Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Silence is creative and powerful and gives us hope. Silence is God’s greatest blessing. God became one with humanity in silence. It allows us to be one with all of creation, with the moon and the stars and all of the creatures God has made. The smallest particle of creation radiates with beauty. Silence allows us to soar beyond ourselves and connect in ways that the mind can only imagine." ~ An excerpt from this week's LPI Gospel reflection "Silence is creative and powerful and gives us hope. FIRST READING
A reading from the First Book of Kings (19:9a, 11-13a)
(Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord)
At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took
shelter. Then the Lord said to him, “Go outside and stand on the
mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.” A strong and
heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the
Lord—but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an
earthquake—but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake
there was fire—but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire
there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his
face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM (85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14)
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. (Psalm 85:8)
I will hear what God
proclaims; the Lord —
for he proclaims peace.
Near indeed is his
salvation to those who
fear him, glory dwelling
in our land. (R)
Kindness and truth
shall meet; justice and
peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring
out of the earth, and
justice shall look down
from heaven. (R)
The Liturgy of the Word
The Lord himself will
give his benefits; our
land shall yield its
increase. Justice shall
walk before him, and
prepare the way of his
steps. (R)
SECOND READING
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (9:1-5)
(I could wish that I were accursed for the sake of my own people)
Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience
joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have
great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that
I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own
people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the
adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship,
and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to
the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
—The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (cf. Psalm 130:5)
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for the Lord. (R)
GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (14:22-33)
(Command me to come to you on the water)
After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and
precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he
went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there
alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about
by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking
on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said
to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He
said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward
Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and,
beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched
out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you
doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the
boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
—The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and
invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all
ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial
with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven, (bow your head) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the
Virgin Mary, and became man. (lift your head)For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose againon the third day in accordance with
the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of
sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Before the pandemic started, the Pastoral Advisory
Committee (Parish Council) and I had begun to share
a strategic plan for St. Rose. For months we studied
our demographics, ministries and facilities (just to
name a few.) Due to the shutdown, we were unable
to present the entire plan to renew, repair and
revitalize our campus. One specific area that could
not wait to be addressed was the former, and now
vacant, convent. After getting estimates for repair
costs and realizing the building was no longer
needed, we decided to get a formal appraisal and
put the building up for sale. The former convent was
placed on market in June. Each potential buyer was
made aware of our conditions and restrictions
regarding its future use. Just recently we reviewed
four good offers. Each offer was studied by
our committee as well as our parish attorney.
One offer was clearly the best and therefore
we entered into an agreement with that party.
Although the sale is not final, and I cannot give you
all the details at this time, it was important for to
share this good news with all of you. We will
continue to update on the progress over the coming
weeks and months.
St. Teresa Benedicta
of the Cross
(Edith Stein)
1891-1942
She was born, Edith Stein, into
an observant Jewish family in
Breslau on October 12, 1891, the
youngest of 11, as her family were
celebrating Yom Kippur, that
most important Jewish festival,
the Feast of Atonement. Her
father died when she was two
years old, and her hard-working
and devout mother took over the care of her large family and
the father’s timber business. However, as a teenager, Edith lost
her faith in God. “I consciously decided, of my own volition, to
give up praying,” she said.
She was a talented student, and after finishing school
with top results, she chose to study philosophy in Gottingen
where she encountered many new ways of thinking, under
the mentorship of Edmund Husserl. She became his pupil and
teaching assistant, and he later tutored her for a doctorate.
Husserl’s phenomenology unwittingly led many of his pupils
to the Christian faith. In G6ttingen Edith Stein also met the
philosopher Max Scheler, who directed her attention to Roman
Catholicism. Her brilliant mind kept searching for the truth. As
part of God’s plan she kept bumping into Catholicism until at
last at a friend’s house she picked up the autobiography of St
Teresa of Jesus and read it all through the night, saying to herself
as she finished reading at dawn: “This is the truth”.
On January 1, 1922, Edith was baptized and received into
the Catholic Church. It was a decision that her mother was never
able to accept. Edith, however, continued teaching philosophy
and writing. Slowly she began to sense another call; to unite her
life with the fate of her own Jewish people.
Her vocation took a turn of events when Nazi law made
it no longer possible for her to continue teaching and lecturing.
She was admitted to the Discalced Carmelite monastery in
Cologne the following October and received the religious habit
of the Order as a novice in April 1934, taking the religious name
Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (“Teresa blessed by the Cross”).
The concern of her superiors for her safety resulted in
her transfer in 1938 together with her sister Rosa, by then also a
convert and an extern Sister of the monastery, to the Carmelite
monastery in Echt, Netherlands. However, that state was also
invaded by the Nazis in 1940. For a while they remained undisturbed
St. Maximilian Kolbe
1894-1941
St. Maximilian Kolbe was
born in Poland in 1894 and
at about the age of 10 had
a vision of the Virgin Mary.
She offered him a white
crown and a red crown, representing purity and martyrdom.
He chose both, a foreshadowing of his life to
come. In 1910, he joined the Conventual Franciscan Order.
He was sent to study in Rome where founded the
M.I. on October 16, 1917. Ordained a priest in 1918, Father
Maximilian returned to Poland and began his untiring
missionary activity, starting a monthly magazine and
establishing two evangelization centers dedicated to
the Immaculate Virgin: Niepokalanów, the “City of the
Immaculata,” in Poland, and Mugenzai no Sono in
Japan, and envisioned missionary centers worldwide.
To better “win the world for Christ through the Immaculata,”
the friars utilized the most modern techniques.
St. Maximilian used short-wave radio and planned to
build a motion picture studio. In 1939, during WWII, at
Niepokalanów he welcomed thousands of refugees,
especially Jews. In 1941, St. Maximilian was arrested by
the Nazis and taken to the Auschwitz concentration
camp. There he offered his life for another prisoner and
was condemned to slow death in a starvation bunker.
He died on August 14, 1941, with an injection of carbolic
acid. Pope John Paul II canonized him as a Saint and
Martyr of Charity on October 10, 1982. St. Maximilian
Kolbe is considered a patron of journalists, families, prisoners,
the pro-life movement, the chemically addicted
and those with eating disorders.
St. Maximilian was a ground-breaking theologian.
His insights on the Immaculate Conception
anticipated the Marian theology of the Second Vatican
Council and further developed the Church’s understanding
of Mary’s role in God’s Plan of salvation. His
Marian thought re-echoes in the Marian teaching of
both St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
