Annex V: Attacks on Professors, Teachers and Students<br />

The following incidents have been reported since April 2006:<br />

• 13 February 2007: Up to 16 people are reported to have been killed and 27 wounded<br />

after a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a van near the College of Economic<br />

Sciences in Baghdad. 945<br />

• 1 February 2007: Gunmen broke into the Physical Education College of Diyala in<br />

Baqouba and killed the Dean, Walhan Hamed Al-Rubaie. 946<br />

• 29 January 2007: A law student, Ali Abdul-Mutalib Al-Hashimi, and three professors,<br />

Adnan Al-Abid, Abdel Muttaleb Al-Hashemi and Amer Al-Qaissi were abducted from<br />

Nahrein University in Baghdad as they were leaving the university in the Khadimiyah<br />

District. Their bodies were found in Baghdad’s central morgue three days later. 947<br />

• 23 January 2007: Shi’ite professor and economist Diya Al-Meqoter was shot dead in<br />

Baghdad’s Adhamiya neighbourhood. He was widely known for his programme on<br />

Sharqiya television channel during which he interviewed a group of poor people who<br />

presented their ideas for starting a small business. He was teaching economics at the Al-<br />

Mustansiriya University and also headed the Consumer Association. 948<br />

• 22 January 2007: Gunmen killed a female teacher on her way to work at a girls’ school<br />

in the mainly Sunni neighbourhood of Khadra in western Baghdad. 949<br />

• 17 January 2007: At least 70 people, including students and teachers, were killed and<br />

more than 170 others injured as a suicide bomber and a car bomb exploded at the<br />

entrance of Al-Mustansiriya University in east Baghdad. 950<br />

• 21 December 2006: Dr. Muntather Mohammed Al-Hamadani, the Assistant Dean at the<br />

Faculty of Law at Al-Mustansiriya University and Dr. Ali Jassam, were assassinated by<br />

unknown gunmen in Al-Slaikh area.<br />

• 11 December 2006: Gunmen kidnapped five teachers of one primary school near Al-<br />

Dijeel village. 951<br />

• 5 December 2006: Professor Abdul Hameed Al-Harith, the head of the Psychological<br />

and Educational Studies Office in Baghdad University, was killed in central Baghdad<br />

on his way to work. 952<br />
