their bit for this year’s
Royal British Legion Poppy
appeal.
That’s the message from the organiser
of the fundraising event, which starts in
the borough this weekend.
Volunteers
Sue Brockwell told thenews: “We are
always looking for volunteers to help
distribute and collect
the boxes.
“We also need
collectors in the
three main shopping
stores we are in this year.
Local shops that would
like a poppy box can contact
their local Royal British Legion
branch to make arrangements.”
Last year, volunteers in supermarkets
and shopping centres collected more than
Sport club saved for
future generations
THE future of an important sport facility in
Dagenham is secure, keeping the borough’s
sporting heritage strong following London
2012.
The May & Baker Sports and Social
Club, off Dagenham Road, will run as a
charity once its owners move out. Medicine
makers Sanofi are leaving the site after they
finish production there next year.
Factory
Some of it will become the new Businesseast
commerce park. Now, more than 50 acres of
green belt land next to Sanofi’s factory have
been saved for community use.
The existing club took the May & Baker
name from the company that ran the whole
site before becoming part of Sanofi.
A new charity, the May & Baker Eastbrook
Community Club, will now manage the land.
It’s a partnership between the current club,
Eastbrook School next door and Barking and
Dagenham Council.
The Mayor of Barking and Dagenham,
Paul Gilham
paul.gilham@lbbd.gov.uk
Cllr Tony Ramsay, chairs a group who oversee
the regeneration of the Sanofi site.
He said: “The green belt land and the
sports and social club have given the community
leisure facilities for generations.
We’re delighted that Sanofi want to pass this
on once they leave Dagenham.
“But it’s essential that a credible organisation
takes control of such an important asset.
Charity status for the new May & Baker
Eastbrook Community Club is an important
milestone in the process. I’m very pleased to
be one of its trustees.”
n Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club
already use the May & Baker land for
training.
The new club will offer sports including
rugby, cricket, tennis, squash and running, in
association with the Dagenham 88s Running
Club, as well as football.
£27,000 for the appeal in the borough.
The charity’s biggest national fundraising
event, it runs until 11 November.
Each year, Remembrance Day honours
people who have fought and died
in conflicts from the First World War
onwards.
For a small donation, people can wear
a poppy to show their support.
You can pick up a poppy
at Morrisons in Wood Lane,
Sainsbury’s in Chadwell Heath High
Street and Tesco at Goodmayes.
There will also be poppy
boxes in local schools and shops
Flats built to help
dementia sufferers
Susan Whitear
susan.whitear@lbbd.gov.uk
NEW flats and bedsits for local people
with dementia have been completed in
Chadwell Heath.
Fews Lodge has 13 unfurnished
spaces for rent. They are available to
individuals in the early stages of the
illness.
They are on the same site as Kallar
Lodge, a home that provides 24-hour
dementia care.
Support
Service manager Christopher Neal said:
“There will be a personalised plan of care
and support for each tenant.
“Staff will help residents to lead the
most independent life possible.
“We are committed to providing a
quality service and involving tenants in
how we can work together.”
The refurbishment took 19 weeks.
It included six flats, seven bedsits, a
common room and kitchenette. Barking
and Dagenham Council will manage and
rent out the flats.
Cllr Linda Reason, cabinet member
for adult services, said: “I’m delighted
this fantastic facility is now open. It’s
first class, as we would expect for our
residents.
“Fews Lodge will provide specialist
support for people who really need it.”
BICYCLE MADE FOR TWO: Diane Russell with British Cycling’s Tony Harvey
Raising awareness
of sight problems
BARkiNg Learning Centre was the
venue as locals found out what’s
on offer in the borough to support
people with sight problems.
Dozens visited information stalls
and joined in activities at the event,
for World Sight Day.
Visitors had the chance to take
part in tandem cycling for the
visually impaired. And supervised
blindfolded guide dog walks gave
sighted people an idea of what it’s
like to be blind.
Diane Russell from Dagenham,
UNVEILING: Fews Lodge and Kallar Lodge service manager Chris Neal with Cllr Linda Reason and Cllr Phil Waker
who is blind, tried out the tandem
cycling from British Cycling’s Cycle
She said: “i’ve not done cycling.
it’s a great idea to get people out
and about.
Activities
“i hope people of all ages try out
different activities.”
End of 2012 green
bin collections
GReeN wheelie bin
collections for garden waste
have finished for the year.
Cllr Mick McCarthy,
Barking and Dagenham
Council’s cabinet member
for environment, said: “As
the winter comes on, fewer
people use the green bins. It
isn’t economical to continue
the rounds, so we suspend
them until the spring.”
They will start again
in March, but you can
book a spot in two special
collections before then –
one in January and another
in February. Dates will be
announced nearer the time.
“In the meantime, if
you have garden cuttings
you need to dispose of,
Frizlands Reuse and
Recycling Centre is open
all year,” Cllr McCarthy
added. “You can visit www.
NOSTALGIA / HAVE YOUR SAY
New bins make the
area look more untidy
than it was before
I Do not believe it! After complaining
to all and sundry about the state of
Dagenham with so many dustbins
outside every house, making this
borough look like a sight for very sore
eyes, I have just been informed by a
council employee that we will soon be
receiving yet another bin, to put our
waste paper in.
I would like to know who is
responsible. Don’t they realise that
any pride the residents might have
had in the past because they lived in
Dagenham is being eradicated at the
speed of sound?
What would be the point of trying
to make an effort to improve the area,
when it would seem that the council is
working against this principle?
There is no way that, with at
least three rubbish bins outside every
house, pride will be restored while the
council continues to drag down the
appearance of this borough.
There’s more to life than just
money – with the money spent on
buying more bins, the council could
have put a decent and safe pavement
in Cornshaw Road.
Neglect can be seen all around
Dagenham as the council spend our
money on rubbish bins, while telling
us they cannot do the things that are
really needed because they haven’t got
the funds.
With this borough looking so
rough as rubbish bins litter every
highway and byway, it would appear
an open invitation to fly-tippers.
I think it’s only right that the name
of the borough reflects what type of
area it is. With this in mind, I suggest
that the council rename Dagenham to
Bin City – a true reflection of what it’s
doing for our area.
THE CoUNCIL SaYS: one of the
main reasons we are bringing in the
brown wheelie bins is to make the
streets tidier. The orange bags had
a tendency to split and blow around,
which could cause an eyesore.
Investing in a third wheelie bin
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Write to: Letters, thenews, Civic Centre, Dagenham RM10 7BN or email thenews@lbbd.gov.uk
– please include your full name and address, along with a daytime telephone number for verification
purposes. We cannot guarantee publication, and if your letter does not include your contact details, we will
not print it at all (although we will consider withholding names in some circumstances). Letters may be edited.
i AM writing to complain about
the front page from the previous
issue of thenews. i was very
offended by the piece titled
“Lots to do for people over 50”.
i am 51 and am not, in my
opinion, old. i work full time and
have two children who live at
home.
My daughter is 15 and takes
up a great deal of my time.
Although it is good that the
borough is trying to do things
for ‘older’ people, i have neither
the time nor inclination to take
will actually save money because the
scheme will be much cheaper to run
than the orange bags, which cost
around £300,000 a year. The brown
bins aren’t just for waste paper, but
also for plastic bottles, tin cans, thin
cardboard, telephone directories and
catalogues.
Help to give families
affected by cancer a
better festive season
MY name is Lin Mathieson and I’m a
trustee of the Mark McCarthy charity,
which provides help for patients in the
area terminally ill with cancer.
We urgently need people to help
provide non-perishable goods for
these patients.
This year, we are expecting a
high demand due to the economic
downturn, and these people are really
struggling.
We make up Christmas hampers
for the families of people we help. For
the children in these families, we provide
a small gift, as in many cases it
will be their last Christmas as a family
together.
We will pick up these goods ourselves
from anyone who is able to
donate. our contact number is 07821
Thank you for taking the time
to read this letter. You can find out
Those were The days
THE previous issue of thenews
mentioned the planned closure of king
george’s maternity unit. That took me
back a bit – not because any of my
Lynchlings were born there, but because
i once worked in the place.
This was back in the late 50s. The
hospital was then on Eastern Avenue, in
ilford, and i was between ships.
Engineer
After national service in the Royal Navy, i
went to sea in the merchant one as an
engineer, sailing to New Zealand and
along America and Canada’s eastern
seaboard.
it was after leaving a ship in New York,
having done a year as its fifth engineer,
that I came home to find a shipping
slump, making new berths hard to find.
I was upset by your ‘over 50s’ headline
So i took a job at the king george and
its neighbouring maternity hospital until
things improved.
i was the assistant engineer. it meant
helping to mend the odd trolley, but
mainly keeping the central heating
system going. i had to clean boilers and
keep an eye on their workings generally,
but i also spent a lot of time touring the
hospitals in my grease-stained boiler
suit, bleeding radiators.
That meant going onto the wards –
and on them were a lot of young nurses.
There were a lot of older ones, too,
though. Apart from keeping an eye on
their patients, they also tended to keep a
maternal one on their colleagues.
It’s very difficult to chat up a young
probationer who’s trying to take
someone’s temperature while a stern-
up arts, crafts or
ballroom dancing.
As for computer
lessons, they are useful
for older people, but
most of the 50 year
olds i know need
computer skills for
their place of work.
i thought we lived in a world
where ageism is
unacceptable, and i quote from
www.ageuk.org.uk: “Ageism is
discrimination that can impact
on someone’s confidence and
Time for action on
pavement dog mess
near Henry Green
I LIVE in Valence Avenue, between
Kemp Road and Green Lane. I walk
in the area every day, and there are
always two or three piles of dog poo
left by irresponsible, uncaring owners
who don’t pick up what their dog has
left.
The council doesn’t seem to
faced ward sister charges towards you.
“What are you doing?” one of them
once demanded.
“Bleeding radiators, sister!” i replied.
Whereupon she told me to mind my
language and leave her nurses alone.
Hinges
Another regular job of mine was
wandering around with an oilcan, making
sure hinges on doors and trolleys were in
good order.
it was on one of these forays into the
maternity hospital when it happened.
i had been oiling and greasing merrily
for about an hour when i opened a door
by backing into it.
Then, hearing voices, I turned to find it
full of women in sparkling white overalls
– and other lying on a table with the
think i will be joining in any time
soon.
if i want to do any of these
activities, i have to pay for them,
whereas the story made it sound
like they were all free of charge.
My mother-in-law has taken
up the offer of free computer
lessons – but she is 74 years
old.
Just for the record, i am a
touch it, so it is left until someone
walks in it and spreads it over the
pavement. Henry Green Primary
School is only 50 yards away and
young children and, particularly
for mums with pushchairs going to
school, it is not a very nice place to
walk.
In all the years I have lived in
Dagenham, I have never seen a dog
warden. Do we still have them, or
have they gone the way of the dodo?
I have also never heard of anyone
being prosecuted or fined for leaving
their dog’s poo on the ground. Please
can we put a stop to this unsightly
mess?
pETEr pEarCE
Dagenham
THE CoUNCIL SaYS: Unfortunately,
there are some irresponsible dog
owners who do not clean up after
their pets. We do clean up dog mess
as part of our regular street cleaning
rounds, but if you know an area that’s
particularly bad, please report it to us
by calling 020 8215 3000.
The council does have a dog
warden service, although its role is
dealing with stray animals rather than
targeting dog fouling.
Finally, fining people for dog fouling
is difficult because the owner has
to be caught in the act. However, we
do take action where we can, and we
welcome information from the public
that could help us to identify those
responsible.
My memories of King George maternity wards
others telling her to “bear down”. They
weren’t exactly overjoyed to see a young
bloke in a greasy boiler suit with an
oilcan in one hand and a spanner in the
other!
Those were the days...
You and your health
Flu danger
ANY of us can catch flu, at any time of the year, but
it’s especially common in winter, which is why it’s
also known as ‘seasonal flu’.
It’s caused by a different group of viruses from
the common cold. Symptoms tend to be more severe
and last for longer.
Flu causes a sudden high temperature and headache
along with general aches and pains, tiredness
and a sore throat. You can also lose your appetite,
feel nauseous and have a cough. The symptoms can
make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you
have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better.
Flu is highly infectious and spreads through
spit in the air when someone with the bug coughs
or sneezes. If you’re standing close and breathe in
these droplets, you could catch it, too.
It can also spread if someone infected touches
something with unwashed hands and you then touch
the same thing, like a door handles or table.
one of the best ways of stopping the spread of
PLANET
perfume
flu is to avoid touching your mouth or nose, as you
may have touched a surface already contaminated
with the germs. And remember to wash your hands
frequently.
Always use a tissue to sneeze or cough into and
throw the tissue away once you’ve used it.
Infectious
People with flu can pass on the virus a day before
they have any signs of it, and for five or six days
afterwards, so you should try to avoid contact with
other people while you’re infectious.
If you’re generally fit and healthy, you won’t
usually need to see a doctor if you have flu-like
symptoms. The best thing to do is rest at home,
keep warm and drink plenty of water. You can take
paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower a high temperature
and relieve aches.
But you should see a doctor if you have flu-like
symptoms and you:
Who should get the flu jab?
DESPiTE popular belief, the flu vaccine
cannot give you the disease, as it doesn’t
contain the active virus needed for that to
happen.
The flu jab is recommended – and free
– for those who are:
n aged 65 or over
n living with a serious medical condition
such as heart, kidney or respiratory disease
n living in a residential or nursing home
n the main carers for an elderly or disabled
person who may be at risk if the carer
becomes ill
n pregnant women
n healthcare or social care professionals
directly involved in patient care.
if you think you need it, talk to your gP
or practice nurse.
DAGENHAM Rugby Club’s under-
opposition in a match against a South
African team.
The squad were coming to the end
of a tour with South African sport
organisation Navsfed. They wanted
to play a London team before flying
back home. And after another team
let them down, the Dagenham boys
came to their aid.
But this good deed couldn’t help
the home side, who lost 19-0 to the
tourists.
Dagenham’s under-18 coach,
Russell Yellop, said: “It’s great for
Dagenham and great for the club that
a touring side came here to play.
“It’s a friendly, but it would still
have been nice to win. It’s not often
the team get to play against a touring
side like this, though, so it’s good
experience for them.”
REMEMBERING EL ALAMEIN
Second World War’s turning point
IT’S only two weeks
since we asked for your
memories and stories
about the Battle of El
Alamein – but your
responses have flooded
in, by email and on the
phone.
And among the
emails and phone calls
we received were some
from ex-servicemen
who fought in the battle
itself.
El Alamein is
widely seen as the turning
point of the Second
World War. The borough
is marking its
70th anniversary with a
tree-planting ceremony
at Dagenham’s Civic
Centre this week.
Battles
Two battles took place
in the region, about 150
miles from Cairo, the
Egyptian capital.
It was the second
battle – which began
on 23 October 1942
and lasted for 13 days –
that eventually secured
the Allied victory in
North Africa.
Here are some of
your stories. We’ll be
printing some more
next issue.
Thanks from
thenews to everyone
who got in touch and
shared their memories
with us.
PRECIOUS MEMORIES:
old letters and photos
of his dad
FRANK Jackson, who lives in
Barking, was only eight months old
when his father, also called Frank, was
killed at El Alamein aged just 26.
A matter of days before his death,
Frank senior wrote to Elsie, his wife
of three years. He said he was “still
alive and kicking” and asked about
Bob and comrades thought a lot of Monty
the newborn son he never got to see.
Frank, of the Queen’s Royal
Regiment, was wounded in the desert
and died on a ship as he travelled back
to England. He is buried at the El
Alamein cemetery in Egypt.
His son, now 70, said: “My mum
was a war widow. She lived at Welling
DAD IN UNIFORM: Frank’s
Just days after Frank was born,
battle cost his father his life
“They just got on with things back
then, with a lot of humour.”
Frank’s mum remarried and went
on to have two more children. He said:
“We never really spoke about the war.
But it’s lovely that there will be a tree
in Dagenham and something is being
done for those who died.”
RoBERT Welstead, who goes
by Bob, was a soldier in the
Eighth Army.
Bob, now 91, joined the
army in 1939 when he was 18,
and served for the whole of
the war.
He married Joan in 1960
and they have two children,
four grandchildren and one
great grandchild.
Bob worked at Ford in
Dagenham for 25 years, until
he retired aged 65. He still
lives in the borough.
Due to his ill health, Joan
spoke to thenews on his
behalf.
Desert Rat
She said: “He never really
speaks about the battle. But i
know he fought on the front
line and was a Desert Rat, as
they called themselves.
“i remember him telling me
about being in a lorry that
was blown up.
“Five men were killed and
he survived. He wasn’t
seriously wounded – in a way,
he was lucky.
“All the men thought a lot
of Field Marshal Montgomery,
or Monty, who led them in the
desert.
“i feel quite proud of Bob,
and i’m glad there will be a
memorial tree.”
Sue Bramley Centre, Bastable
HARMoNY House has simple aims.
It offers training, services and childcare
locally, and helps people learn
from one another for everyone’s
benefit.
Its origins can be traced to the
arrival in Dagenham of nuns from the
Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of
Jesus and Mary, in 1928. Their order,
focused on teaching and nursing, set
up a convent off Goresbrook Road
and got involved in local schools.
Project
In 1993 the sisters decided on a major
project. They wanted “a new centre
for learning that would incorporate
all beliefs”. From this came Harmony
House, in Baden Powell Close, built
to provide “a coherent service of education,
training, health and other services
in a multicultural setting”.
The elegant building officially
opened in 2001. Its focal point is
the beautiful Sacred Heart, featuring
a fountain and marbled columns.
The area is meant to offer a place for
“reflection, meditation and prayer”.
The sisters began running community
services from Harmony House
while working to cover its costs. To
help keep the charity and commercial
aspects separate, they made their
first secular appointment in 2008,
giving Marie Kearns the job of chief
executive.
The following year, Harmony
House became a “community interest
company”, running as an independent
body overseen by a board of directors.
Marie set to work creating services
to meet the centre’s aims. She
brought some useful experience to
the job, after 20 years in social work,
as well as senior roles in the local
NHS trust.
Nursery provision, for children
aged between three months and five
years, was a priority. And Marie
wanted more learning programmes
at Harmony House in areas such as
computing and English as a second
language.
Today, Harmony House also runs:
n the Golden Days Care Agency, registered
to provide services such as care
to push even further away
from the drop zone.
Struggling
After a midweek visit from
Exeter, they face struggling
Aldershot on Saturday before
a trip to oxford united.
The third home game in
just over two weeks brings
pre-season title favourites
Rotherham to east London on
10 November.
There could even be a
fourth home game, as the FA
Cup first round takes place on
the weekend of 3-4 November.
The draw was made after
thenews went to press. Details
IT’S been a mixed start
to the season, with many
cup games interrupting the
scheduled league fixtures.
And we certainly could
have hoped for better than
an early exit from the FA
Cup and inconsistent league
results.
There have been many
positives over the last
month, though, with a visible
improvement not only
in our scorelines but also in
the way the team is playing.
We’re now starting
to show the quality we
expected at the start of the
season, with the new signings
bedding in nicely.
Since the start of
September we’ve played
11 games, five in the league
and six cup matches.
From those 11, there
were five victories –
over Barkingside and
London Tigers (FA Vase),
Sawbridgeworth Town and
FC Clacton (Essex Senior
Cup), and Hullbridge Sports.
Upturn
The upturn in form has put
us in a solid league position
that we can rise from,
and given us some progression
in both the FA Vase and
Essex Senior Cup.
The Barking Academy,
set up at the beginning of
this season, has proved
really beneficial already,
with Lemar Reynolds stepping
up and being involved
in the first team squad over
the past couple of games.
It’s exciting to see the
young players coming
through and showing their
quality at such a young age.
Saturday’s game saw
us take on Dunstable Town
in the first round proper
of the FA Vase, a game we
knew was going to be a real
challenge. Dunstable have
started the season unbeaten
The Barking
FC central
defender writes
and recorded an impressive
nine wins from their opening
12 games.
It was extremely tight for
the first 65 minutes – both
teams were trying to play
attractive football, but open
chances were nonexistent.
unfortunately, Dunstable
struck first, after 76 minutes.
It was more our own fault
than their good play that
gave them the lead.
We dug deep and created
a couple of good halfchances
that, on another day,
would have gone in.
But despite the fight, we
went on to concede two further
goals.
Gutted
We’re gutted to be knocked
out of the FA Vase, but every
player put in a hard shift,
and that’s all you can ask.
Looking ahead, the fixtures
continue to come thick
and fast. If we can maintain
the quality of play we’ve
shown over the past month,
then I’m sure it won’t be
too long before Barking are
climbing the table.
Unequal task
BARKING Rugby Club have a
mountain to climb this weekend, facing
their toughest test yet in a hugely
difficult season.
They host a Henley Hawks side
who are threatening to run away with
National League Two South.
While Barking are rock bottom – the
home loss to Dings Crusaders left them
eight points adrift – their visitors are
looking down on the rest.
The Hawks won all their first six
BARKING FC’s run in the FA Challenge Vase ended with a
home defeat by Dunstable Town at Mayesbrook Park. There
were few chances until the high-flying Spartan South Midlands
League side scored three times in the final 15 minutes.
games, with maximum bonus points.
Their 100 per cent record – the division’s
last – gave them a four-point lead
over Hartpury College.
They have already topped 300 points
and scored 45 tries. And they have
broken the 50-point barrier in a match
three times.
If the Henley game looks like an
away banker, at least Barking will travel
to Southend on 3 November with more
hope of a win.
The Essex side are also struggling
near the foot of the table, and lost five of
