Labour market
may be turning
The latest Business
Confidence Survey showed the
number of Waipa businesses
experiencing difficulties in
finding skilled staff in Waipa
remained consistent at 11%.
“This suggests the labour
market may have reached a
plateau,’’ says Te Awamutu
Chamber of Commerce chief
executive, Rachel Blake.
‘‘Businesses will need to
invest more time, effort and
resources into their people if
they expect to recruit and hang
on to valuable talent,’’ she says.
Waipa plan
details inside
If you were unable to make it
the numerous Annual Plan
consultation meetings provided
by Waipa District Council, you
can check out some of the vital
details in today’s four page Word
on Waipa.
Along with a financial
snapshot and project details,
there is a rates indicator
showing the effect of the overall
5.2% increase on sample
properties in different parts of
the district.
Drying up
The absence of rainclouds in
recent months is illustrated by
the fact that February and March
combined saw just over half the
rainfall of January.
Te Awamutu weather
watcher Paul Hobbs reports that
there was just 27mm of rain in
March, following on from just
41mm in February.
January had 121mm, making
it one of the wettest months in
the 21 years that Mr Hobbs has
been keeping records. But with
so little rainfall in the past two
months, the year to date total is
now well below average at
188.5mm.
Mangaohoi future in good hands
Te Awamutu students get to grips with their town’s stream
Mangaohoi Stream may
have been feeling neglected
in recent years, but it had
plenty of new friends last
Tuesday.
Over 60 students and
teachers representing six Te
Awamutu schools participated
in the first Mangaohoi
Stream Activities Day. The
event was facilitated by
Mangaohoi Stream – Making
the Connections Group,
which operates under the
umbrella of Te Awamutu
Safer Community Charitable
Trust.
‘‘The day went really well
with kids buzzing about
what they found out about
their stream,’’ says
sustainability facilitator
Robyn Irving.
In the morning school
groups rotated through five
separate activities. These
were designed as fun ways of
helping to develop students’
understanding of the history
of the Mangaohoi and what
the current state of the urban
stretch of the stream is.
This knowledge was then
used as a basis on which the
students continued the process
of developing a vision
statement for the stream.
This “visioning” process
was led in the afternoon by
Te Awamutu College
environmental students.
Student representatives
from the six schools will
again meet at the beginning
of term 2 to fine tune this
vision and develop plans for
future actions.
‘‘I think that the kids saw
some negative things about
the stream, such as very
little natural vegetation, difficult
access to the water and
lots of rubbish, but they also
got to see eels and inanga
swimming in the stream, so
that was really promising,’’
Mrs Irving says.
‘‘They also got to measure
the clarity of the water
(using a clarity tube) which
surprised some of the
students as to how relatively
clear it looks at this time of
year.’’
Mrs Irving says
indications from the
students so far are that they
want a sustainable stream
environment that all of Te
TC070410CT01
Awamutu feel proud of and
where local people can come
together as a community.
‘‘There are so many
opportunities for learning
with this sort of student led
project.
‘‘The process is as important
as the actions that they
choose to take, because kids
are being supported to
inquire, explore, grapple
with relevant local issues,
look at different attitudes
and values, consult with
others and collaboratively
plan. ‘‘These are our future
urban designers, ecologists
and politicians.’’
An interesting suggestion
came from one of the adults
— in his hometown they
collected all the rubbish
from the stream running
through town and dumped it
on a reserve in the centre of
town.
‘‘No one dumps stuff like
that in it any more!’’
Music to ears of a ‘non believer’
Although over the years I have loved
certain pieces of classical music, I have
always been a bit of a Philistine, in that I do
not follow classical music as such nor even
bothered to identify to any great extent the
pieces I liked.
This has all changed for me now, after
attending the Te Awamutu Music Federation
University of Waikato Student Recital
in the Council chamber rooms, on a recent
Sunday Sunday.
The performances were all of an excep-
tionally high level, that both enthralled
and astonished me.
The pieces played were so masterfully
handled by the performers, that I felt
emotions that I have never before considered
that I could be moved to by classical
music.
I had difficulty in hearing the description
of these artists as students, as to me
they were all consummate masters of their
chosen instruments.
Not the least of these performances,
were the perfect renditions by the soprano
whose skills with her vocal capacity made
me gulp with emotion, and the consummate
ease and mastery of the cello, by a
young man who is capable of performing
among the international best.
If the only the wider public took the
time to hear these ‘masters’ we call
‘students’, very soon there would not be a
local venue large enough to contain their
audience.
DENNIS PENNEFATHER
Get off architectural high horse
I am replying to Matt
Whitmarsh’s letter in the Courier
dated Tuesday, March 30.
Mr Whitmarsh – yes, architect
is a protected word in New
Zealand, and the only way one
can call themselves an architect
is by choosing to register with
the NZIA board.
But as the Courier has
already pointed out, calling Mr
Kraayvanger an “architect” was
the result of a
miscommunication, which Mr
Kraayvanger endeavoured to
rectify.
Cost real concern
Re Michael Cox letter on Dihydrogen Monoxide.
Your readers should be aware that this
liquid is also being sold in bottled form in all
our supermarkets, dairies, takeaways, service
stations etc.
Should we be concerned? Only at the cost of
the stuff, which can be up to three times the
cost of a litre of petrol.
For those who wish to collect their own, it
falls occasionally free from the sky.
Who is the joker Cox?
DAVID EDWARDS
The issue I wish to address is
in regards to your borderline
slanderous and highly misleading
comments about architectural
designers/draughtsmen.
Just because one may not
choose to pay the extortionate
yearly fee that NZIA charges in
order to register as an “architect”,
it does not necessarily
mean that one is any less qualified
to do the job. Sure, there
might be some people out there
who aren’t qualified – but the
majority have worked just as
long and hard as you have in
order to gain the same (or a
similar) qualification as yourself.
For many architectural
designers/draughtsmen, not
paying the registration fees
helps keep the overheads down,
which benefits the customer in
the long run, as they receive the
same professional service, but at
a more reasonable price.
What Mr. Whitmarsh also
failed to mention is that there
are other registration entities
out there, such as ADNZ, which
offer draughtsmen a more viable
alternative and are just as valid
as registering with NZIA – the
only difference is that you can’t
actually call yourself an “architect”,
even if you are properly
qualified. With this in mind, I
strongly recommend that anyone
wanting to build or renovate
should carefully consider ALL
their options and shop around
for the best design and price.
And to Mr Whitmarsh – you
can keep your overpriced, arrogant
‘architect’ label, because
we neither want it nor need it!
RACHEL SMITH
April 1 crucial date for ban
on Dihydrogen Monoxide
I expressed my concern about the
Dihydrogen Monoxide being pumped,
along with our water, to my old friend
Jim McLay (the best Prime Minister we
never had!).
He is now our country’s Ambassador
to the United Nations.
He replied in kind and I quote, “I
agree with you Michael, Dihydrogen
Monoxide should be banned — particu-
larly on April 1. Indeed, we need a UN
International Panel for the Total Elimination
of Dihydrogen Monoxide
(IPaTeDi); and maybe an NGO called
Dihydrogen Monoxide Sans Frontieres
(which will be better known as crossborder
flooding).”
Nice to know our diplomats have a
sense of humour isn’t it?
Te Awamutu homebased
The regulations set standards
It was not an event for ‘blushing blokes’,
odd wardrobe malfunction and ‘running-in
The event was part of the Beach Hop
CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Choose life
BY MAUREEN CALMAN
As I write this, we are part way through Holy
Week. This week is the defining week for Christians.
It’s a week when we followers of Jesus the Christ
remember his last week as one of us.
The week begins with Jesus’ entry into the city of
Jerusalem on a donkey when the crowds shouted out
“Hosanna!” (loosely translated it means “Please save
us!”). What did they want saving from? They thought
it was from the oppressive rule by the Romans.
Later in the week Jesus was betrayed by one of
those closest to him, and handed over to those
oppressive rulers. Through a series of unjust trials,
and desertion by his friends, he was eventually
condemned to die the cruel death of crucifixion on a
cross until he died.
But we Christians know that his death was not the
end. Jesus was taken down from the cross and placed
in an empty tomb cut from the rock in a hillside. His
body was left there for two nights and a day because
nothing could happen on the intervening Sabbath
Day. Early the next morning the women friends of
Jesus went to embalm his body, only to discover that
it was not there.
Then Jesus himself began to appear — very much
alive — first to the women, then the disciples and then
to hundreds of others, we are told. He was
resurrected, brought back to life by God. God was
having the final word in this drama, not the earthly
rulers.
Now you may find that all a bit hard to stomach. A
lot of people cannot understand why Jesus endured
such cruelty.
We could ask: how can the millions in our world
endure cruelty today? Many people cannot understand
the resurrection. Someone who has died coming
to life again? “Yeah, right,” I hear some say. I have
seen the lives of people and situations transformed
from a death-like state to a full-of-life makeover. God
having the final say gives us the hope of life after
death.
Of course I am meaning more than just physical
death here. Each of us has situations in our lives
every day when we make choices that can lead to a
death-like situation or to a full-of-life situation. The
hope we have in the resurrection of Jesus encourages
us to ‘choose life that you may live.’ Indeed,
remember the life, death and resurrection of Jesus —
and choose life.
Australian rider upstages Kiwis on home turf
Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester retain FEI World Cup qualifier crown
Australian rider Megan Jones
and Kirby Park Irish Jester
triumphed for the second year running
at the HSBC FEI World CupTM
Event at Kihikihi.
Jones finished the hugely successful
three-day event with the same
conviction with which they started
it, producing an effortless clear
round in the final show-jumping
phase on Sunday for an overall score
of 43.0 penalties.
Event spokesperson, Bevan
Houlbrooke says the winning combination
were freed of virtually all
pressure after uncharacteristic
errors by the riders sitting in second
and third places, but never looked
like needing the multi-rail advantage
at their disposal.
Heelan Tompkins and Major Difference
moved into second place
after producing a clear round to
finish the competition on 64 penalties,
with Clarke Johnstone and the
seasoned Oakley Vision third on 65.2,
and Alice Montgomery and Gordon
fourth on 66.6.
Jones took a firm lead in Friday’s
opening dressage phase on her top
horse Kirby Park Irish Jester, producing
a trademark expressive test
for a score of 39.4 penalties.
Johnstone earned second placing
delivering a supple, flowing test to
finish the day on a score of 47.0
penalties.
Montgomery was third on 49.0,
with Grayling close behind in fourth
place on NRM Lowenberg with 49.6
penalties.
The action then shifted to the
influential cross-country phase on
Saturday, where course builder John
Nicholson tested the courage and
jumping ability of the field.
In a spectacular day of action,
Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester
continued to dominate the field.
Jones opted to squander some of
her 7.6 penalty dressage lead by
BARBARA THOMSON PHOTO
MEGAN JONES and Kirby Park Irish Jester safely negotiate the water jump during Saturday’s crosscountry
phase at Kihikihi.
taking an option at fence three, but
went on to complete an economical
clear round with only 3.6 time penalties
to finish the day on 43.0 penalties.
While the lead remained firmly in
Jones’s capable hands — she had two
rails in hand going into the final
show jumping phase — Nicholson’s
cross-country track had a strong
influence on the rest of the field.
Two-time previous winner
Gordon, ridden by Alice
Montgomery, moved into second
place after producing a confident,
clear round to finish the day on 52.6
penalties.
Another previous winner, Oakley
Vision and Clarke Johnstone, also
delivered a smooth, clear round with
5.6 time penalties to finish on 61.2
penalties.
Other combinations to deliver
clear cross-country rounds were
Tompkins and Major Difference (64.0
penalties), Jenna Mahoney (66.0 penalties),
and Karen Niederer on Cape
Palliser (79.6 penalties).
The action now moves to Sydney
in Australia where the third HSBC
FEI World CupTM Eventing will be
held on May 7-9, 2010.
Megan Jones and Kirby Park
Irish Jester will start at Sydney with
71 World Cup points in hand ahead of
her fellow Australian riders.
FEI president, Her Royal Highness
Princess Haya thanked the
organisers and sponsors for their
commitment to this supreme highlight
of the New Zealand Eventing
calendar at Kihikihi.
‘‘On behalf of the Fédération
Equestre Internationale, I have
nothing but praise for the efforts of
the dedicated owners, athletes and
organisers within this discipline.
‘‘They have taken up the
challenges of a new age and are
leading the sport forward to a bigger
and brighter future.
‘‘I commend the organisers for
bringing one of our best-loved equestrian
sports to a growing audience
and HSBC for the support they are
offering that enables this to happen.’’
Princess Haya said riders at this
level are the ambassadors of our
sport and provide inspiration to the
young riders that follow them and
gradually infiltrate their ranks.
‘‘Since its creation in 2003, this
series has endeavoured to provide
athletes around the world greater
opportunities to be a part of the
global sporting scene.
‘‘In the coming months, no less
than 12 events will test their skills,
determination and stamina.
‘‘Excitement is sure to mount as
the climax of the season approaches
at Schenefeld (GER) at the end of
August, where the HSBC FEI World
Cup Eventing Champion will be
crowned.’’

Two lapses prove
costly for Sports
ports were left
amenting on what might
ave been after going
own 32-22 to Hamilton
arist in Waikato
remier rugby.
The home team gave
he visitors as good as
hey got at Albert Park on
hursday night and Hamlton
Marist must have
reathed a sigh of relief to
in by a flattering 10
oint margin.
Sports’ coach, Martyn
teffert thought his team
layed well against a
ood Marist side.
He felt that the differnce
between winning
nd losing was only the
ength of the field try in
he first spell and a
econd half intercept try.
Steffert was pleased
ith the controlled
ggression shown by his
eam and the fact that
hey kept pressure on the
pposition.
Peter Bain reports
hat both sides took it to
ach other in a torrid
orwards battle.
Marist applied early
ressure and opened the
coring with a penalty.
Sports slowly got
hemselves into the game
nd levelled the score
hrough a Ryan
eacheam penalty.
The home team
aintained the pressure,
ontrolling a huge
ortion of the first half
nd made life difficult for
arist to gain any qualty
possession.
Sports breached the
efence with a long pass
o mid-field for centre
noke Tuibua to break the
ine. Quick ball saw first
ive-eighth Leon Emery
ip through a big hole to
core under the posts.
eacheam converted for
is team to lead 10-3.
More pressure from
ports resulted in a penlty
on the Marist 10m, in
ine with the left hand
pright.
Emery caught both the
pposition and his team
ates napping, taking a
uick tap only to be
topped centimetres
hort of the try line.
Awamutu Sports against Hamilton Marist on
Thursday night.
Marist turned over the
ball, moved it quickly
wide inside their 22 and
raced the length of the
field to score against the
run of play.
Sports went into the
break leading 10-8.
Marist made a strong
start to the second spell,
pinning Sports down on
their on line.
Sports defended several
forward charges at
the line, only to have a
call from the touch-judge
go against them to see a
try awarded.
Marist’s 13-10 lead was
short lived as Sports
stormed back with a try
to Tuibua in the corner
for a 15-13 scoreline.
The visitors then
turned the heat up, scoring
three further tries —
one gifted to them via an
intercept pass — and a
penalty to clear out to
32-15.
Sports never gave in
and had the final say with
a try to No. 8 Daniel
O’Connor ending the
game at 32-22.
Once again Leon
Emery turned in a quality
performance and the
centre pairing of Josh
Harris and Inoke Tuibua
combined well.
Up front O ‘Connor
was again strong on
attack, and front-rowers
Craig Mora, Simon Kay
and Adrian Tucker
handled themselves well
against much bigger
opponents.
SUCCESSFUL riding style of Melanie Weal, one of
the many Te Awamutu competitors to shine at
Hastings.
Yvonne Weal driver extraordinaire
TC070410SP17
YVONNE WEAL and Draytown Trooper competing at Horse of
the Year Show in Hastings.
Yvonne Weal consolidated
her standing as one of, if not the
best, drivers in the country
taking out Carriage Horse of the
Year in Hastings.
Weal was dominant throughout
the three disciplines at the
Kelt Capital Horse of the Year
Show, winning the dressage section
and placed in both the
cones and the marathon
obstacles to take overall honours.
The cones course had to be
driven twice, within a set time.
There were faults for balls on
cones knocked off and time
faults for exceeding the time
allowed.
The three marathon
obstacles were driven one after
the other. This was an open
speed event.
Weal and Draytown Trooper
also won the Con Cours de
Elegance and Open Scurry competition
and, driving Greenlee
Ray ‘O’ Sunshine, placed second
in Open Scurry and third in
Carriage Horse of the Year.The
Open Scurry competition was
held, under lights, in the main
oval arena in front of a packed
crowd in the grandstand.
Weal says ‘it’s a real crowd
drawer’ which is why they put
the event on late in the programme,
to keep the crowd
there.
It is an open speed competition
through a course of cones,
with faults for any balls
knocked off the cones, These
faults get added to the driver’s
time.
Competitors are judged on
the elegance of their turnout in
the Con cours d’ Elegance.
Korakonui and Districts History
A meeting will be held in the staffroom Korakonui
School Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 7.00pm to
discuss;
Compiling stories of the early pioneers, history,
events etc, of the districts of Korakonui, Happy
Valley, Panetapu, Mangatutu, Wharepuhunga, and
Ngaroma, in an era that faced times of challenge,
hardship, change and progress.
We welcome discussion of ideas, and suggestions
to hopefully make a publication that will cover
the early days of this era in a record that will be a
lasting and valuable record for years to come.
Perhaps a timely project to coincide with the
Korakonui School Centennial year.
