8 SCHOOLS AND YOUNG PEOPLE PERFORMERS: Justin Godwin- Samuel and Conor Jason Musicians play at the Albert Hall TWo musicians from a Dagenham school hit the big time with a chance to play at the Royal Albert Hall. Justin Godwin-Samuel and Conor Jason, both 12, were picked for a music workshop with MoBo award winner and Britain’s leading saxophone player, YolanDa Brown. The duo from All Saints Catholic School also joined 100 other young sax players for a group performance at the landmark London venue. John Jette, All Saints’ head of music, said: “Both Justin and Conor had a great time at the workshop and performance. “We’re very proud of them as they were the only ones from the borough chosen to attend.” The workshop is part of an education programme allowing young Londoners to play with famous musicians. Fireworks follow from phantoms THERE’S a variety of events for Halloween and Bonfire Night during the school half-term holiday. At Dagenham Library, scary story time, Halloween treats and a monsters ball are all taking place for children on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 october. There’s also a free spooky puppet show, crafts and a spider hunt at the Millennium Centre at Eastbrookend Country Park on the Wednesday. It’s on from noon onwards. To book, call the country park’s rangers on 020 8227 2332. And for adults, there’s a Halloween ghost tour at Valence House Museum. It’s also on 31 October, from 7.30pm. The Round Table’s annual charity firework display is at Barking Park on Sunday 4 November from 4pm, with fireworks starting at 6pm. Admission is £5 for adults or £1 for children. For more details, go to www.lbbd. gov.uk School wins green award YouNGSTERS at a Barking school are top of the class at finding ecofriendly ways of travelling to school. Northbury Junior School got a gold accreditation plaque from Transport for London for sustainable travel. They are the only school in the borough to receive the award, for encouraging pupils to cycle or walk in. Rohey Syed, who is a governor for the school and its ‘green champion’, said: “We’re very proud to have children cycling here. Hopefully it’s something they will carry on when they get older. “The decline in the number of car journeys has been drastic.” FAMOuS names from the world of sport joined local youngsters at an event to give racism in sport the boot. Hundreds of school children from Barking and Dagenham and nearby boroughs, went to the Kick It out day at the CEME Innovation Centre in Rainham. They took part in talks and fun activities led by sports stars such as England cricket legend Graham Gooch and West Ham united footballer James Tomkins. Players from Dagenham & Redbridge FC were also there. Gareth Murray, head of PE at Warren Comprehensive School, said: “We’ve been coming here for seven years. It’s fantastic. Dagenham’s under-18 coach, Russell Yellop, said: “It’s great for Dagenham and great for the club that a touring side came here to play. “It’s a friendly, but it would still have been nice to win. 26 October 2012 CRAFTS: Adults and children alike can learn about other cultures during the Iroko workshops Funding boost for creative workshop A FAMILY arts project in the borough has received a funding boost of nearly £50,000. The Iroko Theatre Company provide afterschool creative workshops for parents and children living in Barking and Dagenham. The project has been running since 2009 and was due to end next year. Thanks to the cash from the Big Lottery Fund, Iroko can keep it going until 2014. They are running activities at the Barking Learning Centre, Dagenham Library, Valence Library, St Joseph’s Primary School and Beam Primary School. 9 Dawn Riches, a Barking Learning Centre team leader, said: “The skills Iroko provide for families are amazing. “There isn’t just practical learning, but the joy of sharing learning with a family member – learning about another culture with other cultures.” “What makes this project different and special is its ability to reach everyone.
