A blooming marvellous
NAMAKWA RETREAT
Intimate, hidden, isolated retreats are those worth
exploring right now. With now-you-can-travel-now-youcan’t
regulations, self-catering options for families wanting
to get away for a while are the way to go ... if not now,
then as soon as we can. One we think is marvellous is the
Naries Namakwa Retreat in the Northern Cape. This
privately-owned 6000ha farm, dedicated to conservation
and sustainable living, is situated between Springbok
and Kleinzee. A beautiful and romantic hideaway, it’s well
positioned for exploring the greater Namakwa region – from
the Richtersveld in the north, to the shipwrecks in the west as
well as, in season, the wild flowers. Perched on the top of the
Spektakel Mountain, its views of the spectacular Namaqualand
landscape, and the dramatic sunsets over the Atlantic seaboard
some 60 kms away, are unsurpassed. As a retreat, it offers space,
peace and tranquillity ... and three excellent accommodation
options. There are classic rooms in a Cape Dutch-style Manor,
as well as self-catering cottages, and, for a real spoil, luxurious
Mountain Suites – domed, exclusive, thatched units built into
the magnificent granite boulders, each with a view of the
plains below. Besides the Wildflower Tours in season, there’s
also Orange River rafting, hiking, birdwatching, stargazing and
game viewing. Or you can just relax next to the swimming
pool. Naries, accessible from Springbok via a 27 km tarred road,
is one of the Cape Country Routes properties, so you know
it’s going to be excellent. Rates from R1210 a person sharing.
There are three options at the reserve … each as lovely
as the other. Stay in the Cape Dutch-style Manor …
… or the luxurious Mountain Suites … domed,
thatched suites built into the granite boulders …
… or the lovely self-catering cottages – perfect for a family
wanting to isolate from the stress of the city for a while
