
He said he had returned to
work, in spite of the lasting physical
and mental pain from the
shootings, as he was falling into a
desperate financial position.
“One of the reasons I reopened
my business is because of my
finances. I am very desperate,”
he said.
“There is still so much pain,
even when I’m working, but my
biggest rehabilitation is to see my
friends and my clients as I try to
forget what happened.
“I would really love the support
from the New Zealand people
and Christchurch community
to help me get over what has
happened, not only in a financial
way, but also in a mental way to
keep myself busy and begin to
live a normal life again.”
The barber of 20 years was one
of many impacted by the March
15 attacks given the opportunity
to face the gunman during his
sentencing.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
NEW CHAPTER: Wasseim Alsati outside his mobile barbershop on Victoria St. He confronted the March 15 gunman at
the sentencing last week. The shooting left him and his four-year-old daughter with multiple wounds.
Alsati opened his address to
the gunman by saying “good
afternoon to everyone except
you,” which resulted in a ripple
of laughter throughout the
courtroom and a smile forming
across the face of the gunman.
“Thankfully, [I have] survived
because he don’t know how to use
a gun,” he added.
Alsati told The Star he could
see the fear in the gunman’s eyes
when he faced him.
“I saw how weak he is, he tried
to look strong but he was completely
shaking at times while trying
to laugh and show no mercy
and regret. But he was
very worried and you could tell
by the tone of his voice and the
fact that he decided not to make a
speech.”
The gunman was sentenced to
life in prison without the possibility
of parole. He had admitted
51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted
murder and one charge
of terrorism.
Justice Cameron Mander
imposed the sentence last week
– the harshest available to the
court.
Documents released from
Cabinet last month showed locking
up the gunman would cost
taxpayers $3.6 million over two
years, averaging $4932 a day.
Calls have been for the Australian
citizen to be sent back across
the Tasman or for Australia to
foot the bill for his incarceration.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern
said she would first talk to the
victims and their families before
deciding whether the gunman
should be sent back to his home
country or continue to be held in
New Zealand.

Warriors fan, club reach out
to March 15 victim’s son
• By Heath Moore
AN AUSTRALIAN-based
Warriors fan is rallying to help
Ahad Nabi have something to
look forward to.
Nabi, the son of Haji
Mohemmed Daoud Nabi who
was shot dead at Al Noor
Mosque on March 15 last year,
wore a Warriors jersey while
delivering his victim impact
statement in the High Court last
week.
Fan Dylan Larkins has since
set up a GoFundMe page with
the goal of raising $1000 to put
towards purchasing merchandise
and/or a rolling membership
for Nabi.
“The whole Covid situation
made me take a look at myself
and think what can I do for
other people?” Larkins said.
“It doesn’t have to be big.
So when I was watching Ahad
in court pour his heart out I
thought what can I do that’s
more personal than just sending
some money off? I saw him in
his Warriors jersey and thought
I wonder if we could get him
a membership or something
to enjoy coming up . . . I just
wanted something for him to
look forward to after a traumatic
couple of years.
“Everyone can make a change.
I thought bugger it, I’ll set it up.”
The page has already raised
$300.
Larkins said his original plan
was to put the money towards a
2-4 year rolling Warriors membership
for Nabi.
“I want something ongoing for
him,” he said. “If he declines but
has another cause to help out we
could go with that but initially,
I’d love to get him a membership
or a merchandise package or
7.1 quake
September 4, 2010 - a decade on
GOOD AS NEW: Owner Simonetta Ferrari stands in front of the repaired Gunyah Country Estate . PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
• By Devon Bolger
ALMOST 10 years ago to the day,
Simonetta Ferrari could have died.
An eight-tonne chimney came
crashing through her ceiling,
smashing on to the bed she was
sleeping in – caused by the 7.1
magnitude quake that devastated
parts of Canterbury.
“It missed me by less than a
metre, hitting the end of the bed.
It was very close,” she recalls.
“Afterwards, I couldn’t get
out of the room, the door was
jammed. Plaster and bricks were
flying around us. I remember
having a mouthful of plaster as I
was trying to get out.”
Ferrari is the owner of the
Gunyah Country Estate, near
Glenroy, and was in bed with her
husband at the time, William
Cottrell.
Cottrell snapped an Achilles
tendon as he was trying to escape
from the bed, and was struck by
a brick.
Said Cottrell: “I had walked past
the front of bed and the chimney
came down behind me, I’d just
about got to the door of the bedroom
and the roof came down.
“I was up to my knees in brick
and then the back of one leg got
smashed.”
Cottrell said if he had not got
out of bed as quickly as he did, he
would have been killed.
When asked how lucky she felt
to be alive, Ferrari said she did not
even think about it at the time.
“You are in such an adrenaline
type mode to be able to deal with
what’s happening.
“It took a long time and it’s only
looking at the photos months after
that suddenly you think oh gosh
REPAIRED: Gunyah Country Estate’s main dining room after the earthquake, and as it
looks now.
LUCKY: William Cottrell, in 2010, in his bedroom where he
was sleeping when the quake struck.
there was a chance I may not have
been here anymore.”
The two-poster antique bed
was completely destroyed by the
weight of the chimney.
All four of the estate’s brick
chimneys collapsed during the
quake.
“I do think about it still now,
I’ll never forget it. It has affected
my life and it is quite hard to talk
about sometimes.”
Ferrari was considerably lucky
compared to a man in his 50s
who suffered serious injuries
when a chimney fell on his taxi in
Manchester St, Christchurch.
In the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, falling bricks and
masonry killed 11 people in
Christchurch.
Ferrari said she can remember
the confusion when the earthquake
first struck.
“I’ve never been in an earthquake
before so I had no idea
that’s what it was. My brain
thought oh there is a lot of noise
and I was being shunted back
FAST FACTS
• The magnitude 7.1
earthquake was the largest
earthquake to affect a
major urban area since
the 1931 Hawke’s Bay
earthquake.
It was a relatively shallow
earthquake – about 10km
below the surface of the
Canterbury Plains. During
the strong shaking, the
ground near the epicentre
moved at up to 1.25 times
the acceleration due to
gravity.
The earthquake was
accompanied by a large
surface rupture.
• The quake was the first
in New Zealand in which
social media were used to
share information.
GeoNet earthquake reports
were sent out using both
Twitter and Facebook after
each major aftershock.
• The worst damage was
suffered by older (mainly
pre-1940s) buildings
constructed of brick and
masonry, and lacking
adequate reinforcement.
Some walls crumbled, with
bricks cascading onto the
streets. Brick chimneys
toppled through tile roofs.
A fault rupture occurred
along a previously unknown
fault line, which was named
the Greendale Fault.
Movement along the fault
broke the surface, creating
a fault trace extending for
30km west from Rolleston.
BROKEN: Holes in the roof of Gunyah Estate where brick
chimneys used to stand.
and forth on the bed.
“I remember thinking what is
it? It can’t be an earthquake, and
then I thought oh s**t it is an
earthquake.”
Gunyah was partially back up
and running in a few months.
Repairs on the building were
finished two years after the quake.

Mayor
Lianne Dalziel
MESS: Marilyn Platt standing in liquefaction outside her Bexley home.
Marilyn still has soft
spot for fractured land
Bexley’s Pacific Park
was devastated in
the 2010 quake,
liquefaction causing
irreparable damage
to the relatively new
subdivision. Chris
Barclay reports
MARILYN PRATT still
occasionally wanders down
memory lane, what was
Seabreeze Close in Bexley’s
doomed and now dormant
Pacific Park.
One of the most distressing
moments of the grandmother’s
life took place inside No. 29 in
the early hours of September 4,
2010, though she still has a soft
spot for the fractured land that
once housed her “forever home.”
“It was my home for retirement.
I was there for five years
and I still miss it.
“It was a lovely setting and it
was a really good neighbourhood.
We’d all go out for a meal
every six weeks to the Woolston
Club . . . little things like that,
you don’t normally get,” Pratt
said.
Now secure in the Prestons
Park development in Marshland,
with her daughter Vanessa
and granddaughter Lucy, Pratt
sometimes meanders around
the swampland subdivision now
reclaimed by wildlife.
Her neighbours dispersed far
and wide, including the bloke
who checked on the family soon
after the quake struck in the
pitch black.
“He banged on the door and
warned us about the liquefaction.
He said don’t come past the
step,” Pratt recalled.
“I see the odd one (neighbour)
from time to time but he’s absolutely
disappeared, we
don’t know what’s happened to
him.”
Pratt never spent another
night in Seabreeze Close as the
trio moved from friends, to a
motel, to Parklands and then
Kaiapoi, where they lived for
about eight years.
“We bought house in
AFFECTED: Vanessa and Lucy Callaghan, and Marilyn Pratt
with dog Humphrey.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Queenspark, we’d only been in
that a few weeks and then the
next earthquake hit,” she said.
“We had to live in it for the
year. Lucy calls it the ‘broken
house’, she can just remember
the broken house where the rain
came in.
“There was a drip over the
dining room table. We had to
go right through that winter, we
didn’t have a toilet or power for a
long time.
“By the time we went through
all the insurance and the government
stuff, all the paperwork
stuff was horrendous. I’d never
have got through it all without
Vanessa.
“When we went to sign up for
our house at Kaiapoi we actually
went three times. They’d change
the policy the night before or the
day before. It was terrible,” she
said.
While Pratt has come to terms
with the financial implications
of her move to Pacific Park,
Lucy, now aged 10, is still affected
by the earthquakes and
aftershocks.
“She’s got quite a lot of anxiety
with noise. If we’re at a mall or
somewhere and you go into a
toilet and somebody turns the
hand dryer on she put her hands
over her ears or she has to get
out.”
Fortunately gymnastics has
proved therapeutic.
“That’s her life, she trains four
hours at a time (in Aranui) so we
moved from Kaiapoi to closer to
town,” Pratt said.
“We’ve relocated lots,
hopefully we’re stable this time.”
Lured into a false
sense of security
IT’S HARD to believe that 10
years have passed since we were
shaken from our sleep at 4.35am
by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake.
I will never forget how I felt
or the sense of foreboding about
what daylight would bring.
But in spite of the significant
shaking damage and the extraordinary
amount of liquefaction,
we avoided the fatalities
that such a large earthquake so
close to a city could be expected
to cause.
Although we can be grateful
that no one died, to this day, I
believe this created a false sense
of security. Steps that could have
made our city much more secure
before February 22, 2011, were
not taken, and lives were lost
and people seriously injured as
a result.
What this has taught me is the
importance of learning lessons
from our experiences, which
means we need to be open to
discuss the mistakes as well as
the things we got right.
I also think it’s important to
remember that the focus after
the September earthquake was
on reinstating the damaged land
in the east, so it could be rebuilt
on.
It was the February 22, 2011,
earthquake that put paid to
those proposals.
I always return to Bexley on
September 4, which is where
I was living at the time. I still
feel an emotional connection
with the place. We chose Bexley,
because of its location – we
thought it was the city’s best kept
secret.
And now it’s part of what
will be the lasting legacy of the
earthquake sequence that began
a decade ago, the Ōtākaro Avon
River Corridor, an extraordinary
gift connecting the city to the
sea.
Saying farewell to a champion
of this legacy, Evan Smith, on
this special anniversary is
particularly poignant, and I will
always remember him on this
day, along with the home I had
to leave behind.
EXTRAORDINARY: Bexley was hit hard by liquefaction.
Restored home’s missing link –
partner killed in tragic car crash
• By Chris Barclay
THE CENTURY-OLD twostorey
weatherboard home
has been restored to Kenneth
McCaul’s exact specifications,
though one vital element will
always be missing.
Owen Fraser happily details
how the Kaiapoi property was
refurbished after the quake
though a decade later the project
is also tinged with sadness.
McCaul, Fraser’s husband –
and partner of 40 years – was the
inspiration behind a painstaking
process, yet never saw it reach
fruition.
The Australian was killed
when the car he was driving
was t-boned by a vehicle being
pursued by police in Fendalton
early on October 22 last
year, as he headed to work at
Christchurch Hospital.
Jayden Richard Breakwell,
then aged 18, was jailed for two
years and eight months last
December for manslaughter and
reckless driving causing injury.
“I’ve just painted the inside of
all the window frames upstairs,”
Fraser explains before he revisits
the September, 2010 earthquake.
All three chimneys collapsed,
one into the bedroom the couple
had shared until shortly before
the earthquake.
“If we’d been in that bedroom
we would have been killed because
the chimney landed on the bed.
“We decided to move to the
front bedroom a month before,
we must have got a signal from
INSPIRATION: Owen Fraser and dog Miss Scarlett outside
his Kaiapoi home. (Inset) Fraser and his late husband
somebody,” he said.
Although aftershocks were a
regular reminder of the dramatic
night, Fraser said they never contemplated
leaving Kaiapoi, where
they lived since February, 2010
after returning from Australia.
“We looked everywhere for a
house we liked, we saw this one
and visualised what we could do
with it,” Fraser said.
“The last people that had it tried
to modernise it, which didn’t really
help the house. We’ve sort of taken
it back to more to the style that it
should be.
“Kenneth came up with some
really good ideas. There are new
drapes in the living area. We were
choosing those when Kenneth
was killed, I’ve done that since he’s
gone. There’s other things he was
going to do which I’ve done.”
The majority of the reconstruction
work on the house built in
1904 was completed in two years,
an operation that started soon
after the shakes subsided.
“We got in really early because
we knew there would be a shortage
of scaffolding and all that
sort of thing,” Fraser said.
“We actually put the scaffolding
up before we heard from the insurance
company. We rung them and
said ‘‘you better hurry up and sort
7.1 quake
September 4, 2010 - a decade on
SMASHED: A chimney crashed into the bedroom that
Fraser and McCaul had shared shortly before the quake.
things out because we’ve already
got the scaffolding up’.”
Fraser added he was impressed
at how Kaiapoi had recovered in
the aftermath of the 7.1 magnitude
quake.
“It’s recovering a lot quicker
than Christchurch. We lost
about a third of the town to the
red zone. A lot of houses were
pulled down but it’s expanded
since then.
“I’m pretty sure our recovery
is going a lot quicker than
Christchurch.
“One of the things they really
should have got stuck into sooner
was the cathedral. That’s really
pulling things down with that
sitting there.”
Meanwhile, Fraser is bracing
to reflect on another poignant
date on the calendar as the first
anniversary of McCaul’s death
approaches.
“I miss him heaps. Kenneth
loved it here, he loved New
Zealand.”
Defiant locals gathered at broken bar
• By Chris Barclay
THE VALLEY Inn regulars
reacted to the September 2010
earthquake with a show of
defiance that left an insurance
assessor dismayed, and publican
Dean Calvert unfazed.
Hours after ‘Tour of Duty’
played in the long-standing
Heathcote bar, the locals
soldiered on, with one final
session in the severely damaged
triangular-shaped watering hole.
Calvert was on the scene
shortly after the quake struck at
4.35am and by daybreak locals
had already assembled amid the
wreckage.
“We were sitting around the
well having a beer, the whole
time locals were coming and
going, it was strange times,”
Calvert remembered.
“The insurance guy came
down and goes ‘What are you
doing? You need these people out
of here’.
“I told him they’re having
their last beer in the pub. This is
part of their lounge for all these
people. We’re not going to be
reopening are we?”
But Calvert, who took over the
lease the day his parents George
and Janet bought the building in
2004, pessimism was eventually
misplaced.
The family never wavered
about building a new Valley
Inn, and had the February 22,
2011, earthquake not intervened
Calvert says they could have
RESILIENT: Owner Dean Calvert in front of the rebuilt Valley
Inn. Right: The damage caused by the September 4, 2010,
earthquake.
reopened a year to the day the
original “fell over”.
“We would have been on top
of it but we had to recheck the
ground (after February).
“We didn’t start building until
May but the local tradies all offered
to work. It was all hands on
deck just to get the pub back.”
Then mayor of Christchurch
Bob Parker reopened the bar
23 days after the quake’s first
anniversary, with the brick-lined
well the only remnants from the
original built in 1877.
While the Valley Inn was
quickly re-established, Calvert
laments the same cannot be said
for the central city.
“I don’t know how it’s taken
so long. You look at Japan when
they had that tsunami and earthquake,”
he said.
“They were probably rebuilt in
two or three years at the most.
And we’re still arguing with
bloody politics and bits and
pieces.
7.1 quake
September 4, 2010 - a decade on
“Everyone’s p****d around too
much organising stuff which
they can’t organise.
“We were lucky. The earthquake
happened on the 4th of
September and the bulldozer
went through on the 10th.
“We were lucky we got on to it
so quickly. Looking at some of
the sites around town it’s a bit of
shame that people haven’t organised
things a bit better.”
Calvert received the permit to
rebuild the day before the February
22, 2011, earthquake and
never had any second thoughts
in the following days.
“It was like a meeting place for
the locals, it needed to be rebuilt.
The local church did a BYO pub
on Fridays for a while. They
knew the Valley was a meeting
place for Heathcote.
“Everyone used to go there and
talk to their mates, some had
been there 50 years.”
‘God knows how she got out’
• By Devon Bolger
DAVE FITZJOHN and his
family were almost as close as
you can get to the epicentre of
the earthquake.
Their property in Greendale is
near to Charing Cross where experts
say the quake was centered.
“You feel like you’re on a fast
train that’s gone completely out
of control, the whole house was
rattling,” said
Fitzjohn.
“One thing
I really remember
was
I woke up
and said:
‘Earthquake,’
Dave Fitzjohn
and my wife
just turned to
me and said:
‘Yes.’ It was one of those stupid
married conversations.”
It was impossible to move at
all, Fitzjohn said, but his wife
April did not realise this and
ended up being thrown into a
cupboard.
It was a wardrobe type cupboard,
she was trying to get to
their teenage daughter Jessie.
“She hardly remembered being
thrown into it but the cupboard
door was completely munted.
“With her shoulder being
black and bruised and the door
MESS: The Fitzjohn’s kitchen floor after the quake caused
their cupboards to empty.
pushed in, it all sort of came
back. I think it was all that
adrenaline at the time.”
Fitzjohn said once it was safe
enough, he moved down to Jessie’s
room.
“She was quite amusing in a
way because when I got to the
room she was shouting am I
supposed to be under the bed or
standing under a doorway?”
To this day, the Fitzjohn’s
cannot figure out how Jessie
managed to find her way out of
her bedroom.
“Her room was completely
full of stuff, she must have
climbed up and over it and
somehow pulled the door open
enough and got down into the
passageway.
“That night
we could not
actually get
her back into
her bedroom.
We couldn’t
open the door.
God knows
April Fitzjohn how she got
out, it must
have just been adrenaline.”
Once things calmed down, the
family went outside and stood in
the garden.
“As it got lighter we saw more
bits of the house that were
missing. Jessie said hang on the
chimney is not there.
“Then, we had a huge water
tank, it was like oh the water
tank’s gone. It was quite freaky.”
Fitzjohn said they were told
the house had moved between
10-30cm off its foundations.
The family had also just got a
new puppy which was sleeping
in a crate in their study at the
time of the quake.
“The study was completely full
of books that had come down,
draws and all sorts. It probably
took about 15 minutes to extricate
this puppy.
“It’s lucky he was in a crate, I
can’t imagine if he had just been
lying there. It came out wagging
its tail as if it was just a cool game.”
near Darfield. Four metres
of sideways movement
has been measured
• The quake lasted up to
40sec and occurred as a
Fourteen days in quarantine:
Bearable when rugby is on TV
The Star
journalist
Chris
Barclay
recently
returned
from
Sydney to his home
town of Christchurch,
though not before
completing a 14-day
managed isolation
requirement in
Hamilton, a stopover
that proved surprisingly
bearable once he
confirmed his room
had Sky Sport
RELIEF TURNED to
resignation soon after NZ104
touched down, to herald a
homecoming of sorts for 50
expat Kiwis biding time for 336
hours to join the team of five
million.
The passengers were aware
their evacuation from Australia
was not necessarily going to end
in Auckland, with Hamilton, Rotorua,
Wellington and Christchurch
also potential destinations
for managed isolation.
So when the police officer
boarded the aircraft all hope was
lost for this Cantabrian when,
after a perfunctory welcome, he
informed us we will be boarding
a bus … to Hamilton.
At least the six passengers in
premium economy could mask
their initial disappointment –
face coverings were pretty much
mandatory once we arrived at a
near-deserted Sydney Airport
five hours earlier.
Once we boarded one of two
buses, however, and headed out
of Manukau, one woman was
bold enough to articulate what
most of us were thinking: “At
least I’m not spending three
grand to stay in Hamilton.”
The cost of managed isolation
for returning New Zealanders
had been a sore point for some
taxpayers, so much so Waikato
DHB staff at the Distinction
Hamilton Hotel and Conference
Centre recommended we not
publicise our 14-day internment.
Therefore if you’re reading this
aghast, remember your prime
ministers’ words – “be kind.”
Mobile phones pinged with
sympathetic texts after a passenger
discovered we were headed to
the Distinction, apparently the
only quarantine facility under
army control at that stage.
Security at the complex in
Te Rapa had been tightened
after two breaches – a man cut
through a perimeter fence to
slake his thirst at a local bottle
shop in early July.
A couple of weeks later a
family-of-five broke out of the
property after returning from
Brisbane to attend a funeral.
We arrived in darkness and
a member from then Tainui
lightened the mood with mihi
whakatau and karakia.
“We’re here to help you
through the 14 days. We’ve got a
lot of activities that we do after
your day three swabs. We’re also
here to help with any wellness or
welfare issues that you may need
support for. Kapai?”
Once those pleasantries were
complete we were funnelled to
a reception area where – spaced
2m apart – we swept up a chocolate
fish, peanut slab and can
of Fresh Up before the first of
several health assessments.
The interrogation covered the
same questions posed before our
passports were checked broadly:
“Have you come into contact
with anyone who has tested positive
to Covid-19? Are you feeling
sick? Are you on medication?
Do you have any mental health
issues?”
My responses were short,
sweet and repetitive. I had only
one inquiry: “Do you have Sky
Sport?” though there might be
other questions you are curious
about.
• How was the food?
The Distinction’s catering crew
ensured that of all the ailments
Waikato DHB staff were nervous
about, starvation wasn’t among
them. Three meals a day plus
snacks. Breakfast was a set
menu, with warm options on
five of seven days. There was an
element of pot luck with lunch
and dinner – they had to be
selected for the 14 days on first
your night. Options included
grilled salmon, pork redang,
butter chicken, fajitas and lamb
shank.
• Can you get booze and
smokes?
Beer and wine could be purchased
in moderation. The cider
and beer was $4 a pop, wine was
$25 a bottle across a range including
pinot gris and rose bubbles. A
pack of $20 equals $40. You could
order food and essential items –
but no alcoholic beverages – from
the local supermarket.
•How was the room?
Fortunately spacious enough
to pace up and down when it
was too wet to stretch outside.
No room cleaning service but
ISOLATION: Security was tight at Hamilton’s Distinction
Hotel and Conference Centre. Eggs Benedict was on the
menu for breakfast, it was delicious. The staff you never met
gave a fond farewell.
you could change the linen every
three days if you wanted to make
the bed. Two laundry bags (10
items per bag) gratis then $40
per load.
• How dull was it?
Set meal times, the daily health
check, the Government’s 1pm
press conference after the Auckland
outbreak and a window to
do laps of the car park meant the
day was quite regimented and
time passed relatively quickly
for me. An acquaintance under
quarantine in Auckland didn’t
quite agree, messaging this sarcastic
response when asked how
her day nine was going: “Went to
the beach, had an ice cream, got
my nails done and had a drink
with the girls. You know … same
old, same old. Yours?”
• What measures are
taken to treat cabin fever?
Returnees are given an
84-page managed isolation
information dossier. Pages 31 to
66 are devoted to looking after
your well-being during isolation.
Contact details are included for
Lifeline, Depression Helpline,
Youthline and the Suicide Crisis
Helpline. There is assistance for
family members returning for
funerals.
The Covid-19 healthline
called on day two to check
on my state of mind and
coincidentally a nurse asked if
I’d had any suicidal thoughts
hours before the Crusaders
hosted the Highlanders on day
nine. I suggested she check up
again after full-time if they
hadn’t wrapped up Super Rugby
Aotearoa. False alarm.
• Are you allowed out of
the room?
Only for the health check, and
exercise from 0730 to 1730. There
were also Zumba, flax weaving
and Mau Rakau (Maori martial
arts) courses. You were confined
to your room when new flights
arrived and until a woman on
NZ104 was evacuated after testing
positive to Covid-19 after her
day three swab.
• What happens at the
daily health check?
Your temperature is taken
(in the ear) and you are asked
in no particular order if you
have a cough, trouble sleeping,
any anxiety, a fever, sore throat,
abdominal pain, sore joints,
headache, breathing difficulties,
vomiting and or diarrhoea. The
4sec Covid-19 swab is taken on
days three and 12.
• Is there interaction with
the hotel staff, private
security and defence
force personnel?
Minimal outside of a greeting
and explanation on why you’re
outside your room. Unlike Melbourne
where an amorous guard
and Covid-carrying returnee
combined to initiate a major
outbreak, the Distinction Hotel
staff treated you with suspicion,
dropped your food outside and
scuttled down the corridor, and
that’s not a criticism.
• How’s the mood when
you pass the second
Covid-19 swab and are
free to leave?
A sense of gratitude at the
assistance provided to return
home, a sense of accomplishment
that you emerged with your
faculties intact and a sense of
relief – until you realise you’re
still in Hamilton for another
night before the final leg of the
journey.

OPINION 19
Letter to Mrs C – ‘I’m sorry (truly!)’
From the
editor’s desk
Barry Clarke
DEAR Mrs C.
It’s been 10 years but it seems
like yesterday.
As you know I was in
Auckland on a six-month
work secondment, living in a
comfortable hotel apartment.
You stayed in Christchurch
and held the fort, and did a great
job.
Just after 4.35am on Saturday,
September 4, 2010, my cellphone
woke me out of a deep sleep. It
was you. What’s wrong I thought
when I saw your number?
“There’s been a huge earthquake.
It’s awful,” you said, or
something along those lines.
Mrs C, I was still half asleep,
and the fear in your voice probably
didn’t register. “It’s only an
earthquake . . . get under a door
frame,” I replied. Not an ideal
response, I know. Sorry.
Then the phone went dead.
You had hung up. I suppose I
deserved it.
I called back, you didn’t answer.
I called the landline. It was
dead. Mmm, I thought. I called
your cellphone again. It rang but
you didn’t answer. I tried the
landline once more. It was dead.
One more try to your
cellphone. Still no answer. It
dawned on me you were not
happy.
I was beginning to worry – not
because I was clearly in trouble
but because there probably had
been a big quake.
I turned on the television.
Nothing on TV1, 2 or 3 and
there was no breaking news
ticker running across the bottom
of the screen. So nah I thought,
must have just have been a routine
earthquake.
As you know Saturdays were
always big days on the paper so
I thought I might as well get up,
have some breakfast and get into
work early.
But Mrs C your silence was
weighing on my mind.
Then I got a call from a
freelance photographer in
Christchurch wanting to know
if she would be needed for quake
coverage.
“Is it a big one?’’ I worriedly
asked. “Big? It’s massive,” she
said.
Oh no I thought.
Still nothing on TV. So I
switched to CNN. Within a few
minutes they broke into their
news bulletin with a “large
earthquake has struck New Zealand’s
South Island near the city
of Christchurch.”
Mrs C you still didn’t answer
the phone.
I rang (brother) who was
under his kitchen table with
his family. “Absolutely huge,
terrifying, aftershocks are still
happening.”
Mrs C, I was now very
worried about you and as the
hours ticked by with no contact
the worry increased. I know
big quakes are followed by
big aftershocks and they can
do more damage to already
weakened buildings.
TV coverage when daylight
came showed how bad it was.
When I got back to
Christchurch the following
morning I half expected I’d have
to get the bus home.
But no, there you were to pick
me up. Many thanks.
Forgiven?
Willi Huber
editorial
I was concerned to read the
opinion piece about Willi Huber.
I don’t know the man or knew
anything about him until his
recent obituary.
However, I do know soldiering
and history. He enlisted in 1940,
as a 17-year-old kid, just as many
Kiwis did.
He joined a unit that his government
stated was the elite of
the German military for combat,
the Waffen SS.
As a teenage mountain guide
– or a Kiwi choosing to try for
the SAS – it surely would have
appealed to the adventuresome.
Though part of the SS, the
Waffen SS was a separate part
from the non-combat SS Death
Head units that ran concentration
camps, exterminated civilians
in occupied territories, or
the savage Gestapo, in contrast
to what the article stated.
He was in combat and would
have been at the fronts throughout.
It is possible his unit participated
in battle atrocities, as
other combat troops have done
(like Kiwis in Crete and North
Africa).
However, they were not systematic
or routine. Following
the war, his obituary stated he
was held for 16 months by the
Americans before release.
As an ex-American soldier
myself, I know that the Nazi/
SS soldiers were examined
Being released after being held
for an extended period, means
he was released as cleared and
innocent.
Then, he spent over 65 years
making New Zealand a better
place for all of us. The folks judging
him on this petition need to
be offering specific facts about
him before convicting him of
crimes he was already cleared
and released from.
Huber deserves that fair treatment
from his democratic, fellow
Kiwis. – Dave Evans
I believe your comments
(editorial) appeal to the thoughts
and actions of the pathetic radical
community who believe in
“remove the statues, ban war
heroes and protest against important
issues.”
Back in the day of hard-working,
caring New Zealanders, we
admired people who cared and
put every effort into making a
better life.
The new generation have little
and as for respecting people? –
M E Emberson misses the
I stand by my view that the
and refuse to engage in that
conversation. However offensive
speech which does not cross the
line of inciting hostility or ill will
set out in section 131 of the Human
permitted.
During the 80s, I was arrested
I expected to be charged and
which I was.
I am astonished that councillor
Racism
I know how to stop racism
here in Christchurch, let’s build
maraes here in Christchurch. I’m
Maori, to me a marae is a great
place to learn. Learning Maori
culture will help stop racism.
Remembering
Christchurch
Christchurch, when I last
visited 60 years ago, was a lovely,
distinguished small town in the
South Island.
It reminded me of many
similar towns in Australia. Old
fashioned, now not then, places
to eat and enjoy.
How my companion and I
enjoyed it.
I still have the lovely rug that
I bought from a lady antique
dealer.
Then you had the earthquake.
Then you had this simply appalling
attack upon your Muslim
population.
My sympathy is complete.
My hope is that your lovely
city will return to peace
and happiness for you all. –
New speeding
policy
I presume the next step will
have police cars with radar each
end of passing lane?
How will it now be possible
to pass a B-train on State
Highway 1 travelling at
95km/h-100km/h (I have never
seen one ticketed for exceeding
90km/h).
Hopefully, local police will use
discretion rather than follow a
stupid directive from someone
twiddling his/her thumb at a
desk in Wellington.
If it is a Labour political
ploy it will backfire. – N.G.
It’s a year since Environment Canterbury
declared a climate-change emergency
JENNY HUGHEY explains what
the council has been doing.
The formal declaration of a
state of climate emergency across
Canterbury was one of the most
serious, and colourful, moments
in the regional council’s more than
30-year history.
A year ago this Saturday,
at 11.49am, Environment
Canterbury became New Zealand’s
first council to proclaim such an
emergency, formally dedicating
itself to consideration of climate
change at the heart of all it does.
The declaration highlighted
that all the work Environment
Canterbury does – from
freshwater management to
biodiversity and biosecurity,
transport and urban development
to air quality, and also regional
leadership – has a climate change
focus.
Currently, under the Resource
Management Act, regional
councils are required only to adapt
to climate change, not mitigate
it – that responsibility is the
Government’s, but could change.
Even in ‘adapt mode’ many
of Environment Canterbury’s
existing policies and plans already
contribute to reduced emissions.
In declaring the climate
emergency, the Council noted it
would continue to show leadership
on climate-change and do so
without adding new programmes
at ratepayers’ expense. It also gave
staff a clear mandate to continue
and enhance that work.
That work included setting
up a climate-change integration
programme in the Long-term Plan
2018-28, ensuring climate change
was actively considered across
workstreams, increasing visibility
of the science and what we know
about the impact of climate
change on Canterbury, and liaising
on the issue with iwi and regional
partners, other local authorities
and central government.
As an organisation, we have
also made significant progress in
addressing our own greenhousegas
emissions, with our
Christchurch building receiving a
“market-leading” energy efficiency
rating of 5.0 out of 6 in the year
to February on the National
Australian Built Environment
Rating System New Zealand.
The building’s features include
184 solar panels which can
generate more than 55,000
kilowatt hours of electricity per
year.
There has been a 26% reduction
per staff member in emissions
since 30 June 2010. We now have
access to electric and hybrid
vehicles and hope to have half our
fleet hybrid or long-range electric
by 2022. Carbon emissions from
air travel across the organisation
are offset via our own biodiversity
programmes.
According to a Madworld report
in 2019, our gross emissions were
2253 tonnes of carbon dioxide
(CO2) equivalent, compared with
removals of 7883 tonnes of CO2-
equivalent through our efficiency
efforts and from forestry planting
across 2700 hectares.
The changing climate will pose
many risks to life and livelihood
in Canterbury. In recent years
we have seen how occasional,
but extreme, weather events have
had huge effects on residents and
infrastructure around the South
Island.
The driest parts of our region,
along the Marlborough coast and
across much of the Canterbury
Plains, are expected to get even
drier. North-westerly storms are
predicted to become more intense,
with torrential alpine rainstorms
turning our braided rivers into
roaring rapids, fuelling landslides
and causing widespread erosion.
Canterbury’s coastal
communities will be threatened
by sea-level rise this century and
our productive and protected land
jeopardised by the arrival and
spread of new, exotic weeds and
pests from warmer climates.
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
$8 billion of community and
business assets from a possible
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
December 1957, when parts
of Coutts Island in Belfast and
Kainga were swamped by river
flow peaking at 3990 cubic
metres per second (cumecs).
The protection scheme has been
designed to defend Christchurch
from a flood of as much as 6500
cumecs.
Environment Canterbury’s
leadership of biodiversity and
biosecurity programmes is also
underpinned by climate-change
concerns.
Canterbury’s distinct braided
rivers and unique wetlands face
many challenges. The rivers form
a vital ecological link and provide
an abundant food supply and
nesting grounds for 26 species of
native birds – most classified as
again you might like to avoid
peak-time travel.
I want to finish with a big
shout out to our bus drivers, who
do a great job in getting people
to their destinations as punctually
as possible. The alert level
2 restrictions make that task
harder.
The Government has made it
clear drivers are not responsible
for policing face-covering rules.
They may advise customers of
the requirement to wear a mask
or scarf, but are not in a position
to enforce it.
Please do everything required
of you on board, remember to be
kind to your fellow travellers and
don’t forget to thank the driver.
threatened and facing increased
pressures due to river system
change.
Wetlands are also ecosystems
at-risk nationally and regionally,
degraded by draining, damming
and diversion affecting their
ability to sequester carbon,
cleanse freshwater and mitigate
flooding, as well as impacting on
biodiversity and mahinga kai.
With biosecurity, we are
putting greater emphasis on the
risks of new pests establishing
in Canterbury. Warming
temperatures, changing soils and
new land uses mean new weeds
especially, will be able to gain a
better foothold across the region.
More broadly, we have to
curb reliance on fossil fuels and
find environmentally suitable
alternatives, such as electricity and
hydrogen, to power our public
transport.
When my predecessor Steve
Lowndes retired as chair of
this council late last year, he
highlighted some of the big
changes on the way. He was
optimistic we would be able to
deal with the “pressing issues” of
climate change and sustainability.
I share his confidence. As a
community, and as a council,
we are taking some bold steps to
ensure we are in a better place to
cope with the changing climate
and the tests it will set us. But
there will always be a need to do
more.

Festival of Adult Learning Ahueri Akonga
September
7th-13th
Taking a LEAP into the future
Adapting to the Covid-19 Alert Levels isn’t easy, but
it’s been a positive experience for the LEAP team
at Hohepa. LEAP stands for learning, exploring
activating potential – which is what they are
doing for the people they support with intellectual
disabilities and autism.
LEAP runs every weekday with around 80
options, shaped entirely by feedback from
participants - from craft activities to social walks,
performance and music, laughter yoga, mindfulness
and meditation, visits to local cafes, libraries and
businesses and gardening at schools.
Community participation manager Mark Unwin
says the team have risen to the challenge with
creativity and positivity, pivoting from a centralised
day programme delivered at the Birchwood campus
to home-based activities within each bubble.
“Arnah (Hohepa general manager) wasn’t just
on the ball, but ahead of the ball – we had lots of
meetings to brainstorm how this was all going to
work in lockdown”, says Mark.
“The biggest challenge is not seeing everyone for
our Monday community circles, so we’re having a
lot more Zoom meetings and phone calls to stay
connected. It’s really important that everyone feels
heard and valued and that we keep up that structure
for people.”
The LEAP team has designed programmes for
every house, providing individual learning options
for the people Hohepa supports, and collaborating
with the residential staff in each bubble. The teams
have enjoyed working more closely together to
deliver the programme in new ways.
New digital tools are helping, like an online
activity choice form, ebooks from Christchurch City
Libraries, Youtube videos and online games.
“It’s been an opportunity to find more of the
‘endless resources’ available on the Internet,” says
Mark, “and many of these will be here to stay.”
One of the most popular offerings is music
therapy, now available face to face in Levels 1 and
2, and virtually in Levels 3 and 4. Southern Music
Therapy have quickly scaled up their programme
and provided alternative options using Zoom,
recorded sessions, and video or phone calls for
individual sessions. Music therapy is bringing great
outcomes and joy to people during the lockdown,
with everyone enjoying singing and making music
together. There’s even a group performance in the
works.
“It’s been a real joy to facilitate and maintain the
strong sense of belonging that everyone at Hohepa
feels towards each other,” says music therapist May
Clulee.
“Real, significant connections occur as everyone
participates together in singing, dancing, sharing
about their day and just seeing each other’s faces,
despite being far apart.”
Mark and his team are thinking about how
some of these changes to LEAP might shape the
future, and they are all feeling positive despite the
challenges of working through different Alert Levels.
“When you do what we do, you can’t help but
enjoy it – feeling useful and helpful, providing
enriched learning experiences, and brightening
someone’s day, gives us so much joy and
satisfaction.”
Festival to promote lifelong learning
In Aotearoa New Zealand there are
thousands of opportunities to take part in
adult learning. Each year around half a
million adult New Zealanders participate
in learning programmes – in community
gardens, village halls, classrooms, marae,
own homes, local libraries, and online.
Latterly, whilst confined to their homes,
many people found themselves learning
something new – from sourdough to
mask-making. Adult learning is alive and
well!
Adult and Community Education (ACE)
covers all kinds of learning – whether it be
learning to adjust to life in a new country,
re-training to find employment, adjusting
to life after prison, acquiring parenting
skills, or just getting out and doing an
activity to make life better and meet
people.
During September, communities are
invited to come together for a festival
to explore learning journeys, celebrate
learner success, and join the conversation
about the value of lifelong learning. Local
ACE providers are offering a smorgasbord
of free classes to trial, from Natural
Chicken Husbandry at the Richmond
Community Garden, How to Quilt at
Avebury House, West African Drumming
at the Christchurch Music Centre, to the
week-long Have a Go - Learn Something
The Festival of Adult Learning Ahurei
Ākonga is a UNESCO initiative and
in Christchurch Otautahi it is directly
supported by Ako Aotearoa, Te
Pūtahitanga, local adult and community
education providers, and ACE Aotearoa.
The festival also incorporates International
Literacy Day on September 8, 2020.
In Christchurch Otautahi, the festival
starts with the opening of the Portraits of
Learning at Tūranga, Central Library – a
photo exhibition showcasing the learners
of our city, and the impacts of learning
on their lives. The exhibition runs from
September 5-20 and is also supported by
Make 2020 a learning
year with the WEA
This year the WEA has created new ways of working
together and supporting the community. With a strong team
directing our future, the building is busy with adult learners
coming for a variety of courses and talks, with subjects
including art, history, science, dance, music and crafts.
Some events coming up are:
Pizza and Climate Science with Paul Broady on Monday,
September 14.
This is for people that would like a little more detail than
what is often reported in the media. The session will look at
a selection of recent studies, which will be summarised and
discussed, with an emphasis on those dealing with biological
and ecological aspects of climate change.
Meditation with Friends have-a-go workshop on Monday,
September 21.
This is a one-off workshop led by Jennifer O’Neil. Meditation
is fantastic for enjoyment, for learning to reconnect with
self, whilst meeting other like-minded people. You will learn
to chase away the ‘monkey mind’ and allow yourself the
opportunity to de-stress through proven tools, basic breathing
techniques, meditation for muscle relaxation and guided
meditation.
Election debate October 5, 2020
This is an opportunity to meet central city and Te Tai Tonga
candidates as they answer two crucial questions:
• Can we tackle the climate crisis AND fight poverty in New
Zealand?
• What does ‘Political Integrity’ mean to you?
MC Ray Shipley will then facilitate questions from the floor.
Term 4 starts October 19 and the programme can be seen
at www.cwea.org.nz, where you can register online. Printed
programmes can be found at the WEA at 59 Gloucester Street,
and at libraries and many other places around the city.
The WEA is centrally located (just opposite the Christchurch
Art Gallery on Gloucester Street) and committed to making
education accessible to all.
iron, phosphorus and
vitamin A
Poached tamarillos in
honey and vanilla syrup
4 servings
Ingredients
8 red tamarillos
1 vanilla pod
1 cup caster sugar
1 cup water
2 tbsp honey
4 light ice cream slices
Directions
Cut a cross in each tamarillo.
Blanch in boiling water for 30secs
then refresh in cold water. Peel
the skins and slice into 1cm
rounds.
Halve vanilla pod and scrape
seeds into a saucepan. Add pod,
sugar, water and honey. Stir over
low heat, without boiling, until
sugar has dissolved. Increase heat
Poached tamarillos in honey and vanilla syrup.
and simmer uncovered, for 5min.
Add tamarillo slices and simmer
for 2min. Allow to cool in syrup.
Serve fruit and syrup over ice
cream.
Tamarillo loaf cake
10 slices
Ingredients
145gm butter, softened
½ cup caster sugar
2 tbsp honey
2 large eggs
⅔ cup plain flour
2 tsp baking powder
¼ cup almond meal
Splash of milk (optional)
5 large tamarillos, peeled and
cut into 3 thick slices
Directions
Preheat oven to 180 deg C.
Grease and line a 25cm x 13cm
loaf tin. Dust the bottom lightly
with flour.
Cream the butter, sugar and
honey until light and fluffy. Add
eggs, one at a time, and beat until
combined (don’t worry if the
Tamarillo loaf cake.
batter curdles). Fold in the sifted
flour, baking powder and almond
meal, then mix. The batter
should be light and somewhere
between a stiff and dropping
consistency. If it’s too
stiff, loosen by adding
a little milk.
Put the tamarillo
slices in a single
layer on the base
of the prepared
tin. Scrape the
batter over and
smooth. Bake for 45-
50min or until an inserted
skewer comes out clean.
Leave to cool for 15min, then
invert onto a plate so that the cut
tamarillos face
upwards.
GARDENING 27
GARDENING ADVICE
Today’s winning question came from
The Faloon-Cavanders. Congrats!
What schedule of care could we
Q practice in raising a wonderful
crop for a family of strawberry
lovers? Do you have a plan we
could follow? And in particular, our
three-year-old strawberry plants
scattered around our garden, we feel like
they need some care, but what do we do?
Read our free How to Grow Strawberries
Guide which includes information on the
best varieties to grow:
www.daltons.co.nz/how-to-guides.
A
WIN a Veggie Garden Planting and Care Pack
Strawberry plants are most productive in their fi rst and second year, but after three years,
fruit production starts to slow down. To ensure a continual succession of cropping it’s
good practice to replace plants after this time.
Typically, you need to divide and replant strawberry plants, or buy new ones during
late May, June and early July. Dividing your plants now (September) means you won’t be picking
strawberries until closer to Christmas time. Try replacing or adding to your existing plants with
a variety called Temptation. This is a ‘day neutral’ variety which means it will fl ower and fruit
while the temperature and conditions are suitable e.g between 0 to 30 degrees.
Strawberry plants thrive in a sunny warm position. Enrich the soil before planting by
adding Daltons Garden Time Strawberry Mix and compost and work it in to
about 1 ½ spades deep. Plant into mounded soil in rows running north to south,
spacing individual plants about 100-150mm apart.
Feed plants with Daltons Garden Time Strawberry Fertiliser from late Sept/
early October, through till early December. Remove any young fl owers until early
October as fruit formed before this date will be of poor size and taste. Mulch plants
with pea straw or clean crushed bark as they begin fruiting.
Next late autumn/early winter, divide and remove runners (baby
strawberry plants) that grow from your existing “mother” plant
and plant them out for the following season strawberries.
If purchasing new plants, choose a number of
different named varieties as this will extend the
harvesting season.
Becoming more self-suffi cient by growing your own vegetables is empowering and saves you
money. No matter how big or small your space; you can successfully grow vegetables in regular
garden beds, raised beds or in pots and containers. Prepare your soil for planting by digging
in plenty of organic matter such as Daltons Compost or Garden Time Vegetable Mix which
improves the soil quality. Use fresh container mix for growing in pots or raised beds.
Each pack is valued at $70 and contains 2 x Garden Time Vegetable Mix, Daltons
Goldcote Vegetable and Herb Fertiliser, Besgrow Coir mulch and a Garden Time
Chicken and Sheep Pellets, plus a pair of comfortable, versatile Red Back gardening
gloves from Omni Products www.omniproducts.co.nz.
EDIBLE GARDENS have
never been more popular and
one of the easiest of fruits to
cultivate is the strawberry.
Because of their compact
habit, strawberries can be
grown in hanging baskets,
containers or the aptly-named
strawberry pots, as well as the
usual raised-up garden beds.
Strawberries have a long
history. They are traditionally
thought of as having European
origins but wild species are
also found in North and South
America. Modern day strawberries
tend to have very mixed
heritage, which has made them
stronger than their ancestors.
They’re also sweeter, less
woody, more prolific and less
affected by day length. They
can begin cropping in a matter
of weeks and will go on producing
for much of the year,
especially in warmer areas.
•Strawberries in the
garden – Choose a sunny
position that hasn’t grown
strawberries for a number of
years and dig in some organic
compost. Plant strawberry runners
or seedlings into raised-up
mounds, and apply a layer of
mulch.
Debate rages as the origin of
the strawberry’s name. Some
say that it’s a corruption of
‘strew berry’, so-called because
the berries are strewn along the
stems.
Others insist that the name
refers to the straw that is
often used as a mulch around
the plants, which is a useful
reminder of how important it
is to mulch the plants, both to
retain moisture and to keep the
fruit cleanly above the soil.
Pea straw or lucerne hay
make a good a mulch.
Remove runners, unless you
want to use them to propagate
some new plants (which should
be done every three years or so).
•Strawberries in pots
$70
container. Fill with a top quality
potting mix and plant the
strawberries. Water in well.
Feed occasionally with plant
food and watch out for snails
and slugs.
•Strawberries in
hanging baskets – This is
a fun way to grow strawberries,
but the main challenge with
growing any plant in a hanging
basket is that it’s much more
vulnerable to drying out. Line
moss baskets with plastic sheet
and poke in a few holes for
drainage. Fill with a hanging
basket mix which contains
added soil wetters and waterstoring
crystals.
The veteran horseman,
Friday, was charged with
allowing its stablemate
Royal Pride to ease into
up the usual composition
of Canterbury Rugby
a new-look decider.
The Kaiapoi-based
Bulldogs host the perennial
finalist at Murphy
winner set to meet fourtime
defending champion
Linwood in next Sunday’s
Massetti Cup finale, barring
a massive upset.
The in-form Bulldogs
shape as favourites for the
straight elimination clash
with the Panthers, having
dropped only one game so
far – to Linwood in round
two.
The Bulldogs, who have
benefited from former Kiwis,
Warriors and Wigan
coach Frank Endacott
assisting head coach Brent
Ringdahl this year, met
Hornby once in the regular
season, running out comfortable
42-24 winners in
the penultimate round on
August 22.
said this was clearly a
breach of the rules in that
De Filippi had driven to
assist another horse.
Royal Pride finished
second. Spot The Gamble
later broke in the running
and finished last.
De Filippi told the
committee hearing the
was to get around in one
piece and in conjunction
with the horse’s manners,
was why he restrained
be buoyed by a 54-18
hammering of the fourthplaced
last weekend.
The Knights face the
ominous task of ending
Linwood’s quest for a fifth
meet at Linwood Park on
Saturday.
Both games are subject
his horse not because the
stablemate was likely to be
parked in the race.
When handing down
its decision, the committee
said: “Mr De Filippi
has driven in a manner
that could be expected
and is commonplace at
trials and workouts but
certainly not in the competitive
environment of a
race day.”
driving after September 25.
Volvo S60 built to sport sedan values
I STILL FIND it quite strange
that out of the two highlyregarded
Swedish car makers,
only one remains – Volvo.
For decades Volvo and Saab
battled it out in most global
markets selling their products
with an emphasis on safety and
performance.
Both companies entered
partnerships with other major
automotive conglomerates, and
it looked as if they both had rosy
futures, yet only Volvo survived.
I am concerned though,
Volvo has struggled through the
coronavirus outbreak, production
in the Swedish factories has been
affected, which will ultimately
have a flow-on effect on product.
I’m hoping this great luxury/
performance car maker will
bounce back, I’d hate it to be a
casualty.
Nevertheless, prior to the
pandemic Volvo had embarked
on a product development plan
that would allow it to continue to
compete solidly on a global level
amidst a wealth of other luxury
marques.
Locally, Volvo is represented by
a solid dealer network, and there
is a good selection of product at
present. Most of it is sport utility
vehicle-focussed, but within
its line-up there are a couple of
surprises, and they are the cars
that excite me the most.
Just recently I drove the new
V60 T8 station wagon, its 2-litre
turbocharged and supercharged
engine stood out for its muscular
performance yet also its economy,
its plug-in hybrid technology
promotes substantial fuel usage
savings. I became very smitten
with that car, it represented all
of the values I like in a vehicle.
When I took it back I immediately
swapped it for the S60 sedan.
Whereas in the past the
difference between the V and S
series was mostly the choice of
sedan or wagon, today there’s
a lot more change. The S60
sedan doesn’t get the hybrid
driveline and the engine is sans
supercharger, it’s the same basic
engine design, but it just gets
turbocharged technology.
Now, before you think that’s a
backward step, don’t be fooled.
The S60 T5 is a smart car and
didn’t lose any credibility with
me, it is a fine luxury vehicle, and
is genuinely honest. What’s more,
if you don’t need the capacity of
VOLVO S60 T5: Complete luxury and performance car.
a wagon and don’t want outright
speed, then you can save $32,000
straight up.
The S60 T5 lists at $82,900
against $114,900 for the T8, and
the T8 evaluation car that I drove
was full of kit which added an
extra $6500.
That being the case, the S60 T5
sits well in the luxury market and
it is still no slouch when it comes
to power and performance. Volvo
rates it with a 192kW output and
a beefy 400Nm of torque. That’s
enough to propel the vehicle
from a standstill to 100km/h in
6.3sec. It will also lunge through a
highway overtake (80-120km/h)
in 4.5sec.
These times aren’t to be sneezed
at, and all of the time when you
are driving the T5 it feels feisty,
drive is through an eight-speed
traditional automatic gearbox,
and power is delivered through
all four corners.
Volvo also claims a 7.3l/100km
combined cycle fuel economy
average. Well, that’s far distant to
the 2l/100km claim of its more
powerful yet hybrid stablemate,
which is a compromise. But for
me, I’d not be bothered, there is
more about driving a Volvo than
saving fuel.
However, I did my usual
fuel usage checks, and at
100km/h on the highway the
readout was listing 5.6l/100km
instantaneously, the engine
quite relaxed, just ticking over
at 1700rpm in eighth gear.
When I took the car back to the
dealership the combined cycle
average was sitting at around
9l/100km.
As I’ve alluded to, the T5 is
a luxury car which borders on
performance, and it feels just
so right to be in. The interior is
• Price – Volvo S60 T5,
$82,900
• Dimensions – Length,
4761mm; width, 1850mm;
height, 1427mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1969cc, 192kW, 400Nm,
eight-speed automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 6.3sec
• Fuel usage – 7.3l/100km
quality through and through,
and the controls are just lovely
to manipulate. The S60 (and
V60) feels like a big car but it
isn’t overly sizeable at 4.76m. It is
compact but space on the inside
is generous, and with cocooning
seats you feel quite stately inside.
It also provides true sports car
feel. Everything about the way the
chassis is set-up is engineered for
safety and an involving driving
experience.
I particularly enjoyed my two
weeks with the wagon and sedan,
and quite simply I’d have to sit
on the fence if I was asked which
variant I enjoyed the most. Both
stood out in different ways, and
because I’m a big fan of both
sedans and wagons they each had
individual merit.
Any buyer will be guaranteed
a spectacular purchase, a car that
will serve well for decades, not
forgetting it has the traditional
values that make Volvo the
exceptional car maker it is.

When you’ve lived in a property for a while
it can be hard to be rational about its worth.
How can you put a price on the spot where
you’ve built so many memories with family
won’t they? Unfortunately potential buyers
may see things differently, especially in a
There are several methods you can use to
gauge the worth of your property. Remember
that the rateable value or RV (formerly
known as the government valuation, or
GV) of your property doesn’t really provide
any clues. These valuations are done by
the local council to work out what share of
rates a household should pay. They are only
done every three years and don’t take any
improvements into account – increasingly,
properties that include an RV figure in the
advertising will come with a disclaimer that
it is not indicative of current market value.
These days you can gather a lot of
information for free thanks to websites like
Trade Me and Homes.co.nz. Trade Me’s
Property Insights has information on more
than 1.5 million homes, including rateable
value data, previous sale prices, when the
property was built and what size it is. The
site also provides an estimated value range,
based on a melting pot of data from sales of
comparable properties, listing details and
user activity. Homes.co.nz operates similarly.
Its estimate service is built on a complex
set of valuation models, using around 30
million pieces of data bought from councils
nationwide, plus sales values and a wide set
of property features. Both sites recognise
there are a number of factors at play, so they
offer an estimated value range that can be
quite broad.
While both these sites are useful, they
don’t show the full picture and should only
be used as the starting point in determining
value. They can’t take the condition of your
property into account and they may not
recognise any improvements you might
have made (though homes.co.nz does allow
owners to ‘claim’ their property and edit
information about it).
EVERY THURSDAY
What’s my house
really worth?
Let’s say you own a large property in an
area where there have been some big-ticket
sales in the last year. Your property might
have some serious structural issues and be in
generally poor condition, yet the algorithms
may claim that it is worth a lot more than any
sensible buyer would pay for it because other
houses in the neighbourhood have sold for
high prices. The impact of this is two-fold.
Firstly, the seller could anticipate a big payday
that may never arrive; and secondly,
some buyers may be put off making an offer
because they think it’s out of range.
There are a couple of ways to combat this.
When you start working with a real estate
agent to sell your property they must supply
you with a current market appraisal or
CMA. This is based on similar information
to the online versions, but it also comes with
the agent’s real-time, real-life knowledge
of the area, what similar properties have
sold for and the condition and particular
characteristics of your own property (such
as whether it has been repainted recently
or it’s in a state of disrepair). The agent will
have had the chance to walk through your
property and identify its unique selling
propositions, such as good sun, proximity
to desirable schools and other features that
buyers like. It’s important to note that you
may get varying CMA ranges from different
real estate agents as they may each take a
divergent perspective on your property that
you will then need to consider.
Your other option is to pay a registered
valuer to provide you with an independent
valuation. This service comes at a cost (the
price will vary, depending on the level of
detail), but it will be more accurate. The
Property Institute, which represents valuers,
says a registered valuation can help sellers be
a little more clinical about their property’s
worth.
Even with all the information you can
gather, the true indication of your property’s
value is what a willing buyer will pay for it
at the given time that it’s on the market. A
valuation, a price range or a figure reached
by an algorithm is not cash in the bank.
or selling property, check out
