22 7 August 2010 WHAT’SON FOCUS ON STUDENTS’ OLYMPIC CREATIONS students from the borough, which can be seen in The Gallery at the Barking Learning Centre tWo of the borough’s elite athletes helped put art students on the right track by offering the inspiration for impressive olympic sculptures. thirteen a-level art students –from all Saints, Eastbrook, Robert clack and Warren schools –took part in the artwork experience project. the young artists spend two weeks working on a commission from the borough’s olympic ambition team. it’s the fifth time that Barking and dagenham trident –which organises work experience for hundreds of young people each year –has run the annual scheme. the students put together piece of 3d artwork featuring the 13 large-scale olympic figures, as well as amural and supporting artwork. the goal was celebrating this summer’s countdown to the London 2012 olympic and Paralympic Games. as well as teaming up with athletes wrestler chloe Spiteri and ice hockey player Stevie dunnage, the Barking and dagenham students visited the olympic site. the programme was sponsored byaimhigher, a Government programme which helps and encourages young people get into further education. consultant advisory teacher for art and design Jim Scott ran the events. Jim said: “to provide inspiration for the programme, we took the students tothe olympic site, to make preparatory drawings for alarge scale mural. “We invited two of the borough’s elite athletes tothe Westbury centre at the start of the programme so students could make some life drawings.” trident director Myra Maccormick said the programme aimed to give a-level students afeel for work as practising artists in the creative business, producing areal commission to atight deadline. agala reception marked the opening of the first exhibition featuring the figures and supporting artwork, atthe town Hall in Barking, before the show moved to the Gallery at Barking Learning centre, onthe opposite side of Barking town Square, for the countdown event. the students received trident certificates to mark their achievements from Barking and dagenham Mayor cllr nirmal Singh Gill. More than 400 students from the north East consortium 6th form took part in programmes organised by trident and the Education Business Partnership. along with the art programme, 80 students participated in an insight into Management programme, working insmall groups with employers to solve and report on business problems, 16students attended the allen &overy Smart Start Programme which saw them gain an insight into the world of business and the work of an international law firm and 300 plus students went on work experience to awide range of employers to enhance their cVs. news Got a story for our readers?
