Sue Bramley Centre, Bastable
HARMoNY House has simple aims.
It offers training, services and childcare
locally, and helps people learn
from one another for everyone’s
benefit.
Its origins can be traced to the
arrival in Dagenham of nuns from the
Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of
Jesus and Mary, in 1928. Their order,
focused on teaching and nursing, set
up a convent off Goresbrook Road
and got involved in local schools.
Project
In 1993 the sisters decided on a major
project. They wanted “a new centre
for learning that would incorporate
all beliefs”. From this came Harmony
House, in Baden Powell Close, built
to provide “a coherent service of education,
training, health and other services
in a multicultural setting”.
The elegant building officially
opened in 2001. Its focal point is
the beautiful Sacred Heart, featuring
a fountain and marbled columns.
The area is meant to offer a place for
“reflection, meditation and prayer”.
Thursday 8 November, 7.30pm-
9.30pm. White Horse.
The sisters began running community
services from Harmony House
while working to cover its costs. To
help keep the charity and commercial
aspects separate, they made their
first secular appointment in 2008,
giving Marie Kearns the job of chief
executive.
The following year, Harmony
House became a “community interest
company”, running as an independent
body overseen by a board of directors.
Marie set to work creating services
to meet the centre’s aims. She
brought some useful experience to
the job, after 20 years in social work,
as well as senior roles in the local
NHS trust.
Nursery provision, for children
aged between three months and five
years, was a priority. And Marie
wanted more learning programmes
at Harmony House in areas such as
computing and English as a second
language.
Today, Harmony House also runs:
n the Golden Days Care Agency, registered
to provide services such as care
