A Promise to Transform Lives
Dear Friends,
Thank you for a fantastic year in 2019! Because of
your generosity, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine
was able to provide more than $3.3 million in financial
assistance to over 11,000 Chester County residents
to ensure they had access to all the YMCA offers—
membership, childcare, early learning programs,
healthy living programs, summer camp, swim lessons,
sports and much more.
Thank YOU for your commitment to our mission and
to our community. You make our Y a very special place
and we couldn’t continue our cause of strengthening
our community without you.

While the numbers are exciting, hearing the impact
motivates us even more. One mother shared,
“I qualified for financial assistance to send my son
to the YMCA for childcare. It’s allowed me to start
rebuilding my life for me and my son.”
Another member named Todd shares, “I would not
have been able to get in shape without the Y! I had
absolutely nothing and just couldn’t afford it. Incomebased
membership really helped me get my feet back
on the ground.” (Read Todd’s story on page 7).
Even though Chester County is one of the wealthiest
in Pennsylvania, it is estimated that one in four
families are left with just $60 per week after paying
for the basics of raising children. That leaves very
limited funds for families to experience the lessons,
sports and programs which help them grow in mind,
body and spirit. Thanks to your generosity, no one
is turned away from the Y due to an inability to pay.

DEVELOPMENT
BRINGING THE ARTS TO LIGHT

Art & Humanities at Jennersville, believes their program
is special because they offer a well-rounded theatre
education as well as opportunities for social and emotional
exploration and expression.
“Our program cultivates empathy and understanding of
others’ experiences though they may be vastly different
than our own,” explains Paige. “We focus heavily on
team-work, self-pride, professionalism, and intellectual
and emotional exploration. Basically, we create, we play,
we dance, we prepare, we solve problems, and we have a
whole lot of fun!”
At the YMCA of Greater Brandywine we strive to nurture
the potential of every child by providing youth with the
tools and resources they need to succeed in life.
At the Jennersville YMCA and the Upper Main Line (UMLY)
YMCA, our theater programs boomed with youth learning
to express themselves and build confidence in 2019.
In the four years since Janelle Brandberg, Arts &
Humanities Director at UMLY, took over the theater
program, it has grown from basement performances at
a local church with 100 folding chairs to 177 actors and
2,000 tickets sold per performance at the Tredyffrin
Easttown Middle School.
“We don’t turn anyone who auditions away,” says
Brandberg. “They all have to audition, but all are accepted.
This program gives kids confidence in themselves here
and at school. It is not just about the performances,” she
continues, “they learn acceptance and being kind to each
other. They take pride in what they accomplish. In many
ways it is almost therapeutic for the kids.”
The Jennersville YMCA has also seen tremendous growth
in their theater program, especially since they added a
new theater to their branch in 2015. They now have more
than 170 actors and 15 performances for each of their
fall, winter and spring shows. Paige Causey, Director of

The Service to Youth Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose dedication and effort

PARTNERS IN OUTREACH
The Service to Youth Award recognizes individuals and
organizations whose dedication and effort have made a
significant and positive difference in the lives of children
in our community.
Partners in Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated
to fostering relationships, facilitating partnerships and
providing opportunities to service others with love,
integrity and humility, is the 2019 recipient of the YMCA
of Greater Brandywine’s Service to Youth Award.
Since Partners in Outreach began in 2010, they have
been providing backpacks to YMCA summer campers.
The group put together more than 1,000 bags last year,
which included new bathing suits, flip flops, towels and,
new for 2019 thanks to donations from KPMG and Barnes
and Noble, books. They helped 17 organizations, including
seven branches of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.
“A couple of years ago, the Executive Director at the West
Chester Area YMCA told us about a family that had four
kids signed up for summer camp at the Y,” says Maryanne
Parsons, Founder and President of Partners in Outreach,
“but they didn’t show up. When the Y reached out to them,
they were embarrassed because they didn’t have bathing
suits. They were advised that there were four camp packs,
each filled with a new swim suit and supplies waiting for
them. That is exactly why we do this!”
“Camp and swim lessons can be intimidating, and when
you don’t have the supplies, even more so,” says Parsons.

“Providing them with supplies puts the kids on a level
playing field. It helps their self-esteem.”
“And everyone likes new stuff,” adds Lisa Lutza, Summer
Camp Program Coordinator for Partners in Outreach. “We
give them new suits and we try to match the flip flops,”
she adds with a grin. “We want them to feel comfortable
and stylish.”
Partners in Outreach had more than 525 volunteers last
year helping with all their different programs. “We find
people really want to help,” says Lutza. “But I really like
dropping the bags off myself. I love to see their faces.
It is a good feeling, very tangible.”
“It is a collaboration,” adds Parsons. “Many hands make
light work! Basically, we are just enhancing what the Y does.”

The Community Partner Award recognizes an organization or group that has demonstrated a commitment
to the YMCA’s mission and values and has partnered with or supported the Y in outreach initiatives that
strengthen the foundations of our community.
NEMOURS CHILDREN’S
HEALTH SYSTEM
Nemours Children’s Health System is the 2019 recipient
of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s Community Partner
Award. The non-profit pediatric health system has been a
major supporter of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine for
the past five years, embracing the Y’s cause of building a
healthy community in Chester County through their support
of Healthy Kids Day, Power Scholars, Youth Sports, SPLASH!
Safety Around Water, Girls on the Run and STRIDE.
“Getting a chance to support programs that have direct
impact on children is more important than just a branding
component,” says Michelle Shorter, Director of Community
Engagement for Nemours Children’s Health System. “It creates
for a deeper partnership.”
Supporting the SPLASH! Safety Around Water program was
an easy choice. Accidental drowning is the leading cause
of death in children one to four years old, and the second
leading cause in children five to 14 years old. The Y’s
program helps kids learn to be safe in and around the water.
“We are always looking for ways to prevent what we see in
our emergency rooms,” explains Shorter.
“Nemours is also focused on supporting mental health,”
continues Shorter. The Y’s Power Scholars program helps
close the achievement gap and prevent summer learning loss.
The kids in this program grow mentally stronger in both
social and learning situations. “We are so excited by the
outcomes of this program. It builds confidence and leadership
skills in kids with diverse socio-economic backgrounds.”
“Volunteerism is important to us,” says Shorter. “We provide
volunteers for events like the Girls on the Run 5K, and are
always looking for more opportunities.”
Shorter has been both a YMCA member and a YMCA Black
Achiever. “The Y is more than just a gym; it is a community.
The values the Y holds align very well with the values we
have at Nemours Children’s Health System.”

HEALTHY
LIVING
MOVING TO THE BEAT OF A NEW SPORT
The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) knows that
remaining active and connected is the key to living a long,
healthy life.
Pickleball, a sport created for all ages and skill levels, is
one of the fastest growing in the country. Many YMCA
members love playing pickleball, and it’s especially popular
with senior members. It is a paddleball sport that combines
elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Players
use solid paddles to hit a wiffle-type ball over a net.
At YGBW, there are dedicated groups of seniors playing
pickleball at many of our branches.
John Anderson, a member of the Upper Main Line YMCA
since 1985, was asked by fellow members to start a
pickleball league, so he did. In just one year the program
has grown to 65 members! “Pickleball is the #1 sport in
the U.S. and the #1 growing sport internationally,” says
John. “I am talking about active players, not those who sit
on a couch and watch it on television or in a stadium.”
The sport is great for fitness as well as hand/eye
coordination. “We NEED to move,” says Lance Knauth,
a member of the Oscar Lasko YMCA (OLY) group of
pickleballers that started three years ago. “As we
get older, we really need the exercise as well as the
socialization.”
“It is great exercise,” confirms Carolyn Stokes, another
OLY pickleballer. “And I really enjoy the people I’ve met.
We are competitive, but it’s not a make or break situation.
It is important to laugh and we have a good time. I prefer
this to working out!”

Experience is not necessary for any of the pickleball
groups. “We welcome anyone,” Carolyn says. “The more
the merrier!”

RESPONSIBILITY
ENSURING EVERYONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN, GROW AND THRIVE
The YMCA of Greater Brandywine offers income-based
membership and financial assistance to ensure all in our
community have every opportunity to grow in spirit, mind
and body. In 2019, our fundraising efforts helped us
provide more than $3.3 million to over 11,000 individuals,
who benefited from YMCA memberships, childcare,
summer camp, programs and more.
Todd admits he made a mistake in 2009. After being
arrested on a first-time offense drug charge, he vowed
to change his life.

is now a successful insurance salesman and still belongs to
the Y, but no longer needs financial assistance.
“I would not have been able to join a gym and get in shape
without the Y!” says Todd. “I had absolutely nothing
and just couldn’t afford it. Income-based membership
really helped me get healthy and get my feet back on the
ground.”
He was lifting weights while incarcerated and wanted
to continue that regimen when he was commuted to a
halfway house in 2011, but he had nothing and could not
afford a gym membership. He learned the YMCA offered
income-based membership, so he applied. “I walked in and
told them my story,” shares Todd. “They seemed a little
hesitant at first, but still took me in with open arms and
changed my life.”
Todd began working at a pizza shop, and with his
workouts, initially lost 90 pounds. He has now lost 150
pounds, is walking four miles a day and lifting weights a

YMCA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes the effort and achievement of the YMCA’s most special friends and emphasizes
the need for community service by all our citizens. Recipients of this award have set a standard of leadership
that others follow.
KEN GODDU
Ken Goddu, Executive Vice President/Director of Commercial
Specialized Banking for Fulton Financial Corporation, is the
2019 recipient of the YMCA Distinguished Service Award.
He recently completed a two-year term as Chair of the
YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s Board of Directors, and
will continue to serve on the board, as well as chair the
Board’s Nominating and Governance Committee.
“My first experience with the Y was when I was encouraged
to join the West Chester Area YMCA’s Board of Directors,”
says Goddu, “and it really opened my eyes. The mission
and impact the Y has on the community and the fact that
they open their doors for all is unmatched.”
“There are so many worthy Y programs,” continues Goddu,
a father and grandfather, “but the SPLASH! Safety Around
Water program hits a note with me.” Goddu remembers
hearing the story of the family from the Jennersville YMCA
whose daughter fell into a creek and survived by floating
on her back, like she learned in swim class at the Y. “It was
a very impactful story,” says Goddu.
A YMCA board member for nearly 20 years, Goddu has
been a part of the tremendous growth of the YMCA in
Chester County. He was integral to the 2001 merger that
brought together four YMCA branches to create the YMCA
of Brandywine Valley and then again with the merger in
2015 when eight branches came together and formed the
YMCA of Greater Brandywine. “The YMCA has never been
stronger in Chester County,” says Goddu.
