Making History with Polled Herefords
At the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century
there was a “new breed” of cattle coming onto the beef industry
scene in Missouri and people were both interested and skeptical. It
appeared to be an off shoot of the standard Hereford breed that had
been imported from England many years before and had served the
beef cattleman well over the ensuing years. But what of this new
breed that did not have horns? If they had bred away the horns,
what else had they changes about the well known animals that
many relied on for their farm income?
Actually the Polled Hereford was not that new. The breed was
developed first by an Iowa cattle rancher, Warren Gammon, and he
set up the first Polled Hereford Registry with 11 naturally polled
animals in the latter part of the 19th century around 1890. The
acceptance of the “new breed” was slow as any new thing was in
those days but the qualities of this breed appealed to several farm
owners in the central Missouri area because of its thriftiness, ease
of calving and docile disposition.
Because of the skepticism on the part of many cattle men and
because, on a few occasions the polled animals were not allowed in
sales with the traditional ones, there was not a ready market place
for polled animals around central Missouri in the mid-1900’s This
led to a meeting of about half a dozen farmers who wanted to find
a way to sell their polled animals without interference. Richard
Seifert of Morrison, Mo was the leader of this small group and
when the Central Missouri Polled Hereford Breeders Association
was formed in 1952 he became it’s first President. The first Show
and Sale of this new association was held on February 3, 1953 in a
heated tent on the Osage Co Fair grounds in Linn, MO. Thirteen
breeders consigned cattle to that sale and 28 bulls and 24 females
were sold. The consigners included Cedar Grove Farm, at Freeburg;
Eugene Goser, Osage City; D. C. Andrews, Union; James Burger,
Hermann; Albert Norris, Salem; Brown Acres Farm, Mexico; H.A.
Landwehr, O’Fallon; Lawrence Renn & Son, Jefferson City; Harold
Rousset, Gerald; Martin Schake, Marthasville; Valley View Farm,
Morrison; Louis Hahn, Owensville; and Serene Acres, Jefferson
City.
For quite a few of the early years Don Bowman, Livestock
Sale Service of Hamilton, MO served as the sale manager. Early
auctioneers were Col. Guy Pettit from Bloomfield, IA, Col. Jewett
Fulkerson of Liberty, MO and Col. Wes Hays of Smithton, MO.
It was the practice of the Association in the early days to have
a judged show in the morning of sale day and Mr. Rollo Jones of
Calhoun, MO was one of the first judges along with Prof. C.M.
Bradley from University of Missouri . Trophies were awarded to
the winners as well as cash prizes and were furnished by business
sponsors and the Missouri Department of Agriculture. There were
several persons in positions of responsibility that were present
and gave advice and support. These included Don Chittenden,
American Polled Hereford Ass’n, Mark Dempsey of the Missouri
Ruralist, Shelby Kahrs of the weekly Star Farmer and Alva Creach
of the Missouri Farmer.
As the Association moved on toward its Fifth Annual Sale
there was evidence of growth. At that sale 57 head, 35 bulls and
22 females, were sold, consigned by 22 farms in the area. Clarence
Winkelman, Cedar Grove Farm at Freeburg, was president and
Clyde Francis of Jefferson City served as secretary at that time. The
sale was now in a heated pavilion at the Osage County Fairgrounds.
Dr. A.J. Dyer of Missouri University was the judge of the show.
4
Again, the Missouri Department of Agriculture gave the ribbons
and prizes for the show winners. When the 10th sale was coming
up the Association decided that a special drawing card was in order
and the consigners purchased a Hereford heifer from Martin Schake
at Marthasville to be given away at the end of the sale. Everyone
who came had an opportunity to register and have their name drawn
to win the heifer. This began a tradition that was carried on for
several years. A special invitation was issued to the 4-H and FFA
young people to attend the sale. Lawrence Renn, Jefferson City was
now president of the Association and Richard Seifert was serving
as secretary. The fifteenth sale saw much the same personnel and
location. Don Bowman was no longer managing the sale and
Lawrence Renn was now serving as secretary and sale manager.
The year 1974 was a year of expansion for the CMPHBA. They
moved the sale to a new facility, the Feeder Calf Pavilion, a mile
west and a mile north of Linn on Highway 100. Also it was the year
that they decided to have a second sale in the fall. The first fall sale
was held on September 7, 1974 with 69 lots, 13 bulls and 56 females,
for sale. By this time the tradition of having a judged show the
morning of the sale had been given up so at 12:00 noon Auctioneer
Wes Hays struck the gavel and the 24th sale of the Central Missouri
Polled Hereford Breeders Association was underway.
The recounting of all these facts and figures might indicate that
the sale proceeded in a rather predictable and almost boring way
over the years but that would be a mistaken idea. Anyone who has
been associated with these sales probably has a few memories of
when things went a bit amiss. In the early days there was a dubious
practice of giving the animals beer to give them an added “finish”.
One breeder got to looking at a bull he had brought in and decided
the animal needed a little help. He remembered that he had a six
pack in his truck so he got the beer and poured a generous amount
down the bull’s throat. By the time the bull got in the ring he was
so drunk that he sort of went crazy and pretty well demolished the
sale ring. Another incident was the outgrowth of not as much fitting
as is common now. One old fellow brought in a bull that was just
covered with mud, right out of the pasture. Someone at the sale
suggested that it would be good if he would clean the animal up a bit.
There were limited facilities for doing that at the sale site so, being
the innovative soul that he was, he drove the truck, trailer and bull
through the local carwash! The bulls were not the only offenders.
At one sale a cow being unloaded did not want to be where she was,
and she saw a space not really wide enough to get her head through
between the side of the trailer and the side of the chute, but to her
it was her only hope of escape so she committed whole heartedly to
going through that space and getting out of there. In the process she
broke the chute, damaged the trailer and was not captured until the
owner and his recruited helpers found her roughly 2 miles away in
the parking lot of McDonald’s. Another cow was a bit more subtle
in her avoidance of the sale ring. She got loose some way and ran
for all she was worth but she was able to find a herd of Herefords
somewhere along her path so she mingled with them and was not
detected until those animals were rounded up a couple of months
later to wean the calves.
But in spite of the afore mentioned incidents the sales continued
to progress under the guidance of the same core of dedicated leaders
and some new Polled Hereford devotees that came along. After
History story continued on page 9

A Word From the Board
By Jimmie Butler
Hereford Breeders,
Hereford Cattle are on a roll and we need to keep the
momentum going. Demand for our product continues to
grow. Many commercial breeders understand the economic
benefits of heterosis and are taking advantage of Herefords
to add value to their calves. Let’s keep our knives sharp and
retain only those quality animals who will continue to make
us the “go to” breed in the commercial cattle industry.
The summer and fall show and sale schedules provide
Hereford enthusiasts with exciting opportunities to participate
as exhibitors, spectators, consignors, or buyers. The Hereford
influence feeder calf sale in Eldon on July 9, the Junior National
Expo in Grand Island, the Ozark Empire Fair in Springfield,
the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, and the Missouri Hereford
Field Day are all events of interest. The 100th Anniversary
Sale of the Central Missouri Polled Hereford Association
will be a landmark event on September 14 and 15 at the
Miller County Regional Stockyards in Eldon. There will be
a performance by country music legend, Leroy Van Dyke
on Friday evening and a complimentary lunch on Saturday
before the sale. Be sure to refer to the schedule of events and
sales in the calendar in this and coming issues of the Missouri
Hereford News for dates of private sales and other events.
Our breed was well represented at the Missouri Cattleman’s
All Breed Junior Show on June 9 in Sedalia. Over 90 head
of Herefords were exhibited and the quality was deep. The
champions are pictured elsewhere in this issue. The Missouri
Futurity Show was held at the conclusion of the open classes.
Six juniors returned to show in this class with the heifers they
bought at last year’s Opportunity Sale in December. There
was extra prize money for these exhibitors that was provided
We should all be aware of
a major fund raising project the
juniors are carrying out during
the summer. They are selling
raffle tickets on a show quality heifer from Roth Hereford
Farm that will be given to the lucky ticket holder at the MHA
Field Day. I’m told that there is a picture and pedigree of this
heifer on the junior page in this issue so you can check her
out. Contact your favorite junior for tickets.
The Missouri Opportunity Sale selection process is
underway. If you missed the deadline of May 1 to get your
nomination fee in but you would still like to participate in the
sale you could contact Matt Reynolds or me and we can see
if the evaluation visit is still possible in your area. We need
more breeders participating in the Opportunity Sale to make
it THE showcase sale for the Missouri Hereford Association.
The Association is in the best shape it has been in recent
memory. We have a thriving junior program and a strong
women’s organization. Sales and shows are up in numbers,
quality and sale prices, and our multi-media communications
system is the envy of most state associations. All we need
are more members to provide even better services to our
breeders. A $40 membership is the best investment you
can make to promote your Hereford cattle in Missouri and
beyond and put more dollars in your pocket. One fairly
new member was telling us at the MCA show about the big
increase in calls for Hereford animals that he has experienced
since becoming a member of the Association. If you are
not a member, I encourage you to send in the membership
application provided in this magazine.
Looking forward to seeing you at upcoming events.
A Note from the Editor:
Greetings again, Hereford Breeders.
Here we are in the middle of the Show and Fair season and half
of another year has gone into history. Where does the time go? I
hope you have had a good spring and that you have some really
good looking spring calves in the pasture. The very warm spring
has made everything a bit ahead of schedule. The hay in the south
central part of the state is pretty short and I think other parts of the
state are dry, too.
Word that comes from official sources as well as evidence
gathered from personal experience at sales this spring show that
interest in, and demand for, our breed continues to be high so it
should be a good year for both seed stock and commercial breeders.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the Hereford Influence Feeder Calf
Sales organized by the folks at Miller County Regional Stockyards.
Herefords are respected there and they have buyers who cooperate
with the Certified Hereford Beef Program so you can capture top
dollar for your good feeder calves at two upcoming sales, one on
July 9 and one in early November.
The Juniors have a money raising project going this summer.
They are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a show heifer
at a drawing in September during the Field Day. There is more
information on the juniors page further back in this issue. Field
Day will be held at Roth Hereford Farm outside of Windsor, MO on
September 8th
Another item of interest on the horizon is the big sale and
celebration organized by the Central Missouri Polled Hereford
Breeders Association in connection with their 100th consecutive
sale. It is believed to be the longest running sale of its kind in the
country. A big weekend is planned for September 14 and 15 at the
Miller County Stockyards so if you enjoy country music, good food,
fun and fellowship as well as great Herefords for sale save the date
and plan to be there. There will be lots of things to see and do
on that weekend. Attractions and accommodations at Lake of the
Ozarks are a short drive away.
We welcome some new voices to the University Page in this
issue. Representatives of the Darr School of Agriculture at Missouri
State University in Springfield are writing about how the University
is making use of their wonderful gift of the Journagan Ranch at
Mountain Grove, MO to give students valuable hands-on experience
in ranch duties. I want to thank Dr. Anson Elliott, head of the Darr
School, for arranging this feature for us and we will look forward
to hearing from him on other occasions. Joe Rickabaugh is back
with his views from the perspective of the American Hereford
Association and there are several sale roundups that you can check
out if you are interested.
3/4 teaspoon salt
BLT Steak Salad
6 cups romaine lettuce
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup halved cherry tomatoes
Sprinkle the steak with 1/2 the salt and pepper. Spray a skillet with cooking spray and set over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook 5 minutes on
each side for medium-rare. Transfer steak to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes. Cut the steak in strips on a angle against the grain. Meanwhile, wisk
together the oil, vinegar, mustard and remaining salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add the lettuce, tomatoes and onions and toss to coat well. Transfer the
salad to a platter. Top with the steak slices and sprinkle with the blue cheese and bacon. Serve immediately.
There are the usual little features;
Around the Barn, a summer recipe to
try, an updte on the reorganization of
the women’s group, a couple of smiles
to lighten the days and various bits of,
hopefully, useful information.
Almost as you are reading this the
2012 Junior National Hereford Expo is
getting underway in Grand Island, NE.
We wish all the juniors the very best of luck and success at this
year’s Expo. I hope as many breeders as possible will be there to
cheer on our kids. They do a wonderful job with their cattle and are
good ambassadors for our Missouri Herefords.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the various shows this
summer. I hope the weather will be moderate enough for me to
attend all of them. I had to miss the Ozark Empire Fair last year
because of the extreme heat since I almost had become sick the year
before. I live in too much air conditioning to be able to stand a full
day of 100+ heat.
I wish you all a safe, happy and profitable summer. See you
around the show ring.
When you’re from the country ~
your perception is a little different.
A Missouri farmer in his pickup, drove to a neighbor's, and
knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door
"Is your Dad home?"
"No sir, he isn't; he went to town."
"Well, is your Mother here?"
"No sir, she went to town with Dad."
"How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?"
"No sir, He went with Mom and Dad."
The rancher stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to
From the AHA
By Joe Rickabaugh
Hereford Sales Strong—What’s Next ?
To say the Hereford market is strong and getting stronger would
be an understatement. Often heard when talking with breeders from
across the country is the bull pen is sold out or just a few of the
young ones are left. Hasn’t always been that way but the last couple
of years has brought many from the commercial industry to the Hereford
marketplace.
Going right along with this upward trend are the female sales
following suit. With the overall cattle industry inventory of females
at historic lows this trend is probably more intense in the Hereford
trade. People are hunting good registered and commercial females.
At the recent AHA board meetings some compelling comparisons
for Hereford sale averages was presented. The comparison
was for Hereford production and consignment sales from January
through April 15 for both 2011 and 2012. Bull sales in 2011 tallied
2,931.13 lots grossing $12,494, 604 to average $3,776—in
2012 3391.07 lots grossed $17,343,200 to average $5,114.37. Female
sales in 2011 totaled 1,024 lots grossing $2,440,673 to average
$2,383---in 2012 1,088.5 lots grossed $3,331,888 to average
$3,061.
To put this in perspective 459.94 more bulls sold in 2012 with
the gross being up $4,848,596 and the average was up $851. There
were 64.5 more lots of females which grossed $891,215 more and
pushed the average up $678 in comparison to the previous years.
Overall lots in 2012 were up 524, grossing $5,739,811 more and the
average increased $839.
Above are some powerful numbers that should make many feel
pretty good. Yes the Hereford industry, right along with the beef
cattle industry is surging upward at a historical pace—but what
does the next few years portray? Even more importantly what does
this mean for Hereford breeders both large and small?
For some it means they will do very well because they have a
marketing plan and they will continually search for new markets.
Just as important they will also take care of past clients and realize
more dollars for both bulls and females due to the competition for
their product. On the other side of the coin there will be breeders
who will continually hope the market comes to them and yes they
will enjoy the upsurge due to the overall cattle market. But sitting
and hoping will also leave potential sales on the table.
Hopefully the message gleaned from these paragraphs is, the
market is there for those who are willing to market their program.
We are continually getting calls asking where to find Hereford
breeders in their local states. If you are not telling and promoting
your program they will never find it. Always has been that way but
with the state of the industry now may be the time to really make
hay.
The very first step to marketing is getting a handle on your sale
inventory. This means making a list of animals you have for sale.
The list should include pedigree, performance information, epds,
breeding status, service sires, projected calving dates, etc. Don’t
forget a price for each animal. Get it down in a list so you have the
information readily available for the potential buyer when they call
or ask you to send it to them. Oh, you don’t have this information
you say---just remember other breeders do and buyers like information.
If it takes you a week to round up the information after the
buyer calls you have given that potential client plenty of time to
look elsewhere. Get your marketing plan ready.
In the state of Missouri there are numerous ways to get involved
9
and market your program. The chance to consign to the Missouri
Opportunity is now—contact Matt Reynolds if you would like to
consign. There are other sales that are also looking for Hereford
consignments—make a few calls. Get your name out there where
people can find it. The Missouri Hereford News is a good place to
start--Sue Hand is a great person to work with and does a superior
job with the Missouri Hereford News. Advertise your cattle and
program—the market is on your side and your competitor is making
sure they have their name out there.
Personal follow-up and calls are powerful tools in a seedstock
operation. Calls to potential clients letting them know of an upcoming
sale or a group you have for sale can lead to sales. Have you
called your past bull customers to check on how good the calves are
by the bull you sold him? He might want to buy another one or two
or more. Have you called that young person who bought a show
heifer or steer from you? Just to see how they are getting along.
While you are on the phone with them might be an opportune time
to inform them of that new calf that might work for them this year.
Prime example just received a call yesterday from a smaller
breeder. He told me he had just got off the phone with a breeder
about his upcoming sale. This smaller breeder was totally impressed
that the gentleman had taken time to call and invite him
to his sale. The breeder said he would be proud if he would come
down and take a look at the cattle and enjoy himself at the sale. As
we ended our conversation the smaller breeder told me he had not
planned on going to the sale and now was considering working it
into his schedule. Even more powerful, he told me when he was
ready to buy some more cattle he would be visiting this ranch—he
said he was humbled and honored the gentleman had called him.
Marketing lesson number one—this is a people business first.
If I can ever be of assistance with your Hereford operation,
please give me a call—785-633-3188.
History story continued from page 4
Lawrence Renn’s lengthy service as manager of the sale, Robert
Schulen of Belle, Mo became the secretary and sale manager in
2003. The other officers at that time were President, Glenn Muenks
of Bonnots Mill, MO and Vice President, Frank Flaspohler of
Boonville, MO. At the 2007 sale there were 93 lots sold, 15 bulls,
and 78 females, By this time Jack Lowderman was the auctioneer
of the sale.
That brings us to the present day and the spring sale that was
held on March 10th, 2012 with 24 consigners supplying 60 lots.
One thing that stands out immediately as we look back over the last
59 years is how the price of the animals has increased. At the sale of
February 1, 1955 nearly all the cattle were sold for under $500.00
and the few that were not weren’t very much above $500.00. By
comparison, the average of all lots at the 2012 spring sale was
$1,970.00. Gary Mistler’s bull, Butch, brought $4,750.00 and a
nice cow/calf pair consigned by Tim Cavanaugh sold separately for
a total of $3,675.00. I think it is fair to say that the quality of the
animals has improved as well. The herds represented in this sale
have been continually upgraded by bringing in high quality bulls
and replacement females that have added significant quality.
As the early sale manager, Don Bowman, wrote in the catalog
for the 10th sale in 1962, “Little did a small group of 5 or 6 men
realize, as they met one evening around the dinner table, that
they were writing history. Little did they realize the lives and
herds of many breeders and farmers that would be affected by the
organization that was formed that evening over 10 1/2 years ago.”
I wonder what he would say now, 59 years later as we look to the
100th consecutive sale. They did, indeed, write history!

New Journagan Ranch practicum class offers hands-on experience
by Jim Bellis, Assistant Director, William H. Darr School of
Agriculture, Missouri State University
Introduction to Leo Journagan Ranch
Most Missouri Hereford breeders are aware of the generous
gift of prominent Springfield business leaders Leo and Jean
Journagan to Missouri State University beginning in fall 2009
thru the present. The gift included over 1000 head of cattle
and more than 3000 acres south of Mountain Grove, Missouri.
The renowned LJR Hereford herd remains intact under the
same longtime leadership team headed by herd manager,
Marty Lueck. Lueck directs four other fulltime personnel, all
of whom now are Agriculture employees at MSU. Dr. Anson
Elliott is Director of the School of Agriculture.
Numerous education related groups who have visited
the ranch in the last year or so including: leaders from the
Missouri Department of Conservation, Wagons and Wine
Benefit Trail Ride, the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association
Board of Directors, international educators from China, state
board members of the Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri State
University Board of Governors, Missouri State University
Foundation, the chief CEO of the American Hereford
Association, potential transfer students from NEO, Crowder,
and OTC, state and national legislators, and numerous
community business leaders.
Hands-on application of the knowledge acquired in
the classroom was the goal of the new Journagan Ranch
practicum class offered spring 2012 at the William H. Darr
School of Agriculture. Students experienced what life is like
during calving season at the ranch in Mountain Grove, Mo.
According to Dr. Melissa Hudson, assistant professor of
animal science at the William H. Darr School of Agriculture,
25 students, who were enrolled in upper-division animal
science classes, signed up to take part. These students traveled
to the ranch and helped with calving season as well as other
ranch duties.
Students had options for receiving credit. They could
sign up to help on the ranch for one weekend and write a
300-500 word reflection to earn extra credit in one of their
upper-division animal science classes. Or, they could sign
up for two weekends, work a minimum of 32 hours, and
write a 600-1000 word reflection to earn one-credit-hour
for AGS 492 special problems course.
Participating students were allowed to stay overnight at
the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station dormitory and
reported to the ranch in the morning. While there, students
spent time with ranch employees to gain calving season
that is only beginning to be utilized is the agriculture student
internship program at the ranch. The following article first
MSU students get hands-on experience at calving time at Journagan
Ranch.
Marty Lueck, Journagan Ranch manager, said he
wanted the opportunity to be practical and provide hands-on
experience to enhance what students had learned in the class
room.
“I want students to have a good experience when they
come,” stated Lueck as he discussed goals for the practicum
class.
The experience also was a good one for Lueck. He said
it was enjoyable to interact with students by answering
questions about the ranch and about their futures in the world
of agriculture.
According to Hudson, the main goals of the practicum
were to get the ranch extra hands during calving season and to
get students hands-on learning experiences.

Missouri Hereford Women
Reported by Theresa Vest
A group of Hereford women met during the Missouri
Cattlemen’s Show on Sunday, June 10. The discussion
was focused on how to move forward as one organization,
following last August’s vote to merge. Everyone
was excited to be part of a new organization and looking
forward to advancing in a united effort. The goals of the
new organization are to support the Juniors and to promote
the Hereford breed.
As part of the united effort, a committee was formed
to develop new bylaws. This committee is being chaired
by Gretchen Thompson. There was also discussion
about what role the women’s organization would have
in supporting the Hereford Queen. It was decided that a
committee should be formed to develop guidelines, the
application process, and rules around the Missouri Hereford
Queen. Susan Ewing will be chairing this committee.
If anyone would like to be part of either committee,
or have ideas to share, please contact either one of these
two committee chairpersons.
The next meeting of the women’s organization will
be at the Missouri State Fair, on Saturday, August 11,
at 9:00 am. The location will be determined and signs
will be posted around the buildings. At this meeting a
vote will be taken to select a name for our organization.
If you have ideas for a name, you may bring them to
the meeting or send them to either Katherine Fuller or
Teresa Vest. Election of officers will also be held during
the State Fair meeting. EVERYONE is invited to attend
this meeting. Even if you haven’t been a member in the
past, or haven't been a member for a while. All ideas and
suggestions are appreciated and welcomed.
We hope everyone will be supportive during this
transition period. It will take some give-and-take to
make our organization a strong, united group, however,
by working together we will persevere!
Ellen attends Miller High School- will be a Jr. in the
fall.
She is very active in the FFA and currently serves
as the 2nd Vice-President for her chapter. She recently
attended and graduated from the Missouri Agribusiness
Academy. She plays softball and is a member of
FCCLA. She is in the National Honor Society and
Ellen enjoys horseback riding, swimming, photography,
crocheting, knitting, sewing, and scrapbooking.
Her greatest joy comes from her cattle. She makes
breeding choices and works with them daily. Herefords
are her favorite breed, of course, though she does have
some commercial Angus cows with her sister, Addison,
and raises black baldies.
