As much Handel
as you can handle
This year marks the 250th anniversary
of the death of George Frideric
Handel, and the city of Halle is celebrating
its most famous son with a year of
concerts and cultural events. The high
point on the city’s 2009 calendar is the
Handel Festival in June. The festival’s
patron is none other than Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II. The British are
particularly big fans of the Baroque
composer – after all, he spent a large
part of his life in London. Guests this year
will be treated to a feast of Handel’s operas, including
Floridante, Rodelinda, Alcina, Serse,
Ariodante and Belshazzar.
Around the world in 30 millennia
This beautifully designed book is thick and heavy – as it might
well be, since it contains the artistic endeavours of 30,000 years
of art history. This collection of major works of art from all cultures
and peoples provides a fascinating overview of humanity’s
creativity from the earliest cave paintings to Chinese brush
painting to the drip style of Jackson Pollock.
Photographer Peter
Badge spent eight
years following all the
surviving Nobel Prize
winners. The result is
this 18 lb volume of
photographs. Nobels
features intimate
portraits of worldfamous
scientists,
writers and other eminent personalities like Kofi Annan,
Nelson Mandela (photo) and John Nash. Badge’s photographs
of Nobel laureates relaxing on the sofa or lounging by the
pool in goggles provide unexpected insight into the lives of
these extraordinary men and women who have helped shape
global history – proving that they are ordinary people too.
