Hello Readers...

Welcome to Essentially Local’s September-October Edition.

Life is feeling easier since restrictions relaxed but for some the pandemic

continues to impact. We’re pleased to see our community and local

businesses are trying to support each other and we’ve all adapted to the

new way we do things.

essentiallylocal

Supporting Local Business

The beauty, fitness and wellbeing industries have really suffered, given the

green light to open and less than 48 hours later, the government changed

its mind. Businesses like Alchemy Therapy Centre, Happy Bodies Fitness

Centre and Slimming World could have given up but they are staying

strong and finding a way forward. It’s up to us to use them!

Business Working Together

Teaming up with new business Stony Radio is exciting, we’re working hard

with the community to promote local businesses, events and groups.

We have so many ideas and plans that we can’t wait to share once we’re

ready. In the meantime, if you love music head to Stony Radio and join the

community! Good Luck to all the DJs – James, Ali, Em, Chris, Caz and John.

More Exciting Times

We launched our video showcasing local food suppliers ‘Let’s Get the

Party Started’ in August. More are planned and Suzanne will be creating

step-by-step recipe guides. Lots of the scheduled in-person events are

going ahead just in new and innovative ways. Keep supporting our

businesses and volunteers.

Charities

Local charities, not-for-profit and sports clubs are finding new ways to

generate income and provide their services. Harry’s Rainbow Charitable

Trust ran their annual and very popular Jessica’s Rainbow Run as a virtual

event this August and have another event planned for November.

Hopefully you’ll be able to support them.

Christmas

It is still 4 months before the date and while it may upset some of you, I

won’t apologise for plugging our Annual Children’s Drawing Competition.

The exhibition can’t happen in the library but we’re investigating all

options and we’ll run our usual advent countdown on FB. We’d love your

support more than ever – donate prizes, offer space for pictures and

encourage young artists to send in Christmas pictures – details are on the

website, turn to page 6.

We hope you enjoy this edition! In the meantime support our community

and make sure you keep your business essentiallylocal - Emma

Being Generous can

be Rewarding…

Wills are often the primary consideration in the context

of succession planning and rightfully so; the importance

of a well-thought out, competently drafted Will cannot

be overstated. However, if you are one of the “lucky”

ones whose estate may attract a liability to inheritance

tax (IHT) on death, as a tax planning tool, a Will has its

limitations. It is therefore necessary for those looking to

mitigate IHT to take action sooner rather than later and

consider the use of lifetime gifting as part of the wider

estate planning process.

How can Lifetime Gifting Help?

By decreasing the size of your estate during your

lifetime, it is possible to reduce IHT payable on death.

There are various types of gifts that can be made which

are classed as “exempt gifts” and once made, the value is

outside of your estate for IHT purposes.

There is no limit as to how much a person may gift away

during their lifetime to other individuals and if even if

the gift does not classify as an exempt gift, provided the

gift is survived by 7 years, it will have no effect on your

estate’s IHT liability upon death.

Are There any Risks?

The rules surrounding lifetime gifting and IHT are

complex and require consideration and planning. If a

gift is not survived by 7 years, the value of that gift can

fall back into your estate on death for IHT purposes. It

is also important to consider your own financial needs

and whether you can afford to make the gift without

negatively impacting on your own standard of living.

The loss of control of an asset can create issues which

is when the use of an appropriate trust structure might

prove useful. Particular care should be taken when

a gift is contemplated and the donor is intending to

retain a benefit as this could fall foul of HMRC’s “gift

with reservation of benefit” rules. It is also necessary to

consider the potential capital gains tax implications of

any intended gift.

If you feel that you would benefit from IHT planning

advice, our Private Client team are always on hand

to help and would welcome your enquiry. Call us on

Feature

Bunny Buddies

RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks are asking

anyone with a single rabbit to consider finding

their fury bundle a bunny buddy!

Rabbits are social animals and companionship is

important and sadly, many pet owners don’t realise

that solitude can often cause suffering.

The local branch wants to encourage pet owners to

consider suitable friends for their single rabbits. If you

have a neutered rabbit and would like to introduce

a new rabbit then there is a special process called

bonding that needs to be followed. If you adopt from

the branch, staff and volunteers will assist you through

the bonding process free of charge.

If you’re adopting for the first time, you should

consider adopting a pair of rabbits who have already

been bonded.

All their adult rabbits are neutered, vaccinated and

microchipped. The RSPCA asks for a donation of £50

for each rabbit which goes towards this cost.

If you would like to adopt a rabbit or small mammal,

please visit the website and complete the enquiry

form or use the contact details below.

Getting Ticked Off

Long country walks can mean you bring home more

friends than just your dog. Ticks tend to latch onto

dogs and cats, commonly around the face, neck and

ears. Helen Wigley, head nurse at The Vet Centre,

says “If a tick is removed incorrectly it can lead to

minor skin infections that have to be treated or more

serious diseases such as Lyme’s disease. This is why

the use of effective preventative treatments are so

important. Pets travelling to the continent may also

be exposed to tick-borne diseases that are not found

in this country.”

Fleas are still around in the autumn and if they into

your home they’ll happily enjoy the warmth of the

central heating. Treat them before they set up house

and home!

Rays of Sunshine

Autumn sun can still produce harmful UV rays

so if you are planning outdoor activities with

your dogs, ensure you protect them. Canines are

susceptible to potential skin cancer and painful

burns from the sun. They also burn their paws

from hot roads and paths. If it's too hot for your

own feet, then it's too hot for your dog. Avoid

going for walks during the middle of hot days and

make sure to test the temperature of the paths

you are walking on. Walk in the shade or carry

your dog if you need to cross hot paths and roads.

For advice on preventative treatments for ticks,

fleas & worms or the management of burns in

animals book an appointment with one of the

nurses at Maids Moreton or Cherry Lane.

Getting Back to Life with a Few Changes

Life may still not quite be perfect, but as our beauty, health and

wellbeing businesses begin to get back to normal, they’ll soon be

helping us to feel better.

GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Women, children, key workers and

BAME groups, have struggled, more

than ever, with sleep deprivation since

lockdown. It is often anxiety-induced –

from isolation, fear, financial problems

and the juggles of work and home.

TOP TIP

Stick to a routine

and get outside

to improve your

sleep.

HOME WORK IMPACTS SLEEP

Avoid working at home impacting your sleep:

• Stick to a routine, go to bed and get up at your

usual times.

• Reset your body clock with natural light - walk

before starting work.

• Stick to work hours, taking regular breaks and

don’t be available at all times.

• Drink water and have 10 minutes outside after

lunch instead of caffeine.

• Get social interaction with colleagues through

online platforms like Zoom

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

A healthier weight and

lifestyle is shown to reduce

the more serious effects of

COVID-19 and can improve

sleep. If you’re keen to get

healthier by losing weight or

getting fitter speak to Happy

Bodies Fitness Centre and

Slimming World.

DISABILITY MAY BE HIDDEN

Under 11s, those with disabilities, hidden

health conditions like breathing difficulties and

mental health conditions, dementia or autism

are exempt from wearing face coverings. The

government provide phone-based options or

exemption cards or wear a hidden disability

badge with pride.

the most hygiene

conscious industries

before COVID, yet

beauty services are

taking even more

precautions. Give

Weight Loss

Referral Scheme

Obesity puts you in the COVID 19

high risk category making weight

management more important than

ever.

Northants residents can now apply for

the County Council's Slimming World

referral scheme for 12 weeks of funded

sessions (subject to certain criteria).

It takes 10 minutes from application

to decision and voucher. Once

confirmed, contact local Slimming World

representative Jane Hammonds to book

your space on one of the small and

socially distanced courses.

In January, 32 new Northants referral

members lost 63 stone between them,

with target weights reached and

diabetes medication reduced. One

person is doing One Million Steps for

Diabetes UK.

GETTING FITTER

If you are starting out with exercise, join a gym and get a

proper programme that helps you to start slowly and build

gradually. Warm-up before exercise, eat at least 2 hours

before you start and take regular sips of water to keep

hydrated. Listen to your body and your trainer but also

accept that a workout should be a little hard and it’s OK to be

slightly out-of-breath!

Check the CE Mark

Face coverings have become normal, but did you

know face masks and coverings are treated differently

in law?

Face masks are designed to be personal protective

equipment. This means they need to show a CE Mark

to comply with the legal standards. Trading Standards

is aware that some products are being sold with an

illegally applied CE Mark - always buy from a reputable

seller.

Trading Standards is also seeing masks carrying a

KN95 Mark or a Chinese Standard number GB2626

– these marks do not provide confirmation of

independent testing and should not be on sale in

the United Kingdom. A retailer selling them risks

committing a criminal offence.

Face coverings include a scarf wrapped around your

face or a purpose-made face covering. High Street

fashion retailers are introducing some great options to

their ranges.

If you make face coverings to sell, follow the

Government’s guidance to ensure you comply with

the General Product Safety Regulations - assets.

The Essence of Local Producing and

Local Eating

The sound and smells of harvest captures the essence of the season and

readiness to prepare for autumn. While farmers prepare the produce, local

pubs, restaurants and cafés continue to cook and serve us. August’s Eat Out to

Help Out voucher helped us as well as eateries, now it’s up to us!

FIELDS OF JOY

The Fruity Farmer completed their Oilseed rape

harvest at the end of July - during the wave of

very hot weather. Sadly, crop disease has reduced

the amount of oilseed rape grown this year

across the UK.

Fear not though, The Fruity Farmer at Stoke

Goldington still has plenty for their coldpressed

Rapeseed Oil! Excitingly, along with

the vegetable oil, the crop will also be used for

biodiesel and other industrial uses.

The Fruity Farmer makes approximately 330

litres of Oil from one tonne of rapeseed. The oil

crushes out at about 30% oil with the sheep

and pigs on the farm feeding on the leftover

high protein 'meal'. The Rapeseed Oil settles for

around 6 weeks before bottling.

MAAYA INDIAN KITCHEN & BAR IS BACK

Maaya Indian Kitchen & Bar is open again for

guests to enjoy their award-winning dishes.

A complete makeover now allows for social distancing

measures, hand sanitising facilities, additional space

between tables and a dedicated ‘serving table’. Staff

wear PPE and they’ve had thorough and regular deep

cleans of the restaurant. Happily they are able to offer

their full restaurant and bar menus.

The Maaya team is also encouraging you to look at

the online menu before arrival to reduce unnecessary

contact. Menus will be available and thoroughly

sterilised before and after use.

It’s only been a few months since we

teamed up with Stony Radio and they

began broadcasting - a partnership that is

joining the community more than ever.

Residents from Milton Keynes and South

Northants, current and past, stay connected

through the radio and magazine. The

2 ventures offer a fab mix of music,

information, community goings on and

business between them.

Every age, and almost every taste and

genre is catered for on Stony Radio as

more DJs join to bring exciting chat and

great music. Aside from music there are

interviews with interesting residents, like

author Sarah Pinsborough and more is

planned.

Tuesday evenings attracts a younger

audience with up and coming DJ Em Tully’s

choice of chart music. Listeners love her

slightly off-beat and different choice of

tracks – as she explores the latest in musical

offerings.

Ali T is more into an eclectic mix of jazzy

vibes and soul. Her laid back approach is

sure to calm your mood and lift your spirit

every Thursday evening.

Main man, Tullyman, starts his shows with

theme night Wednesdays. He can find a

tune for everything – so far sugar, names

and feelings – we can’t wait to hear what’s

next. Friday evenings are request night - it’s

all about you and what you like! Saturday

mornings are his chill time and sport. Young

Harry Blythe joins his Saturday show as

sports reporter to bring a round-up of local

football and more.

Waggy Tales Dog Day Care

Opens its Doors

This August a very excited Lydia Matthews finally opened her

dream business, Waggy Tales, day care for dogs, after 2 years

in the making!

Lydia’s mission involved her whole family including Digby the

Corgi, her own pooch! Now, as possibly the first of its kind in the

area, Waggy Tales offer more of a children’s nursery than dog care!

Ex-veterinary care assistant Lydia, drew on her experience and

qualifications to back up her ideas, designing the day care to

amuse and stimulate your dog. The rural setting provides plenty

of inside and outside space with exercise equipment, toys

and relaxing areas. Every dog gets the right amount of mental

stimulation and rest, as you work. Staff monitor the dogs at all

times in dedicated spaces separating excitable young pups and

senior dogs. Her onsite grooming salon will provide an extra bonus

for busy workers, when it opens in a couple months!

Dogs can arrive onsite from 7.30am and stay until 6.30pm or there

is a half day option. A sign in and out system with double gate/

door keeps your dog’s safety central to their care. Of course, no day

is complete without a lot of fuss and cuddles!

Cloudy2Clear, A Local

Service With A Smile.

I think we can all agree that the sooner

we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful

corona virus the better. That said, there

are also some heart warming positives

that we can take out of this situation.

It has often been said that we can only

really get to know one another and realise

what is truly important in times of crisis.

I think few would argue that in this case

what has proven to be important is local

community spirit.

All C2C

employees

operate a

strict social

distancing

policy.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear

windows Stephen Moon it became clear that

these values have been held dear for a number

of years. Since starting the business some years

ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their

core values of supporting the local community

by providing a service that saves the public

money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the

glass to be replaced and not the whole window

Social distancing in operation

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented

“Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our

community through the last financial crisis in

2008 due to the savings that can be made in

using our service. Unfortunately we might be

going through something similar again soon

and the public can rest assured that we will be

there to help again”.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CABLES

The options to make your home smart with intelligent, integrated systems

are endless and not as expensive as you may think. They allow you to

control your whole-house - lighting, heating and security and more.

Data cabling provides the basic infrastructure for smart devices allowing

you to zone music or stream TV shows into di erent rooms, game and

even turn the heating on before you get home.

Cabling also gives a higher level of connectivity with full internet speed

throughout your home, instead of just one or two rooms. It is a long term

investment which allows for easy upgrades to faster, new tech when it is

released.

Cables can be hidden under oors, in walls, in the loft and behind furniture

and on external walls. Importantly, wired home networks are very

desirable as they add value with our increasing data consumption and

more smart devices - they are standard in most new builds.

With solutions for every age and need, smart up your

home with MKL Cable Solutions.

HIDING THE OFFICE DESK

AWAY

Sharing the kitchen table with children’s

school work, lunch and anything

else certainly isn’t an ideal solution

for a home office. A small, simple

wall-mounted, fold down desk neatly

tucked into a bedroom is less intrusive

and is an ideal place to work and

escape for a bit of peace and quiet.

Bespoke versions will fit your space and

generally your budget.

COVID

Rogues

Rogue tradespeople are taking

advantage of restrictions. Protect

yourself and your money:

Cold calling – respectable

businesses rarely cold call. If you

are interested, take their card,

research the company and get

quotes from other businesses.

Very cheap service – the trader

may be amateur, inexperienced

or not know how to price a job

properly. As the costs increase

he may cut corners or ask you for

more money - ‘If it sounds too

good to be true, it probably is!’

Always ask for a quote -

legitimate traders should give

quotes, while rogue traders may

be less willing. A quote is a fixed

price and once agreed must be

adhered to. An estimate is an

educated guess about the costs; it

is not fixed, so could go up.

Contact information – if the

trader doesn’t give proper contact

information, he may not wish to

be contacted if poor workmanship

is discovered.

Payment – if you pay cash for

the job in advance the trader

could leave without finishing (or

even starting). A legitimate trader

should not ask you to do this.

Protect yourself – schemes like

Buy With Confidence, Which?

Trusted Traders vary, select one

which offers intervention should

things go wrong.

Making the Most of Being Outside

While we still have a few days of sun and the nights are still long enough to be outside after

work, make the most of your garden and local green areas.

STONY STRATFORD BLOOMED

Although Regional and National Britain in

Bloom Competitions were postponed, as

lockdown eased regular volunteers, with many

new ones weeded the perennial beds and

tidied. Residents around the town watered

planters near their homes and offices. Together,

they encouraged vibrant red, pink and white

geraniums to bloom and keep everyone

cheerful.

The virtual plant sale made an incredible

£500 - £250 to the Food Bank and £250 to SSIB

funds. SSIB didn’t ask for business sponsors this

year, however DW Roberts and May Business

Consultancy donated anyway. The team are

incredibly grateful.

ATTACK WHEN THREATENED

Chris Ainsley of Wasp Nest Control Services

explains wasps help to control garden

insects and normally only attack if feeling

threatened. As summer progresses, they

can get aggressive while searching for

sweet fruit – as one nest can be home to

about 5,000 adults!

Professional wasp controller Chris

brings technical knowledge, protective

equipment, tools to access the nests safely

as well stronger insecticides. At this time of

year one nest can be larger than a football

which means DIY methods might not

control the wasps and could be dangerous.

Reduce risks by keeping dustbins closed

and away from your house as well as

treating a nest a soon as possible.

Give Chris a call 07957 906310

WOLVERTON & GREENLEYS-IN-BLOOM

The town’s colour scheme looked fantastic over the summer.

Baskets were moved to the Agora railings and the War Memorial

producing a lovely show and geraniums in doorstep planters

flowered prolifically. In early June W&GIB volunteers planted new

bedding plants - thanks to recruits Beckie, Jenny, Emily, Geoff, Jess

and Fred, Jo and Linda.

W&GIB volunteers filled new bins and flower troughs with plants, at

Greenleys, while Axiom B watered.

Keep on

Growing

Squash is like a liquorice all sort!

It comes in all shapes and sizes –

massive pumpkins to the smaller

Butternut Squash. They are all

relatively easy to grow and fun for

children and cooked in the right way

very tasty and nutritional.

Botanically it is actually a fruit

because it contains seeds, however

others would argue that it forms part

of the plants stems and is therefore

a vegetable! Squash form from the

flowers on the plant, which are also

edible.

It’s the nutritional benefits that

are really attractive. Firstly it’s a

good source for fibre and minerals

including vitamins A, C, E and B. It

even offers calcium, magnesium and

zinc.

Other nutritional benefits are its

carotenoids that may help to protect

your eye health along with vitamin

A. Beta-carotene found in butternut

squash can support the immune

system and help it to function well.

Eaten with other fruits and

vegetables, it will also contribute

to maintaining the health of your

bones and digestion. The fibre is

particularly good for reducing risk of

heart disease, bowel cancer and type

2 diabetes.

Now turn to page 19 and cook

Suzanne’s latest recipe!

In the future entry cost for the Britain-in-Bloom competition will go

towards Wolverton and Greenleys own competition to make the

town look as good as possible on limited funds.

If your door opens directly on to the street, WGIB can provide a

planter, free of charge or remove them - email or phone the Town

Council. The floral displays are creating a town to be proud of.

Skyline’s Community Service

Throughout lockdown, Skyline Taxis carried on

providing a taxi service 24 hours a day, every day.

Their increased safety measures

ensured customers continued to

get to where they need to go to

every day. From taking key workers

to their places of work or collecting

and delivering essential items,

Skyline drivers were available and

the positive reviews kept coming

in.

As restrictions lift and everyone is returning to their new

normal - enjoying a meal out, visiting friends or getting to

work, they guarantee to get you to your destination safely.

In addition, they are continuing to offer their collect and

delivery service. It’s easy to book, track and pay directly

through their app and payment is fast, safe, secure and

contactless.

If you need a taxi service that

you can rely on, download the

Skyline apps and get booking!

TOP TIP

Review of The

Highway Code to

improve road safety

closes 27 October

2020

MOT and COVID

If your car, van or motorcycle was due an

MOT between 30 March and 31 July 2020,

because of the pandemic, the expiry date

was extended by 6 months. If your MOT

ran out on the 1 August however, there is

no excuse, your MOT was due as normal.

Unfortunately if you didn’t get it done, you

could be fined.

MOT Testing has Changed

There is a new 5

level of category

for testing

defects during

an MOT. Pass

means your

car meets the

legal standard

while at the

other extreme

a dangerous

score means your car poses a direct risk to

road safety, or the environment and will

fail. Under-inflated tyres, contaminated

brake fluid or brake pad warning lights not

working or missing pads or discs will also

cause a fail. You’ll also need to check your

reversing lights and daytime running lights.

Stay safe and don’t take any risks.

Insurance During Corona

In April Admiral Insurance gave a £25

refund to its 4.4 million customers as

drivers asked why they should pay for a

service they cannot use.

If your insurance needs have changed

due to the coronavirus outbreak, check

with your insurer if you are entitled to

a reduction or refund. Reduced annual

miles and add-ons like replacement keys,

breakdown cover and courtesy car could

be a reason, however, protection from

theft, vandalism and damage is not. If

you make changes and your needs revert

back, your insurance will not automatically

switch back. Always notify your insurer of

all changes or else you could invalidate

your insurance.
