“...self-expression

through educational

initiatives”

JMG Productions, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit

production company in the Washington, DC area

whose organizational mission is to address societal

challenges facing children and young adults by

providing a forum for their self-expression through

educational initiatives and various forms of Mass

Media and Film. Since 1997, JMG has been

training, transforming and empowering the lives

of underserved, court-involved, and incarcerated

youth, as well as all youth in public and private

schools, through structured and skilled based

diversion programs, creative arts programs, and

workforce development programs.

With an increasing number of hate crimes, bullying

and violence related issues nationwide, youth

participants of JMG Productions, Inc., will create

a special documentary for the general public

that will address hate, bullying and violence. The

documentary will help people to cope through

the fear and to learn about instrumental measures

that can insure safety and lives being saved.

Great emphasis will also be placed on making the

documentary available to schools, libraries and

youth agencies nationwide.

Understanding

Your Potential

By Myles Munroe

UThe wealthiest spot on the planet is not the oil fields

of Kuwait, Iraq or South Africa. Neither is it the gold

and diamond mines of South Africa, the uranium

mines of the Soviet Union or the silver mines of

Africa. Though it may surprise you, the richest

deposits on our planet lie just a few blocks from

your house.

They rest in your local cemetery or graveyard.

Buried beneath the soil within the walls of those

sacred grounds are….

•Dreams that never came to pass,

•Songs that were never sung,

•Books that were never written,

•Paintings that never filled a canvas,

•Ideas that were never shared,

•Visions that never became reality,

•Inventions that were never designed,

•Purposes that were never fulfilled, and…

•Plans that never went beyond the drawing board

of the mind.

Our graveyards are filled with potential that

remained potential. What a tragedy!

There have been 247 homicides in the Washington,

DC region (DC, Maryland and Virginia) during

2018, with 144 homicides (as of November 8, 2018)

having occurred in Washington, DC. More than

half of the homicide victims are young people

under the age of nineteen (19), as reported by a

News4 analysis of Metropolitan Police Department

Data. Stories from these data show a17-yearold

boy with special needs who died after being

attacked by three other students in his classroom

for not letting them use his cell phone, to a15-yearold,

shot as he walked home from school, and

a 10 year-old girl gunned down in her own front

yard as she went to get a treat from the ice cream

truck. These are just some of the few devastating

stories involving bullying and violence, with an end

result of senseless tragedies that continue to effect

communities nationwide at an alarming rate.

IThe

Issue

Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department

Patrol Chief Robert Contee said access to guns

combined with the root causes of violence

including untreated mental health issues, are

leading to the deaths of young people. “In a lot

of these cases, we have young people who are

unable to resolve conflict. When you add a gun

to that, you have a deadly situation.”

JMG youth participants (known as Cohorts)

receive extensive training on creating, writing and

producing Public Service Announcements (PSA’s),

documentary filmmaking, and other production

content on subject matters that focus on reducing

hate, bullying, violence, and recidivism. Each

cohort is issued an individual camera and

equipment accessories to help master the

learning process.

Public speaking, writing, photography,

videography, producing, directing, editing, audio,

lighting and graphic design are some of the

many components that the youth will learn in the

program, and become proficient in the various

skills over time. Cohorts will also have opportunities

to experience being in front of the camera, as

well as behind the camera, as they work to put

together their PSA’s and documentary film.

NThe

Need

Professional development and vocational training

within the media-broadcasting and film industry

will also be provided to create opportunities

for youth who can work as interns on various

entertainment production sets from television, film,

music and theatrical venues. Such programming

will allow these youth from all walks of life, to

learn about and share what they learned from

various subject matters to other youth as one way

to help prevent hate crimes,

bullying, and violence, while

promoting anti-bully and

violence prevention initiatives

to deter criminal behavior. For

example, having ongoing youth

violence prevention discussions,

peer-to-peer interventions,

anti-bully initiatives, and group

therapy sessions are needed as

alternatives to the status quo.

“Each cohort is issued an

individual camera and

equipment accessories

to help master the

learning process.”

At the end of the 10-month

training program, cohorts will

showcase their documentary

film, and PSA during a private

screening before distinguished

industry professionals, who

have opportunities to provide

feedback on students’ finished

work and suggestions for future

endeavors. Families of the

youth, as well as fellow peers,

teachers, community leaders,

and participants from the

documentary and PSA will also

be on hand for the preview and

follow-up discussions.

The

IImpact

Since 1997, JMG Productions, Inc. has provided a

wealth of rich experiences for youth participating

in the non-for-profit program. The most rewarding

impact that the JMG program has had on its

cohorts of youth is helping them to become

agents of change for their communities, families

and most importantly, for themselves. For

example, engagement and group participation

has been very strong which has resulted in 100% of

cohorts mastering an overall understanding of the

fundamentals of television and video production

and documentary filmmaking. These activities

have helped to build participants self-efficacy

such that eighty percent (80%) are now in college,

five percent (5%) are pursuing military careers and

five percent (5%) are now enrolled in vocational

training programs and pursuing entrepreneurship

options. Ten (10%) of the remaining cohorts of high

school juniors are currently applying to college for

acceptance in fall of 2020.

Participants that complete the JMG training

program leave ready for the workforce in

many entry-level positions as interns and

production assistants. A few students have

exemplified tremendous advanced proficiency

in photojournalism and documentary filmmaking.

This has resulted in work opportunities through JMG

Productions. Advanced participants serve as

participating in the program

through a peer-to-peer model

approach. Additionally, JMG’s

student teachers have also

been a part of JMG’s Youth

Press Corps team, where

they travel with JMG to film

special events. Such events

included the 2016 Presidential

Inauguration, Cherry Blossom

Festival-collaboration between

Washington, DC and Japan,

corporate company private

events, Mothers of Professional

Conference (August 2018,

Washington, DC); EAT Brand

OThrough its anti-bullying, violence prevention

campaign, JMG will train a diverse group of

15 community youth from the greater Washington,

DC Region on television and video production

and documentary filmmaking. The youth will

work together as a cohort team to create,

write, produce and direct a short documentary

film, with a PSA included to address the critical

issue of hate, bullying and violence. A multitalented

writer, actor, producer, and director (Otis

Winston) will work with the cohorts on story-telling

concepts; acting; writing; directing; and most

importantly, helping to build their self-confidence

for life for overcoming fears, and insecurities,

while contributing to reducing hate, bullying and

violence. To encourage buy-in and retention,

JMG will provide an incentive for students to

attend an NBA All-Star Game in February 2019.

The

Opportunity

In addition, cohorts will have opportunities to hone

their production skills, and improve on what they

already know. During pre-arranged interviews,

cohorts will interview some of the NBA players

about their stance on hate, bullying and the

widespread violence unfolding in our country,

and get their viewpoints, as well as a message of

hope and encouragement for youth nationwide.

The goal is for youth to obtain encouragement

and inspiration to help them respond in nonviolent

ways to the difficult times they face on a daily

basis. As a finished product, cohorts will take

part editing and producing the information into

a documentary film that will premiere through

multiple outlets in September 2019.

This specialized program

incorporates the six domains

of Positive Youth Justice, Work,

Relationship, Health, Education,

Community and Creativity.

The resulting outcome of

this unique experience is to

prepare youth to be productive

citizens as well as examine

how to navigate through life’s

societal challenges. The goal

is to provide an environment

for youth to cope and prevail

in the face of seemingly

unfavorable odds; thus, instilling

self-worth and a strong sense of

responsibility for their future.
