How to be involved
Addressing a Council Meeting
The public may address a Council
meeting on any subject of concern
or interest to the City. A period
of 15 minutes for public question
time is set aside at ordinary Council
Meetings for members of the
community to ask questions relating
to Council activities.
Any member of the public wishing to
ask a question should first refer to
Council’s website www.ccc.tas.gov.
au/councilmeetings.
The public is encouraged to
submit a question in writing, that
is, a question ‘on notice’. Council
recommends this option, as it
enables Council to provide a more
complete response.
To submit a question in writing,
members of the public must fill out a
question registration form, available
at Council offices or at www.ccc.tas.
gov.au/councilmeetings.
Forms need to be lodged at Council
offices no later than 5.00pm on
the Friday ten days before the
scheduled meeting. Question
registration forms can be lodged by
mail, in person, fax (03) 6245 8700,
or email publicquestions@ccc.tas.
gov.au.
6
Priority will be given to questions
on notice over questions without
notice asked from the public gallery.
Questions without notice will be
dependent on available time at the
meeting and are permitted at the
discretion of the Chairperson.
Deputations
Council provides an opportunity
for members of the public to make
a statement at ordinary Council
meetings. The subject of any
statement can relate to a matter
currently before, or at some future
stage to come before Council, or any
other matter of general relevance to
the interests of the City.
Any member of the public wishing to
make a statement should first refer
to Council’s website www.ccc.tas.
gov.au/councilmeetings.

7
heritage precinct, Council’s Heritage
Advisor is available to discuss your
Arranging building and
plumbing permits
Most building work requires
building and plumbing permits.
Check with Southern Water before
contacting Council regarding
Plumbing Permits.
To obtain a building permit, you
need to engage a private building
surveyor to assess your building
plans and issue a Certificate of
Likely Compliance. The Certificate
of Likely Compliance must
accompany your building permit
application. Builders usually lodge
these applications on behalf of
clients.
Council’s building and plumbing
officers are available between
8.00am and 5.15pm to assist with
lodging permits and arrange any
necessary inspections. For more
Council approval is required to
install or alter an on-site waste
water management system. The
services of an environmental
consultant will need to be engaged
to investigate the property
and design a suitable system.

Wastewater system design needs to
consider the volume of wastewater
that needs to be managed based
on the number of bedrooms and
rooms that may potentially be
used as a bedroom, the area of
the land available for wastewater
management, which includes a
reserve area of equal size in the
event of failure, and the capacity
of soil on the land to sustainably
manage the volume of wastewater
generated by any development.
