In 2016 our
founder
realized during
his travels
to Gulu that
there was no
coffee shop
that welcomed
locals and
foreigners alike.
Coffee or Café
culture was
considered
foreign and a
mzungu culture
unlike in other
places.
Our Story
O Café Gulu was born out of the desire to fix the problem of the lack
of a coffee shop that would welcome everyone and teach the locals to
appreciate the consumption of Coffee.
O Café Gulu is a locally owned and operated business that was
started in 2017 to offer employment opportunities to some amazing
young men and women from Northern Uganda. We decided that
we will find people with the right attitude and polish them to offer
customer services similar to those enjoyed in Kampala. Great staff
such as Tommy, Richard, Chef Cathy, Mercy, Janet, etc are some of the
people who have touched people in different ways and we are very
proud of them.
Great concepts such as Silent Disco, Open Mic Event and Festival that
has raised the entertainment bar was born from O Café Gulu.
O Café Gulu doesn’t want unhealthy competition with any other
similar business in Gulu but our customers have insisted on Trip
Advisor that we are #TheBestCafeInGulu. We don’t take their
feedback for granted and hope to remain the market leader for many
years to come.
Did you know that the ‘O’ in our name comes from our parent
company Opolacen Limited? Opolacen loosely translated in Acholi
means, ‘to be late’. Rather than call this business Opolacen Café which
is a tongue twister, we just kept it short and sweet as O Café.
What seems impossible in the beginning has been possible because
of your patronage and we will not get tired to say, ‘wapwoyo matek!’
