• 4 December 2005: Judge Midhat Al-Mahmoud, President of the High Judicial Council,<br />

survived a suicide bomb attack against his home. 1001<br />

• 8 November 2005: Gunmen opened fire on a car carrying two lawyers defending<br />

Saddam Hussein’s half-brother Barzan Ibrahim Al-Tikriti and former Vice President<br />

Taha Yassin Ramadan, in the Dujail trial. Adel Al-Zubeidi was killed and Thamer<br />

Hamoud Al-Khuzaie was wounded in the incident. 1002<br />

• 20 October 2005: A day after the start of the Dujail trial, in which former President<br />

Saddam Hussein and seven others stand accused of the killing of 148 Shi’ites, Defence<br />

Attorney Saadun Janabi was murdered in Baghdad. 1003<br />

• 17 August 2005: Jasim Waheeb, an investigative judge at the Appellate Court of Al-<br />

Karkh, and his driver were shot to death in Baghdad’s Al-Doura neighbourhood. 1004<br />

• 17 June 2005: A judge and his driver were killed in Mosul City by unknown<br />

gunmen. 1005<br />

• 3 March 2005: Judge Barawiz Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Merani and lawyer, Aryan<br />

Mahmoud Al-Merani, both working with the Iraqi High Tribunal tasked to try Saddam<br />

Hussein and former members of his government, were killed by gunmen outside their<br />

home in Adhamiya. The killings came one day after the court issued referrals for five<br />

former regime members for crimes against humanity. It is possible that the killings were<br />

related to the Kurdish ethnicity of the victims. 1006<br />

• 2 March 2005: A criminal court judge involved in human rights cases was shot dead in<br />

front of his house. His lawyer brother was also killed. 1007<br />

• 26 January 2005: Senior judge Qais Hashim Shameri and his driver were killed by<br />

gunmen. Jaish Ansar Al-Sunna claimed responsibility in a Web posting, calling the<br />

judge “one of the heads of infidelity and apostasy of the new Iraqi government”. 1008<br />
