A COVID-19 survivor

shares her painful

journey to recovery

dumani moy0

“COVID-19 is so painful that

I do not wish anyone to get

it,” said coronavirus survivor

Khaya Mgodleni. Mgodleni

detailed her painful journey to

recovery from what she described

as a horrible disease that can

have devastating effects, but can

nevertheless be beaten.

For Mgodleni, who works as a

grade seven teacher at a local

school in Cosmo City, the worst

symptoms that she experienced

were a tight chest, back pains and

blood clotting.

“It started as flu until I got some

severe pain in my back,” she said.

“I felt like something was pressing

down my chest, and it was very

difficult to breathe. Sometimes

I felt like I will never wake up

from my bed. It was a very painful

experience.” When she was

confirmed positive, she said, her

school closed in order to curb the

spread of the virus.

“I never thought I would be

infected with COVID-19 because I

was complying with the lockdown

regulations and my temperature

was always low. When I tested

positive, I thought it was the end

of the world. My husband and I

self-isolated in our bedroom while

my husband, who thankfully never

contracted the virus, helped me

with steaming, using Umhlonyane

herbs.”

Mgodleni and her family have

since been adhering to all the

lockdown rules,- following hygiene

protocols at home to help prevent

others from contracting the

disease. Mgodleni said she was

grateful to be able to tell her story

and inspire others to defeat the

virus.

“My family members and

colleagues were very supportive

and they prayed for me from

the day I was admitted to the

hospital,” she said.The virus has

shaped my life; I now appreciate

every moment God gives me. I feel

like I am a conqueror.”

Mgodleni has been involved in

many youth development projects

in Cosmo City and Western Cape,

mainly focusing on theatre and

drama. In 2005, Old Mutual and

SABC2 awarded her for being the

community builder of the year. In

the same year, she traveled to the

USA representing Western Cape

Department of Education in a

cultural exchange.

RULLDTA rebuilds

burnt shacks in Diepsloot

dumani moyo

dumanim@nsabasi-publishing.co.za

“I had nowhere to sleep for

almost a week after my

shack burnt down,” said

Diepsloot resident Nomcebo

Mkhize. “Today I am thankful

to RULLDTA for rebuilding my

home. It had been really difficult

for us.”

Randburg United Local and Long

Distance Transport Association

(RULLDTA) have been assisting

shack fire victims in Diepsloot

community since July.

They rebuilt seven shacks in

Diepsloot’s extension 11, according

to RULLDTA Women’s League

chairperson Phindile Shabangu.

“When one shack gets burnt, more

shacks automatically catch fire,”

she said, “the reason being that

the shacks are too close to each

other in the informal settlement.

However, we managed to leave

more space between the shacks

when we rebuilt them. This will

also help the residents to maintain

social distancing, reducing the

spread of COVID-19.

“It is our duty to give back to

the community,” Shabangu said.

“We will continue helping our

communities especially during

lockdown. People should also

learn to take care of themselves

especially during winter when

more shacks get burnt.”

At RULLDTA, Shabangu said,

they aim to provide help to all

the communities in which they

operate.

As the country continues to

celebrate women’s month,

Shabangu said, it is sad that

women in the taxi industry are

heavily affected by COVID-19.

“Most women in this industry are

widows so it is not easy for them to

survive,” she noted.

“I think the government should

also consider the challenges faced

by women in the transport sector.

This is a global issue and it hits

hard on women in business. As

RULLDTA Women’s League, we

appeal to the communities to fight

against Gender Based Violence

(GBV).”

Zithini, mfana wami Jojo?

Ngigrand, Grootman zikhiphani?

NtSharp, so this is Woman’s Month

chief and you know what that

means right? when they say

stay home.

Yebo Grootman, it means that

we all need to not only respect

our women but appreciate them.

Ja, mfana wami Jojo that

why mina nawe sizwana kanje.

Yebo Grootman you do know

the saying Wathinta umfazi,

14 families homeless after shacks gutted by fire in Zandspruit

dumani moyo

dumanim@nsabasi-publishing.co.za

A

fire in Zandspruit’s extension 16

gutted the shacks of 14 families on

23 August 2020, leaving the families

homeless. A male culprit caused the

fire by leaving a candle unattended when he

came home drunk past midnight.

The culprit was rushed to hospital with

severe burns on his body. No one died in the

inferno. The fire quickly spread from the

culprit’s shack to six more shacks. Residents

used buckets of water to put out the fire.

“The families lost everything,” said Economic

Freedom Fighters (EFF) PR Councillor

Karabo Ndini. “The sad thing is that the

fire was started by someone under the

influence of alcohol. Unfortunately, he

was also injured, and quickly rushed to

the hospital. We as the EFF are strongly

discouraging the President’s decision to

uplift the ban of alcohol. Many people have

now been affected by the actions of a person

under the influence of alcohol.” Ndini said

EEF is appealing for donations to assist the

unfortunate families.

“We are still trying to find more help for

them through social media,” she said. “We

are thankful for the donations from Disaster

Management. Mmc of Social Development

Cllr Mgcina was informed, and she sent

social workers to assist those who lost

their identity documents. According to the

victims, Ward 114 councillor Victor Mafinya

promised to donate 20 round poles.”

Police have arrested a 48-

year- old-man for allegedly

shooting one man dead the

evening of 15 August 2020

in Diepsloot.

A bullet also hit and injured

a 13-year-old boy, police said.

Reasons for the shooting are still

unknown, according to Diepsloot

police spokesperson Captain

Tinyiko Mathebula.

“An eyewitness, who was with

the deceased on that fateful

night, told the police that two

armed men approached them

and suddenly opened fire on

the deceased without saying any

word,” Captain Mathebula said.

“The eyewitness further alleges

that as he ran away from the

scene, he recognized one suspect,”

Mathebula said. “The suspect

chased him while firing shots at

him but he escaped unscathed.

When the eyewitness returned

to the scene of the shooting, he

found the deceased lying in a pool

of blood with multiple gunshots to

his head. The victim was declared

dead by emergency personnel on

the scene.”

After the eyewitness provided the

police with information about the

suspect’s whereabouts, Mathebula

said, police wasted no time acting

on the information,resulting in the

suspect’s arrest.

“The second suspect is still at large

and police request assistance with

information that can lead to the

arrest of this suspect. Anyone with

information can contact Diepsloot

police at 011 367 6300 or contact

Crime Stop number: 08600 10111.

Investigations are still underway,”

the Captain said.

Captain Mathebula said that they

are working hard to combat crime

in the communities as the country

enters level 2 lockdown.

In another development, police

arrested a 27-year-old woman on 19

August for allegedly assaulting six

children with an electric cord for

stealing her laundry detergents.

The suspect reportedly whipped

the children with the cord several

times after they had played with

her Sta-Soft.

“We understand that the suspect

locked the kids in a room,

instructed them to undress and

whipped them with the cord,” said

Mathebula. “The victims sustained

injuries on their bodies. We would

like to encourage parents not to

take the law into their own hands.

All cases of child abuse must be

reported to the police. The police

are strongly condemning child

abuse.”

The suspect has been charged

and will appear in the Randburg

magistrate court. Crime Prevention

members continue to do their

best to reduce house robberies

and crime in Diepsloot, captain

Mathebula said.

SASSA CEO Totsie Memela

Change your SASSA grant

payment method next week

Tuesday, August 25, 2020

SASSA will reopen its system

for approved applicants

to change their preferred

method of payment for the

special COVID-19 Social Relief of

Distress Grant (SRD).

SASSA CEO Totsie Memela

announced that the window

period for preferred method of

payment is scheduled for Monday,

31 August 2020 to Sunday, 06

September 2020, 24 hours a day.

“During this period, beneficiaries

can change from receiving

their grants at the post office

to receiving them through their

personal bank accounts. They

may also change from one bank to

another if they prefer to,” Memela

said on Tuesday.

Approved beneficiaries of the

grant can change their payment

method by visiting https://srd.

sassa.gov.za during this period.

This development is an effort

to address challenges some

beneficiaries have experienced in

trying to access their special relief

grant from the Post Offices.

She said it is important for

beneficiaries to understand that

they should not go to the Post

Office before they have received

the SMS notification that says

funds are available.

“The SMS notification is used

to limit the numbers of people

reporting to a Post Office on a

particular day and also to ensure

that sufficient cash is available,”

Memela said.

When choosing a bank account,

Memela said beneficiaries should

ensure the account is in their name.

SASSA cannot pay money for one

person into an account held by

another or if the bank account is

closed.

“The payment process is delayed if

money is sent to a closed account, as

SASSA has to wait for the funds to

be returned before sending it to the

Post Office for collection. Clients

who update their details are advised

to ensure that their information

is captured correctly to avoid any

further delays,” Memela explained.

The payment of the COVID-19

grant is quicker if paid into a bank

account, and applicants without

bank accounts are encouraged

therefore to open accounts.

“There are many entry level,

inexpensive options on the market

– some of which can be opened

online. Clients who have just been

approved for the relief grant by

SASSA and have received an SMS to

upload and verify their bank details

can do so at any time and need not

Sales/Advertising email: your request to: cosmo@nsabasi-publishing.co.za or fax to 086 550 8886

wait for the window period.

“The sooner the details are

uploaded, the quicker the payments

can be made,” Memela said.

Cash transfer

The CEO announced that clients

who opted to receive their special

COVID-19 SRD grant through cash

transfer will get their August 2020

payment through this preferred

method.

“They must ensure that the cell

phone numbers they provided to

SASSA to receive payments, are

registered in their own names

and not names of other people

like relatives or neighbours. It is

mandatory that the cell phone

number should have gone through

the RICA (Communication-Related

Information Act) process in order

for payment to be done through it.

“Any citizen who does not update

their information during this

window period, or who provides

incorrect banking details will have

the payments for the remaining

months sent through to the Post

Office,” Memela explained.

Basic Education Minister Angie

Motshekga has launched Woza

Matrics, a free-to-air television

initiative aimed at supporting

the matric learners of 2020 following

disruptions caused by COVID-19. The 12-

week Woza Matrics campaign will start on 1

September 2020 and will support Grade 12

learners in the build-up to their final matric

exams by providing quality educational

content.

Subjects covered by Woza Matrics include

Maths, Life Sciences, Geography, Physical

Science, Accounting, Economics, Maths

Literacy, English First Additional Language,

History and Business Studies. Woza Matrics

will be broadcast on SABC 3, on all DStv

packages and on Openview (Channel 122)

from 8:00 - 10:00 and 13:00 - 15:00, seven

days a week. It will also be available for free

on the DStv Now Catch up app.

A wide-reaching communications campaign

will ensure learners, parents and teachers

across the country know exactly where to

find the subject and content they need each

week. A link to support materials will also

be made available on 1 September 2020.

While all learners have lost school time,

this is most acutely felt by Grade 12s,

where marks are important for career and

university choices and where the content

to be covered is fixed and externally

examined.

Woza Matrics is led by the DBE, assisted

by the National Education Collaboration

Trust and developed in collaboration

with the South African Broadcasting

Corporation (SABC), Multichoice and

eMedia Investments, as well as with a

number of educational content providers

national news

Woza Matrics provides free TV

based support for learners

including Digicampus, Mindset and Monyetla

Trust, the Programme for Improved Learning

Outcomes (PILO), and other educationalists.

“This initiative has come at the right time

when we are working to get schooling back

on track. Matric is always stressful but 2020

has been filled with unusual stresses. I want

to congratulate all our Grade 12 learners

and their families for the perseverance and

determination.

“It is abundantly clear that additional support

is required for learners and we will continue

to provide this. There are a few months left

before the end of the year and Woza Matrics

will give learners the support they need

to prepare for the final exams,” said the

Minister. Motshekga conveyed a message of

gratitude to all the partners and sponsors

for the role they have played in the

development of the programme and availing

their platforms for education purposes,

particularly for Grade 12 learners.

“I am most grateful to SABC, Multichoice

who have shared all their excellent content

with Woza Matrics,” Motshekga said.

As partner of the Woza Matrics campaign,

the SABC said their role is not only a social

responsibility but a commitment to fulfil

a constitutional mandate of delivering

content that is intended to restore the

dignity of the South African citizens.

“As the SABC, we are pleased to be one

of the key role players in saving the 2020

matric year through the Woza matric

campaign. Education forms an integral part

of our mandate, and it is for this reason that

we have availed our platforms to advance

the education agenda in our country.

“As a public service broadcaster, we

are duty-bound to ensure that our

content includes a significant amount of

educational programmes, particularly

during a period when it is most needed,”

said SABC GCEO Madoda Mxakwe. Of their

involvement in the campaign, MultiChoice

Group CEO for General Entertainment and

Connected Video, Yolisa Phahle, said they

are committed to ensure that they minimise

the impact on youth by empowering them

through knowledge and skills.

eMedia Investments CEO Khalik Sherrif

said the positive impact of Woza Matrics

2020 will be realised when the matriculants

of this year receive their National Senior

Certificates timeously.

“Congratulations to all stakeholders

Rose and Roses: A movement to

Rose and Roses founder Roseline Molefe

“I got divorced because I could not

bear children,” said Roseline Molefe

the founder of the Rose and Roses

movement, which aims to empower

under privileged women and the disabled.

Molefe still believes that through God

everything is possible, and it is never too late.

“With or without children, there is need to

take care of the disadvantaged, especially

the girl child,” Molefe said. Out of her love

for children, she said, she invested in film

production equipment to give exposure to

talented children in the communities through

drama and documentaries. “The aim is to

help them shape their future,” she said.

“Underprivileged women need to be inspired

to build safe communities. We also want to

create opportunities for disabled community

members to achieve their goals.”

Rose and Roses is based in Brits community,

Molefe said, and they want to change people’s

lives through film production in places like

Cosmo City, Diepsloot and Zandspruit.

“Young people should utilise their talents,”

she said. “They should learn how to generate

income using their talent. We are working

hand in hand with pastors to encourage

community members to work together and

embrace the spirit of UBUNTU. I also want

to create a good business network with

women in the north of Johannesburg.”

Before becoming a business woman,

Molefe said, she used to sell food for school

children.

WHO urges countries to sign COVID-19 vaccine pact

The

When two siblings discover their

forced to pull one last job, they team

Tuesday, August 25, 2020

The World Health Organisation (WHO)

has urged countries to desist from the

nationalisation of COVID-19 vaccines

and has requested that they join a

vaccine pact. The call from WHO comes

as countries across the world race to find a

vaccine for COVID-19.

sourced Image

Following a letter to all member states

requesting them to join the vaccine arm of

the Act-Accelerator, WHO Director General

Tedros Ghebreyesus announced that 172

countries have signed up to COVAX Global

Vaccines Facility. The facility is a critical

mechanism for joint procurement and pooling

risk across multiple vaccines so that whatever

vaccine is proven to be safe and effective –

all countries within the facility will be able

to access them. The facility has both the

largest and most diverse COVID-19 vaccine

portfolio in the world. “New research outlines

that global competition for vaccine doses

could lead to prices spiking exponentially in

comparison to a collaborative effort such as

the COVAX Facility.

“It would also lead to a prolonged pandemic

as only a small number of countries would get

most of the supply. Vaccine nationalism only

helps the virus,” said Ghebreyesus. Presently,

there are nine vaccines that are part of this

dynamic portfolio; which is constantly being

reviewed and optimised to ensure access to

the best possible range of products.

“Even now discussions are ongoing with four

more producers and a further nine vaccines

are currently under evaluation for the longer

term,” said Ghebreyesus. The success of the

COVAX Facility hinges not only on countries

signing up to it, but also filling key funding

gaps for both the research and development

work and to support lower-income economies

within the facility.

“Investing in the COVAX Facility is the

fastest way to end this pandemic and ensure

a sustainable economic recovery,” said the

WHO DG. Through the allocation framework,

COVAX will ensure that low-, middle- and

high-income countries all receive the vaccine

in a timely way as soon as there is supply of

a safe and effective vaccine. Initially, when

there will be limited supply, WHO said those

at highest risk around the world will receive

the vaccine. This includes health workers, as

they are on the frontlines in this pandemic

and critical to saving lives and stabilising the

overall health system.

It also includes people over 65 years old and

those with certain diseases that put them

at higher risk of dying from COVID-19.

As supply increases, the next stage of

the vaccine rollout would be expanded

based on an assessment of each country’s

vulnerability to the virus. “A number of

vaccines are now in the final stage of clinical

trials and we all hope we will have multiple

successful candidates that are both safe

and effective. “In order to be able to secure

enough doses to rollout the vaccines, the

next step for the partnership is for countries

to make binding commitments in support of

the COVAX Facility,” said Ghebreyesus.

While funds have already been committed

towards the COVAX Facility, WHO said

more is urgently needed to continue to

move the portfolio forward. The goal of the

mechanism is to deliver at least two billion

doses of safe, effective vaccines by the end

of 2021. – SAnews.gov.za

Brand loyalty lets Mitsubishi

customers return

August/25/ 2020

CAPE TOWN.

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa

dealerships experience an influx of

returning customers, highlighting a

kind of customer loyalty envied by

many of its competitors.

“They keep on coming back thanks to

our quality vehicles, and many are kept

in families for many years,” says Nic

Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi

Motors South Africa. This was evident at

most of the 40 dealerships all over South

Africa when the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

1.5 TURBO proved to be the most popular

model since its launch.

“Here at our dealership the Triton pick-up

was most popular during lockdown, but

after we have returned in May customers

are also opting for the ASX as well,” says

Mark Africa, Dealer Principal at Mitsubishi

Motors Paarden Eiland.

New Vehicle Sales Manager Charl Smit, who

has been at the dealership since inception,

says the quality of all Mitsubishi models

is key to loyal customers staying with the

brand.

“Mitsubishi is one of the brands in South

Africa that experiences the highest return

business in the country – once a customer

has owned a Mitsubishi, many of them come

back to upgrade or expand their Mitsubishi

experience. Smit says the Mitsubishi Motors

Corporation in Japan and Mitsubishi

Motors South Africa supply “outstanding

quality products” and as it operates in a

niche market, customers appreciate the fact

that the model range offers “something for

everybody” without flooding them with

choices.

“We have a very loyal following. It is

unbelievable,” says the veteran Sales Manager

.As the first contact between MMSA and

Mitsubishi owners, the sales staff have a close

relationship with existing customers.

“We have a lasting relationship with them and

many return to buy a second and even a third

vehicle for their family, passing the older

models on to adult children,” recalls Smit.

Another kind of loyal customer are people

who have owned a Mitsubishi “for years”.

“One of Mitsubishi Paarden Eiland’s most

loyal customers is an older lady who bought a

Pajero LWB a few years ago. Her vehicle has

done over 800 000 km and she still brings it

back for each and every scheduled service.”

Africa says many customers “upgrade” their

vehicles as they progress in life. “Many then

keep their ‘old’ vehicle and buy another,

bigger model, and, as we have experience

with many families, eventually pass it on to

their children or family.”

Sports minister criticised by sale sharks boss

GALLO Images Edited

South African Minister for Sports, Arts and Culture

South Africa’s Minister for Sports,

Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa,

has come under fire from Sale Sharks

Director of Rugby, Steve Diamond.

That’s after the latter urged Mthethwa to

focus on ‘his own job’.

Mthethwa has received loads of backlash

after it was revealed that he had approached

SA Rugby for ‘clarity’ over the failure of a

host of players who failed to ‘take a knee’

in support of the #BLM movement before

Premiership matches in England. Players

wore T-shirts supporting the fight against

racism under the campaign ‘Rugby Against

Racism’.

However, 11 Sale Sharks players chose to

remain standing – with eight being South

Africans, namely Coenie Oosthuizen, Akker

van der Merwe, Jean-Luc du Preez, Lood de

Jager, captain Jono Ross, Dan du Preez, Faf

de Klerk and Rob du Preez.

The eight were joined by England centre

Manu Tuilagi, Welsh prop WillGriff John

and Scotland wing Byron McGuignon.

Sale Sharks were back in action on Friday

against log-leader Exter Chiefs. And this

time England’s Tuilagi took a knee, while all

eight South Africans in the starting line-up

opted to stand.

Speaking after the 32-22 defeat, Diamond

defended his players’ decision.

“If the South African sports minister is

anything like the UK sports minister, he

should concentrate on his own job and do

what’s right there and not get involved in

other areas,” he said.

“Sport across the world has shown its

faith and commitment to Blacks Live

Matter, whether it’s by wearing a T-shirt of

whether it’s taking a knee. Taking a knee

is everybody’s choice and I don’t think

the politicians should get involved, they

normally make a mess when they do, so just

leave it to us and the lads and let them have

their own opinion.”-SportsIndustry

Kugandrie govender

appointed csa

acting ceo

The Board of Cricket South Africa

has announced the appointment of

Kugandrie Govender as Acting Chief

Executive Officer.

“She is a multifaceted executive leader

with more than 23 years’ experience in

the corporate sector and currently holds

the position of Chief Commercial Officer

at Cricket South Africa,” said Acting

President, Beresford Williams. “We believe

that Kugandrie is the right person to drive

the organization forward during this

period.”

“CSA’s mandate is to ensure that cricket

is an inclusive sporting code for all South

Africans. It is important to improve our

reputation both locally and internationally.

This is a critical time for our organisation

and crucial for key stakeholders to work

together to improve the rating of cricket

among those who love, support, and follow

the sport, and those who have trust in the

sport’s ability to unify all South Africans.

We will work hard to improve the levels

of pride amongst our stakeholders and I

am humbled to be a part of the collective

that commits itself to ensure that CSA is

a federation of which South Africans are

proud,” said Govender.

This follows Jacques Faul stepping down as

Acting CEO, just hours after confirmation

that the organisation’s President, Chris

Nenzani, had also resigned.

Williams is acting as President until after

the CSA AGM on 5 September.

Faul’s exit added to the turbulent situation

the organisation finds itself in after COO

Naasei Appiah was fired, despite winning

an appeal against his early dismissal.
