Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre:
The malnutrition of children especially of below 2 years has been a one of major reasons of
death of children. To reducing the death of childen, Bihar government has planned to
establish nutritional rehabilitation centre in each district. The details of formation of NRC and
its services are as under:
Steps For Operationalization of NRC
- Selection of staff for NRC by NGO
- Training of NRC staff
- Orientation of Medical officers, ANMs,
AWW, ASHA of the focused block For
Pre NRC, NRC and Post NRC
components
- Monthly reporting to SHSB
- Monitoring of NRC Activities
- Monthly Review Meeting at district
level with CS, DPO, DPC, Pediatrician,
MOIC, CDPO of focused blocks and
NGO representatives
- Monthly meeting review at state level
- Funding for NRC in PIP
- Selection of NGOs for NRC
- Selection of a nodal officer for NRC (
dpc)
- Selection of site for NRC in each district
- Orientation of District Nodal Officer
along-with partner NGO
- Planning meeting at DHS (with Nodal
Officer and NGO)
- Co-ordination meeting between NGO,
DHS, DPO office for defining roles and
responsibilities and finalization of
focused block.
- Establishment of the NRC by NGO
(funding as per PIP by DHS)
Services at NRC
- Mothers receive Rs 70/day- wage
compensation –Rs. 1470 total amount on
discharge after 21 days
- Mothers engaged in cooking, cleaning,
feeding…
- Sattu and recipe demos live preparations
as part of counseling
- Hygiene given special focus: case by
case basis
- Referral if needed for major
complications
- After treatment from referral –child
readmitted
- Process facilitated by
NAM/AWW/ASHA
- Child identified by ANM as per criteria
from the shortlisted underweight children
by AWW/ASHA
- Mother motivated by ANM/ASHA to
admit the Child at NRC
- ASHA‟s responsibility to bring the child
at NRC
- ASHA receives incentives of Rs 100 per
child on discharge of child
- Child admitted in NRC for 21 days.
- Transportation cost for follow-up
proposed in 2011-12 PIP
In Saran district, the NRC was formed in September, 2011 and has provided its services to 19
children.
