SecondBite acknowledge the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land,

sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures and to their elders both past and present.

MESSAGE FROM

THE CHAIR

SecondBite provides fresh and nutritious food to

Australians in need.

We do this by rescuing perfectly good food that

would otherwise go to waste, especially from the

retail sector, supported by our national partner,

Coles, and increasingly from direct donations by

primary producers. In short, we are a logistics bridge

between potential waste and society need – two

birds, one stone.

During the FY19 year SecondBite rescued and

redistributed almost 20 million kilograms of food

through our network of 1,300 community partners.

This is the equivalent of around 35 million meals for

Australians “doing it tough”. In the process, we are

helping facilitate a range of social interactions - the

world can be a lonely place.

SecondBite has an ambitious strategy to rescue and

redistribute 40 million kilograms of food (80 million

million meals) by 2024. We have an even more

ambitious target of achieving this volume at a

productivity rate of 8 meals (4 kilograms of food) for

every dollar we spend, but at this point we are some

way off achieving this level of cost efficiency - in the

current year, we expect to produce around 6 meals

for each dollar (i.e. less than 20c/meal), a remarkably

low per meal cost.

Over and above these targets, there is a wider issue

– both a challenge and an opportunity – working

with governments and other not for profits - such as

FareShare - to address food waste, and hunger relief

(an embarrassment in a country with all Australia’s

riches); a major project of some urgency.

Our role in reducing food waste, and relieving hunger,

is only possible due to the commitment of our

employees, ably led by our Chief Executive, Jim

Mullan, and our army of selfless volunteers.

Equally important is our very generous donor base,

including many longstanding supporters.

SecondBite’s Board is very grateful for the many and

varied contributions of all our donors and volunteers,

many of whom are listed on page 26.

Since the organisation was established by Ian

and Simone Carson in 2005, SecondBite has

continued to evolve. We are proud of our history

and achievements to date and look forward to

further growth so that - working with others - we can

continue to help put more meals on the tables of

Australians in need of a hand.

David Williamson

Chair

SecondBite sees a future where we partner more

effectively with all players in the commercial food

supply system - the producers, the retailers, transport

and storage partners. Where capturing, storing,

moving and delivering perfectly edible wasted food

is part of the one unified national food logistics

process – with less need for separate and duplicated

food rescue processes - creating a bigger win- wins

for everyone in terms of social, economic and

environmental outcomes.

3. Message from the Chair

MESSAGE FROM

THE CEO

It has been another year of significant growth for

SecondBite. FY19 saw food donation volumes grow

by over 40%, which is a testament to the energy,

flexibility and creativity of our teams across the

country and I am grateful for, and appreciative of, all

of their efforts on our behalf.

The year was particularly significant with respect

to the increasing support that SecondBite received

from primary producers and manufacturers of food.

This growing feature of our work is a result of the

development of dedicated resources in both food

procurement and transportation and represents a

major growth opportunity for us in the years to come.

This year also saw the renewal of our relationship

with the newly demerged Coles. Our new five-year

agreement cements our joint commitment to

feeding as many Australians as possible whilst

improving the environmental sustainability of both

organisations. There is no question that SecondBite

would not have grown to become the organisation

that it is without the support of Coles over the last

nine years and we are delighted that the relationship

continues to develop in new and increasingly

sophisticated ways under the leadership of James

Graham and Steven Cain.

The many other highlights in the last year included:

• our first year of operation in WA thanks to the

Pratt Foundation and Lotterywest

• another successful Waste Not Want Not event

with Matt, Curtis, Gary, George and a host of top

chefs

• our work with the WA Food Relief Framework

Group

• our growing relationship with FareShare

• the purchase of our headquarters in Melbourne

underpinned by the Victorian Government

• the upgrade of our IT systems and network led by

Janine and the team at Heidelberg West, and

• the development of dedicated bridging transport

for Coles distribution centres around the country

thanks to the Coles Nurture Fund.

All the elements above contribute to our growing

confidence in our ability to make an even greater

contribution to the lives of those less fortunate in the

years to come. I’d like to make two points to finish,

one clarification and one acknowledgement.

SecondBite’s primary measure of operational

performance is, and will remain, volume of food

distributed by comparison with dollars received.

This simple analysis creates a clarity with respect

to our own internal drive for efficiency and the value

produced for our donors and supporters.

Our accounts this year are skewed by the

accounting requirement to include the generous

$2.7M contribution from the Victorian Government

for the purchase of our premises at 93 Northern

Road in FY19, even though the grant is effectively

a repayment free mortgage over the next 20 years.

Please take this into account when reviewing our

underlying performance and related metrics.

Last year saw the second and final instalment of

$500,000 from the Perpetual Impact Grant Fund.

The impact grant has created the “breathing space”

that SecondBite needed to develop a comprehensive

understanding of our operating environment,

consider the long-term solutions, and shape

SecondBite to play a more influential role in meeting

the challenges that lie ahead.

We have been aided in our learning by industry

experts from Coles in particular but also supported

by contributions from 7-Eleven, PFD Foods and the

extended network our of Board.

I hope that you find the remainder of our report

interesting and informative.

SOCIAL AND

ENVIRONMENTAL

IMPACT

In FY19 SecondBite rescued more than 19.4 million

kilograms of food nationally, which equates (after

wastage) to 35 million meals – or 100,000 meals

every day – for people experiencing food insecurity

across Australia. Even with a 40% increase in food

rescue compared with the previous 12 months,

SecondBite has been able to maintain a return of five

equivalent meals for every dollar contributed.

SecondBite’s agency network, which interfaces with

people in need to provide food relief, is a vital part of

our redistribution model. More than 1,000 agencies

around Australia have received food donations from

SecondBite, completely free of charge, which have

been transformed into emergency food hampers,

community meals, and used for breakfast programs

and market-style food banks, to relieve hunger in

their communities.

“The Monday Night Community Meals program has

become a tangible sign of hope and care to many

families that are struggling. The church can only

continue to do this meal due to the generous support

of SecondBite.”

– Rev. Graeme Peters, the Anglican Church in

Wonthaggi, VIC.

“The Australian Development and Relief Agency

(ADRA) Centre of Influence are delighted to be

involved with SecondBite. Since we joined the team

it has made a great difference to what assistance

we are able to give our clients who are doing it

tough. To be able to say to a young lady with three

small children that it is all free as she takes her fruit,

vegetables and bread that she could not afford that

week.”

- Helen Hiscock, ADRA Whyalla, SA

7. Social and Environmental Impact

It’s a staggering statistic that in the course of a year,

approximately 8.2 million tonnes of food waste

is generated in Australia. Most of this ends up in

landfill, where it releases greenhouse gases as it

decomposes, including carbon dioxide and methane

(a gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide).

Greenhouse gases can remain in our atmosphere for

thousands of years, and are a major contributor to

climate change.

SecondBite acknowledges that while our food rescue

efforts generate a substantial net-positive benefit for

the environment, our current operations necessitate

the use of refrigerated vehicles and warehouses to

safely transport and store food.

We are always working to improve and refine our

operations to ensure we are being as environmentally

responsible as we can.

Through our food rescue efforts, we have prevented

up to 36.9 million kilograms of greenhouse gases

from entering our atmosphere: this is equivalent

to 3.3 million days of electricity consumption for a

household, or 318,775 50L tanks of petrol consumed.

There has been a focus on health and safety in

FY19. SecondBite have developed and implemented

a safety management system which sets the

foundation for safe work practices. FY20 will see the

safety management mature to ensure a continuous

improvement approach is applied.

We saw a 20% reduction in our Lost Time Injury

Frequency Rate (LTIFR) over the course of the year.

Our people also told us that we have done a great job

so far at communicating how each team member

contributes to achieving our goals and how they

can be successful on their individual roles. Our line

managers were also recognised as genuinely caring

for the people in their teams.

We are working on the feedback which told us where

to improve so we can make SecondBite an even

better place to work.

CORPORATE

PARTNERSHIPS

SecondBite’s story of growth as an organisation is in

no small part thanks to our corporate partnerships,

which are founded on shared purpose and shared

value. We are so grateful for the generous and

ongoing support of these organisations, that enable

SecondBite to continue our work.

SecondBite collects from over 780 Coles sites across

Australia. Since our partnership began in 2011 with

Coles, they have donated enough food from their

supermarkets and distribution centres to provide

more than 86 million meals for people in need as at

the end of FY19.

During FY19, Coles sites donated more than 11.4

million kilograms of food to SecondBite, enough for

more than 22.8 million meals.

Fundraising in-store through Coles Liquor and Coles

Supermarkets this financial year was our strongest

to date. Their generous customers donated over

$2.75 million. These funds were used to support

SecondBite’s daily operations in rescuing and

redistributing surplus food around the country.

CORPORATE

PARTNERSHIPS

7-Eleven and SecondBite jointly won a silver award

for Most Innovative Charity / Employer Partnership

in the 2018 Workplace Giving Excellence Awards, in

recognition of our partnership and workplace giving

initiative that will see SecondBite partner agencies

awarded micro-grants to expand their capacity and

community impact.

FY19 saw 54 7-Eleven staff members donate 167

hours of time to volunteer with SecondBite. A skilled

volunteering project involving 7-Eleven’s Supply Chain

team commenced in February, and will continue

through the next financial year. This project will assist

SecondBite in learning from 7-Eleven’s supply chain

subject experts, and develop our model to be more

efficient and effective in rescue and redistribution of

food.

FeedMORE Grants Scheme

As part of the Good Cause program, 7-Eleven team

members are able to donate a chosen amount from

their regular salary to support SecondBite.

The generous contributions of 7-Eleven staff through

workplace giving fund the FeedMORE Grants

program, providing small grants of $2,500 to local

food relief charities that are part of SecondBite’s

network. These grants are used to expand the

existing programs of local charities, so that they can

provide greater food relief to those who need it most.

SecondBite received over 90 applications for Round

1 of the FeedMORE Grants Program. June saw

the first four grants awarded as part of Round 1

of the SecondBite and 7-Eleven FeedMORE Grants

Program.

Our Community Connect partnership with Nando’s

restaurants around the country grew over the course

of the last financial year from 19 restaurants, to

nearly 100 restaurants donating surplus chicken to

local community meal programs, with more than

26,000kg of chicken donated over the year.

The equivalent of over 52,000 meals

have been donated through our

partnership with Nando’s

100 Nando’s restaurants across

Australia have joined the Community

Connect program

“Harvest Rain Christian Care provides food hampers

to around 120 families in need. The grant was used

to purchase a new fridge and freezer to keep up

with the growing demand for frozen meal packs.

Not only does the initial refrigerated and frozen

food storage capacity enable them to provide

more food assistance, but it directly increases their

capacity to assist many more families in need in the

community.”

VOLUNTEERS

SecondBite’s corporate volunteering program had

one of its most successful years to date with 556

volunteers contributing more than 1,720 hours of

time to support SecondBite in collecting, sorting and

packing food donations ready for distribution.

Given that an average corporate volunteer can pack

120 kilograms of sorted stock in a session, the total

contribution of these corporate groups across the

financial year is approximately 66,720 kilograms

of food ready for SecondBite’s food relief agency

network to use, equivalent to 133,440 meals for

people in need.

Our corporate volunteering program provides

an opportunity for us to engage a wide range of

companies and sectors in our food rescue efforts,

with companies represented spanning retail, finance,

recruitment, transport, education, manufacturing,

communications, publishing, hospitality, legal

services, technology, and energy, among others.

Our 1 Million Meals Pilot Program was launched

with the purpose of redirecting edible food headed

to landfill to support families and individuals

experiencing food insecurity in Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander communities.

SecondBite have employed additional staff, whose

role it is to develop relationships with communities

and service their needs by providing consistent

deliveries of fresh nutritious food.
