LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

New world and

new generation

of textiles!

The textile world will witness two major

events this April with less than one week

in between: Proposte (Italy) and Evteks

(Turkey). We will observe a great range

of new products and trends in these

shows mostly in contemporary fields as

sustainability, innovation and value-added

production.

Sustainable living is an important trend

in the modern world and it is becoming

more and more of a concern in the

21st century, as the impacts of human

production and waste are becoming

inescapably apparent.

Sustainable textiles

We put a lot of effort into our textiles.

Across the world and throughout history,

textiles have been the base of some of

the most lucrative economies and networks

of exchange in the world. Textiles

are important, and it's not just because

we need them to stay warm. We enjoy

our textiles. But, we want to be able to

feel good about our textiles. In accordance

with that agenda, many people in

the world are pushing for more sustainable

textiles, or ethically produced fabrics.

We may look good in our textiles, but we

want to feel good about them too.

Changing trends in world

textiles

The value of world textile exports

returned to growth in 2017 for the first

time in two years with notable trends.

According to the recently released World

Trade Statistical Review 2018 from the

World Trade Organization (WTO),

the current dollar value of world textiles

(SITC 65) exports totaled 296.1 billion

dollars in 2017, up 4.2% from a year

earlier. This is the first time since 2015

that the value of world textile exports has

seen growth.

Turkey’s contract textiles

Turkey has developed an excellent

industry in contract textiles in all areas

including fabrics, drapery, hotel textiles,

floor and wall coverings, etc. There are

a lot of manufacturers in flame retardant

textile production and exports. In mid-

April this year, some of these leading

textile companies will be at International

Observatory in Sheraton Lake in Cernobbio,

Italy to display best examples of

these contract textiles addressing mainly

to European customers. And there will

be more in EVTEKS, Istanbul, 23-27

April 2019.

As seen on the table of WTO, Turkey

ranks fourth in country-base owing this

success to its adherence to innovative,

trendy and value-added manufacturing

approach to the industry.

Turkish contracting industry,

a world brand

Turkey is not only good at the textile industry

in general and in contract textiles

in particular but also in all related items

and services of interior design. The

country has all means to undertake gigantic

international contracting projects.

Turkey's unique geographical location

PINAR TAŞDELEN ENGİN

President, Uludag Textile Exporters’ Association

contributes a great deal to the global

competitiveness of the Turkish contracting

services abroad. Turkey’s strength in

the field is not only due to its location,

but also the cost effective service provided

at international standards, high client

satisfaction, credibility in partnerships,

extensive knowledge and vast experience

in a wide variety of projects, familiarity

with the business environments in the

neighboring regions, qualified manpower

and a calculated risk-based approach

to business.

Turkish overseas contracting services

sector is among the most sophisticated

service sectors of Turkey with having

undertaken 8.772 projects in 110 different

countries with the value of 329,1

billion US Dollars since 1972.

UTIB EVENTS

Impressive UTIB info

stand at Heimtextil

arose great interest

The association

developed a special

stand to display the

selected items of

Turkish exhibitors

in, Heimtextil / 8-11

January 2019

UTIB (Uludag Textile Exporters’

Association) led an initiation by a

stand where it was contributing to

the promotion of Turkey’s cultural

values, tunes and even the special

tastes with an approach of a mission

in addition to representing the

country’s home textile industry

efficiently in all events it participates

by offering different talents of

Turkey in different disciplines to the

visitors.

The association developed a special

stand to display the selected items of

Turkish exhibitors in Heimtextil, the

world’s largest textile fair that was

participated by 287 Turkish firms. It

offered an opportunity to all visitors

to touch the fabrics, to study all the

products at one spot and to help

them in their choice decision in order

to lead them to the stands of these

firms. Once again, UTIB offered the

prestige and large variety of Turkish

textiles to the admiration of global

visitors.

The impact of the UTIB stand has

been enforced by the mini edition of

a special exhibition called, “Genetic

Codes of Turkish Design” which

was inspired by Turkish historical

values and covered selected samples

of a multidisciplinary collection

composed of the historical, cultural

and modern designs and ideas of all

societies lived and have been living

in the geography of Turkey.

8 April/2019

The wealth of Turkish artisanship

and art culture turns out to be

unique products at the hands of

talented Turkish designers. These

products shape the genetic codes

of “Turkey Design” and inspire the

future designer talents.

Developed with passion this

collection proves the importance of

deep rooted source of designs in the

formation of new collections that

reflect social rituals, local production

techniques, geometric forms, objects,

and imprints in a modern global

world of designs.

Genetic Codes of Turkish Design

was presented first in Design Week

Turkey 2017 and several influencers,

designers, and doyens were interested

in. The second edition of the exhibit

was repeated in 16-18 November

2018 edition of the same event and

was admired again very efficiently.

Curated by Gencer Ucar and Arif

Eker, the exhibit was now repeated

in Heimtextil 2019, in Frankfurt,

from 8th to 11th January 2019. The

exhibit offered specially selected

items from the collection which was

formed in the last two years to the

visitors.

The Info Stand of UTIB was also

a venue for the award for Turkey

Home Textile Design Accolade,

held by the support of Ministry

of Commerce and coordinated by

UTIB, Uludag Textile Exporters

Association, and TIM, Turkish

Exporters Assembly.

The contest is held on changing

themes each year and aims to

promote the raising of new designers,

and to offer new and value added

products to the sector.

“Emigration” was the theme of last

year’s contest that was given to Re-

Turn design of Ezgi Vural. Fatma

Korkmaz’s Going Back was given

the second and Multivers of Ezgi

Cavusoglu won the third prize.

All of the works of the trio of the 8th

Turkey Home Textile Design Contest

were exhibited in Heimtextil Fair,

and an armchair upholstered with the

Re-Turn fabric produced from the

winner Ezgi Vural’s design were also

displayed at Heimtextil Fair.

Elips Design &

Property Awards for

BJK No 1903 Project

BJK No1903 which was designed and constructed by Elips Design &

Architecture, became winner at the International Property Awards, where

the best projects from all over the world competed, after being selected as

the “Best Mixed Use Interior Project” at the European Property Awards.

Elips Design & Architecture which

works on different award winning

architectural, interior design projects

and also furniture design projects

in national and global scope under

the leadership of Master Architect

Feza Ökten Koca, has won “Best

International Mixed-Use Interior

Project” award with its BJK No 1903

project that is located in İstanbul,

Akatlar.

After the meetings with the President

Fikret Orman who is the 33rd

chairman of Besiktas Gymnastics

Club, Elips Design & Architecture

started to work for No1903 Project

in the beginning of 2016 with the

aim of providing a high quality

facility which will reflect the spirit

of BJK society and be open to public

use. Design and project planning

phases done according to the needs

of building program which has 4600

m² open area and 3600 m² closed

area. Elips Design & Architecture

underlined that the architectural

identity of the building was the

guide on the way of creating spaces

according to needs programme. The

team aimed to provide maximum

volume and daylight usage while

creating modern spaces with

asymmetric and different angles.

Elips Design & Architecture created

different spatial details by using

various materials such as marble,

parquet, tile, epoxy, ceramic, mirror,

wood, brass, wallpaper, fabric

covering, acoustic panels, stainless,

glass in the interior. The firm

designed every corner of the facility

in a different way and has produced

solutions meticulously to prevent

the disturbing affect of all technical

details and equipment on the

aesthetics of space. Both exterior and

interior spaces of the building has

the mutual language to provide an

integrated living space for the user.

All details, from the fireplace frame

to the lightings, from wire flower

objects to benches, from the main

entrance to the wall coverings, are

designed individually. The paintings

on the walls were painted by a painter

in the way that reflects the identity of

the space.

Creation of Qualified Spaces by

using Mutual Design Approach

Besides from the main entrance

and reception, Casual Restaurant

which has a large terrace with a

children's play area facing the front

façade, The Eagle House lounge

area which is designed for the BJK

congress members and managers

with a terrace facing to the back

façade, the main kitchen, warehouses

and customer and staff wet volumes

are located on the ground floor

of the building. Although each

space designed independently with

different materials, Elips Design

providing the mutual design

design.

BOLD Restaurant, which has a total

area of 790 m² on the first floor,

differs from the ground floor with its

different atmosphere that includes a

large bar corner, a fireplace section

with comfortable leather chairs,

wooden and marble tables. Master

Architect Feza Koca sums up this

special place with the following

words:

”The high ceiling and glass facades

of the place gives freshness to the

space. In contrast to the marble

and mirror veneers used on the

walls, we have provided an acoustic

solution while providing a warm

and moving effect with the wooden

and acoustic panels in the form of

circles under the metal honeycombs

that we used in the ceiling. The

Blackhall Hall, which is designed to

serve special meetings and events,

can be combined with the Bold

Restaurant with the movable walls

in the hall and it enables a bigger

space for the organization of other

big events. The meeting area called

Mr. President is designed as a special

area with meeting room, service,

WC and cloakroom which is open

to the use of the chairman and the

board members. It was our primary

goal to provide a good acoustics

in this meeting room. The wood

veneers used in some parts of the

wall covered with acoustic panels

support this goal. Black acoustic

ceiling is designed with the design

of lacquered wood inspired from

the way the camera visor opens. The

meeting table and seats were brought

from the Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club

because the important agreements

were signed on this table and it has a

spiritual value.”

Gym Club on the first basement

floor, which has a total 1100 m² area,

includes the fitness area, spinning

and pilates studio with sauna, steam

room, relaxation and massage rooms,

indoor pool, outdoor pool and

children's pool. The fitness section

facing the front façade has a terrace

which has camouflaged the retaining

wall by landscape design formed at

different angles on the terrace. Elips

Design & Architecture has followed

the same design approach and the

material catalogue which they used

by taking their inspiration from the

colors of Beşiktaş for the design of

the main entrance gate and security

building like the main building and

for the landscape design, creating

a large and simple grass field was

considered as the main idea. The

4600 m² outdoor area is planned to

be used for different purposes such

as wedding, celebration and openair

cinema. There are 2 entrances

and 2 security buildings and a car

park with a capacity of 60 vehicles is

designed.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Investment

opportunities

in Brunei

Foreign Minister Cavusoglu: “There are

many possibilities for Turkish companies

in Brunei, and Turkey is also offering a lot

of opportunities for investors coming from

Brunei.”

Brunei Darussalam’s five

priority areas of business

and investment are halal,

technology & creative

industry, business services, tourism,

and downstream oil & gas. These

sectors capitalize on Brunei

Darussalam’s strength as a strong

Islamic nation with its abundant

natural resources and highly educated

skilled people.

Brunei Darussalam literally means

Brunei, the abode of peace. Indeed,

Brunei is one of the most peaceful

countries around the world with the

lowest crime rates. Brunei is divided

into four districts namely Belait,

Temburong, Tutong and Brunei

Muara. Despite Brunei Muara

being the smallest district, the capital

Bandar Seri Begawan is located here.

The country is located on the north

coast of the island of Borneo in

Southeast Asia. It is a small oil-rich

sultanate bordering bounded to the

north by the South China Sea and on

all other sides by the East Malaysian

state of Sarawak, which also divides

the state into two disconnected

segments of unequal size. The western

segment is the larger of the two and

contains the capital city of Bandar

Seri Begawan. Brunei achieved

independence in 1984, after having

been a British protectorate since 1888.

It is a member of the Commonwealth

and ASEAN (Association of

Southeast Asian Nations).

Although Brunei is a small country

with an area of just 5,765 sq km, yet

it is one of the richest countries in the

world. Thanks to the underground

riches of the natural resources

discovered back in 1929. Since

then, oil and gas has been the main

inflows to the country, and providing

exclusive welfare where no other

countries have afford such as free

education, free health care, no income

taxation and tax-free house loan for

civil servants.

32 April/2019

The country is ruled by the

Sultan, 29th in succession to

throne and governed under the

philosophy of Melayu Islam

Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy

or MIB) has been in existence as

early as the 14th century when

the Sultan at that time converted

to Islam. Since then, MIB has

become the nation’s system of

ruling, its way of life and form of

Government until today.

The country has a population of

almost half of a million. Spoken

languages are Bahasa Melayu

(Malay, official), English, Chinese

and native languages of Borneo.

Brunei’s economy is almost totally

dependent on the exploitation of

its vast reserves of petroleum and

natural gas. The country enjoys

a healthy economy and political

stability, which is largely thanks to

the abundant oil and gas reserves,

allowing the people to enjoy a

comfortable way of life.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Although oil and gas revenues

have allowed the state to give its

citizens one of the highest per

capita incomes in Asia, they also

have made the country dependent

on a single commodity that is

subject to market fluctuations.

In addition, Brunei must rely

on imports for nearly all its

manufactured goods and most

of its food. In an effort to ensure

the country’s economic stability,

the government has since the late

20th century striven to diversify

the economy by developing other

sectors, such as agriculture,

fisheries, tourism, and financial

services.

Oil was first produced in 1929,

while the natural gas industry

was developed after the discovery

in the 1960s of large deposits.

Output of oil reached a peak in

the late 1970s and subsequently

was reduced in order to conserve

reserves. Intensive exploitation

of the country’s huge deposits of

natural gas in the 1970s included

the construction of a liquefaction

plant, and LNG has since become

a major source of Brunei’s export

earnings. In addition to its

hydrocarbon reserves, the country

has rich deposits of white quartz

sand that remained virtually

undeveloped in the early 21st

century.

Turkey-Brunei economic

relations

Turkish foreign minister discussed

bilateral economic and trade

relations in Brunei on Nov. 7,

2018.

The sources who spoke on

condition of anonymity said

Mevlüt Çavusoğlu met with

Brunei's Second Minister of

Foreign Affairs and Trade Dato

Erywan Yusof. Çavusoğlu also met

with Sultan of Brunei Hassanal

Bolkiah. His Majesty the Sultan

marked the first visit of a Turkish

foreign minister to the Sultanate

The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque in Bandar

Seri Begawan, Brunei

Hasan el-Bulkiye Muizziddin Va'dulah,

Sultan of Brunei

since diplomatic relations were

established in 1984.

“Brunei is trying to diversify its

economy. His Majesty the Sultan

has been emphasising this in every

statement,” Cavusoglu said in an

interview with state broadcaster

Radio Televisyen Brunei.

In the past five years, Turkish

companies have invested in several

business ventures with the Brunei

government, including a $30

million margarine plant in Serasa

and a $1.8 billion fertiliser plant

in Sungai Liang. The Brunei

Investment Agency also owns a

20 percent stake in Istanbul-based

Yıldız Holding, one the largest

food manufacturers in Central and

Eastern Europe, the Middle East

and Africa.

Turkey's foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu (L)

meets HM the Sultan of Brunei at Istana Nurul

Iman on Nov 7, 2018.

The foreign minister said Turkey

was keen to expand its partnership

with ASEAN, after becoming a

sectoral dialogue partner to the

10-nation bloc earlier this year.

During the minister's meetings,

economic and trade relations,

increasing investments and

making reciprocal high level

visits were discussed. “ASEAN

and Turkey have agreed to

develop several cooperation

areas to further strengthen this

partnership. There are many

aspects of cooperation we can look

at,” the minister added.

Two-way trade between ASEAN

and Turkey has increased by

22 percent over the past four

years, from US$7.94 billion

in 2013 to US$9.68 billion in

2017. Meanwhile, foreign direct

Akarca Tekstil

Company has

been growing

by producing

different designs

and collections in

contract textile. The

company's wide

product range is in

demand from many

parts of the world.

Founded in 1990 in Bursa and producing in the home textile

sector, Akarca Tekstil has a wide range of products. Akarca

produces 650,000 m2 of fabric per month and exports 75% of its

production. Akarca Tekstil, which is one of the two Turkish companies

newly accepted in 2019 to the Proposte fair, is counting down to meet its

visitors at the Proposte fair, which is one of the most important fairs of

the sector. Murat Zumbulyuva, Chairman of the Board of Directors of

Akarca Tekstil, made a statement to the Contract Business magazine on

the occasion of the Proposte fair.

Murat Zumbulyuva stated that as Akarca Tekstil, they always want to

produce quality products instead of increasing their production capacity.

He said that they had recently diversified the flame retardant products

they produce for the contract sector. He added that they started to work

on stock and added the outdoor fabrics to their collections.

41

PROFILE

Zumbulyuva said, “We can explain

Akarca Tekstil's recognition

in the sector to having its own

production facility and offering

the flame retardant products to

their customers. They are made

of fire-resistant yards not made of

chemical based materials, besides,

the effects of these chemicals are not

permanent."

R&D is not a new topic for

Akarca!

Akarca Tekstil, which is the provider

of material for the companies in

the contract businesses, provides

service to Antalya-based hotels and

hospitals with its brand Minerva.

The company has been working with

4 textile engineers for developing

patterns for 15-16 years. The firm

buys works of designers from many

countries such as Italy, France,

Spain, and adapts them to its own

fabrics. It is by no means concerned

with other companies' designs and

qualities. Zumbulyuva said that

quality and design are of their

own business and that they had

successfully continued to underline

that they had recently prepared

special products. He emphasized,

“R&D is not a new topic for us."

Murat Zumbulyuva and Meral Keskin

"We have exported to 70

different countries"

As of 2018, the company grew its

international network considerably

and it mainly deals with markets in

Europe, Mediterranean countries,

Canada, America, Singapore,

Thailand, Taiwan, China, New

Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea and

Africa. Emphasizing that they export

to these regions, Murat Zumbulyuva

said, "We have exported to 70

different countries and we are

increasing them even more with fairs

and travels."

“We are in

Villa Erba”

Akarca, one of the six Turkish

companies participating in the

Proposte Fair and taking its place

in the villa Erba, is also taking the

lead in Turkish contract textiles.

Among many companies that

invest in R&D, prepare their own

collections and integrate with

the world, Akarca Tekstil was

accepted inside Villa Erba. Murat

Zumbulyuva further said: "Our

most important achievement is

to be in Villa Erba in Proposte.

There they look at your products,

exhibits and what you can develop

more. We worked very well on our

homework; we prepared and made

a presentation. We are pleased to

be at Villa Erba, there are more

Turkish companies that deserve

to be there, and we hope that they

will be accepted into the villa

next years. We are sure that more

Turkish firms will enter Villa Erba

in the future.”

Akarca Textile will participate in

the biggest fairs in its field such as

Heimtextil in Frankfurt, Proporte

in Italy, Evteks in Istanbul and

Intertextile in Shanghai.

44 April/2019

"Our knowledge makes us

different"

Akarca Tekstil, which has been

growing in this sector for 25

years, employs experienced and

professional people. 25 years ago,

the company was working in hotel

textiles segment, and then in 2000

it began to serve in the curtain

industry. He detailed about the

approaches in the sector: "Firms

are trying to make production

for the needs of the contract

sector, and now they are more

interested in the contract sector.

Renewal periods are extending in

home textiles but it is becoming

shortened in contract textile. Our

experience and knowledge in

the sector is the main points that

differentiate us in the market.”

The company, which is in the

nirvana in the sector with its

different collections, now stands

out with its products consisting

of natural fibers. Akarca Textile

makes new additions to the

collection he prepared for

Heimtextil and produces dyed

fabric from yarn and adds new

ones to flame retardant fabric

collections. “We believe that

spending enough time for the

contract market and to show

interest and offer the right

products will be the way out for

the curtain industry. The contract

works are not just for hotels, but

a time-consuming task that needs

to be done in a certain amount of

time and require a lot of effort.

All of these should be done in line

with other functions of business.

We want companies in this sector

to improve themselves, if they are

to be successful," he outlined.

Turkish contracting

services around the world

The government set its

goal as to increase the

yearly value undertaken

projects by Turkish

companies to 100 billion

US Dollars in 2023. The

construction material

industry export increased

30.8% in January 2019.

Turkish contracting companies

successfully compete on

5 continents and in 120

countries offering affordable

services of high quality. They are

open to enhancing international

partnerships not only in the field of

contracting, but also in construction

industry investments, ranging

from the production of building

materials to infrastructure, housing,

industrial plants and tourism

projects in the African, Eurasian and

Middle Eastern countries. Turkish

contractors continue to increase their

competitiveness with extensive knowhow

and experience gained in all

kinds of challenging projects and in

all forms of business environments

This success might be attributed to

Turkey’s competitive advantages;

including its qualified human

resource, enhanced technical

knowledge, wide business experience,

strong discipline, ability of

adaptation to new technologies and

innovations alongside its strong

political relations and cultural

proximity to the neighboring

countries, and its determination to

sustain coordination and cooperation

between public institutions and

private sector.

Turkish contractors have successfully

completed big and extensive

48 April/2019

milestone projects especially in the

Commonwealth of Independent

States, the Middle East and North

Africa in time.

Turkish Contactors have undertaken

46,2 billion US Dollars’ worth of

project value between the years

1972 and 2002, in 30-year time.

Since 2002, the international project

value has reached to 283 billion US

Dollars. The value of the projects

undertaken in the last 14 years is

86% of all projects. Similarly, while

annual project value was 2,9 billion

US Dollars in 2001, it reached to 30

billion US Dollars in 2012 and 2013.

Moreover, the number of projects

undertaken annually reached to 414

in 2013 and 336 in 2014, though it

was 208 in 2002. The improvement

is not only quantitative but also

qualitative. This can be extracted

from the change of average value of

the projects in years. The average

value of a project has increased from

22 million US Dollars up to 98

million US Dollars between 2002

and 2015.

This transformation indicates that

Turkish Contactors are now more

capable of carrying out larger and

more value-added projects such as

airports, subways, industrial plants,

natural gas and petroleum refineries,

highways and energy stations.

The achievements of Turkish

technical consultancy and

engineering firms are also highly

appreciated in the international

arena, thanks to their contemporary

visions and local know-how.

According to the list showing the 250

largest construction companies of

the world announced annually by the

international construction sector’s

leading magazine, Engineering

News Record (ENR), based on the

total value of projects undertaken in

the previous year on international

level, Turkish overseas contracting

companies were in the 2nd place

upon the number of national

companies and in the 9th place upon

the national overall revenue in the

list.

The government set its goal as to

increase the yearly value undertaken

projects by Turkish companies to 100

billion US Dollars in 2023.

Elenor Textile is to show

blackout fabrics!

Turkey is determined to repeat the success in home textile field in the

contract industry business as well. One of these companies, Elenor Textile

has produced a special blinding fabric for the contract business.

By inspiring from nature the

company produces easy

to combine products for

special projects and serves more

than thousand retailers and interior

decorators having a wide range of

fabrics especially developed for the

needs of hotels, businesses, homes

and hospitals besides tulle, and

background fabrics and blackout

fabrics. We conducted an interview

with Ömer Kinay and Hakan

Basabak general managers of the

firm on the eve of Proposte and

Evteks fairs.

Could we get some basic

information about your

company that was established

in 2008?

At the beginning we aimed at

producing extraordinary home

textiles now we have been serving

with our collections in stocked

cut and contract businesses. Our

cutting service is mostly directed

to export markets. We serve about

1300 retailers directly in Russia,

Serbia, Holland, Iran, Bulgaria

and America. We have storehouses

in Bulgaria and an office in Serbia

and we plan to have a storehouse in

Hungary and Croatia.

52 April/2019

On the other line, we produce

certified flame-resistant fabrics for

the needs of contract businesses and

deliver them direct from our stocks.

Our fabrics and tulle books are in

900 spots in Canada and in 300

spots in America in addition to

those nine different collection books

used in the country, in Europe

and in middle east countries. We

launched this sets of collection in

the latest Heimtextil and met with

great interest and orders. We want to

expand the coverage of the book that

we prepared for contract businesses

into other countries.

What do you want to say

about the characteristics of

your products, varieties, and

production capacities?

We can produce 80 thousand meters

for hotel, project and contract sector

and 30 thousand meters for cutting

segment. We use technical fabrics in

production and produce fabrics for

tulle drapery and for background.

There are antibacterial, stain-free

and water-repellant fabrics.

“We are ready to launch

our 100 percent effective

blackout fabrics in Evteks”

You said that you emphasize on

R&D in the production of products

addressing to contract businesses.

Will you explain more about your

activities in this field?

At the end of two years’ research and

development activities we produced

100% opaque fabric that is called

as blackout, which is now produced

only in the USA. We have made

some meetings in Heimtextil and

now we are ready to launch this in

Evteks fair.

Hakan Basabak and Ömer Kinay

Would you like to mention

some of the contract business

projects that your products

are used?

Recently, we supplied fabrics for a

400-room hotel in Mecca, Saudi

53

PROFILE

Arabia, a large facility of 11 blocks in Montenegro

and a hotel in Georgia in addition to some projects

in Moscow.

What are the targets of Elenor Textile in

brief?

Offering quality products for the right markets

is our major target. Our motto is to act as an

innovative and easy to reach company. Our target is

to build a world brand originating from Turkey.

What are the most popular colors and

patterns in your designs?

Our products are mostly made of natural and soft

color tones. Our collections are minimalist and not

alla Turca. We are in the side of naturalists, because

it is popular in the industry. We use natural mix

fibers, linens and cottons in home textile products.

Which countries are your export markets?

Which fairs do you participate in the

country and abroad?

We export our products to eastern block and

Balkan countries, Russia, Italy, America, Israel

and Greece, 40 countries in total. The fairs that

we participated in helped us to extend our export

markets. We participate in Evteks and Anfas Hotel

Equipment Fairs in the country and Heimtextile in

Germany. We consider participating in Proposte and

Maison&Objet in coming years.

What do you want to say on the position

of the contract textile in Turkey, one of

the active players of the industry?

The requirements of the sector are developing

gradually. The biggest problem is the lack of

demand for standards for the inflammableness. For

hospitals and official establishments this should be a

basic requirement per month.

We are highly successful in contract business field

as the whole country and we can be more popular in

international field. There are only 4 to 5 companies

especially focused on drapery production for

contract businesses and buyers in abroad but the

external buyers are not aware of the sources and

supply opportunities in Turkey. We have to repeat

our experiences and golden level of success in the

field of home textiles in the contracts business field

as well. This requires more efforts in promotion.

We, as Elenor, are working hard to establish a

world brand, this is a marathon run. But, we will be

successful by taking solid steps toward this end.

future trends

Proposte will continue its

vision of showcasing future

trends and triggering the

trade. With 2 new Turkish

exhibitors inside the Proposte

show area, there will be 6

Turkish brands this year in

total.

62 April/2019

Proposte opens at Villa Erba at

an earlier date, 15-17 April

2109., instead of its traditional

dates in early May. “Considering the

national and international calendar

of the various civil and religious

festivities”, says the Chairman, Mauro

Cavelli, “the upcoming edition of

Proposte should have been held in

late May, a date we considered too

far along for our market of reference.

This is why we chose to anticipate

the event to April, in the wake of the

Salone del Mobile. This means that

the famous event will close on Sunday

in Milan and the gates of Villa Erba

will open on the following Monday.

We believe that by placing the date

of our exhibition so close to that of

the Salone del Mobile we will make it

easier for our foreign visitors to attend

both events in a short time and on a

single trip”.

There will be 85 participating firms,

32 of which are Italian and 53 from

abroad. This fact, even more so now

than in past years, is an indicator

of the fair’s increasing acclaim at

international level. As in past years,

the exhibitor selection criteria are

demanding and apply only to high

profile collection producers. The

indispensable paradigm for showing

at Villa Erba is based on professional

ethics, commitment to research

and to experimentation in terms

of aesthetics and of technology,

and compliance with international

regulations regarding deontology

and sustainability. The exhibitors will

welcome visitors and clients from all

over the world.

Proposte is a global preview of

textile quality, and its search for

excellence among important textile

manufacturers worldwide proceeds

in 2019 with nine new admissions,

namely two Turkish businesses:

Akarca Tekstil (present at Cernobbio

in 2018 at the International

three British businesses: David

Walters Fabrics, Mallalieus Of

Rahmig & Partner GmbH; and last

but not least, for the first time ever at

Proposte, one Indian business: G.M.

Syntex Pvt Ltd.

Once again, but more significantly

so this year, the new galleries from

abroad are the living proof that

excellence in the world of furnishing

fabrics comes from all continents and

that quality and value are not just

a question of nationality but also of

substance, of reliability, of efficiency

and of creativity. With each new

edition, Proposte is becoming more

and more an international event, a

vital showcase for high-end fabric

and curtain manufacturers from all

over the world.

Please remember that admission

to the Fair is reserved for sector

operators working in the following

professional categories: Textile

editors, Upholstered furniture

manufacturers, Wholesalers,

Converters, Large-scale distribution

chains, Contract operators,

Journalists, Architects and

Designers.

For the fifth year running, in the

2019 edition the parallel exhibition

International Observatory also

will be held on the same days as

Proposte. The participating firms, all

from abroad, will exhibit in venues

close to Villa Erba -Sheraton Lake

Como Hotel, Spazio Como and

CernobbioShed -and well connected

to the Fair via shuttle bus service.

Operators will have direct access

using their Proposte badge or may

request accreditation at the front

desk. The International Observatory

We have exported approximately 40%

Our goal for 2019 is to increase this

ratio to 50%. We are rather strong

in Asia Pacific and CIS countries.

Our most important goal in 2019 is

utilizing wholesale opportunities in

Europe. We had serious initiatives

in this respect as of the beginning

of 2018 and we started to get results

as of the first quarter of 2019. We

Esra Batkın, General Manager

will gain acceleration in this channel

around midyear 2019. In addition,

the markets in US, China and Africa

are of primary importance for us. We

have an existing organization in the

US and it is growing stronger. We

expect our sales in Chinese market

to increase in midyear 2019 as a

PROFILE

What would you like to say

about the development,

trends and future of the

industrial kitchen sector in

the international arena?

There are a lot of players in the

industry and the competition in

advanced markets is now beyond

the price. It is based on the level

of technological development. In

particular, energy efficient and

source-saving products are in

demand. For this reason, our R&D

department follows technological

innovations closely and we put our

heart and soul in innovations which

would enable us to compete with

our rivals and also make an impact.

R&D is very important for us and

it has a share of 2% in our annual

budget.

We are the first company that

produced the combi steamer in

Turkey. With our Inosmart brand

ovens, we analyze the needs of

the industry in the best way and

strengthen our R&D activities

by paying attention to them. Our

BYF600 dishwashing machines with

a capacity of washing 6.000 dishes

per hour attracts great interest from

the professionals in the industry.

Finally, how would you

appraise the year?

2018 was quite successful and

busy. All sales units within our

company have surpassed their

targets and closed the year extremely

successfully. We hope this dynamism

will continue at the same level in

2019. Eating and drinking habits

change every passing day and we

develop ourselves to be able to

compete with Europe. The best

cuisines in Europe today are French,

Italian and Turkish cuisines. We

reflect our skills in the kitchen on

our business and offer technological

solutions to kitchen professional all

ARCHITECTURE

Traditional motifs

meet modern styles

in Turkish bath and

sauna designs

‘Hygge’ breeze from Nordic countries

is introducing a way of thinking which

we can embrace to make ourselves

happy by creating warm and intimate

environments in cold winter days. Baths

welcoming us at the end of a hectic

work day where we can rest and purify

our soul have, over the time, started to

serve also as modern SPAs. Turkish

baths on the other hand which have had

a significant place in our culture since

ancient times are now becoming part

of our houses. Eda Tahmaz, founder

of EDDA Architecture, who adopts a

natural and flowing design approach

in the housing projects she realises,

draws attention to an increasing trend

observed in the last years, indicating

that Turkish bath and sauna designs

that we are used to seeing in hotels can

now also be seen in housing projects.

In Turkish baths and saunas which

we use for purification and relaxation

purposes in our culture, traditional

motifs meet modern patterns forming

a unique style. Emphasising the rise

in use of wood colours and textures

in these spaces of which simplicity

is a predominant feature, Tahmaz

explains her suggestions for natural

materials that can be used, the latest

technological developments and the

points which should be paid attention to

by homeowners.

Eda Tahmaz

76 April/2019

Having designed

Turkish baths and

saunas with different

concepts in Tuzla Villas

which received many

awards in international

platforms, Founder of

EDDA Architecture,

interior architect Eda

Tahmaz reviews the

colour, material and

accessory trends of the

year and talks about

the particularities that

homeowners should

pay attention in Turkish

bath and sauna designs.

77

ARCHITECTURE

2019 is bringing about simplicity,

fine details and natural textures in

Turkish bath and sauna designs. The

harmony between the forms, volumes

and materials help create a simple and

beautiful appearance together with fine

metal pieces and elegant marble details.

The popular trend is wood colours and

textures whilst white-wood transitions

will be highly preferred. Indicating

that copper red and pink tones and

earth colour tones are on the rise,

Tahmaz goes on to say that a mystic

and comfortable environment can be

created also with the contribution of

lighting, by obtaining different textures

and patterns using natural marble in

tones of grey, beige and blue in turn.

Dore golden tones and black and white

metals are also some of the novelties that

we will be seeing this year.

Materials to be used in sauna designs

should be selected from among products

which are heat and water - resistant,

impact-resistant and compliant with

hygiene conditions. Suggesting that

materials such as Finnish pine wood

and American cedar wood would

give good results in ceiling and wall

coverings, Tahmaz is of the opinion

that whilst materials made of African

abachi and ayous wood can be used

for floor coverings and sitting groups,

it is nearly impossible to use anything

but natural marble textures for Turkish

bath designs.

The local style introduced to Turkish

baths and saunas by traditional motifs

which, when combined with modern

design and fine details, can create

elegant and beautiful textures, can

be further supported with decorative

elements. Accessories such as wooden

sauna ladles, copper or wooden sauna

buckets, wooden sauna pillows, sauna

vents, candleholders for saunas, sauna

clock if needed, sauna stone, and

thermometer and hygrometer are some

of the materials to choose from.

Explaining that in today’s world,

Turkish baths and saunas are heated,

ventilated and illuminated with

automation systems used in heating,

ventilation and lighting systems, and

have become much more practical and

easy to use, Tahmaz further pointed

78 April/2019

out that as a result of technological

developments, more pleasant and

functional designs are realized with the

production of materials which are heat

and water-resistant in hot and humid

spaces and easy-to-clean.

Tahmaz believes that Turkish baths

and saunas have a unique status, which

feature is hidden in countless details

inside these venues and therefore each

detail should be planned meticulously

and designs should be created with

innovative and different styles but yet

also reflecting the traditional Turkish

bath culture; Tahmaz then goes on to

summarise their approach at EDDA

Architecture:

“In our Turkish bath and sauna

designs we make by also taking into

consideration the requests of the users,

we prefer materials that are heat and

water-resistant, impact-resistant and

compliant to conditions of hygiene.

We strive to establish an aesthetic and

holistic connection between the old

and the new by using traditional motifs

together with fine and elegant details

and accessories. In our Turkish bath

and sauna designs, we consider every

detail, from waterproofing of the venue

to heating of the marbles, the selection

of marbles and tiles to be used, the

ceiling production and the lighting to

be used, and we combine functionality

with aesthetics, breathing life into

traditional values."

Contemporary

interpretation of

clinical design by

Iglo Architects

Iglo Architects, an Istanbul based design studio, designed the new clinic of

Plastic Surgeon Dr. İlker Apaydın. The design studio changes the standard

clinical perception at the new clinic, with the use of different colors together

with fluid forms.

An affordable and impressive design

from Iglo Architects created by

rational solutions. Plastic Surgeon

Clinic of Dr. Apaydin designed by

Iglo Architects is an effective and

colourful way to re-interpret an

existing plan to the clinic; is located

in a 250 square meter apartment

in Terrace Fulya, Istanbul. This

impressive interior space was

achieved just by the colouring on the

walls, the graphical arrangements on

the carpets and the design of several

furniture and illumination elements.

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Apaydin who

founded the clinic, requested to the

clinic has a style which reflects his

personality and the job he is doing.

The existing plan of the flat has

4 rooms and a lobby was suitable

to function as a plastic surgery

clinic without any changes on the

80 April/2019

Esen Akyar Karoglu

Zafer Karoglu

plan. Operation room, consultation

room, accounting and archives were

designed without changing the plan.

The clinic which would serve

clientele who value aesthetics should

not be designed with an ordinary

approach. The clinic should have an

original, modern and smart design

to reflect the taste of its clients and

make them feel safe, secure and

confident.

First task to do was to start a war

against light blue and white which

are standard surgery colors. Saying

’’Why not black?’’ Iglo Architests

chose dark gray to be used as the

main color from ceiling to floor.

On the ceiling and wall crossings

they used a fluid form which implies

the heartbeat. This graphical effect

defined the style of the furniture as

well. As no structural elements such

as suspended ceilings were desired,

ceiling and illumination details

were both solved by using specially

designed stretch ceiling lighting

elements.

The only reason of the clinic's design

being that impressive and special

is the painting on the wall, graphic

design of the carpet on the ground

and furniture and the lighting

design. Economic and impressive

design by clever solutions…

the corridor due to the structural

94 April/2019

Mehmet Hasırcı and Ismail Karalar

Can you tell us about the

kind of carpets you produce?

With our years of experience, we

have a very safe place in the carpet

industry where competition is very

harsh. We have production lines of

Acrylic, shaggy, pp Heatset, frize,

polyester, wall-to-wall and many

other types of carpet production.

Since our establishment, we

have been serving our local and

international customers with a wide

range of products.

What theme did you depart

with in your new collection?

To what extent are the

innovations in the world of

furniture and decoration

affecting the trends in the

carpet?

We develop our collections by

following the new fashion trends. In

line with this, we carry out our R &

D activities together with our R &

D team. Innovations in the world of

furniture and decoration affect the

trends in the carpet one hundred

percent and therefore we follow the

trends.

because of our wide range of colours

and products.

How is the export breakdown

of these varieties? How many

countries do you have exports

to?

80% of our production is exported

and 20% is for domestic market.

We have exports to more than 40

countries.

When we look at the general

carpet export figures, we see

a decline last year. How do

you interpret this? When you

consider your company in

particular, how do the figures

proceed compared to the

previous year?

In general, when we evaluate the

economic conditions of the countries

in which we export to, the conditions

are really becoming more difficult

and this situation reflects negatively

to our sales accordingly. However,

with our efforts as a team and with

fairs we have joined, we are trying to

skip this situation healthy by adding

new markets to our organization.

When we consider our company

in particular, we do not have any

changes in the figures. We aim to

increase our sales for this year.

What are your expectations

for 2019? Is there a new

investment or project on your

agenda?

We observe that the general opinion

for 2019 is negative. Our expectation

is that 2019 will be a good year. At

the end of 2019 and at the beginning

of 2020, our new machinery and

factory investments will continue.

but also mentally and

emotionally.

It is the reformist perspective of

Dr. Murat Akdogan, who is the

chairperson of MYC Partners,

which extends the success story to

Vitalica Wellness. He suffered from

severe brain and kidney failure in

early 1990s and due to the lack of

facilities in Turkey at the time, he

had to go abroad seeking the proper

treatment for his disease. There has

been 14 cases diagnosed all around

the world and only one survived and

it is Akdogan, thanks to modern

medicine.

He was deeply influenced by his

experience and decided to set up

Ethica and Estethica. He has

adopted the principle of “prevent

rather than cure” and now he is

shifting to the concept of “Preventive

Hospital Model” for sustainability

reasons. So, he developed the

wellness concept of integration of the

modern and traditional medicine,

in which European, Far Eastern,

Chinese and Indian medicinal

approaches are melted in one pot

and offered in its best form. All

the services are offered in Vitalica

Wellness Clinic in Bodrum.

A unique holistic wellness program

has been developed by the

experienced doctors in their fields,

experiences of modern medicine of

Ethica and Estethica hospitals,both

modern and traditional medicine,

and created Vitalica Wellness

programs. All the treatments in

Vitalica Welness are well beyond the

ordinary.

Individualized detoxification

programs coupled with the menus

composed of the organic vegetables

and fruits from the gardens of

Vitalica Wellness will give guests

great opportunity to rejuvenate and

revitalize while they detox their

minds with signature rituals.

Additionally, Vitalica Wellness

makes a considerable difference

in the beauty, anti-aging and

esthetic treatments, holistic

clinical treatments administered by

experienced doctors with modern

medical equipment.

Vitalica Wellness opens its doors

at LUX* Bodrum Resort &

Residences, where all the natural

beauty of the forests and Aegean Sea

meet the energizing Sun.
