step 3<br />
DRAWING YOUR FLOOR PLAN TO SCALE<br />
A good rule for the counter space is 12'' to 15''<br />
of land<strong>in</strong>g area around the range, refrigerator and<br />
microwave, with 24'' to 36'' on either side of the<br />
s<strong>in</strong>k. An island <strong>in</strong> the center of the kitchen can offer<br />
un<strong>in</strong>terrupted space that all work areas can share.<br />
Types of kitchen floor plans<br />
• Straight – the entire work area is on one <strong>wall</strong>.<br />
• Galley – an efficient layout when there are one or<br />
two cooks <strong>in</strong> the kitchen.<br />
• L-Shape – a common layout that makes good use<br />
of limited space.<br />
• U-Shape – an ideal design that provides an<br />
efficient work pattern with ample room for <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>e<strong>ts</strong><br />
and countertops.<br />
Mak<strong>in</strong>g a Rough Sketch<br />
Start by measur<strong>in</strong>g your exist<strong>in</strong>g kitchen space.<br />
Measure the s<strong>in</strong>k w<strong>in</strong>dow <strong>wall</strong> first. Start <strong>in</strong> the<br />
corner and measure (<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ches) to the edge of the<br />
w<strong>in</strong>dow trim. Measure the <strong>wall</strong> at floor, at center of<br />
<strong>wall</strong> and at ceil<strong>in</strong>g for accuracy. Mark space <strong>in</strong> grid.<br />
Locate centerl<strong>in</strong>e of s<strong>in</strong>k and measure to the<br />
nearest corner. Show on grid.<br />
Straight kitchen Galley kitchen<br />
L-shape kitchen U-shape kitchen<br />
Next, measure all w<strong>in</strong>dows and doors. Mark<br />
width from ou<strong>ts</strong>ide of trim to ou<strong>ts</strong>ide of trim.<br />
Mark which way each door sw<strong>in</strong>gs, extend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a l<strong>in</strong>e from the h<strong>in</strong>ge side.<br />
Cont<strong>in</strong>ue work<strong>in</strong>g clockwise, record<strong>in</strong>g all<br />
measuremen<strong>ts</strong> of the room, mark<strong>in</strong>g locations<br />
and dimensions of doors, w<strong>in</strong>dows, archways,<br />
duc<strong>ts</strong> to ou<strong>ts</strong>ide and other breaks. Indicate<br />
which are exterior <strong>wall</strong>s. Then mark locations of<br />
electrical outle<strong>ts</strong>, light switches and light fixtures<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>etry <strong>in</strong>stallation area. Jot down the<br />
overall length of <strong>wall</strong>s, height of the room and<br />
distance of every item from the floor, like outle<strong>ts</strong>,<br />
switches, ledges and soffi<strong>ts</strong>.<br />
Next, study the <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>e<strong>ts</strong> <strong>in</strong> this book and select<br />
your dream styles, not<strong>in</strong>g dimensions. Sketch<br />
<strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>etry <strong>in</strong> your plan, as appropriate.<br />
You will need 40" below w<strong>in</strong>dows and electrical<br />
<strong>wall</strong> outle<strong>ts</strong> to fit new base <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>e<strong>ts</strong>, countertop<br />
and a 4" backsplash.<br />
A soffit is the bulkhead between the ceil<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
the top of the <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>e<strong>ts</strong> <strong>in</strong> some homes. Distance<br />
from floor to soffit should be at least 84". Allow<br />
1⁄4" more if you <strong>in</strong>stall an 84" tall <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>et. Depth<br />
may vary. Normal depth is 13" (1" deeper than a<br />
<strong>wall</strong> <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>et).<br />
If you do not have soffi<strong>ts</strong>, a 42" <strong>wall</strong> <strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>et may<br />
be used, or leave the space above the <strong>wall</strong><br />
<strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>et open. Cont<strong>in</strong>ue add<strong>in</strong>g your desired<br />
<strong>cab</strong><strong>in</strong>e<strong>ts</strong>, appliances and work station dimensions<br />
as appropriate. Your sales associate can check<br />
your f<strong>in</strong>al plans for accuracy before order<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
