KEEPING THE OLD
Designed and built simultaneously with the adjoining twin neighbour, this
addition to one of a pair of historic attached cottages just footsteps from
Manly village and beach has a unique and truly local story.
The cottages were the original home of the Sly brothers – pioneers of Surf
Life Saving in Australia – who resided there in the late 1800s. Nearly 120
years later, after multiple owners and modifications, two new owners came
together from opposite sides of the globe to preserve the remaining cottages
and to allow them to evolve.
With contrasting briefs and timelines, both owners agreed to work with
the one architect – Archisoul – and one builder – Newmark Constructions –
to create a unified but unique addition to both cottages.
While the fronts of the cottages were given the same aesthetic treatment,
that’s where the similarities ended. This project was “… two different houses
that share a common wall”, says principal director of Archisoul Architects Jo
Gillies.
The juxtaposition between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ is evident in the
southern cottage, pictured across these pages.
Dwell understands its non-identical twin (on left of picture opposite page top
right) was sold in the mid $3 million range in just under 30 days in June this
year, through Laura Pritchard, Bergelin Estate Agents, in conjunction with
Jake Rowe from Rowe Partners.
