BREEDER OF THE YEAR

Fred Courtney was selected as the Canadian Speckle

Park Association’s 2019 Commercial Breeder of the Year.

“Uncle Fred,” as he is affectionately known, runs nearly

300 head of red and red-baldie cows. He purchased his

first Speckle Park bull more than 20 years ago, and has

used the breed exclusively ever since. Fred is the largest

contributor to the Speckle Park influence sale in Ponoka,

Alta., consigning 200-250 Speckle Park-cross calves each

year. With his 87th birthday just around the corner, Fred

has no intentions of slowing down and will continue to

live by his motto, “I’m going to wear out not rust out!”
