The covenant is an agreement between Barking and Dagenham Council and organisations such as the police and local charities. The council’s leader, Cllr Liam Smith, said: “Barking and Dagenham has a long history and association with Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. We’re determined to continue that. Brave “We value the contributions and, most importantly, the sacrifices these brave men and women make for our country, and the pride with which they perform their duties. “People in Barking and Dagenham appreciate it and the council is determined to give something back.” The agreement encourages people to support the armed services and their families. Council help will include housing military personnel moving to the 26 October 2012 Extra help for armed forces area, and discounts on local leisure activities. Veterans who leave the forces and apply for a job in the borough will get a guaranteed interview if they meet the minimum criteria for the post. Local charities and groups who are part of the covenant will help with fundraising, finding former military people work, or volunteering. Ed Balls’ praise for new skills academy MeLISSA PAGe START OF A JOURNEY: Shadow Chancellor ed Balls MP with students STuDENTS and staff at Barking’s Technical Skills Academy welcomed shadow chancellor Ed Balls MP to its official opening. Mr Balls praised the facility, which provides vocational training and education for young people aged 16 to 19. Venture The £14 million centre is a joint venture between the borough council and Barking & Dagenham College. Mr Balls said: “It’s fabulous to be here at the start of what is a big journey for the college, young people and the town. “This is a first-class facility and it’s needed for 21st century education. RoBIN Hood Shopping Parade in Longbridge Road, Barking, found a special way to celebrate its recent revamp. It put on an open day, complete with stalls selling handmade gifts, jewellery and toys. There was face painting and a bouncy castle for children and Barking and Dagenham Council’s Community Safety Team was on hand to offer safety advice. The event showed residents the new forecourt work and encouraged people to shop locally. Visitors were also asked their opinion on what sort of artwork should be installed in the four corners of the new paved area.
