Our Core Purpose:
To promote better living through plants
Hoffman Nursery’s core purpose is more pertinent now than ever. We always
believed in the connection between plants and the well-being of people, creatures,
and our planet. Today, research shows that natural areas benefit human
beings in more ways than imagined.
A growing body of research points to the beneficial effects that exposure
to the natural world has on health, reducing stress and promoting healing.
Now, policymakers, employers, and healthcare providers are increasingly
considering the human need for nature in how they plan and operate.

It’s more proof that beautiful landscapes are not just pretty things. They
are morale boosters, places to come together safely, somewhere to clear the
mind, feel the wind on our faces, and find calm. Thankfully, many communities,
municipalities, and organizations maintain and build green spaces.
These outdoor spaces can help us get through uncertain times.
We dedicate this catalog to the natural world and the plants that benefit our
well-being and our planet’s health. Grasses and sedges play an important
role. They add value by creating habitats for birds and butterflies. They help
filter rainwater to keep pollutants from entering our lakes and rivers. We need
these green spaces.

Our cover image comes from the Sassafras All Children’s Playground in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Gretchen Sedaris, horticulturist for the City of Raleigh, tells us about it:
The Sassafras All Children’s playground is designed to provide all children, regardless of ability, the
opportunity to play. Extensive plantings of grasses, perennials, bulbs, and self-seeding annuals have
proven as resilient as the children and remind us how exciting and important our parks are to the
community’s development and well-being.
The playground and our parks, gardens, and other green spaces give us opportunities to explore, dream,
and experience the joy of being outdoors. That’s true no matter what your age. This year’s catalog honors
these green spaces.
We are grateful to the hard-working people who make up the horticultural
world, from researchers to growers, from landscapers and design professionals
to front-line retail plant sellers. We all strive for excellence and offer our
expertise. Most of all, we recognize the power of plants. Let’s take advantage
of grasses, sedges, and all the plants in green spaces. Let’s promote better
living through plants. Let’s connect plants and people when it matters most.
