Hazy, Hot,
and Humid!
Or what we as South Floridians call it – August!
While we slowly get used to the new rules, regulations,
ordinances, and precautions in place for our
safety – some of us (me! for example) may be in the
need for a little selfcare and stress relief. Luckily, our
All America Town is chock full of places to do just that!
Now that salons and spas are open, there is no better
time to try a new look, hair color, and style. Many spas are offering
specials to help you relax, unwind, and escape reality for a few hours. Or
maybe a combination beach, spa, salon staycation will give you the complete
refresh that we all need!
Delray Restaurant Month is back! August 1 – 31 you can dine at many
restaurants, try new places, and most importantly support local business.
They offer take-out options as well, with prix-fixe menus, and even a Restaurant
Bingo contest! For details on this amazing experience read Delray
Under $50.
Our City Person this month is Maura Plante. This remarkable person
has made it her mission to feed hungry people quality food. Her organization
“Living Hungry” has grown to feed over 2,600 Delray families a week.
A WEEK! And this is just one of her many accomplishments!
Have you finished Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and every
other On Demand network? You are not alone. Lisa Marie
has selected a few of the most popular
Summer blockbuster romance movies
spanning 4 decades! So, pop some corn,
pour some wine, and snuggle up with
your favorite pet or person and get to watching
these oldies but goodies. Oh, and
keep the tissues close by!
Chromebooks Donated for
Students at Achievement
Centers for Children &
Families
With the shift to distance learning in the first few weeks of
the COVID-19 shutdown, a longtime Achievement Centers
for Children & Families (ACCF) supporter saw the extensive need
for access to laptops for under resourced children to be able to
maintain their education during distance learning.
This anonymous donor was able to partner with the Education
Foundation of Palm Beach County to donate 55 Chromebooks
to ACCF which will be distributed to students and
families in each of the organization’s programs to help them
with virtual learning through the summer and the upcoming
school year.
Each family will also receive training from an ACCF staff
member on how to use their new device and get answers to any
questions they may have to continue virtual distance learning
during the school year.
Arts and culture are a key component of the U.S. economy that
arc-Etienne Hoffmann, Mizner Country Club’s Food & Beverage
Teaching CMAA’s online course, Wine Service 101 on June 29,
one of Hoffmann’s key take-aways was to install the philosophy
that, “Nobody is taking this class to get into the business of order
Usually, the CMAA places students in country clubs as summer
interns to gather needed credits to graduate. Given the present
locals only | delray under $50
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in August for $50 or less.
Since we’re all still in the COVID mix of social distancing and
staying at home as much as we can, it’s continuing to prove
more and more necessary for some fresh air and exercise to
keep our sanity. There’s only so much living room YouTube exercising
and backyard family social time that one person can take,
am I right? Good news is that August is Golf Month and the Delray
Beach Golf Club is open and available for a little responsible fun
in the sun. Regardless if you’re in the mood for some solo swings,
want to bring the entire family out for some exercise and bonding
time, or really need a friends-only social sesh, the grass is always
greener on the golf course. While there are set COVID-19 guidelines
in place, which include only one person per golf cart, no walk ups
allowed, golfers should maximize social distancing, and more, golfers
are still invited to have fun and enjoy their time on the course.
Rates range from $12 to $29 and tee times are available daily. The
Delray Beach Golf Club is located at 2200 Highland Ave. Visit www.
delraybeachgolfclub.com or call (561) 243-7380 for more information
and to book your tee time.
Like it or not, this pandemic has forced us all to put on our kitchen
aprons and make the majority, if not all, of our meals and
snacks. While it can be great for those of us who really enjoy
cutting, stirring, and chopping, it can be exhausting for those who
prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals. Whatever your pleasure,
August is Happiness Happens Month and is not only a perfect
time to appreciate all that you have in life, but also do more of what
makes you happy. So, if it’s avoiding the kitchen at all costs, you
go ahead and do you! Thankfully Dine Out Downtown
Delray Restaurant Week has been transformed
into Dine Out Downtown Delray Beach Restaurant
Month and takes place the entire
month of August. Participating restaurants
will now be offering prix
fixe menus, brunch, happy hour
deals and a variety of culinary
events aimed at getting you out of
your kitchen and into theirs. Make
reservations at some of your local spots, including Johnnie Brown’s,
Brule Bistro, Elisabetta’s, Caffe Luna Rosa, Rose’s Daughter, Ramen
Lab Eatery, Proper Ice Cream, and more, and enjoy a meal with zero
effort required on your part. Not only will you be happier not having
to deal with a dirty kitchen, but you will also be supporting your local
restaurants that could use all the business we can give them right
now! Call (561) 243-1077 or visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com
for a complete list of restaurants.
Slippery, salty, and oh-so savory, oysters are the ultimate
indulgence in mollusk mania. If it has been a while since
you braved a plate of oysters, or haven’t tried these little
ocean gems before, you’re in luck because Wednesday, August
5 is National Oyster Day. For a one stop shop to enjoy all the
best oysters in town, head to the one and only City Oyster & Sushi
Bar and napkin up because it’s about to go down in Oyster
Town. They serve oysters by the dozen and offer a daily selection
of the freshest oysters they can get, which might include
Blue Point, Navy Point, Blue Island, Cotuit, Umami, and more,
so get ready to get raw. Not only are oysters a delicacy, they’re
also rich in protein, healthy fats, Vitamin B12, zinc, copper, selenium
and Vitamin D. They are delicious and nutritious, and
perfect for sharing with your special someone or polishing off
the entire plate yourself. City Oyster is located at 213 E. Atlantic
Ave. and is open nightly for dine in, takeout and delivery. Visit
www.cityoysterdelray.com or call (561) 272-0220 for more information
and specific oysters of the day.
In addition to the robust dining, entertainment, and nightlife
scene that Delray is famous for, there’s also another amazing
aspect that makes this city so unique: our art scene!
August is American Artists Appreciation Month and is the perfect
reason to show your local artists some love. While we can’t
peruse the downtown art scene like we all want to (at our leisure
with a never-ending glass of champagne in our hands), the
good people at the Arts Warehouse created virtual events that
still give the impression of being fully enveloped in the artistic
experience, just now from the comfort of wherever you have
Wi-Fi. Not only do they offer studio info sessions with Amanda
Perna, and intro to creativity workshops with Joan Miró, you
can also enjoy their Virtual First Friday Art Walk series on their
social media accounts where they highlight some of their local
artists’ work. While this isn’t the ideal art enjoyment situation,
it’s still not only an important way to show our local artists
some love, but also gives us an opportunity to unglue our eyes
from the TV reruns and treat our mind to something of greater
interest. You can find more information about the Virtual Art
What is the best day to enjoy a crisp beer? Every day
and/or any day, duh. Since many local breweries
have limited hours and going to the grocery store is
the lamest idea of the century, just head to one place for all your
beer needs. In honor of India Pale Ale Beer day on Thursday,
August 6, you are encouraged to head to Hopportunities and
pick out a six-pack that fancies your IPA needs. See if you like
the Can You See It from Miami, the Oh-J from Maine, the Trial
by Wombat or Burning Money or Bliss from New York, the Elevated
Perspective from Wisconsin, the Sunnyside from Florida,
and the list goes on and on and on. So even though you can’t
tap that IPA at your local restaurants and bars, you can pick up
a six-pack (or seven) and host a driveway socially distanced
IPA extravaganza for you and your thirsty beer-migos. Cheers
to this wonderful solution, and three cheers to finding your
hoppy place. Hopportunities is located at 440 N.E. Fifth Ave.
Visit www.findyourhoppyplace.com or call (561) 203-5375 for
more information and a complete list of their beers on tap.
Organize Beach Clean Up in Boynton Beach
Pictures can be sent to lisa@atlanticavemagazine.com
COPYRIGHTED
VolunTEERS FROM BROWARD, Palm BEACHES And St. Lucie REALTORS
recently PICKED UP TRASH FROM THE BEACH In Delray BEACH
The South Palm Beach Board of
Directors of the Broward, Palm
Beaches and St. Lucie Realtors
recently organized a beach clean up
in Boynton Beach at the Ocean Ridge
Hammock Park volunteering as part of
the Florida Realtors Clean Up Florida
Waters Week. More than 20 volunteers
helped remove trash, microplastics,
iron debris and recyclables off the
beach.
According to Christel Silver, owner
of Silver International Realty in Delray
Beach, Florida, and a member of the
Board, “The beaches are some of our
earth’s prized possessions. We should
all do our part to take care of them. One
of the ways we can do that is by organizing
beach cleanups. Across Florida,
volunteers are transforming their communities,
improving the environment,
and creating beauty in their hometowns.
Our organization wanted to find
a way to give back to the community so
we organized a beach clean up.”
From plastic bottles to discarded
cigarette butts, experts estimate there
are roughly seven billion tons of debris
thrown onto beaches around the world
every year. This isn’t just making the
beaches look unseemly, it also has a significant
impact on the environment and
the health of our oceans.
The volunteers expressed the more
personal reasons to get involved in a
beach clean up. They felt that it was a
great excuse to get outside and go to
the beach. It makes for a memorable
experience every time, even when they
are putting in hard work trying to make
sure the beach stays free of litter. What’s
more, they have an opportunity to meet
like-minded individuals who also hold
the beach in high regard.
Now that we are firmly ensconced in summer, and we
all know that the sun and sea can bring love…it seems
only fitting that we take a look back at some of the
sizzling hot romantic movies to have hit our big screen…
► A Star is Born – 2018
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents
to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic
souls coming together, on stage and in life. Theirs is a complex
journey through the beauty and the heartbreak of a relationship
struggling to survive. In this new take on the iconic love story, fourtime
Oscar nominee Cooper makes his directorial debut, and stars
alongside multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar
Gaga in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper
portrays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls
in love with struggling artist Ally. She has given up on her dream to
become a successful singer, until she meets Jack, who immediately
sees her natural talent.
► Beauty & the Beast – 2017
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the
studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters
from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying
true to the original music while updating the score with several
new songs. It is the fantastic journey of Belle (Emma Watson), a
bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner
by the beast (Dan Stevens) in his castle. Despite her fears, she
32 | august 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
befriends the castle’s enchanted
staff and learns to look beyond the
Beast’s hideous exterior and realize
the kind heart and soul of the true
Prince within. Also stars Luke Evans
as Gaston, Kevin Kline as Maurice,
Josh Gad as Lefou, Ewan McGregor
as Lumiere, the candelabra; Stanley
Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the
harpsichord; Ian McKellen as Cogsworth,
the mantel clock; and Emma
Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.
► Friends with Benefits – 2011
Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a New York-based executive recruiter who
entices Dylan (Justin Timberlake), an art director from Los Angeles,
to take a job at the New York office of GQ magazine. Finding that
they have much in common, the two become fast friends. Feeling
jaded by a number of broken romances, Dylan and Jamie decide
that they are ready to quit looking for true love and focus on having
fun. However, complications unfold when the two best pals add sex
to their relationship.

► Dear John – 2010
“Dear John” tells story of John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a young
soldier home on leave, and Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), the
idealistic college student he falls in love with during her spring vacation.
Over the next seven tumultuous years, the couple is separated
by John’s increasingly dangerous deployments. While meeting
only sporadically, they stay in touch by sending a continuous
stream of love letters overseas - correspondence that eventually
triggers fateful consequences.
► Mamma Mia – 2008
Longing to discover the
identity of her true father before
she exchanges her wedding
vows with Sky (Dominic
Cooper), the daughter
of a once-rebellious single
mother secretly invites a
trio of paternal candidates
to her upcoming wedding.
Her mother Donna (Meryl
Streep) has always done her
best to raise her spirited
daughter, Sophie (Amanda
Seyfried), while simultaneously
running a successful
hotel on a small Greek island. Attending the wedding are Donna’s
lifelong friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski).
Plus, Sophie has invited three special guests of her own. Sam
(Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård).
► Sweet Home Alabama – 2002
New York fashion designer
Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon)
suddenly finds herself
engaged to the city’s most eligible
bachelor, Andrew (Patrick
Dempsey). But Melanie’s past holds
many secrets, including Jake (Josh
Lucas), the redneck husband she
married in high school, who refuses
to divorce her. Bound and determined
to end their contentious relationship
once and for all, Melanie
sneaks back home to Alabama to confront her past, only to discover
that you can take the girl out of the South, but you can never take
the South out of the girl.
► The Notebook – 2004
Directed by Nick Cassavetes, this adaptation of author Nicholas
Sparks’ bestselling novel revolves around Noah Calhoun’s (James
Garner) regular visits to a female patron (Gena Rowlands) of an
area nursing home. Rather than bore her with the inanities of everyday
life, Calhoun reads from an old, faded notebook containing
the sweeping account of a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel
McAdams) whose love affair was tragically put to a halt after their
separation in the midst of World War II. Seven years later, the
couple was reunited, and, despite having taken radically different
paths, they found themselves unable to resist the call of a second
chance. “The Notebook” also features Joan Allen, Sam Shepard, and
Kevin Connolly.
► Titanic – 1997
This spectacular epic re-creates the ill-fated maiden voyage of
the White Star R.M.S. Titanic and the tragic sea disaster of April
15, 1912. The contemporary storyline involves American treasureseeker
Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) retrieving artifacts from the submerged
ship. Lovett looks for diamonds but finds a drawing of a
young woman, nude except for a necklace. When 102-year-old Rose
(Gloria Stuart) reveals she is the person in the portrait, she is summoned
to the wreckage site to tell her story. The scene then shifts to
1912 Southampton where passengers boarding the Titanic include
penniless Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and society girl Rose
DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), returning to Philadelphia with her
wealthy fiancé Cal Hockley (Billy Zane). Rose explains the whole
story from departure until the death of Titanic on its first and last
voyage April 15th, 1912 at 2:20 in the morning.
► Groundhog Day – 1993
Bill Murray plays Phil, a TV
weatherman working for a local
station in Pennsylvania. Phil displays
a charm and wit on camera
that evaporates the moment the
red light goes off; he is bitter,
appallingly self-centered, and
treats his co-workers with contempt,
especially his producer
Rita (Andie MacDowell) and
cameraman Larry (Chris Elliot).
He is reluctantly sent to cover a
story about a weather forecasting
“rat” (as he calls it). This
is his fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his
frustration. On awaking the ‘following’ day he discovers that it is
Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. First, he uses this to his
advantage, then comes the realization that he is doomed to spend
the rest of eternity in the same place. He realizes that he’s falling in
love with Rita and therefore wants to be someone that she could
love in return.
with her lifestyle and a need to
pay the rent. On a business trip to Los
Angeles, Edward hires Vivian to be
his girlfriend for a week while he traverses
the local social circles. Love and
various social complications invade
their tidy arrangement and have the
pair wondering if this Cinderellastory
could have a happy ending.
► Ghost – 1990
Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is a
banker, Molly Jensen (Demi Moore)
is an artist, and the two are madly
in love. However, when Sam is murdered
by friend and corrupt business
over a shady business deal, he is left
spirit. When he learns of Carl’s betrayal,
Sam must seek the help of psychic
Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg)
to set things right and protect Molly from Carl and his goons.
► Cocktail – 1988
Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) wants a high-paying marketing job
but needs a business degree first. Working as a bartender to pay for
college, Flanagan is mentored by his veteran boss, Doug Coughlin
(Bryan Brown). Together, their showy tricks and charisma command
large crowds and tip payments - until Flanagan and the cynical
Coughlin have a falling out. Flanagan moves to Jamaica to raise
enough money to open his own bar, where he falls in love with artist
Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue).
► Grease – 1978
1950s teens Danny (John Travolta) and Australian transfer Sandy
(Olivia Newton-John) spend their “Summer Nights” falling in love,
of the bad-boy T-Birds, Danny must act cool for best pal Kenickie
(Jeff Conaway) and their leather-clad mates Sonny (Michael Tucci)
and Doody (Barry Pearl). Despite befriending Frenchy (Didi Conn),
one of the rebel Pink Ladies, virginal Sandy is “too pure to be Pink,”
as the Ladies’ leader, Rizzo (Stockard Channing), acidly observes.
Declaring their devotion in such ballads as “Hopelessly Devoted to
You” and “Sandy,” Sandy and Danny split, reconcile, and split again
amidst a pep rally, dances, drive-ins, and a drag race, before deciding
“You’re the One That I Want” at the climactic carnival.

Masking the Symptoms
The world we live in today is full of misleading information.
It’s not out of the ordinary for people to talk about their pain
when they find out that I’m a chiropractor. It is often the go to
topic of conversation, and I don’t mind talking about it at all.
I
use these conversations as a point to educate them not just
on their pain, but often why they are having pain. It is also
not out of the ordinary for them to speak on the multitude of
topical creams, treatments, and doctors that they have tried with
no results. There is a clear delineation between symptoms and
causes of symptoms. Our healthcare system has been an integral
part in teaching us to use pain as a determining factor in when
we are better. The truth is pain is the last symptom to show up
and the first to go away. There has been long standing dysfunction
and compensation that has led to a point that now there is pain
in that region and want it fixed. An example I use is a root canal.
The procedure of a root canal is done to save a tooth that has long
standing decay and is eliciting sometimes unbearable pain. The
fix to the problem is the root canal, the actual fix would have been
to take care of your mouth, brush your teeth, floss and see your
dentist regularly.
As any good clinician should, we use pain as a subjective marker
to gauge the patient’s thoughts on their progress; however, this
should always be accompanied by objective measures that show
verifiable outcomes reflecting improvement. Those can be done
with range of motion, orthopedic testing, functional movement
evaluations, reflexes and other neurological tests that can be documented.
These tests give a baseline of how the patient is functioning
overall and are monitored through treatment. We do this solely
because pain is subjective, meaning a 10 for me might be a 5 for
you. That is why when we do our thorough examinations, we use
the pain and symptoms that are present as a road map to get to the
original source and cause of dysfunction. Let us use sciatica as the
topic for the remainder of the article. Sciatica, by definition, is just
inflammation of the sciatic nerve. It is not a definitive diagnosis; it
is an early symptom. Sciatica takes many forms, radiating pain into
the glutes, down the hamstrings, into the calf, and sometimes into
the foot. Here, as clinicians we need to delineate what is causing
this problem. Is it a disc issue, a zygapophyseal joint, a facet capsule
issue, a stenosis issue, a muscle imbalance issue, or is it from major
trauma or pathology? All of these possibilities have their own
treatments and their own patterns that a trained clinician should
be able to detect. There is no blanket treatment, no amount of over
the counter medications, topical creams, stretches or massages
that can be used to fix the actual problem, not just mask the symptoms.
Fixing the problem takes time, repetition, strengthening, and
reconditioning your body to function as it was designed. The cause
of these symptoms should be dealt with an active plan. Stop masking
symptoms and get to a clinician that can help determine what is
going on and has a concrete plan on getting back to living without
pain and symptoms.
health & beauty | DERMATOLOgy
By Jennifer Wilson, MSN, ARNP, NP-C
COVID-19
Masks and “Maskne”
Face coverings and masks are now a way of life and essential to
helping decrease the spread of COVID-19. Mask usage has allowed
certain skin conditions to emerge and now dermatologists are treating
all kinds of facial dermatitis, the most common being called “maskne.”
This new term was coined to describe the clogged pores and
acne like lesions that occur around one’s nose, mouth, chin,
and ears from consistently wearing a mask. The actual scientific
term is acne mechanica which refers to a type of acne due
to constant contact or pressure on the skin. Masks clog pores by
trapping in sweat, humidity, and oil throughout the day. As we continuously
breathe warm moist air into the mask, a perfect environment
for acne causing bacteria to flourish develops. Masks may also
cause contact irritation, dermatitis, eczema, bacterial and fungal
infections.
Getting rid of masks, unfortunately, is not option for now, but
there are some easy and effective ways to fight “maskne” and mask
related rashes!
1. Wash yOUR FACE
Using a cleanser with acne fighting ingredients such as benzoyl
peroxide or salicyclic acid can be beneficial in helping to kill the
bacteria that cause acne. If you have a sensitive skin type, choose a
cleanser with natural botanical ingredients, such as rose hip – that
can leave your skin refreshed without irritation.
2. Use an exfoliant
Exfoliating your skin with topical products or by using office delivered
micro-dermabrasion, can be effective ways of removing the
dead skin cells that build up on the skin surface and lead to the
clogging of pores and oil build up underneath our facial coverings.
3. Apply less makeup
Using less foundation and powders, especially around the mouth
and nose, can help dramatically reduce the amount of oil and congestion
that builds up in our pores while wearing a mask all day.
4. Use a clean mask
Avoid repeatedly wearing the same mask over and over again because
it could be harboring bacteria and contributing to your acne.
Use disposable masks daily or wash reusable masks to ensure your
skin is only touching clean material.
38 | august 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
COPYRIGHTED
5. Use an oil free moisturizer
Applying a lightweight oil free moisturizer can help sooth dry
irritated skin but also provides a barrier for the skin to protect it
from acne causing bacteria.
Wearing masks is an adjustment that our society and our skin
need to adapt to. Most of these steps are pretty simple and making
small changes can make a big difference in the health of the skin
behind the mask.
Surgery No, Transformation YES!
Thinking about the latest and greatest procedure to change the
shape of your body? Well I’m here to help you question your
decision before you put down that credit card. And I am not
talking about updating the boobies for a perkier look (I’d be the
first to tell you to go for that!), I’m talking about liposuction, fat
transfers, booty implants, etc. - all the procedures that promise
a brand new you, and give you the look you always wanted.
You know, those advertisements that just seem too good to be
true. Sure, a shortcut may be appealing and ideal to many…
but let us consider a few points before opting for surgery.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not against all surgeries – there are
some people that have tried everything (correctly) and still need a
little extra help. However, I am weary against unnecessary procedures
and here’s why:
1. Regret
So many clients regret their surgery. After it’s done
there is no going back. But even worse is when a
client does go back in to get something fixed and
the result looks no better than before. While considering
surgery ask yourself, “Is this my last resort?
Have I tried everything else humanly possible?
Would I really
need lipo if I just
cleaned up my
diet? Do I really
need booty implants,
if I did all
the right exercises,
even if it took 2-3 years?”
2. Longevity of results
Sure, you might look like a hot tamale for
a while but without the foundation of a healthy
lifestyle, the results will not last. I’ve had clients tell
me that they got lipo and literally gained it all back!
Imagine spending all that time, money, and risks
only to gain it all back. I never understood how
one could think that they can just continue eating
junk and that the fat would never come back. If
you learn how to eat and exercise correctly, those
are the type of results that will last. It may not
be the quick fix you were hoping for but I can
promise you will really appreciate the results
once you get there.
3. The bad fat
Plastic surgery does not get rid of the dangerous visceral fat that
sticks around the organs. This type of fat can lead to heart disease,
diabetes and obesity. So if you think that after going under the
knife you’re going to become a “healthier” version of yourself,
think again. Everything leads back to diet and exercise.
No quick fix, but one that will help you live healthier,
stronger, and longer.
4. Undesired results
This kind of goes along with the regret
I mentioned above but I can honestly say
the majority of my clients that had various
procedures are truly unhappy with the
outcome for one reason or another. Dimpled
bellies, drooping derriere implants,
infected areas, boxy shapes…the list goes
on. The results that most people desire
can be attainable through eating clean
and the right exercises. You may never have
a booty like Kim Kardashian, but do you really
want one? If the answer is “yes,” then, do
what makes you happy – just know the risks
involved, and have realistic expectations.
I hope this article has made you consider
proper diet and exercise to reach realistic
goals with no unnecessary risks,
or surgical recovery with unpredictable
results. Many times, commitment to a
healthier diet and lifestyle is all anyone
needs to get into the best physical
shape of their life!
“We are back in business and excited to see our guests,” said
Nance Bernet, owner of Hy Pa-Hy Ma. “We are fully open and enjoy
The local boutique has implemented all the necessary safety protocols
during this time to ensure their customers’ wellbeing. They
have masks available for customers, and their employees always
wear masks. They offer hand sanitizer to all their guests as well.
Their staff assists guests in person or virtually. Call by phone, they
offer curbside drop off at their many parking spots available in
Hy Pa-Hy Ma offers exceptional and elegant fashions, and beautiful
perfect for outdoor dining and a stroll along the beach. They carry
high-quality brands such as Frank Lyman and Joseph Ribkoff.
The owner wants to provide her guests with a sense of normalcy
during these times. “Shopping at Hy Pa-Hy Ma gives people a renewed
feeling of normalcy in their lives. When guests buy a new
outfit or accessory, they will have a feeling of pleasure,” said Nance.
The Delray Beach boutique offers a sophisticated look for people
who really care about fashion and style. They accommodate for
shoppers who like to look a little more comfortable as well as offering
a fitted look.
Hy Pa-Hy Ma was one of a few women’s clothing stores in the
town of Delray Beach in 1978. “There was virtually nothing around
this area at the time. There was a gift shop, hotel and restaurant
down the street, but there really wasn’t any shopping,” said the
owner. “I wanted to open an eclectic shop. We started out collecting
paintings, and selling antiques, chocolates and shipping oranges.”
Her store quickly expanded to offering ladies dresses, clothing
for women and men, accessories, children’s clothes and pajamas,
and was the first to sell kimonos from China.
“Over the years, women kept coming in and shopping for clothes
for themselves to wear to a social event or special occasion, and
we focused on becoming a ladies clothing boutique. Women are
powerful and they are shoppers; Hy Pa-Hy Ma evolved into this
very nice upscale boutique. Now we offer a variety of sophisticated
styles catering to the customers’ preferences,” she said.
offering the highest quality of sophisticated women’s clothing,
purses, and jewelry for everyday wear.
“We cater to the woman who wants an outfit that is flattering,
sophisticated, and clothing that will take her from day to night.
We try to keep our prices of the clothing moderate for our customers,”
said Nance. “We accommodate everything from casual
and sophisticated day wear, lots of separates, jackets, skirts and
Longtime customers praise the owner and staff at Hy Pa-Hy
They also have the most comfortable sinks of any salon
“Staff was very professional when entering for my appointment,
Building Homes and
Recreating Greatness On Land
By diane feen | photos by Shelby Halberg
To whom much is given much is
expected. Chuck Halberg knows
this philosophical truth.
That’s why he has spent so much of his time giving back to communities
and non-profits that need his expertise and passion.
It’s a reciprocal “feel good” transaction. “I have a passion
for providing quality attainable housing for first time home buyers
and the underserved population,” said Chuck, who started his
company in 2006.
Chuck started Stuart & Shelby the old fashioned way – hard work
and dedication. He worked for Holtzman & Silverman Construction
in Michigan and was transferred to Florida in 1980. He was
also a construction manager for Arvida Homes and became VP of
construction for the Holiday Organization (a large builder in Long
46 | august 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Island). For Holiday he developed and built seven communities in
Palm Beach County with over 750 units.
In 2006 Chuck started Stuart & Shelby (named after his two
sons). “Our dedication and commitment to clients and their projects
is backed by an excellent record of on-time and on-budget
completion. Our loyalty to them does not end when their project is
complete, it continues into the future.”
As owner and founder of Stuart & Shelby Development in Delray,
Chuck is in a position to bid on projects that benefit underserved
communities.
“We recently completed a 14-unit townhouse development in
Lake Worth that benefits Adopt-A- Family homeless families. There
is also a community building included in the project that will be
used for educational and support services,” said Chuck.
Stuart & Shelby Development grew exponentially from a small
company with four employees to one of substantial standing in the
community with 12 employees. They get referrals from former clients
to renovate homes and condos and build new custom homes.
They work with people from all walks of life, even a few celebrities.
Honesty and consistency have catapulted them to become a goto
builder for non-profits, city projects and private homes. They go
the extra mile to make sure clients are satisfied, and their needs are
met (and often exceeded).
Currently Stuart & Shelby has over 20 projects on the books. “We
are actively pursuing numerous other projects. These include large
custom homes, market rate and attainable housing projects and
condo renovations. We recently teamed up with East to West Development
Corporation, a not-for-profit in California, and are looking
to provide affordable housing in South Florida (up into Ft. Pierce).”
Stuart & Shelby is also working on attainable housing for the Delray
Beach Community Land Trust in the SW/NW neighborhood of
Delray. They have completed construction of over 20 houses and
will be building 10 units at Corey Isles beginning in August 2020.
These homes are a godsend for those in need of affordable housing.
Chuck knows the importance of affordable housing and is
working with two private developers to provide additional workforce
housing in the area.
His loyalty is also to projects that benefit communities. “Chuck’s
generosity in our community is inspirational. He and Pam believe
in giving back, and Arts Garage benefits tremendously from his vision
and passion for the arts and impact they have on community.
Our new build-out (completed in 2019) includes offices and classrooms
and has changed the face of Arts Garage. It took us to the
next level,” said Marjorie Waldo, executive director of Arts Garage.
It is Chuck’s giving nature that has been recognized by others in
the community. He was Business Person of the Year (2010-2011)
and Stuart & Shelby was Business of the year (2013-2014) by the
Delray Chamber of Commerce. Chuck also won the Ken Ellingsworth
Community Service Award three times.
The Delray resident (who recently downsized to fit into downtown
Delray) has also been in the forefront of organizations that
help non-profits and the needy. He is Chairman of the Arts Garage,
co-founder of Impact 100 for Men as well as the Delray Beach Initiative.
Both organizations provide funding for children in need.
“I am involved in numerous not-for-profits and am a big supporter
of the Delray Beach Police and Fire. Two of my favorite events
are the Annual Police Awards Banquet and Thanksgiving Day Dinner.
We procure and deliver food to all six fire stations in Delray.”
To know Chuck is to know his other half, Pam Halberg. After a
23-year career in accounting at an agricultural farm, she switched
careers and went into real estate. She not only works at Stuart &
Shelby but is a realtor at Signature International Premier Properties.
Pam is in the Million Dollar Guild and received the Certified
Luxury Home Marketing Specialist designation, along with Accredited
Buyers Representative.
Their son, Shelby Halberg is also part of the Stuart & Shelby
landscape. He is a documentary filmmaker, photographer and a licensed
drone pilot who takes pictures of Stuart & Shelby’s projects
as well as other clients.
Chuck is adamant that Stuart & Shelby strives to satisfy their clients.
And the testimonials on their website prove this theory. Ted
and Rosalie Ackerman hired them to add a second story to their
home. The results surpassed their expectations.
“We want to thank you and your fantastic staff for all the marvelous
work you did on rebuilding our home and adding our second
story. We knew when we met you that you were the only one to
complete this job for us. Stuart & Shelby did an outstanding job and
tackled every problem you faced with extreme confidence. Over our
lifetime, we have had three other major construction ventures completed
in our former NY home. None of the work compared to yours.”
Winning The Hunger Games
Don’t ask Maura Plante a question and expect a short
answer. The Lincoln, Rhode Island native is tall in stature
and has an intellectual repertoire that is massive in scope.
As someone who was told as a child that she could accomplish anything,
Plante is fearless. She’s been like that since childhood - and
the rest is history – a long and layered history of scaling heights.
“I read a National Geographic magazine and saw a child boiling an
egg in a puddle of water. I realized then that I needed to speak Chinese
and Spanish so I can talk to anyone on the planet.”
She did just that.
After high school she lived in Spain and then attended Georgetown
University, where she got a BA in Chinese language and literature.
True to her mission of becoming a person of the world she spent her
junior year in China and got a Masters Degree in psychology from
Columbia University.
Though Plante is educated in many disciplines, her belief is that if
you focus on a mission you can complete any task. You could say she
is a study of her own theory.
As a lifeguard she thought nothing of swimming out to a riptide
(with her back-up crew) and saving a swimmer. “I am strong; in six
summers as a lifeguard I saved 75 people. I never thought anything
could go wrong.”
As a poster child for positivity, things rarely go wrong for Plante.
That’s because she focuses on the good she can do in the world, and
plows forward like an astronaut on a critical mission.
Her accomplishments are the product of her innate gifts of brilliance,
a competitive spirit and her upbringing. Her father Roger was
her role model and inspiration. “My father is a thoughtful giver. He
cares about other people and is kind and selfless, he’s my rock.”
Unlike a rock Plante is more like a torpedo. She graduated college
and set out to change the world one project at a time.
She worked at Singapore Telecom in marketing and sales and began
a journey into uncharted telecommunications landscapes. Plante
traveled the world working for companies like Comcast, Prodigy, Cablevision,
MCI and others. She developed products, launched highspeed
internet, Video On Demand, branding, advertising, created
apps, software and solved problems.
When asked how she learned about all these groundbreaking technologies,
Plante uses the wisdom that defines her. “I learn by doing,
that carries me everywhere.”
You bet it does.
After working at Bankrate as Director of Product Development,
Plante had down time. So, she volunteered and helped launch the
Homeless Coalition. When she found out they were lacking in funds,
she sprang into action and built their website, did marketing, fundraising
and aligned with sponsors.
Plante has a history of picking up the pieces for others. She has
mentored the needy for years and when she sees a problem (or roadblock)
she uses herculean strength to effect change. Her shift into
high gear often includes her secret sauce – teamwork.
High gear for Plante is supersonic by human standards. “Maura is
a tornado for good and has dedicated her personal and professional
life to helping others. She’s so smart – her mind and heart go hundreds
of miles per hour. She’s a vital asset to our community,” said
Ezra Krieg, Director of Housing, Gulfstream Goodwill Industries.
Krieg has seen Plante close up. He has seen her come up with problem
saving techniques and create solutions like a genie bursting out
of a bottle of possibilities.
She did that in 2016 when she started “Living Hungry.” The purpose
of this food-driven initiative is to feed hungry people quality
food. The organization has grown to feed over 2,600 people a week
in Delray alone.
But one thing that distinguishes “Living Hungry” from other food
banks is they hand out 20-pound boxes filled with healthy food. Every
Tuesday and Thursday mornings semi-tractor trailers are filled
with boxes of cooked chicken, produce, cheese and healthy fare to
give away at Cason United Methodist Church.
Plante has volunteers (she calls feeders) that distribute the boxes
to those in need. Lately it’s not just the homeless or food insecure
coming for food, it’s a more diverse group. “In a crisis like this it allows
us to rise up and love on each other and take care of each other.”
To Plante taking care of each other is a calling from God’s employment
agency. She helped send supplies to Puerto Rico and the Bahamas
after Hurricane Maria and is known for her amazing resourcefulness.
“Maura is everywhere helping people. She’s tireless in her efforts,
and wherever good things are happening Maura is probably close
by. She brings people together, is a great leader and an unsung hero,”
said Katherine Waldron, co-founder of Palm Beach County CARES
and Port of Palm Beach Commissioner.
With the onslaught of job insecurity from Covid, Plante is seeing a
new influx of people coming for food. It doesn’t ruffle her feathers –
or cause an alarm – it merely catapults her into ethereal messenger
mode. “We don’t consider this help; we consider it an experience of
neighbors helping neighbors. At times like this we get a chance to
feed people with dignity.”
The ”we” at Living Hungry are the “feeders,” of which Plante is
the quintessential one. “Some people have a calling in their life –
they are called to feed people. We love feeding others, it’s our love
language.”
That language caused Plante to leave the corporate world (where
she was offered a bounty of riches) but she never looked back. “This
is not about money. It’s about love. We use food as medicine and are
discovering how it positively affects people’s health. I love solving
problems: The fun is in locking horns with impossibilities.”
To know Plante is to know that there is no such thing as impossibilities.
Miracles appear in her midst often - not only to her - but to
those who walk beside her.
¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. If desired, grill pita bread until
warm, 1 minute each side.
5. Spread the pita with yogurt, if desired, then stuff with the chicken,
tomatoes, and salad.
Does Nature Hold the Secret
of Health for ALL Creatures?
Working within the field of holistic and naturopathic
health, not only are we observing the holistic (whole
body), and the naturopathic (how nature handles things)
but we look for all the inter-species connections and similarities
to expand our understandings. The more we understand and learn
from animals in the wild, the more we can determine how to heal
and prevent disease.
How do animals in a natural environment avoid or prevent major
pandemics? I marvel at how in nature, that birds, insects, and all other
creatures have the innate ability to know what to eat, how to find a
safe water source, know where to nest or sleep safely plus have the
ability to apply this knowledge to all other aspects of their lives. How
is it that thousands of species in this world have the instinct to know
who is safe and who is not? For example; we have the little songbird
nesting in the tree watching the ducks walk by doing nothing but then
attacks the cat or the crows to defend its nest.
Of all the world’s creatures, few have chosen to live among humans
with the exception of our domestic pets. Interaction between species
is rare and mostly secondary. Prey animals control the population balance
of non-prey creatures but also provide a symbiotic relationship
of feeding the scavenging creatures.
Our domesticated pets are the ambassadors of the natural kingdom
to us. They provide special traits that we are now realizing are imperative
to guide us in our appreciation of the universe.
With regard to this special bond, we have to observe and question
our relationship with these special creatures. They are there to
comfort us in stress and illness and protect us in times of danger. It is
instinctive, not taught or learned. While we can appreciate these instincts,
which allow most of our domestic pets to still have the ability
to instinctively return to their feral and wild state without additional
training or learning if necessary.
We need to honor and relish our special relationships by treating
our pets like the royalty that they are. Have you learned what their
real needs are in respect to nutrition, healthcare and well-being?
What is species appropriate nutrition for your dog or cat? Why is
this most important for their health and longevity? When they came
out of nature to adopt us, did they require vaccines, medications or
special scientific foods? Did they bring with them all kinds of disease
and other challenges?
The answers to these and many other questions are foundational
in the physiology of these magnificent animals. If we truly understand
the lesson they are bringing to us from the natural world, our lives
will be truly blessed and healthier. They show us the importance of a
proper nutrition in the way their bodies improve when a species appropriate
diet is applied. We see the adverse reactions they have when
we intervene with drugs, surgeries and treatments. We see the effects
of our toxic environment on their overall existence.
We are their guardians and have been given this gift to learn from.
We have the obligation to learn and understand in the most comprehensive
way that the answers are not found in a bag, a box, a bottle,
vial or a pill but are in the natural world that surrounds us. Our pets
have presented the lesson. It is up to pet parents to learn and do.
