5 DIY PEST CONTROL TIPS
These tips can help you minimize
the number of bugs and pests you
encounter in and around your home.
1. Seal Gaps
Cracks and gaps in your home's
foundation are easy entryways for
critters. Use compound cement or caulk
to fill the cracks, holes and gaps. It is
also recommended to use fine steel wool
around any exterior gaps larger than the
size of your thumb to keep out mice. Pay
attention to cracks in the foundation,
roof, door frames, windows, utility
pipes, and tv/cable wires, which could
all contain small cracks which pest can
squeeze through to get inside your home.
2. Trim Vegetation
Vegetation like bushes and shrubs can
become a highway for insects like ants
and roaches. Tree limbs that are allowed
to over hang the structure can become
a hazard for carpenter ants and roaches,
while vines that are allowed to grow up
the structure are highways for carpenter
ants, various species of black ants, and
termites. Maintain a minimum clearance
of 12 inches between the structure and
vegetation. Spraying insecticide is a good
line of defense against insects, as it will
stop ants, box-elder bugs, Asian lady
beetles, stink bugs, bed bugs and other
invasive pests.
3. Replace Rotten Wood
Paint that is beginning to peel or crack
is a sign that moisture has begun to
intrude your wood. Try to figure out
the source of the moisture issue,
then scrape and repaint the area with
the proper exterior grade paint. If
the wood has begun to show signs
of decay, replace it. Soft wood can
become a breeding ground and habitat
for carpenter ants and termites.
4. Avoid standing water
To keep insects like ants, roaches, and
mosquitoes from breeding at faster
rates, empty wheel barrows, throw
away those black plastic planters your
plants arrived in, and refresh water in
bird baths every few days.
5. Maintain Garbage and Clutter
During the next several months, make
sure you seal all waste as air tight as
possible and take the trash bin to the
curb each week. If you compost, make
sure your compost bin is as far away
from the house as possible. Clean
debris from your yard and also clean
under decks, porches, basements and
behind shutters. Dust mites and bed
bugs like to live in close proximity to
you. These pests love to find shelter
in your bed, bedding, and clothing.
That’s why it is so important for you
to wash clothing, bed sheets, blankets,
quilts, towels, and other clothes three
to four times per month to eliminate
and reduce bed bugs and dust mites in
your home.
The landlord will only do TWO (2) pest treatments a year
(6 months apart). After that, it is the tenant's responsibility.

Water is Precious. Use it wisely.
Water is one of the most important, if
not the most important, resource that
humans use. In Chicago the climate
varies greatly by location and time
of year, and at times water might be
scarce. Conserving water at home not
only helps save this precious resource,
but also helps the society save money.
Here are 5 simple ways to save water:
1. Fix leaky faucets, toilets,
appliances and sprinklers. Leaks
vary in amount, but they can account
for a lot of wasted water over time.
2. Turn off the water when
brushing your teeth. According
to the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), this simple act may
save more than 200 gallons of water
in a single month.
3. Use less water when doing
laundry. Your washing machine can
swallow gallons of water, so make
sure you use it wisely. Wait until you
have enough clothing for a full load of
laundry before starting the washer.
If you need to wash a small load
separately, adjust the water level on
your machine accordingly.
4. Take a shower instead of a
bath, and take shorter showers.
As reported by the EPA, if you shower
for five minutes or less you will use
about 10 to 15 gallons of water.
Compare that number with baths,
which use up to 70 gallons of water. If
you do take a bath, try reusing some
of the water in your garden.
5. Purchase water-efficient
faucets, laundry washers,
toilets and dishwashers. If you
have the means to purchase these
yourself or are eligible for a program
that will help you, purchasing waterand
energy-efficient appliances can
save you not only on your water bill,
but also on your electricity bill.
