FLYING BOWLERS
WOW – what a wonderful end of year function for everyone. The weather was perfect for the early birds and
they all enjoyed their bowls. However, the wind increased during the morning making it more of a challenge for
the later bowlers. Still, the sun shone keeping it very pleasant.
Ninety two people enjoyed and savoured every mouthful of their lunch – chicken breast with wing
bone attached served on asparagus, snow peas, capsicum and ‘chat’ potatoes with savoury sauce
followed by our favourite meringue roll and raspberry jus. After lunch Val Mahn did a few oneliners
and sang an appropriate little ‘ditty’ about getting old and Santa and his helpers treated us
all to a sachet of sweets with a Ho Ho Ho. Carol Anstiss had prepared a large hamper and
several smaller lucky door prizes and, much to everyone’s delight, the hamper was won by our very
deserving secretary, Val Gordon. Ten other people each received some Christmas ‘goodies’ beautifully
presented in a handy dish.
Peter Robson (in the absence of our patrons John & Betty Morrison – their first missed Christmas function in 25
years) badged and welcomed our new members, Bev and John Peters, Pauline van den Berg, Diane & David
Hall and we concluded with a raucous rendition of our Flying Bowlers song. A good time was had by all.
There was a terrific response to the toy appeal for the Salvation Army and many lucky children will no doubt be
delighted when they wake up on Christmas morning.
Our next occasion is New Years Bowls Day – 20 January 2013 – and it will all be on again for another year.
More details later.
Jan Hannon has recently had surgery and is now convalescing and we wish her a speedy recovery. Any other
members ‘out of sorts’ are sent our blessings as they ‘struggle’ with their health. You are in our thoughts.
WALKERS
MT KURING-GAI – COWAN CREEK – BEROWA – 14 th Nov. Showers forecast but no
showers. A cool day – just right for a challenging bush walk from Mt Kuring-gai railway station
down 200 metres to Cowan Creek, alongside the creek and then back up 200 metres to
Berowra railway station. Seven serious members turned up for this classic walk. We left Mt
Kuring-gai railway station just after 10 am and made our way to a lookout overlooking Apple
Tree Bay for morning tea. After morning tea one of the group who lives nearby pointed out a
memorial to four New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service officers who lost their
lives in a hazard reduction operation at Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park 12 years ago.
We then headed down the escarpment to Cowan Creek. The track along the creek had lots of ups and downs
and large rocks to clamber over. Every muscle in our bodies got a work out. After passing three delightful coves
(not the human type) we had lunch near the fourth. It was then a gradual uphill climb to Berowra station. We
M.G.

arrived just in time for the 2:39 pm train back to Chatswood. All up it took us 4 ½ hours to cover the 9km.
WOMEN'S BOWLS
Tuesday 20th November
Despite the threatening weather we had 43 players. It was certainly a lovely sight to see the green full. We did
have some rain early on but once it stopped the day turned out to be a perfect for bowls.
At lunch time we had a visit from Peter Robson who advised us that he will be conducting an Umpire &
Measuring Course for both the Men's & Women's sections (combined) early next year. At this stage it looks
like it will be 4 x I hour sessions. Hopefully we will gain some much needed Umpires, but even if you are not
interested in becoming an umpire this is a great opportunity for all members to learn the rules of the game
especially with Pennants coming up. Thank you Peter.
We then had Sheila Flaherty showing some shirts for consideration to be our future Club shirts. Our members
seemed happy with one in particular if a few adjustments could be made e.g. pocket added. This will be
followed up. Thank you Sheila.
Helen Brunsdon won this weeks lucky lunch/green fees, Tanya Carey won the Christmas ham raffle and Hazel
Kuoni won the second prize.
Christmas Luncheon - Cost is $30. Gwen Graham is now collecting the money. We hope to make
some hampers up for raffle prizes as this proved to be very popular last year. The
Committee kindly request donations from members to fill the hampers and these may be
left in our locker room over the next two Tuesdays.
Upcoming Events
5th December - Men's and Women's bowls joint Christmas function. Light lunch
commencing at 12 noon. Cost - $7. Dress - mufti.
11th December - Christmas Break-up and Presentation Day
